A Guide to Cycling in Bayside, Melbourne
Cycling is growing in Australia, and local sports stars inspire more people to try riding bikes. Melbourne’s Bayside is a perfect place to start. A local bike rider shares his best tips for riding in Bayside and on Beach Road — one of the most popular roads for cycling.
Where to Shop
There are many shops in Bayside for all your cycling needs. Big stores like Giant and Hampton Cycles have bikes for all levels and are good places to start if you’re new. For more experienced riders, Terry Hammond and O’Mara Cycles offer professional choices.
The Best Routes
Beach Road is the centre for some of Bayside’s best rides. You can ride towards the city or to the Mornington Peninsula.
When to Ride
Beach Road is often busy, so it’s good to know the quiet times, especially if you’re new to the area.
Weekdays: 11 a.m. — 4 p.m. are usually safer times to ride. Without a lot of traffic around, this is an ideal time to get out and practise riding.
Weekends: Before 9 a.m. is best when most cycling groups are on the road.
Joining a Local Group
It’s best to find a friend who knows about group riding before joining a group, as it can be hard and unsafe without experience. Riding with someone experienced who currently is part of a group is a great way to the skills of group riding. Many riders meet at local coffee shops like Cafe Corsair and Brown Cow Hampton between 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Tips for Safe Riding
Beach Road has a bike path you can use if you feel nervous or there’s too much traffic. Always have a light on your bike, even during the day, especially in winter when it gets dark early. The St Kilda Cycling Club is good for new members, offering groups for different ages and levels.
1. What makes weekday and weekend riding time different?
A. Visiting hours. B. Traffic situations. C. Group sizes. D. Safety levels.
2. What’s suggested for people seeking to start riding in a group?
A. Finding an experienced friend in a group. B. Practising skilfully.
C. Reading guides carefully. D. Comparing different groups.
3. Where is the text most likely taken from?
A. A book review. B. A science magazine. C. A cycling guide. D. A news report.

Isabella Bardon, an 18-year-old cancer survivor from Graniteville, does not take her time for granted and takes all the chances she can. “I think people take their time for granted. I’ve fallen into depressions where I’m just at home for months, but I could’ve been doing way more than that.” Bardon shared. Her passion for life strengthened after she was diagnosed with leukemia (白血病) at age 13 in 2019.
Bardon started chemotherapy (化疗) at Maimonides Medical Centre in Brooklyn. She described the treatment as smooth, noting that doctors made an effort to make her feel heard. She spent a month in the hospital, experiencing hair loss and other side effects. After the initial stay, she had two-week hospitalizations every few months for a total of six months of chemotherapy. She then started maintenance therapy until she turned 16.
“I think that honestly my hobbies became stronger and more noticeable in my life because of my diagnosis. I started to do my makeup when I was 13 because, you know, my eyebrows were thinning from all the chemotherapy, so I wanted to look more presentable,” she said. During quarantine (隔离期) she spent time online studying and worked with her grandma and mum to repair clothes. She also started making jewelry.
Bardon recently returned from a trip to Italy after graduating high school. She’s taking a gap year to work and travel more, with plans to study fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology next year. “Italy was amazing. I loved it there, I am thinking about studying abroad. Ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to travel the world.” Bardon said.
September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. When thinking about her own diagnosis, Bardon says she is ready to move on. “I try not to let it really define my life. I am doing other things now. I’ve moved on and I try not to dwell on it because I think it wastes my time just thinking about the past: it’s something I am never going to be able to change.” she said.
4. Which of the following can best describe Bardon’s treatment?
A. Brief and easy. B. Long and complex. C. Ineffective. D. Experimental.
5. How did Bardon’s cancer diagnosis affect her hobbies?
A. It wiped them out. B. It changed them slightly
C. It strengthened them. D. It confused them.
6. What does Bardon’s interest in studying abroad suggest?
A. She dislikes her hometown. B. She fears commitment.
C. She values new experiences D. She avoids responsibilities.
7. What does the underlined part “dwell on” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Live in. B. Give in temporarily. C. Ignore completely. D. Think a lot about.

