20. What did the speaker get in the end?
A. A lot of money. B. A precious medal. C. The joy of helping others.
A 18. B 19. A 20. C
M: I live in the center of the city where it rarely rains, so cars parked in open parking lots easily collect pollutants and dust. Together with my friends, I decided it should be a kind gesture to surprise the owners with a car wash. Every once in a while, someone would come by and ask us seemingly stupid men, “Who told you to wash the cars?” or, even better, “Who paid you to wash their cars?” We explained we just wanted to do something kind. But our response was often met with an even more confused look. As the afternoon went on, some other friends that came by understood our goal of the voluntary event and started helping out with some of the duties. I wasn’t cleaning cars for money. I was cleaning cars simply because I wanted to offer the car owners kindness. I now realize, first hand, that there is a special energy created when you choose to think bigger than yourself and act in service of others and maybe, like me, you’ll find it’s actually the greatest gift you’ll ever get.

Trade Routes That Shaped World History
Trade routes linking places of production to places of commerce have popped up throughout ancient history. These roads also facilitated cultural exchanges. Here are several that changed the world.
The Silk Road
The Silk Road is the most famous ancient trade route, linking the major ancient civilizations of China and the Roman Empire. Silk was traded from China to the Roman Empire beginning in the 1st century BCE in exchange for wool, silver, and gold coming from Europe. In addition to fostering trade, the Silk Road also became a vital route for the spread of knowledge, technology, religion, and art.
The Spice Routes
Unlike most of the other trade routes, the Spice Routes were oceanic paths linking the East to the West. Pepper, cloves and cinnamon were all hugely sought-after goods in Europe. From the 15th century to the 17th century, navigation technology made sailing long distances from Europe possible. Europeans took to the seas to create direct trading relationships with Indonesia, China, and Japan. Spice trade fueled the development of faster ships.
The Amber (琥珀) Routes
Amber has been traded since about 3000 BCE, with amber beads from the Baltic Sea region having reached as far as Egypt. The Romans, who valued the amber for both decorative and medicinal purposes, developed the Amber Routes linking the Baltic states with the rest of Europe. Today, you can find traces of the old Amber Road in Poland, where one of the major routes is known as the Amber Highway.
The Tea Horse Road
This ancient route winds for more than 6,000 miles, through the Hengduan Mountains—a major tea-producing area in China — and on to Xizang and India. The main goods traveling the route were Chinese tea and Xizang’s warhorses. Parts of the route were used starting about 1600 BCE, but people began using the entire path from around the 7th century, and large-scale trade began taking place starting in the Song Dynasty.
21. When did the most known trade route start?
A. In about 3000 BCE. B. In about 1600 BCE.
C. In the 15th century. D. In the 1st century BCE.
22. What is special about the Spice Routes?
A. They were sea trade roads. B. They linked the East and West.
C. Their remains can be found today. D. They were the longest trade roads.
23. What do the ancient trade routes show?
A. They began from BCE.
B. They linked different continents.
C. They contributed a lot to the world’s trade and culture.
D. Goods traded through them came from ancient China.

Do you love fossils and dinosaurs? I’m lucky enough to be a fossil preparator (化石制备师), which means I work with fossils, like removing rocks from fossils and gluing fossils together to make sure they’re not broken. Sometimes, we have dinosaur bones that need to be arranged and put back into place.
I like the job from the bottom of my heart. When we make “jackets” — these are things that store the fossils — we have to accurately and scientifically figure out how to make them for specific bones or fossils, which can be different shapes and artistic expression.
Since I was a kid, it’s been my dream to be a paleontologist When I was 12, I went to this kind of event at the Houston Museum of Natural Science called Dinosaur Day. I got a chance to meet paleontologists. At the end, I asked, “Hey, can I volunteer?” And somehow, they let me, as long as a parent came with me. At 12 years old, I got to go to a fossil excavation (挖掘), and I got to work with dinosaur bones and fossils in the lab for the first time.
Fossils are very old. We don’t always get all the pieces. We’re working with something that’s incomplete, sometimes. We do our best to fit the pieces we know back together. And as for the pieces we don’t know, we don’t try to make anything up. But sometimes, we have a gap in a specimen (标本) and it needs support. We’ll put some material in there that’s clearly not fossil, so when people go to study it, they know not to study that part.
People would wonder how I find other kids, especially girls, who shared my interests when I was growing up. As a matter of fact, in my friend group, I was the only dinosaur girl. My friends were interested in other things, but they were all super supportive of my love for fossils.
24. Why does the author like her job?
A. It is not a demanding job. B. It combines both art and science.
C. It is more artistic than scientific. D. It is about collecting dinosaur bones.
25. Why does the author mention her visit to her local museum?
A. To show her path to follow her dream. B. To prove her parents supporting her job.
C. To present the barrier of achieving her dream. D. To tell her easy access to achieving her dream.
26 How does the author deal with the incomplete fossils?
A. By burying them back in the ground. B. By breaking and reconstructing them.
C. By making them up with similar materials. D. By filling their gaps with distinct materials.
27. What kind of girl was the author when she was growing up?
A. Cautious. B. Understanding. C. Independent. D. Entertaining.
B 25. A 26. D 27. C

