His mother came from a family of musicians and piano manufacturers, a fact that greatly influenced Robert’s life. His father was a physician in army, a position which required frequent foreign postings. The family stayed in various areas of East Asia for most of Robert’s youth. This experience contributed to his appreciation for cultures and mastery of several languages. Robert was a hardworking academic, collector of art and manuscripts, and translator of ancient writings. He studied and trained to become a master musician on the Chinese guqin, and eventually wrote two books on the instrument. Similarly, his skills as an artist in the traditional Chinese style and knowledge of calligraphy were unparalleled. He wrote and published a number of non-fiction, scholarly articles and books on Chinese music, art, and literature, as well as Chinese culture and folk legends. In 1940, Robert came across a little-known and anonymous (匿名的)18th-century Chinese novel that would take his career down an unplanned pathway and result in the public fame he never anticipated. The novel, titled Four Great Strange Cases of Empress Wu’s Reign, was a fictional account of the deeds of Judge Dee, one of the heroes of traditional Chinese detective fiction, and was set in the 7th-century Tang Dynasty. Fascinated, Robert not only translated the novel into English, he also did some research on the history of Chinese Penal Code and other legal literature of the period. It was not until 1949 that Robert was able to publish his translation —Dee Goong An: Three Murder Cases Solved by Judge Dee. Robert’s Chinese mysteries comprise over 10 novels and short-story volumes, recording the career of Chinese detective called Di Renjie. Interestingly, the tales first found fame in oriental (东方的)editions, before being translated into English in 1957. Through all the novels by Robert he impressively brings to life the sights and sounds of daily Chinese life in the past. His passionate devotion and respect for the Chinese culture was never discounted, yet he also appreciated the purpose of fiction. 24. What inspired Robert’s love for oriental culture? A. His language competence. B. His previous stay in East Asia. C. His mother’s good family background. D. His father’s professional medical knowledge. 25. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A. Robert’s passion for China. B. Robert’s music proficiency. C. Robert’s early achievements. D. Robert’s learning experiences. 26. What contributed to Robert’s fame? A. He introduced western civilization to China. B. He polished an existing Chinese fiction style. C. He spread Chinese literature to a wider audience. D. He conducted research on famous Chinese detectives. 27. Which of the following can best describe Robert’s translations? A. Vivid and faithful. B. Dramatic and realistic. C. Accurate and humorous. D. Imaginary and accessible. C Children exposed to videos by caregivers for their calming or “babysitting” benefits tended to use phrases and sentences with fewer words. A new study from Southern Methodist University psychologist Sarah Kucker and colleagues reveals that passive video use among children can negatively affect language development, but their caregiver’s motivations for exposing them to digital media could also lessen the impact. Published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, the study involved 302 caregivers of children between 17 and 30 months. Caregivers answered questions about their child’s words, sentences, and how much time they spend on different media activities each day. Those activities included video/TV, video games, video chat, and e-books, with caregivers explaining why they use each activity with their child. Print book reading was also compared. Researchers looked at the amount of media use and the reasons provided by caregivers for their children’s media use. These factors were then compared to the children’s vocabulary and length using two or more words together. The research reveals a negative association between high levels of digital media watching and children’s vocabulary development. However, the negative impact on language skills was lessened when videos were used for educational purposes or to foster social connections-such as through video chats with family members. Kucker acknowledges that parents often use digital media to occupy children while they complete tasks. She suggests that caregivers need to consider what kind of videos and how much their children are watching, and whether they can interact with them during this period. Future research by Kucker and her colleagues will continue to explore the types of videos young children watch, how they use screens with others, and how that impacts language development. 28. What is the potential impact of being exposed to videos by caregivers on children? A. It enhances their vocabulary development. B. It has no significant effect on their language skills. C. It leads to the use of shorter phrases and sentences. D. It encourages them to read print books more often. 29. What do paragraph 2 and 3 tell us about the study? A. Its research process. B. Its theoretical basis. C. Its underlying logic. D. Its scientific evidence. 30. Under what circumstance can the negative impact be lessened? A. When children focus on tasks. B. When children get involved in the content. C. When videos serve as entertainment. D. When videos aid learning and bond building. 31. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To point out the significance of the study. B. To bring out the focus of follow-up studies. C. To present the practical application of the findings. D. To discuss other affecting factors of babies’ growth. D Sir Isaac Newton was a great astronomer. Although he did not use his reflecting telescope to discover new astronomical phenomena, he did employ it to completely transform our view of the world we inhabit and the universe at large. Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to reflect and focus light and enlarge images, distinguishing them from refractors (折射望远镜) that rely on lenses (透镜). Their simplicity in construction and ability to achieve much greater sizes than refractors have led to a transformation in our astronomical knowledge and comprehension of the universe. As light passes through glass, various colors or bands are refracted at varying angles, leading to chromatic aberration (色差) and consequently, twisted images when viewed through a lens. In the time of Newton, the technology for producing glass and lenses was still very primitive, and the challenges associated with chromatic aberration had not been adequately addressed. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. As the size of a lens increases significantly, it becomes extremely heavy, causing its own weight to distort the lens and consequently ruin the image quality. Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t allow light to pass. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. This means there’s no chromatic aberration. Plus, because we only need to bounce light off the surface, we can support the entire mirror on a base, reducing its weight. This allows us to build much larger mirrors without any distortion. While Galileo is credited with the discovery of moons around Jupiter and Halley with predicting the comet’s orbit, what Newton did do was tie in with mathematics, astronomy and our comprehension of the universe through the use of his telescope and his universal gravitation theory. The original telescope constructed by Newton is preserved and maintained by the Royal Society of London. It is showcased in London and occasionally embarks on international tours as an element of exhibitions. 32. What do we know about Newton’s telescope? A. It has a great size with complex structure. B. It relies on mirrors instead of lenses. C. It can make the image smaller than a refractor. D. It helped Newton uncover novel astronomical phenomena. 33. What problems did Newton’s telescope manage to solve? A. Restrictions on the production. B. Issues with image quality. C. Challenges of lens making. D. Limits of light’s passing angles. 34. Why does the author mention Galileo and Halley? A. To state a fact. B. To raise a point. C. To explain a concept. D. To make a comparison. 35. What is the main idea of the article? A. Newton’s telescope is preserved by the Royal Society as a historical scientific antique. B. Newton’s telescope simplified construction and enabled larger sizes compared to refractors. C. Newton’s telescope innovated astronomy by solving problems caused by lens limitations. D. Newton’s telescope achieved breakthrough improvements over refractors, observing new astronomical phenomena. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The small habits really damage the wallet. You see, Leopold is a picky eater— he lives on chicken nuggets and yogurt— and can be hesitant to try new things. I was hoping to find a way to encourage him without resorting to worn-out saying like“If you don’t try it, you’ ll never know if you like it.” So I borrowed the idea of a Yes Day, something our family has done a handful of times since watching the movie of the same name. Before the trip, Leopold and I agreed we would say yes to everything, including food and experiences— especially new ones. We started saying yes before we even boarded our flight, when we stopped at a breakfast buffet at the airport. For me, that meant I sampled a vegan meatball, while Leopold tried a mouse bite of hash browns he said looked“funny”. After we got settled at our hotel, I took Leopold to meet his skiing instructor. While he was doing his skiing practice, I skied by myself. On the first day, I played it safe and stuck to the long and winding easy green run. On the second day, I challenged myself to ski an intermediate blue run. There was a part steeper than I had thought, but I did my slow, diligentS-turns and I made it down in one piece. Leopold had taken a few lessons back at home in Connecticut but had never had the opportunity to ski on a mountain of this size. My hope was that he would make the most of this opportunity. So I encouraged him to ride a chairlift(吊椅式缆车) to the top and then ski down. Leopold’s anxiety was evident as we stood at the base of the mountain. His eyes widened at the sight of the chairlift, and he clutched my hand tightly. 注意: (1) 续写词数应为150个左右; (2) 请按照如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “I don’t want to do this, Mom.” he whispered, his voice trembling. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Leopold returned from his skiing adventure, flushing with excitement. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 江西省九江市武宁县振风高级中学2024-2025学年度下学期高二英语3月阶段测试试题 一、听力选择题(总分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 What would the man want to buy? The old man who had come in ahead of us was luckier; he had a stick to help him find his way, like a blind man. “It’s very funny not to have any lights on before the film starts,” I commented. “And no music, either,” added my husband. “Well, perhaps they are saving money?” We were in one of the rows nearest the entrance. We heard others pass by but we could not tell how big the audience was. Obviously, however, the cinema did not get very crowded at that time of day. “It must be two o’clock already,” my husband said, getting restless. “Can you see your watch?” My eyes had now grown accustomed to the darkness and by bringing my watch close to my eyes, I could just make out that it was a little after two. Just then the program started. But we were disappointed to find that there had been a change. The second of the two films, which we were not interested in seeing, was being shown first. 二、阅读理解(总分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A When you choose to study abroad in Madrid, please read below to learn more. Through all the novels by Robert, he impressively brings to life the sights and sounds of daily Chinese life in the past. His passionate devotion and respect for the Chinese culture was never discounted, yet he also appreciated the purpose of fiction. 24. What inspired Robert’s love for oriental culture? A. 【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. 【答案】32. B 33. B 34. D 35. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“I don’t want to do this, Mom.” he whispered, his voice trembling. I knelt down to meet his gaze and said gently, “Leopold, we’re here to say yes.” I saw a flicker of determination in his eyes as he nodded yes. He inched towards the chairlift, white-knuckled during the whole ride, but he didn’t look back. He reached the top and prepared to descend, my heart in my throat. The first few moments were shaky, but with each turn, Leopold grew more confident. The sun cast long shadows across the snow, highlighting his progress as he navigated the slope. The once shaky turns evolved into a graceful ballet with the mountain. Leopold returned from his skiing adventure, flushing with excitement. “I did it, Mom!” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with pride. As he recounted the exciting plunge down the slope and the refreshing chilly wind against the cheeks, his voice was filled with a newfound confidence. I squeezed his hand, showing I was so proud of him. Leopold looked up at me, his eyes mirroring the vast expanse of the sky above. I wrapped him in a warm embrace, our laughter mingling in the frosty air, a visible symbol of shared triumph. The snowcapped mountains, with its awe-inspiring elegance, stood as a silent testament to the power of saying yes to life’s challenges. 词汇激活 行为类 ①到达:reach /get to ②大叫到:exclaime / yell ③讲述:recount / narrate 情绪类 ①激动的:exciting /thrilling ②决心:determination/ resolution ③自豪:proud of/take pride of 【点睛】[高分句型1].