Figuring out what our ancestors were up to thousands of years ago is no easy task — but in some regions of the planet, it’s made even harder by a lack of archaeological evidence. One such place is the Mediterranean islands. Working out when humans first arrived here has been a tricky puzzle, but it’s closer to being solved thanks to a submerged (水面下的) bridge buried deep inside an ancient cave.
A team led by Professor Bogdan Onac recently went to Mallorca’s Genovesa Cave to conduct a study of the 7.6-metre underwater bridge. “The presence of this underwater bridge and other artifacts indicates a complex level of activity, implying that early settlers recognized the cave’s water resources and strategically built structures to move through it,” Onac said in a statement.
One of the Spanish Balearic Islands, Mallorca is the sixth largest island in the Mediterranean and has a number of incredible historical sites and evidence of ancient settlements. The most recent thinking, based on studies of charcoal, ash, and bones, suggests that our forebears first reached the island about 4,400 years ago. This fits with other key events in the island’s history.
However, by exploring the secrets hidden within the Genovesa Cave, Onac’s team is beginning to doubt this timeline. The coastal cave is now flooded in several passages due to rising sea levels over the years. Combining this data with a distinctive light-coloured band towards the top of the bridge, the team estimates that it was constructed between 6,000 and 5,600 years ago. This indicates that early humans may have been present on the island more than 2,000 years earlier than previously thought.
“The exact reasons behind the construction of these structures in Genovesa Cave remain hard to explain.” the authors write. We can only guess the importance of this cave to our ancestors, but studies like this, which combine expert knowledge from different fields to reveal previously hidden secrets, are another reminder that it’s always good to keep an open mind when it comes to the study of our past.
8. What did researchers find in Mallorca?
A. A bridge underwater. B. Some prehistoric bones.
C. Several cave paintings. D. Ancient hunting tools.
9. What can be inferred about the early settlers from the discovery?
A. They only used caves for shelter. B. They lived near water randomly.
C. They built simple stone paths. D. They built structures to move through the water.
10. What is one of the previous evidence to indicate early settlement?
A. Ancient cave drawings. B. Underwater structures.
C. Burnt remains found. D. Tool collections discovered.
11. What can we learn about ancient history research from the last paragraph?
A. Facts come from one source. B. Past mysteries need quick answers.
C. Studies require expert knowledge only. D. Multiple approaches reveal ancient stories.
D
A recent study suggests that the timing of sleep may play a significant role in enhancing motor memories. Researchers found that motor memories can be significantly enhanced when sleep closely follows practice. The study aimed to explore whether sleep plays a role in strengthening motor memories, or if this process is merely a function of time.
To test their theory, the researchers conducted experiments involving 290 participants. The study used a visuomotor (视觉运动) adaptation task where participants had to move a cursor (光标) on a computer screen to hit targets using a joystick, sometimes with changed cursor movement. This task allowed researchers to measure how well participants maintained the ability to adapt to these changes — a measure of motor memory.
In the first experiment where the timing between training and sleep was not controlled, there was no significant difference in memory results between participants who slept and those who did not. However, the second experiment revealed that motor memories were most weak and uncertain within the first hour after training. The third experiment provided the most convincing evidence: when participants trained just before going to sleep, their memory retention (保持) was significantly better — by about 30% — than when they trained and stayed awake for several hours before sleeping.
The improvement was tied to specific changes in brain activity during sleep. These changes were particularly noticeable over the brain hemisphere (半球) opposite to the hand used in the task.
The significance of this study is far-reaching. If the timing of sleep can significantly enhance motor memory, this could change how we approach skill training and rehabilitation (康复). Athletes might benefit from napping shortly after practice, and rehabilitation programmes could be optimized by combining therapy sessions with patients’ sleep schedules. However, future research needs to address whether these findings apply to more complex, real-life activities and whether shorter naps could have a similar effect as a full night of sleep.
12. Why did researchers use a task with changing cursor movement?
A. To test reaction speed. B. To measure hand strength.
C. To assess visual perception. D. To evaluate skill adaptation retention.
13. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Sleep length effects on memory. B. The relationship between sleep timing and skill memory.
C. Short sleep benefits after training. D. Individual differences in skill learning.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards the study?
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
15 Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. New Discoveries in Brain Activity B. Timing Sleep for Better Motor Skills
C. Sleep: The Ultimate Memory Booster D. Revolutionizing Athletic Training Methods