We’ll put some material in there that’s clearly not fossil, so when people go to study it, they know not to study that part.(有时候,我们在研究一些不完整的东西。
根据第三段中“At the end, I asked, ‘Hey, can I volunteer?’ And somehow, they let me, as long as a parent came with me.(最后,我问:‘嘿,我可以做志愿者吗?’不管怎么说,他们答应了我,只要有家长陪着我)”以及最后一段“As a matter of fact, in my friend group, I was the only dinosaur girl.(事实上,在我的朋友圈里,我是唯一一个喜欢恐龙的女孩)”可知,作者独自去博物馆参加活动,申请成为志愿者,在成长过程中是朋友圈里唯一一个喜欢恐龙的女孩,但是她却坚持自己的梦想成为一名化石制备者,推知她是特立独行的。故选C项。

Joyce Loaiza lives alone in a community for older people in the American state of Florida. When she is home, the retired office worker often talks with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few kilometers away, the same voice helped 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend passed away. And in New York State, it plays games and music for 92-year-old Marie Broadbent.
The women are some of the first in the United States to receive the robot ElliQ made by a US tech company. The company and other officials say it is a device using artificial intelligence (AI) to help older Americans from loneliness.
The device looks like a small table light and it has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and turns. It remembers each user’s interests and their talks, helping create a special experience with each new discussion. On a video screen that comes with it, it will show different cities and places of interest. The device leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and reminds users to take medicines and drink water. It can also support video calls and contact family, friends, or doctors in an emergency.
The company says none of the conversations are heard by them, with the information staying on each owner’s device. The average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times a day and more than 90 percent report lower levels of loneliness. They can be bought individually for a sum of money a year plus another sum of money to set it up. The company would not say how many ElliQs have been sent out so far, but the goal is to have more than 100,000 out within five years.
Brigham Young University professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad studies the effects of loneliness on health. She told The Associated Press that the difficult feeling of loneliness should push people to seek social interaction. Julianne noted that a device like ElliQ might have short-term helpful effects yet it could make people less likely to seek human contact.
28. What is the main purpose of the company in launching ElliQ?
A. To improve the senior’s life quality. B. To offer medical care to the elderly.
C. To ensure harmony in the community. D. To make the aged exposed to AI devices
29 What can we learn about the device from paragraph 3?
A. It resembles humans in appearance. B. It offers medical advice to the user.
C. It acts as a reminder in daily routine. D. It provides access to tourist attractions.
30. What does Julianne think of ElliQ?
A. It can be a substitute for human contact.
B. It turns out an economic and practical device.
C. It may keep the elderly from connecting socially.
D. It has lowered the level of older people’s loneliness.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Seniors In The US Are Struggling With Loneliness.
B. Robot ElliQ Is Helping Seniors Fight With Loneliness.
C. Robot ElliQ Has Taken Charge Of Elderly Women’s Life.
D. AI Leaves More Seniors Losing Touch With Their Friends.
A 29. C 30. C 31. B

