Chalk is something you probably see and even use every day. But have you ever thought about
turning it into carved (雕刻的) artwork using just a compass (圆规)?
Shen Sihao. 31. started doing this in high school. Growing up in Luoyang, a city in Henan
province known for its cultural relics (文物) and historical sites, Shen often used his compass to
carve chalk into miniature versions (微缩版本) of cultural relics and ancient buildings he saw in
history books or around Luoyang. "It's a shame that I didn't have much time back then to do more,"
Shen reflected
After getting a job at an internet company in Beijing, Shen had free time, so he decided to
realize his childhood dream. Since 2024, he has been sharing videos online showing off his chalk
carvings, including tomb figures (俑), arrows, and more. His account (账号), Trifle in Break Time
has found a large following, especially among students

For Shen, the process of carving is just as fascinating as the end product. "Only by carving can
I fully understand the structure, details and secrets of cultural relics," Shen said. For example, while
carving an ancient warrior, he studied a photo closely and realized that it looked a lot like Ultraman.
"Maybe the design of Ultraman was inspired by an ancient Chinese warrior!" he said
To Shen, carving chalk not only helps him learn more about history and culture but has also
taught him patience. "I often accidentally break my work when it's almost done," Shen said
"Patience and perseverance (毅力) are the key. It's the same with life - when you rush or try too
hard. it's easy to break things."
34. Why does Shen's account attract many students?
A. Because his videos show Ultraman
B. Because his carvings bring history to life
C. Because he shares how to carve in class.
D. Because he works for an internet company.
35. The underlined word "fascinating" in Paragraph 4 means"__
A. boring
B. tiring
C. attractive
D. difficult
36. How did the carving process help Shen?
A. It helped him to be brave like ancient Chinese warriors
B. It increased his interest in comic characters.
C. It showed him how Chinese culture is similar to other cultures
D. It helped him understand Chinese cultural relics better.
37. What life lesson has Shen learned from carving?
A. Try to be patient and never give up
B. Never push yourself too hard
C. Success lies in details
D. Actions speak louder than words

①Can you imagine a doctor performing a surgery (手术) on a patient thousands of kilometers
away? It seems to only happen in science fiction. However, a recent surgery done by doctors in
Chengdu has shown the possibility in real life. Using a robotic technology, the doctors saved a
patient in Lhasa (拉萨). With the development of AI-powered remote (远程的) surgery, moder
healthcare has changed in a big way.
②AI played an important part in this surgery. By studying tons of medical data (数据), Al
helps doctors plan the surgery, predict problems that could happen, and find the solutions.
③During the surgery, AI also tells the doctors the patient's necessary information, like heart
rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. If anything of the patient goes wrong, it can warn the medical
team and suggest changes to the surgery plan.
④Another key role in this surgery was super-computing technology. Remote surgeries need
fast data transmission(传送), as even small delays (延迟) can be dangerous. Super-computing can
quickly deal with a lot of data, making sure that the surgery pictures are clear and that the doctors
orders are followed at once. The two-way network delay in this surgery was only 40 milliseconds
thanks to powerful supercomputers.
The robot used in this surgery does an excellent job. It has one arm and one hole, which
makes the cut smaller, making less pain and speeding up the process for the patient to get better. It
also increases the chances of a successful surgery and lowers the risk of accidents.
This kind of surgery is a huge excitement, especially for people in remote areas. It means
that patients don't have to travel far for good medical care, saving time and being treated in time.
And for places with fewer doctors, this kind of surgery also brings good news as doctors
from bigger cities can help with surgeries and train local doctors. This kind of surgery is important
for improving healthcare everywhere

If you are on a bus or train, you've probably noticed that most people spend the ride looking at
their cell phones. No doubt, they think doing nothing but sit there would be boring, so they prefer
distracting themselves
But results from new research suggest we should rethink that choice. We are probably
underestimating(低 估) how enjoyable and interesting it is to do nothing but pay attention to
wherever our thoughts take us.
In a series of experiments, Researchers asked Japanese university students to stay alone in a
room for 20 minutes. The participants (参与者) could think about anything while waiting. But they
were not allowed to use phones, sleep, walk, or check the time. Before going in, they thought the
experience would be boring. However, after the 20 minutes, they reported enjoying it much more
than they had thought. Even in a dark, quiet room, they were more interested
"People don't realize the real value of waiting and thinking," says researcher Kou Murayama
"Once they take part in it, though, they appreciate it." Spontaneous (自发的) thinking often includes
mind-wandering (走神), daydreaming, thinking about the future, or recollecting memories, all of
which can have upsides. For example, daydreaming and mind-wandering have been found to
improve our mood, creativity, goal-setting, and job performance.
Though it's hard to know if these results with students would apply (适用) to the rest of us, Kou
Murayama compared German and Japanese students and found both groups made similar mistakes
in predicting how they'd feel. This suggests that it's not necessarily a culturally-driven phenomenon
(现象), though more research would need to be done to check that
Overall, we should think twice before reaching for our phones when we're waiting or bored
Taking time to think freely can bring us more pleasure and advantages.

The Ghost moved slowly and silently towards him. And as it moved through the air, it scattered
gloom.
The Ghost wore a black robe. The robe covered its head, its face and its body. The only thing
visible was a hand. The Ghost neither spoke nor moved. Scrooge was terrified.
"Are you the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come?" asked Scrooge. The Ghost didn't answer, but
it pointed its hand in front of it. "You are going to show me the future," Scrooge continued. "Am I
right, Ghost?"
The Ghost nodded its head. That was the only answer Scrooge received.
"Ghost of the Future," he said, "I am more afraid of you than of all the other ghosts. But

The Ghost moved forwards. Scrooge followed in the shadow of its robe. And the robe carried

Scrooge listened to their conversation.

"When did he die?"asked another
"Last night, I think."
"What was the matter with him?"asked a third.
"God knows." said the first, with a yawn.
"What has he done with his money?" asked a red-faced gentleman.

Everybody laughed
"It will be a very small funeral" said the great fat man. "I don't think anybody will go to it."
Scrooge knew the men. And he looked towards the Ghost for an explanation. He didn't

Scrooge looked around the place. He looked at the clock. It was strange. He was usually there at
this time but he couldn't see himself.
