A
Four Best Places to Visit in November
Here are four top places to travel to in November for relaxation.
North Island, New Zealand
Spring brings New Zealand sunny days and wildflowers. The North Island will be warmer than the South — Auckland average high is 20℃ this month. It’s packed with geothermal (地热的) activity, so if it does get a little cold, you can warm up at Rotorua and Lake Taupo or find wild-and-free thermal pools like Kerosene Creek, which has a hot waterfall.
Valletta, Malta
Malta in Southern Europe is a big draw this month. The Mediterranean climate means it stays almost summery through November, with temperatures around 21℃. Capital city Valletta was founded by the Knights (骑士) of Malta in the 16th century — and hasn’t changed much since. To appreciate it from water level, it’s a good idea to sail across the Grand Harbor in an open boat. Then get off at Vittoriosa, one of the three cities facing Valletta, and get lost in its backstreets.
Death Valley, USA
In November, the average high in this national park is pleasant 25℃. All the campgrounds are open and quiet, and its roads and dirt tracks are free of ice and traffic lights. So riding a bike is a great way of getting in among the peaks, dunes (沙丘), salt flats and odd rock formations. Drive down from Daylight Pass into the valley. Don’t miss the climb to Dante’s View for a whole view over the Black Mountains and Badwater Basin.
Seville and Jeréz, Spain
While most of Europe begins to turn cold, it’s still T-shirt weather here (expect highs of 20℃) in November. Combine Jeréz with Seville, also jam-packed with snack bars and world-class sights: the splendid Mudéjar-style Real Alcázar palace and the world’s largest Gothic (哥特式的) church. Wander along the Guadalquivir River and in the Triana district for flamenco dance and bullfighting.
21. Which place is perfect for enjoying a hot spring?
A. Valletta, Malta. B. Seville and Jeréz, Spain.
C. Death Valley, USA. D. North Island, New Zealand.
22. What are visitors advised to do in Death Valley?
A. Tour an ancient palace for bullfighting.
B. Sail across Badwater Basin in an open boat.
C. Cycle through the national park’s open roads.
D. Explore the peaks dunes and salt flats by car.
23. What do the four places have in common?
A. They offer convenient facilities. B. They have pleasant weather.
C. They focus on traditional dances. D. They are famous for snacks.

As a little girl, I was crazy about every science and nature channel, loving shows like Planet Earth that let me get up close with a bird-eating tarantula (狼蛛). Although absorbed in wildlife, I was too frightened to go into nature myself. Later when I was in high school, the disconnect became really clear when I collapsed after getting hit in the face by a flying beetle (甲虫). “Hmm. This might cause a problem,” I thought. I considered nature to be an unpredictable and unsafe space for me.
Eventually, I turned my interest to microbiology, enjoying the comfortable environment of a lab where dangerous things were contained in test tubes. Then for my Doctor of Philosophy, I joined the lab of a field scientist named Elizabeth Hadly for a project that focused on bats as a source of infectious diseases. When I joined the Hadly lab, everyone else had field experience except me. So I immediately counted myself out when Elizabeth announced a month-long trip to Botswana, but Elizabeth convinced me to go.
During our trip to Botswana’s Okavango Delta, when resting one afternoon, I heard our guide Gareth calmly inform us, “There’s an elephant right behind you.” I then noticed a massive male elephant hiding behind a small tree. Gareth explained this elephant was in a period of heightened reproductive signals that could cause aggression (挑衅).
We all slowly inched our way back to our car while Gareth was making loud noise shaking a large fallen tree branch at the elephant. “He should be afraid right now. I’m in the safety of this car and I’m still afraid. This is exactly why I shouldn’t be here,” I thought. Looking around, I saw tense faces and realized I wasn’t the only one who was stressed out. At that moment, I realized that feeling afraid didn’t have to disqualify me from being a field scientist.
The elephant eventually left. The encounter made me more present, and while my mind was focused on the elephant in front, the one in my head quietly disappeared as well.
24. How did a flying beetle affect the author?
A. Her passion for science grew. B. She had negative ideas about nature.
C. She enjoyed TV shows more. D. Her curiosity about birds disappeared.
25. Why did the author join the Hadly lab?
A. To get field experience. B. To overcome her fear.
C. To help with her degree. D. To advocate disease study.
26. How did the other people feel when encountering the elephant?
A. Nervous. B. Qualified. C. Inspired. D. Calm.
27. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. She centered more on the elephant. B. The guide’s behaviors aggressed her.
C. Her stress from work was reduced. D. Her fear of field work got nonexistent.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D