Do you sometimes worry so much that it disturbs your everyday activities? Or do you feel so blue that it completely clouds your outlook? Do you often experience these or similar feelings together? You’re not the only one. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), the anxiety disorder is the top-ranked mental health problem among US adults, affecting 27.3 percent of the population each year. More similarly, the mood disorder or depression is the leading trigger of many mental issues.
Although clearly not identical emotional states and symptoms (症状), mental health research suggests that anxiety and depression often coexist. The incidence of developing depression in addition to an anxiety disorder or vice versa is high. The core of the double disorder is “a cycle”, says Sally R. Connolly, a clinical therapist (治疗专家) from Louisville, Kentucky. “When you get anxious, you tend to have this pervasive thinking about some worry or some problem and you feel bad about it. Then you feel like you’ve failed, and you move to depression.” Similarly, she adds, “People who are depressed often feel anxious and worried, so one can trigger the other.”
“They can be caused by various factors. Genetic factors contribute to 40 percent of the predisposition to depressive and anxious symptoms, with 60 percent being attributed to environmental, also referred to as social factors,” explains Connolly. Environmental factors include experiences like trauma or neglect in early childhood, and current stressors such as relationship difficulties, unemployment, social isolation, and physical illness. Chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), low back pain, are closely linked to psychological distress as well, notes Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.
No one has to suffer from anxiety disorder or depression, and certainly not both. People with such disorders should speak with a psychiatrist, a therapist, or other healthcare professionals about their symptoms as soon as possible. “It’s really crucial for people with both anxiety and depression to have a good assessment to rule out the bipolar (双相型障碍的) disorder,” she says. Effective treatment strategies have been available.
32. What does the underlined word “trigger” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Support. B. Target. C. Cause. D. Function.
33. What does paragraph 2 stress about anxiety and depression?
A. Their possible links. B. Their origins.
C. Their main symptoms. D. Their similarities.
34. How many causes of anxiety and depression are mentioned in the text?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
35. What will the text most probably talk about next?
A. More contributing factors. B. Harmful effects.
C. Some famous professionals. D. Specific therapies.
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

根据第一段“More similarly, the mood disorder or depression is the leading trigger of many mental issues. (更相似的是,情绪障碍或抑郁症是许多精神问题的主要trigger。)”结合前文提到焦虑症是美国成年人中排名第一的心理健康问题,可推测这里说抑郁症是许多精神问题的主要“原因”,所以trigger应表示“原因”的意思,与C选项Cause(原因)意思一致。故选C项。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Although clearly not identical emotional states and symptoms (症状), mental health research suggests that anxiety and depression often coexist. The incidence of developing depression in addition to an anxiety disorder or vice versa is high. The core of the double disorder is ‘a cycle’, says Sally R. 【34题详解】
根据第三段“‘They can be caused by various factors. Genetic factors contribute to 40 percent of the predisposition to depressive and anxious symptoms, with 60 percent being attributed to environmental, also referred to as social factors,’ explains Connolly. 【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍与抱怨者、逆向思维者等难相处个性之人的相处之道,如倾听、认同、引导等应对方法。
【36题详解】
由上文“What should we respond to a question from a rude person? And how about those other challenging personalities we have to talk to, whether we want to or not?(我们应该如何回应一个粗鲁的人的问题呢?对于那些我们不管愿不愿意都得与之交谈的其他具有挑战性个性的人又该怎么办呢?)”可知,这里提出了面对不同难相处个性的人该如何应对的问题,空格处应承接上文引出下文的具体方法,而D项Listen to experts about how to deal with them.(听听专家关于如何应对他们的建议。)
由上文“The complainers often transform their frustration about something deeper to express about minor upsets. These are the persons who think life is unfair to them.(抱怨者常常把他们对更深层次事情的沮丧情绪转化为对小烦恼的表达。这些人认为生活对他们不公平。)”可知,这里描述了抱怨者的特点,即内心有深层次沮丧且觉得生活不公。空格处应接着阐述与这类人相处的原则或方法,G项If you want to interact better with these people, it starts with sympathy.(如果你想更好地与这些人交流,那就从同情开始。) 符合此处语境,these people指代上文的抱怨者,提出与抱怨者更好交流要从同情出发,而下文“Get them to talk about what’s really bothering them. Challenge their negativity with questions about what’s good, fun and exciting in their lives.(让他们谈谈真正困扰他们的事情。用他们生活中美好、有趣和令人兴奋的事情来挑战他们的消极情绪。)”是对基于同情去与抱怨者交流的具体做法阐述,G项起到了承上启下的作用。故选G项。
【38题详解】
由小标题“The Contrarian (逆向思维者)”可知,这一段是关于逆向思维者的内容,再结合后文“The most effective way to handle a contrarian is to say you agree with them.(对付逆向思维者最有效的方法是说你同意他们的观点。)” This is someone who just likes to argue.(这是一个喜欢争论的人。)
由小标题“The Chatterbox”以及后文“Once the chatterbox has run out of things to say, their need to be heard has been met, and then it’s your turn.(一旦话匣子把要说的话说完了,他们被倾听的需求得到了满足,然后就轮到你了。)” Choose a topic and let them exhaust it.(选择一个话题,让他们把这个话题说完。)符合此处语境,let them exhaust it与后文Once the chatterbox has run out of things to say相呼应,都是让话痨把想说的话说完。故选B项。
由上文“Before you hurriedly show anger at the tech addicts’ rudeness, focus instead on building a better conversation than whatever is going down on the Internet. You might never be able to achieve this. You can ask them, ‘What’s on that thing that’s so attractive?’(在你匆忙对沉迷于科技产品的人的无礼表现出愤怒之前,专注于建立一个比互联网上正在发生的事情更好的对话。你可能永远无法做到这一点。你可以问他们,‘那东西上有什么这么吸引人?’)”可知,这里说的是面对沉迷科技产品的人时的做法,空格处应接着说问了这个问题之后可能出现的情况,F项Chances are that they’ll apologize and awkwardly put the device away.(很有可能他们会道歉,然后尴尬地把设备收起来。)

