How to Drop a Pant Size in a Week
Dropping one pant size in seven days is a difficult task, but with dedication, exercise and the right diet, you can make it happen.
Increase your water consumption. Thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger, and if you are drinking the right amount of water, you will find it much easier to avoid snacking. Look to drink at around eight or nine glasses of water every day.
Lower your calorie count. You can use a calorie calculator to determine how much you need to take in to maintain or lose weight If you take in fewer calories than you burn each day, you will lose weight as a result. As a rule, an average-sized woman needs to take in less than 1.300 calories per day for extreme weight loss, as you’ll naturally burn around 2,000. Exact measurements differ based on age, height, weight and activity level.
Cut the junk food. Chips, soda and candy seem harmless if taken as snacks, but can seriously affect your weight loss, Limit yourself to one or two snacks per day and switch your usual snack foods for baby carrots, apples and grapes.
Break up your meals. If you want to lose weight, try eating four or five small meals per day instead of two or three large ones. This makes it easier for your body to process what you are consuming. Divide your required calories by the number of meals you’ll be eating to determine how large each meal should be Space your meals out two or three hours apart—try meals at breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, afternoon and dinner.
Doing intense aerobic (需氧的) exercise. You have to encourage your body to bum calories if you want to drop pounds and inches. Running is by far the fastest calorie burner, with the potential for 986 calories per hour. If you’re unable to run, use an elliptical machine (椭圆机), jump rope, or participate in a high-impact aerobics class.

Passage du Gois is a natural road located on the Atlantic coast of France in Vendée. The 4,150-meter-long road, which leads from the mainland to the island of Noirmoutier, is covered with water twice a day during high tide (潮). If you have mixed up the time of the tide, the only way out is a boat. The road can be used just at low tide.
It is only an hour and a half before the lowest water level and an hour and a half after it. In order to drive along this road, you need to know the time of the tides. In any case, follow the advice on the electric boards placed on both ends of the road, and you will know whether it is passable or not. Although it is forbidden (禁止) by law, in very bad cases, you can stay on the coastline. It is strictly forbidden to park a car on the sidewalk. To avoid slipping (滑) sideways, you need to drive slowly.
Trucks and buses can cross the road only from the mainland to the island. At high tide, from 1.3 to 4 meters of water covers the road. After high tide, the road becomes wet and slippery because of the algae (水藻) that remain on it. When this passage is littered with algae, it may be dangerous to cross.
This area is very often covered with thick fogs (雾) so it is better to wait for the low water on the land. This road was first used in the 16th century, and gradually became covered with silt (sand, dirt, and very small rocks). This road was even used several times for the Tour de France (a well-known bicycle race). Today, thousands of tourists come here every year to watch how the road goes underwater twice a day and then reappears. It is so special that you will never find the same one anywhere else in the world!

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, ”Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes…The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

A. it easy to think like a customer

A red bus took visitors along the streets of New York City’s Roosevelt Island. But this wasn’t a typical sightseeing tour. Passengers all wore virtual reality headsets (虚拟现实头戴设备) for an eye-opening experience. This experience was designed to engage (使参与) visitors in creative ways through a new system called CXR. Passengers were transported into a place where virtual and real environments met. There they experienced nine shocking scenes showing the impact of climate change especially rising floodwaters.
Scientific models suggest that a 100-year flood could cover most of Roosevelt Island. Despite the warning, research shows that such a disaster doesn’t feel real to many in the public. This discrepancy is exactly what the CXR system aims to deal with.
The technology helps people understand serious challenges like climate change. The participants can experience a shared reality while traveling through their environment. And the CXR system proved to do more than just educate people about disaster risks.
After seeing the most serious flooding events, participants reported strong emotional responses. Many expressed increased concern about climate change and a desire to do something. One participant was even moved to tears upon seeing a flood reach the steps of her school. “These types of reactions were not surprising,” said Wendy Ju, whose research group created CXR. “We did find that people got worried, but we also noted that the worry seemed to inspire people to take measures. It’s a good result from our viewpoint.”
The CXR system has many possible applications beyond its primary plan. It can play an important role in city planning by engaging communities in discussions about new developments. By providing a clear and realistic presentation of suggested changes, it helps to reduce misunderstandings. This encourages people to actively express their opinions about approaches to future planning. “Immersive (沉浸式的) technologies can bring future challenges into focus,” Ju said. “They are important for building the social will to prepare for what lies ahead.”
51. What is the primary function of the CXR system?
A. To encourage public transportation use.
B. To raise awareness of climate issues.
C. To teach flood prevention measures.
D. To increase the enjoyment of tours.
52. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Goal. B. Request. C. Method. D. Gap.
53. What do the participants’ reactions reflect?
A. Their wish for scientific progress. B. Their interest in public discussions.
C. Their growing sense of climate action. D. Their confusion about climate education.
54. Which can best describe the experience with the CXR system?
A. Educational and inspiring. B. Adventurous and joyful.
C. Confusing and stressful. D. Realistic and relaxing.
55. How can the CXR system generally benefit city planning?
A. By driving cooperative problem-solving. B. By stressing the need for green spaces.
C. By focusing on short-term solutions. D. By reducing overall planning costs.

