Thomas was born in a remote village. To live a better life, he moved to New York. He started as a delivery man and was a hard worker. Thomas worked his way up from a delivery man to working in a factory and, finally, running the factory. Despite his rapid rise to success, he found himself lonely. Thomas wasn’t much of a social butterfly outside of work. He was more worried about underprivileged kids around the city. He always went to the children shelters in the area. And he not only donated money and food to the shelters, but he would also spend his free time with kids. Quickly he earned an adorable nickname “Thomas The Tank” from the kids.
One December, Thomas had a huge order approaching delivery, but there was a strike happening. If the deliveries were late because of the strike, he would lose a lot of money. Thomas was worried everything he had worked for would go down the drain. When he visited a shelter, everyone could tell something was wrong. “Why are you so sad? ” Rachel asked. Even though Rachel was only 11 years old, she was pretty smart. Thomas explained the situation to Rachel in a sad mood. After Thomas returned to work, Rachel told everyone at the shelter about his problem. Together, nurses and children from the shelters that Thomas helped around the town made a secret plan. They divided into groups, and each group took a separate area of the city so that all the orders would make it to each location.
On the deadline of the delivery day, Thomas was surprised to find that the packages had gone out. After knowing what had happened, Thomas cried tears of joy because his factory was able to survive after all. Since then, it became a tradition to barbecue for the community at a nearby park every December. They did this to commemorate how the people came together during a crisis.

7. What was the purpose of the community’s barbecue tradition?
A. To raise funds for underprivileged children. B. To promote the importance of outdoor activities.
C. To remember the town’s unity in special cases. D. To celebrate Thomas’s success as a factory owner.

What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting? Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK’s obsession (痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling. Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
8. What do people usually think of British food?
A. It is simple and plain. B. It is rich in nutrition.
C. It lacks authentic tastes. D. It deserves a high reputation.
9. Which best describes cookery programme on British TV?
A. Authoritative. B. Creative. C. Profitable. D. Influential.
10. Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now?
A. 20%. B. 24%. C. 25%. D. 33%.
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. The art of cooking in other countries. B. Male chefs on TV programmes.
C. Table manners in the UK. D. Studies of big eaters.
A 9. D 10. D 11. B
根据第一段的“What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting?”(当你想到英国食物时,你会想到什么? 故选A项。
根据第二段的“It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits.”(正是由于电视上的这些大厨,而不是凭借广告宣传活动,英国人正在远离“一肉两菜”和速食餐,而变得更加愿意探索新的烹饪习惯。)和“It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.”(似乎电视节目帮助改变了人们对烹饪的看法。)
根据第三段的“Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before.”(几乎三分之一的人表示他们现在使用的配料比以前更多,将近四分之一的人表示他们现在购买的配料质量比以前更好。)
根据第三段最后一句“With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.”(随着电视上出现越来越多男性厨师,男孩子喜欢烹饪不再是一件“不酷”的事了。)

Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 Stuns (震惊) the World
January 20,2025,a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeekR1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码) , and answer questions like top models such as OpenAl’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U. S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
12. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies
B. To explain how computer chips work.
C. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
D. To encourage students to become programmers
13. What does the underlined “improves by itself” mean in paragraph 2?
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It becomes better through practice.
C. It copies answers from other AIs. D. It only works with expensive tools.
14. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A. To help Chinese companies.
B. To build more computer chips.
C. To keep up with advancements like DeepSeek-R1.
D. To hire German scientists.
15. What does the writer think is the most important for success?
A. Having enough money. B. Copying other countries ideas.
C. Using the latest computer chips. D. Creativity and tireless efforts.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D

通读全文可知,文章开篇提到“January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek - R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT - 40, but it costs much less to build.(2025年1月20日,中国科技公司DeepSeek研发出名为DeepSeek - R1的新型人工智能。这款智能程序能解决数学题、编写代码、回答问题,性能媲美OpenAI的GPT - 40 等顶尖模型,但开发成本低得多。)”,接着后文围绕DeepSeek - R1的学习方式、使用成本、对全球的影响等方面进行介绍,所以文章主要目的是介绍中国的低成本AI模型 DeepSeek - R1。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“DeepSeek - R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself.(DeepSeek - R1 通过反复尝试、逐步改进的方式学习,就像学生练习数学题一样。其他 AI 需要大量标注范例,但R1能 improves by itself。)”可知,DeepSeek-R1像学生练习数学一样,通过多次尝试变得更好。由此可知,此处为“但是R1能通过练习自己提升”,所以improves by itself意思是“通过自身练习变得更好”。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research.(美国科技公司感到担忧。Meta 计划在人工智能研究上再投入650亿美元。)”可知,Meta计划投入更多资金是因为中国AI的发展让美国科技公司感到了压力,它想跟上像DeepSeek-R1这样的进步。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As a DeepSeek engineer said, ‘We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.’ With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.(正如一位 DeepSeek 工程师所说:‘我们希望人工智能成为朋友,而不是只有富人才能使用的东西。’通过 R1,中国向世界表明,伟大的成就源于创新思维与辛勤努力,而不仅仅是金钱。)”可知,作者认为成功最重要的是创造力和不懈的努力。故选D项。

4. What does the underlined word “underprivileged” mean in the first paragraph?

What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting? Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way.

My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “The dream is priceless.” However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular thing happened, which almost ruined (毁坏) my long-held dream.