In Hungary, every few months, a group of volunteers gather for the Plastic Cup, a competition where teams go up against each other to collect as much rubbish as possible. “The name comes from the American Cup, a famous boat race,” said the Plastic Cup’s project manager, Gergely Hankó, adding, “We have many volunteers, including companies and decision-makers. Everybody is forming the team.”
The most recent Plastic Cup meeting was held on Hungary’s Lake Tisza and the Tisza River, the Danube’s longest tributary (支流). Besides huge amounts of plastic like bottles, volunteers often fish out metal cans, tyres, batteries and so on. Around 150 volunteers joined this cleanup, with one participant noting, “It’s always good fun and we’re making friends and having fun while doing good.”
Nearly half of Earth’s surface waters are in river basins shared by at least two countries. These support around 40% of the world’s population. “Unluckily, there’s much pollution in every river globally. The Danube transfers 1,500 tons of plastic, the Tisza around 250 tons, and we can stop 100 tons per year,” Gergely said when stressing the broader impact of the Plastic Cup project.
This year’s cleanup on the Tisza River also falls on Danube Day, a yearly event held across several European countries to mark the signing of the Danube River Protection Convention. “What we can do is to collect and remove plastic rubbish from the Tisza River and its tributaries, and we also have a monitoring system to keep the pollution under observation,” said Örs Antal from Hungary’s General Directorate of Water Management. “The situation has improved a lot, which is good news, but a step towards a permanent measure would be whether we could strengthen international cooperation.”
Agreeing with the opinion, Gergely said more cooperation would be needed between countries that share surface waters. “We need everybody to clean up the Tisza basin and the Danube basin,” he said. “Every country has to develop its Extended Producer Responsibility system and its Deposit Return system. Then you have to deal with the producers, work on eco-design, reduce the packaging, and reduce the generated rubbish.”
28. How can the participants benefit from the competition?
A. Have a larger social circle. B. Obtain more survival skills.
C. Be better at making decisions. D. Learn a rich knowledge of teamwork.
29. Why are the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To draw more attention to the Tisza.
B. To indicate the necessity for the project.
C. To show the popularity of the competition.
D. To stress the shortage of the water resource.
30. What does the Hungarian government probably do in order to protect the Danube river?
A. Organize daily cleanup activities. B. Establish their own Danube Day.
C. Force companies to pick up rubbish. D. Watch the pollution through a device.
31. What is necessary for a lasting solution to river pollution according to Gergely?
A. Increasing the number of volunteers. B. Setting up more environmental events.
C. Strengthening international partnerships. D. Reducing the cost of cleanup operations.
A 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第三段“Nearly half of Earth’s surface waters are in river basins shared by at least two countries. These support around 40% of the world’s population. “Unluckily, there’s much pollution in every river globally. The Danube transfers 1,500 tons of plastic, the Tisza around 250 tons, and we can stop 100 tons per year,” Gergely said when stressing the broader impact of the Plastic Cup project.(地球近一半的地表水位于至少两个国家共有的河流流域。这些国家供养着世界上大约40%的人口。“不幸的是,全球每条河流都有很多污染。多瑙河运输1500吨塑料,蒂萨河大约250吨,我们每年可以停止100吨,”Gergely在强调塑料杯项目的更广泛影响时说)”可推断,作者在第三段提到这些数字旨在说明The Plastic Cup项目的必要性。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““What we can do is to collect and remove plastic rubbish from the Tisza River and its tributaries, and we also have a monitoring system to keep the pollution under observation,” said Örs Antal from Hungary’s General Directorate of Water Management.(匈牙利水资源管理总局的Örs Antal说:“我们所能做的就是收集和清除Tisza河及其支流的塑料垃圾,我们也有一个监测系统来监测污染情况。”)”
根据倒数第二段“The situation has improved a lot, which is good news, but a step towards a permanent measure would be whether we could strengthen international cooperation.(情况已经改善了很多,这是好消息,但迈向永久性措施的一步将是我们是否能加强国际合作)”及最后一段“Agreeing with the opinion, Gergely said more cooperation would be needed between countries that share surface waters. “We need everybody to clean up the Tisza basin and the Danube basin,” he said.( Gergely同意这一观点,他说共享地表水的国家之间需要更多的合作。他说:“我们需要每个人都来清理提萨盆地和多瑙河盆地。”)”可知,Gergely认为加强国际合作关系是一个持久解决水污染的办法。故选C。
D
Technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive approach to helping achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions (排放) by 2050, according to the recent Stanford-led research.
The technology involves gathering heat-absorbing bricks in an insulated (隔热) container, where they can store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use at the temperatures required for industrial processes. The heat can then be released when needed by passing air through channels in the piles of firebricks, thus allowing cement (水泥), steel, glass, and paper factories to run on renewable energy even when wind and sunshine are unavailable. These systems are a form of thermal energy storage. The bricks are made from the same materials as the insulating bricks that lined kilns (窑炉) thousands of years ago.
Batteries can store electricity and provide it to generate heat on demand. “The difference between firebrick storage and battery storage is that the firebricks store heat rather than electricity and are one-tenth the cost of batteries,” said lead study author Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor of Stanford University.
The researchers adopted computer models to compare costs, land needs, health impacts and emissions involved in two situations for an imagined future where 149 countries in 2050 are using renewables for all energy purposes. In one situation, firebricks provide 90% of industrial process heat. In the other, there’s zero adoption of firebricks or other forms of thermal energy storage. The researchers found the one with firebricks could cut capital costs by $1.27 trillion, while reducing the demand for electrical energy and energy storage capacity from batteries.
Jacobson’s focus on firebricks is relatively new, inspired by a desire to identify effective solutions that could be adopted quickly. “What excites me is that the impact of this method is very large, while many technologies I’ve looked at have marginal impacts,” he said. “Here I can see a substantial benefit at low cost from multiple angles, from helping reduce air pollution to making it easier to change the world into the one with clean renewables.”
32. What is paragraph 2 intended to show?
A. How firebrick storage technology works. B. How firebricks are produced sustainably.
C. What thermal energy storage is used to do. D. What insulated containers mean scientifically.
33. What does the author want to stress about firebrick storage in paragraph 4?
A. Its requirement. B. Its process. C. Its methods. D. Its advantages.
34. What does the underlined word “marginal” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Massive. B. Unimportant. C. Obvious. D. Negative.
35. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Importance Is Attached to Applications of Firebricks
B. It Is Nowadays Possible to Turn to Renewable Electricity
C. Bronze Age Technology Could Assist Switch to Clean Energy
D. Innovative Systems Produce Heat for Use in Industrial Processes
A 33. D 34. B 35. C
根据第二段内容,尤其是“The technology involves gathering heat-absorbing bricks in an insulated (隔热) container, where they can store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use at the temperatures required for industrial processes. (这项技术涉及将吸热砖块收集在一个隔热容器中,砖块可以储存由太阳能或风能产生的热量,以供在工业过程中所需温度下后续使用)”可推断,第二段旨在介绍耐火砖存储技术是如何运用的。故选A。
根据第四段中“The researchers found the one with firebricks could cut capital costs by $1.27 trillion, while reducing the demand for electrical energy and energy storage capacity from batteries. (研究人员发现,使用耐火砖的方案可以减少1.27万亿美元的资本成本,同时降低对电池电力和储能容量的需求)”可推断,作者在第四段重点强调耐火砖存储的优点。故选D。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段画线词前“What excites me is that the impact of this method is very large, while many technologies I’ve looked at have (让我感到兴奋的是,这种方法的影响非常大,而我之前研究过的许多技术)”及划线词后“impacts (影响)”可推断,while表示“转折”之意,划线词marginal的意思与large相反,与Unimportant意思一致,意为“不重要的”。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段“Technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive approach to helping achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions (排放) by 2050, according to the recent Stanford-led research. (根据最近由斯坦福大学领导的研究,一种可以追溯到青铜时代的古老技术可能为实现联合国到2050年净零排放的气候目标提供一种快速且低成本的方法)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项源于青铜时代的技术——耐火砖储能技术,它可能为实现联合国到2050年实现净零排放的气候目标提供一种快速且廉价的方法,即青铜时代的技术可以帮助向清洁能源转型。故C选项“Bronze Age Technology Could Assist Switch to Clean Energy(青铜时代的技术可以帮助向清洁能源转型)”作为文章标题最为合适。