12-year-old Dylan lived with his grandmother. His parents were successful lawyers in the city. This made their daily routine very busy. But Dylan’s grandmother Erica came to their rescue and offered to take care of him.
Dylan loved living with his grandmother. Every morning, his grandmother would make him a healthy breakfast. After a bath, they would go for a walk in the neighborhood. She would hum (哼) a tune, and Dylan would join her singing. After a musical morning, Dylan would be accompanied to wait for the school bus. Every night the grandmother would sing for Dylan until he fell asleep.
It was naturally that Dylan was musically gifted. He wanted to perform at his school’s annual party this year. But his parents wanted him to focus on his studies. They wished that Dylan became a successful lawyer, too. He was slightly disheartened at how his parents dismissed his love for music.
However, having finished the school assignments, he also stuck to playing with his favourite music. He always shared a beat he created with his grandmother.
“Dylan, I’m amazed at how passionately you make music. And the best thing is that you put your individuality into your music. If you really love music, keep on it. Don’t let anyone stop you.” Hearing what his grandmother said, Dylan was greatly inspired.
From that day on, Dylan’s passion for music burned brighter than ever before. He spent countless hours honing (训练) his skills, experimenting with different sounds, and exploring various genres. With his grandmother’s unwavering support and encouragement, Dylan felt like he could conquer the world with music.
One evening, as Dylan sat in his room, playing his guitar, he came up with a melody (旋律) that conveyed his deepest emotions. It was a beautiful composition that intertwined happiness, sadness, and determination. Dylan knew that this was the perfect piece for him to perform at the school’s annual party.

With newfound confidence, Dylan approached his parents and shared his desire. He once again explained his love for music and conveyed his wish to showcase his musical talent at the school event. To convince them of his determination, Dylan even played the new music he created to them. To his surprise, his parents listened intently and exchanged a glance before speaking. “Dylan, we’ve realized that music means a lot to you. Your passion and dedication are evident. We want you to be happy and pursue your dreams.” Dylan’s heart was filled with joy as he heard his parents’ words of acceptance.
The day of the performance arrived. As Dylan stepped onto the stage, he glanced at his parents and his grandmother, who were beaming with pride. He knew that this was his moment to shine. With each play of his guitar and every word that flowed from his mouth, Dylan poured his heart into his performance. The audience was captivated by his soulful voice and the emotions he conveyed through music. Applause filled the air as he finished his performance. Tears welled up in Dylan’s eyes as he took a bow, feeling an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. He had not only proven himself to his parents but also to himself.

26. How does the author deal with the incomplete fossils?

D AI Leaves More Seniors Losing Touch With Their Friends.

Together with my friends, I decided IT should be a kind gesture to surprise the owners with a car wash. Every once in a while, someone would come by and ask us seemingly stupid men who told you to wash the cars, or even Better, who paid you to wash their cars. We explained we just wanted to do something kind. But our response was often met within even more confused look. As the afternoon went on, some other friends that came by understood our goal of the voluntary event and started helping out with some of the duties. I wasn't cleaning cars for money. I was cleaning cars simply because I wanted to offer the car owner's kindness. I now realized, first hand, that there is a special energy created when you choose to think bigger than yourself and act in service of others. And maybe like me, you'll find it's actually the greatest gift you'll ever get.
