In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
4. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy?
A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful.
C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging.
5. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2?
A. He wanted to focus on his work. B. He was struck by sudden sorrow.
C. He attempted to behave like an adult. D. He was faced with increasing pressure.
6. What did the author get from picking up his hobby?
A. More fun in the daily routine. B. New journeys in the wild.
C. Better skills of observation. D. Different styles of photography.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography
C
I’ve never had a great sense of direction. And I often wander into shops and, upon coming back out, can’t remember which way I’ve come from - left or right? Many people are like me, and why do some constantly have no idea where they are?
The hippocampus (海马体) is a region of the brain associated with memory and involved in sense of direction. And a nearby region has also been associated with sense of direction. There are four known types of navigation-related neurons (神经元) found in these regions: place cells, grid cells, border cells and head direction cells.
In short, you can think of place cells as an internal cognitive (认知的) map; they identify where you are. Grid cells are like a GPS system in our brain; they tell us about the relationship of this place to other places we’ve been to. Border cells respond to the presence of environmental boundaries at a specific direction and distance from us. Lastly, head direction cells are activated when our head faces a specific direction. These cells will fire electrical impulses when we enter familiar locations, with each group of cells relating to a specific place.
Our reliance on GPS and smartphones may have decreased the ability to use our internal maps. Older adults who regularly used GPS had less activity in their hippocampus, compared with those who did not use GPS. They also performed slightly worse in a cognition test. In contrast, a study involving London taxi drivers found they significantly larger hippocampus than ordinary people.
You can improve your way-finding ability specifically by practicing the skill, according to Aziz, PhD of neurology at Temple University School of Medicine. “The more you get out and go to places, the better,” he says. Physical exercise improves the blood flow to the brain, while mental exercise, such as doing puzzles or learning a new language, stimulates the development of new nerve cells and connections in your brain.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By raising a question. B. By making a comparison.
C. By stating personal opinions. D. By referring to scientific research.
9. What can we learn about the four types of navigation-related neurons?
A. They depend closely on each other. B. They are responsible for different jobs.
C. They will decrease in numbers as one ages. D. They will fail to function in unfamiliar situations.
10 What is the potential consequence if we rely too much on GPS?
A. It may lead to a larger hippocampus. B. It may improve cognitive abilities.
C. It may reduce activity in hippocampus. D. It may increase the number of navigation-related neurons.
11. What does the last paragraph suggest as a way to improve way-finding ability?
A. By making most of GPS. B. By relying more on cellphones.
C. By avoiding unfamiliar situations. D. By engaging in physical and mental exercise.
D
Every year, the release of new phones brings consumers to the market looking to upgrade their phones to the next best thing. However, the problem of electronic waste, or e-waste, isn’t so well-known despite the threat it poses to the environment. E-waste is the term used for electronics that have been thrown away. Although buying the latest device may initially be a good decision, in the long run, the constant purchase of electronics will affect the health of our planet.
E-waste is common in the U. S., as landfills (垃圾填埋场) are filled with old electronics. According to an EPA report, materials in these landfills account for 70 percent of dangerous materials. In the commercial district Agbogbloshie, Ghana, most electronic waste is burned or thrown in acid, seriously damaging the environment with poisonous emissions in the air.
At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of buying a new one. Additionally, before throwing away your old device, donate it to schools, charities or non-profit organizations that can find a use for the product.
Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use when they educate students about the topic.
As the effects of climate change grow more and more serious, it’s our responsibility to help the planet and prevent issues such as e-waste. As the 5G revolution begins, it’s important to remember to recycle old smart phones and understand that a difference can be made at the individual level.
12. What is the author’s main concern in the text?
A. New technology is hard to apply. B. The problem of e-waste is ignored.
C. People refuse to upgrade their phones. D. Few people care about the environment.
13. Why does the author mention Ghana in Paragraph 2?
A. To warn of harmful emissions. B. To explain the waste of resources.
C. To show the seriousness of e-waste. D. To show the wide use of landfills.
14. What does the underlined word “overhauled” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Restored. B. Replaced. C. Cleaned. D. Suspended
15. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The prospects of future e-waste. B. The responsibility of communities.
C. Online resources on reducing e-waste D. The education of students about e-waste.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game, which was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway — two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby, too young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.
Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fear of watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫) noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.
A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose fashion, used it as a public toilet. My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew around the house, and then came back again once the porch was clean.
Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months.

As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away.

根据文章第一段中“I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing. (那时我拍了很多照片,当你冲洗你的胶卷时,你会得到彩色照片,这一事实让我很高兴,它冻结了那些珍贵的时刻,温柔地鼓励了我的爱好和为冲洗而支付的费用。)”可推断,对于作者小时候拍照这件事,作者觉得这是令人兴奋且值得的。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. (这些年来不断增长的压力把相机从我的枕头旁推到了角落里的盒子里。)”可知,作者面临的压力越来越大,这使得作者停止了拍照。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. (即使一天很满很忙,我也能抓住一些时间给自己拍照,观察周围的世界。)”和第四段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. (对我来说,这个房间代表了我是如何找到幸福的:通过重新连接我搁置的年轻的自己,通过在我的生活中为快乐留出空间,通过创造一个允许快乐机会的环境。)”可知,作者通过重新开始拍照,在繁忙的日程中获得了乐趣。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
10. What is the potential consequence if we rely too much on GPS?
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第三段“In short, you can think of place cells as an internal cognitive (认知的) map; they identify where you are.
根据第四段“Older adults who regularly used GPS had less activity in their hippocampus, compared with those who did not use GPS. They also performed slightly worse in a cognition test. (与不使用GPS的老年人相比,经常使用GPS的老年人的海马体活动较少。他们在认知测试中的表现也略差。)”可知,如果我们过于依赖GPS,可降低海马体活动。故选C。
【11题详解】

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.

Before we knew it the little thing had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings. One day, when Dad threw Peeper into the air, he just flew away and didn’t come back. With night falling, all of us became increasingly worried. We looked for him, called his name, and even peeped like him, anxiously expecting his return. But the special buddy never appeared again. Suddenly losing the special companion, everyone was very, very sad. It took a long time before we accepted the fact that he was missing. Meanwhile, we could only pray he found his parents and went off on his natural way. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
It came as a total surprise to me when, in 2019, an adult goose made his way back to my family home. He did all of the same things Peeper used to do in Peeper’s old ways, and much to my surprise, he even responded to the name Peeper. It became clear to me that my old best friend had returned, 20 years later. This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. Looking beyond our reach high in the sky, birds have feelings like human beings, so do many other living things. We human beings should learn to get along well with them. We need each other’s care and protection.