上文“According to Large Almond Latte, searches like “concert outfits (服装) ” on TikTok are in the billions. (根据Large Almond Latte的数据,TikTok上‘演唱会穿搭’相关搜索量高达数十亿次)”及下文“People are really accepting their creativity, even doing DIY projects to get the perfect looks they were going for. (人们真正接受着自己的创造力,甚至通过DIY项目打造他们心仪的完美造型)”可知,空处承上启下,说明“演唱会服装”搜索量上升的原因是时尚潮流发生的变化,人们在自己的造型上发挥创造力,B选项中的“Creative”与下文中的“creativity”相呼应,所以B选项“有创意且有趣的装扮又回来了”,符合语境。故选B。
【37题详解】
下文“Going to a concert wearing one of the headliner’s typical outfits was a thing for years. Especially so when it came to rock concerts where dressing like the artist was really common. (多年来,穿着某位头条艺人标志性的服装去参加音乐会一直是一种潮流。尤其是在摇滚音乐会上,打扮得像艺人一样非常普遍)”说明,去音乐会穿主唱的典型服装是很常见的事,空处引出下文,E选项中的“Dressing up”与下文中的“wearing one of the headliner’s typical outfits”相呼应,所以E选项“根据《时尚杂志》,为活动盛装打扮并不是什么新鲜事”,符合语境。故选E。
【38题详解】
上文“Going to a concert wearing one of the headliner’s typical outfits was a thing for years. Especially so when it came to rock concerts where dressing like the artist was really common. For example, people used to wear fabrics and leather when going to a rock concert. (多年来,穿着明星的典型服装去听音乐会是一件司空见惯的事。尤其是在摇滚音乐会,穿得像艺术家是很常见的。例如,人们过去常常穿布料和皮革去听摇滚音乐会。)”及下文“But over time, the fan’s fun outfits were replaced by jackets, shirts and jeans. And it often happens with fashion. 故选A。
上文“Theme dressing for an event is popular for different reasons. You may want to theme dress for the connection it creates between you and the artist. It can also make you feel part of the team and that you’re a real fan. (活动主题装扮的流行有多重原因。你可能希望通过主题装扮来建立你与艺人之间的联系。这种装扮还可以让你感觉自己是团队的一部分,并且是一个真正的粉丝)”说明,主题装扮受欢迎的原因,空处承接上文,G选项中的“Or”并列了前后的原因,所以G选项“或者你一直喜欢这位艺术家的风格,现在你终于有机会穿上它了”,符合语境。故选G。
【40题详解】
上文“Whatever a person ends up deciding to wear, there’s no denying that theme dressing for an event can be fun, especially when you do it together with friends. (无论一个人最终决定穿什么,不可否认的是,为某个活动进行主题装扮会很有趣,尤其是当你和朋友一起这样做的时候)”及下文“So if you have an opportunity to theme dress, go for it!