Vitamin D is hugely important to your health, and I don’t just mean bone health. Humans need vitamin D for immune (免疫) function, cell growth and repair, and many other things. So how can we get this important thing? ____16____
Choose sunlight to get vitamin D.
Before I discuss food sources, I do want to address the issue of where vitamin D comes from in the first place. The primary sources are sunlight and food (and supplements), so if you get plenty of sun, you don’t need to worry about meeting your needs through food, and vice versa. ____17____ That depends on your latitude (纬度) on the Earth and how dark or light your skin is. In Miami in the summer, it only takes a few minutes for a person with a medium skin tone to get their vitamin D for the day. In Boston in the winter, that same person might take two hours to get the same amount of vitamin D.
Add vitamin D to your diet.
____18____ Fish carry tons of vitamin D in their fat, so fatty fish like trout and salmon tend to be great sources of the vitamin. Cod liver oil always tops lists of vitamin D sources, as if people are buying cod liver oil and taking spoonfuls of it like in old cartoons. Several land animals also make enough vitamin D to be worth considering as a good source of vitamin D, like chicken eggs, beef livers. ____19____ There is some vitamin D naturally present in the milkfat, so skim milk doesn’t usually have much vitamin D, but whole milk does — and it’s often fortified (强化) to bring those levels up even more.
____20____
Health professionals generally agree that if you aren’t sure if you’re getting enough vitamin D from food and the sun, just take a supplement. That’s going to be safer than trying to meet all your needs through sunlight, since the vitamin-converting rays of the sun are the same rays that can potentially contribute to skin cancer.
A. Eat more animal products.
B. Take a vitamin D supplement.
C. Milk is famously a good source of vitamin D.
D. How much sun do you need to get enough vitamin D?
E. How much vitamin D do you need in food each day?
F. Then let’s take a look at which foods have the most vitamin D.
G. Usually, we can get vitamin D from sunlight, food and supplements.

Dylan and Emily had been carefully setting aside money to pay for their wedding, which they hoped to have within the next year or so. However, their plans took an unexpected turn.
One day after work, when looking through a social media, Dylan saw a post about a little dog that had been hit by a car and left to die on the side of a country road. Without hesitation, Dylan and Emily grabbed some towels and blankets, threw them into their car, and drove about 20 minutes to the spot where the dog had been last seen.
There the dog was, about 8 to 10 months old, lying off the side of the road in a driveway, wet and shaking slightly from the rain that had been falling throughout the day. Dylan noticed that its back legs were covered in blood and appeared to be broken. Despite the pain, the dog tried to crawl towards him, and when Dylan got close, the dog gently put its head in his lap. Dylan could sense its discomfort, but the dog didn’t make a sound. He decided to temporarily name the female dog Acklin for the name of the road where she was found.
With Emily’s help, Dylan safely transported Acklin into the trunk of their car. Then Emily went door to door to ask if anyone knew the dog, while Dylan searched for the nearest animal hospital on his phone. Their worries increased when Acklin started coughing; she might have internal bleeding.
With the lights on, they drove 10 miles to an animal hospital nearby. The vets (兽医) examined the dog, finding both of her back legs were broken and she had two bruised lungs (肺挫伤). They warned Dylan that one of her legs might need to be cut off, and the total cost of treatment could range from $10,000 to $15,000.
Through the media, they soon learned that the dog’s owner had been located. However, the owner announced that she couldn’t afford the cost of treatment and then hung up. Dylan and Emily felt a heavy burden on their hearts.

【答案】Dear fellow students,
As global climate change becomes increasingly serious, we cannot wait any longer to protect our environment. To build a beautiful campus and a beautiful homeland, I call on everyone to take action together and create a green lifestyle.
Starting with small things around us, please turn off lights when not in use, and try to walk or cycle to school. Use reusable shopping bags and reduce the use of disposable items. Sort and dispose of waste such as paper and beverage bottles properly. Every small step by each individual is a big step for environmental protection.
Looking forward to your participation!
Yours,
Li Hua

They consulted on this matter, and eventually had to make a difficult decision. Dylan and Emily knew that their wedding fund was meant for their special day, but they couldn’t ignore the helpless dog in need. They decided to use the money they had saved for their wedding to pay for Acklin’s medical expenses. It wasn’t an easy choice, but they felt it was the right thing to do. They comforted each other with the thought that they could have sufficient time to save money and plan for their wedding again.
Several days later, Dylan and Emily planned to pick up Acklin and bring her home. They were both excited and nervous, wondering how Acklin would react to her new family members. When they arrived at the animal hospital, they were greeted by a small, but spirited dog who seemed to be recovering well. The vets had successfully treated her injuries and although one of her legs was cut off, she was still able to move around. Acklin wagged her tail and licked their faces, showing her gratitude. Dylan and Emily knew that this little dog had brought a new meaning to their lives, and they couldn’t wait to give her the love and care.
