We often hear sad stories about kids who died after being left in a car in summer. According to a study, every 10 days in the US, a child dies in a car from heatstroke (中暑). More than half of the accidents are because of the parents. They forget leaving their kids in the car.
16-year-old Areen learned about such an accident from a teacher. She thought, “Why don’t we do something for the problem?”
17-year-old Ayah was thinking about the same problem. According to her study she found that such things happened everywhere. She started working on a heatstroke-warning system. Areen and Sara did that too.
After the three met at a science show, they worked together and made a better system. Their system can tell how many people are inside the car. People can see a car’s indoor temperature and CO2 levels on a mobile App. If the levels get too high, the system will tell the phone. And it will open a car’s window when it’s needed.
The team hopes their system can get more attention and they can finally put it on the market. Areen says, “I hope that one day when people buy a car, it’s already there like an airbag.” They also want to make their system better. And they hope one day it could call 911 and show where the car is.

When my fourteen-year-old daughter, Claire, and I found out that we were going to Antarctica (南极洲) to study the emperor penguins (帝企鹅), we were excited.
To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through a terrible area called the Drake Passage. Walls of water as tall as thirty to forty feet rushed into our ship for two days. Our ship shook so terribly. My daughter and I knew about the Drake Passage and we were mentally (心理上) prepared. It was important to always watch our feet as we went to the dining room each day to carefully get a quick meal before returning to our bed.
Before long, we reached our final destination. After landing, we were told “penguin etiquette (规矩)”. These were the basic rules: You can’t touch a penguin, but they can touch you if they’d like; you can’t crowd them, but they can crowd you if they want. With those rules, we were free to walk and take photos.
We began the two-mile trip over the ice to the penguins. At last, we saw them—emperor penguins, tens of thousands of them. It was exciting.
We found a quiet piece of ice, sat down, and soon the penguins came around us. They are so cute that we still talk about the penguins now, and I’m sure we always will.

We all know that we human beings have feelings to show how we feel every day. Do animals have feelings? Though animals can’t think by themselves, they do have feeling changes. For example, a dog shakes its tail (尾巴) to show its happiness and barks (吠叫) to drive a bad person away. Animals are able to show some feelings like human beings. However, are they able to feel sad?
The answer is yes. We humans are not the only group that owns sadness. Animals have this feeling, too. Many studies have shown this. When meeting some bad things, animals show sadness as human beings do. When a friend around dies, both animals and humans act in a lot of common ways: refusing to talk with others, sleeping less, and eating less. It proves that animals have the feeling of sadness. Just like humans, it also takes animals a lot of time to get away from the feeling of sadness. ________
Knowing that animals have sad feelings, we should change the way of treating them. They may die early if we don’t understand them or treat them well. To help our pets live longer, we should be friendlier to them and treat them as our friends instead of toys for fun. And try to look after animals around us well.
36. Why does the writer give examples in the first paragraph?
A. To show us that animals are able to show some feelings.
B. To show us that animals are human beings’ closest friends.
C. To show us that animals can protect themselves from bad persons.
37. How does the writer tell us that animals are able to feel sad like humans in the second paragraph?
A. By giving us some numbers. B. By showing us results of many studies. C. By telling us a sad story.
38. What does the underlined word “proves” mean?
A. Shows that something is impossible. B. Shows that something is false. C. Shows that something is true.
39. Choose the best sentence to fill in the blank “________” in Paragraph 2.
A. So, what should we do to help them?
B. So, how animals show sadness like humans?
C. So, when can we find animals’ sadness?
40. What does the writer really want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. To tell us why animals are able to feel sad.
B. To show us how to deal with our bad feelings well.
C. To call on us to be friendlier and treat animals well.

根据第一段“For example, a dog shakes its tail to show its happiness and barks to drive a bad person away.” 故选A。
根据第二段“Many studies have shown this. When meeting… animals have the feeling of sadness.”
根据“ It proves that animals have the feeling of sadness.”
根据“Just like humans, it also takes animals a lot of time to get away from the feeling of sadness.”可知,动物需要很长时间摆脱悲伤,结合下文第三段“Knowing that animals have sad feelings, we should change the way of treating them.” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Knowing that animals have sad feelings, we should change the… try to look after animals around us well.”

According to her study, she found that such things happened everywhere.

Animals have this feeling too.