Being an adult who didn’t know how to ride a bike became a joke about me. “Oh, that’s just Hannah,” my friends would laugh. “Of course, she can’t. She’s so uncoordinated (不协调).” I would usually laugh along with them. I lacked a good sense of balance. After all, it’s better to be laughed with than laughed at. Actually, I’d tried to learn before. Well-meaning friends would offer to teach me, and I would agree, only for the process to end up with me frightened and them disappointed.
One day, my friends and I planned a trip to see a friend’s hometown in Sweden. We were discussing the trip one morning when Jane cheered, “We can borrow bikes and do a tour through the village. It’ll be so fun!” Suddenly, she realized I was there and turned toward me with a look of pity. “Of course, walking will be just as nice.” “No, no, I’ll ride,” I replied. “I have plenty of time to learn.”
That afternoon when I got home, I talked to my husband Matt, who was a good cyclist, taking a deep breath as I faced him. “Can you teach me how to ride a bike?” He smiled, “Of course.” The next few weeks, Matt fully accepted this role. He watched videos online, visited local bike shops and purchased a helmet (头盔) for me.
Finally, the day came, and early that morning, we walked a bike to the local park. I won’t lie:The negative self-talk came in. You would never be able to do this. You had gotten this far in life not knowing how to do this, so why did you bother to learn now? I didn’t think I was ready to step far out of my comfort zone although I had overcome many difficult things. When we got to the park, the lesson began but nothing was working. I couldn’t master balance well. I was resisting everything Matt said to me. Worse still, the pedal (踏板) scratched (擦伤) the back of my ankle when I rolled on it, leaving me close to tears. “Wait here,” he said before jumping on the bike and riding off. And I threw myself onto the grass with my head in my hands.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
However, as I sat on the grass, another train of thoughts flashed into my mind.

Matt returned with a screwdriver (螺丝刀) in his hand.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
However, as I sat on the grass, another train of thoughts flashed into my mind. Who said you couldn’t learn to ride? I was surprised by this thought. I thought consciously about what I was thinking. I began exploring all the time when I had overcome things that were hard or different, and how proud of myself I had been. The longer I sat there, the stronger my resolve grew. By the time I saw Matt heading back towards me on the bike, I had been determined to accept the lesson and try my best.
Matt returned with a screwdriver (螺丝刀) in his hand. He removed the pedals so that I could practice rolling on the bike well to learn balance. By mid-morning, I could roll down the hill with ease. By that afternoon, to my surprise but also with great pride, I was riding a bike. I was in shock that I was doing something that had terrified me for much of my life. Meanwhile, I learnt that I should be confident and courageous to step outside my comfort zone.

D. Explore the peaks, dunes and salt flats by car.
23. What do the four places have in common?
A. They offer convenient facilities. B. They have pleasant weather.
C. They focus on traditional dances. D. They are famous for snacks.
B
As a little girl I was crazy about every science and nature channel, loving shows like Planet Earth that let me get up close with a bird-eating tarantula (狼蛛).
This is exactly why I shouldn’t be here” I thought.

28 How can the participants benefit from the competition?

32 What is paragraph 2 intended to show?

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
However, as I sat on the grass, another train of thoughts flashed into my mind.