When we were growing up in our grandparents’ home, Jack, my grandfather, was always in his room sitting in the chair and listening to the radio. The voices speaking from the metal box day and night, taught us that there was a larger world outside. He would roll the black dial (刻度盘) back and forth until the signal was clear. Then he would listen.
Now he is old and falls ill. When I went to visit him, he said to me, “I dislike the Internet. The problem is that we’re losing primary contact with each other. No more shaking hands. Everyone is so busy. We want too much and in the process of getting it we miss so much." He stopped for a while. “It makes me lonely and sad.” Then he looked at me, “I just want to hear your voices.”
I think of all the voices on the radio he has spent a lifetime listening to. I asked, “How did you become interested in radio?” “I don’t know,” he said. “It was another way to reach people. I was always interested in searching for a better signal, a clearer, more powerful signal that could communicate with someone somewhere.”
“And I’ll tell you another funny thing: you can electronically eliminate all kinds of noise from the signal, but you can’t get rid of natural noise caused by thunder and lightning, rainstorms, or snowstorms.”
He closed his eyes and smiled. “I was just thinking that in spite of all our technologies, maybe we haven’t progressed that far as human beings. We shouldn’t forget we still have the same basic needs.”
56. What did Jack use to do in his room? (No more than 12 words)
57. Why did Jack roll the black dial back and forth? (No more than 5 words)
58. How is Jack feeling now? (No more than 8 words)

60. What should you do to solve the problem of losing direct contact with others? (No more than 20 words)

This area is very often covered with thick fogs (雾), so it is better to wait for the low water on the land.

A. in deep water on sunny days

There they experienced nine shocking scenes showing the impact of climate change, especially rising floodwaters.

【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Passengers were transported into a place where virtual and real environments met. There they experienced nine shocking scenes showing the impact of climate change, especially rising floodwaters.(乘客被运送到一个虚拟和真实环境相遇的地方。在那里,他们经历了9个令人震惊的场景,展示了气候变化的影响,尤其是不断上涨的洪水)”以及第三段“The technology helps people understand serious challenges like climate change.(这项技术帮助人们了解气候变化等严峻挑战)”可知,CXR系统的主要功能是提高对气候问题的认识。故选B项。

Despite the warning, research shows that such a disaster doesn’t feel real to many in the public.(科学模型表明,百年一遇的洪水可能会覆盖罗斯福岛的大部分地区。

One participant was even moved to tears upon seeing a flood reach the steps of her school. “These types of reactions were not surprising,” said Wendy Ju, whose research group created CXR. “We did find that people got worried, but we also noted that the worry seemed to inspire people to take measures. It’s a good result from our viewpoint.”(在看到最严重的洪水事件后,参与者报告了强烈的情绪反应。
根据第三段“And the CXR system proved to do more than just educate people about disaster risks.(事实证明,CXR系统所做的不仅仅是教育人们了解灾害风险)”和第四段“We did find that people got worried, but we also noted that the worry seemed to inspire people to take measures. It’s a good result from our viewpoint.(我们确实发现人们感到担忧,但我们也注意到,这种担忧似乎激励人们采取措施。在我们看来,这是一个很好的结果)”可知,CXR系统的体验是有教育意义和鼓舞人心的。故选A项。
【55题详解】

By providing a clear and realistic presentation of suggested changes, it helps to reduce misunderstandings. This encourages people to actively express their opinions about approaches to future planning.(它可以通过让社区参与讨论新的发展,在城市规划中发挥重要作用。
59. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 4 mean? (1 word)
60. What should you do to solve the problem of losing direct contact with others? (No more than 20 words)
【答案】56. He used to sit in the chair, listening to his radio.
Or: He sat in the chair and listened to his radio.
57. To find a clear signal.
58. He is feeling lonely and sad.
59. Remove.
60 Open.
We should reduce the time we spend on the Internet and find more time to communicate with others.

词义猜测题。根据第四段中的…but you can't remove natural noise caused by thunder and lightning, rainstorms, or snowstorms.(但你却不能去除掉由雷电,暴雨,或暴风雪造成的天然的噪声)可推测,前一句you can electronically eliminate all kinds of noise from the signal的意思“你可以通过电子手段消除信号中的各种噪声”。因此,remove(去除)应与划线部分的单词是同义词故答案为remove(1个单词)。
