Naturalist Enzo Suma, who is now 40, lives in Puglia, a region in southern Italy whose long coastline faces the Adriatic Sea. Floating waste accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the waste tends to be spread over a vast area. Feeling concerned about that, Suma makes it a habit to pick up the washed-up waste along the shore, especially after big winter storms.
One day, Suma was walking along the beach near his home when he discovered a bottle of Coke. Suma noticed on the bottle that the price, clearly printed on the bottom, was in lire, a currency (货币) that hadn’t been used in Italy since it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Could a plastic container have well survived in the Mediterranean, he wondered, for about two decades?
That led him to found the Archeoplastica museum. It has a collection of about 500 unique pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All collection demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment. “Seeing that a product people may have used 30, 40, or 50 years ago remains still unchanged, you’ll feel different. It’s a great shock,” Suma said to a reporter. So Suma often exhibits selected pieces from the Archeoplastica collection at local schools around his hometown of Ostuni.
“The playful side of the work allows you to arrive at the less beautiful side of things,” Suma acknowledged. “Plastic is a kind of useful substance. But it’s unthinkable that a water bottle, made from a material designed to last so long, can be used for just a few days—or even minutes—before becoming garbage. Clean the beaches. Clean the oceans. Recycle. But if we are still throwing out plastics, none of those are going to be long-term solutions.”
4. What’s Suma’s concern about his living place?
A. Its long coastline is disappearing. B. Big storms frequently hit the area.
C. Floating waste spreads over a vast area. D. The waste pollution on shore is worsening.
5. What can be learned about the objects in the Archeoplastica museum?
A. They have a history of more than half a century.
B. They were quite valuable before turning into waste.
C. They’re more like educational exhibits than garbage.
D. They have stronger life force than ordinary plastic products.
6. Which of the following can best describe Enzo Suma?
A. Creative, devoted and socially responsible. B. Enthusiastic, ambitious and adventurous.
C. Generous, cautious and humorous. D. Curious, efficient and playful.
7. What does Suma intend to tell us by his words in the last paragraph?
A. The birth of plastics has greatly served humans.
B. The key to tackling the plastic pollution is to stop littering.
C. The plastic problem can be solved by cleaning and recycling.
D. People should be more aware of the powerful functions of plastics.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据题干的“concern”可将答案定位到第一段“Feeling concerned about that...”,而前文提到“Floating waste accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the waste tends to be spread over a vast area(漂浮的废物聚集在地中海这个相对封闭的部分,不像开放的海洋,废物往往分布在一个广阔的区域)”,可知他担心的是不断恶化的漂浮垃圾的问题。
根据第三段对Archeoplastica博物馆的介绍,“It has a collection of about 500 unique pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All collection demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment.
故选A。
最后一段Suma对这个博物馆的作用意义进行评价,并再一次提醒人们塑料垃圾持久性的问题后,提到“But if we are still throwing out plastics, none of those are going to be long-term solutions (但如果我们还在扔塑料,这些都不是长久之计)”,由此可知,他认为根本解决之道是停止扔垃圾。故选B。
C
A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Or harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
8. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Words have a great effect on us. B. Encouraging words give us confidence.
C Negative words may let us down. D. Not sticks and stones but words will hurt us.
9. Why is there no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves?
A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves.
B. Talking to ourselves can have positive effect on us.
C. Talking to ourselves always gives us courage.
D. It does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone.
10. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. Make ourselves relaxed. B. Remind ourselves.
C. Praise ourselves. D. Give ourselves happiness.
11. What can we learn from the text?
A. Encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers.
B. Negative words may inspire us to make more progress.
C. It is better to think twice before talking to others.
D. People tend to remember friendly words.
A 9. B 10. C 11. C
根据第一段“A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. (俗话说:“棍棒和石头可以打断我的骨头,但言语永远伤害不了我。”然而,事实并非如此。语言的力量可以建立我们,也可以让我们崩溃。不管这些话是别人说的还是我们自己说的,积极和消极的影响都是一样持久的。)”可知,本段主要说明了言语对我们有很大的积极的或消极的影响。故选A项。
根据第二段中“In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. (事实上,我们真的不应该害怕,因为越来越多的专家认为大声自言自语是一种健康的习惯。)”和第三段中“This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. (这种“自我对话”可以帮助我们激励自己,记住事情,解决问题,让自己冷静下来。)”可知,当我们自言自语时,我们没有必要感到羞耻,因为这对我们有积极的影响,有益于我们的心理健康。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线句的上文“So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. (因此,为了保持积极,我们应该只对自己说鼓励的话。)”和下文“The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!” (下次当你完成一个项目,在考试中取得好成绩,或者终于打扫你的房间时,和我一起说“干得好!”)”可知,此处先提出自言自语的内容应该是鼓励的话,然后举例说明当自己做得好的时候,可以对自己说“干得好!”这样的话。由此推知,画线句应该是建议我们立即给自己一个表扬,即Praise ourselves“表扬自己”。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. (通常,话从我们嘴里说出来,我们没有考虑它们会有什么影响。但我们应该意识到,我们的话会引起别人的某些反应。)”、倒数第二段中“Words have power because of their lasting effect. (言语的力量在于它的持久效果。)”和最后一段中“Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. (言语具有力量:积极的和消极的。当我们积极地说话时,我们周围的人会受到鼓励。我们可以提供希望,建立自尊,激励他人做到最好。消极的话语摧毁了所有这些。)”可知,我们常常在说话时忘记言语的力量,但言语的确有或积极的,或消极的持久影响,深刻地影响他人。由此可知,和别人说话前我们最好三思而后行。故选C项。
D
A new study suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students’ ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.
After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.
They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn’t. Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students’ capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.
Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock. Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.
At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practice self-control. And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn’t see the same benefits.
The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students’ attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students’ ability to succeed.
12. What was the purpose of the study?
A. To examine the techniques for practicing mindfulness.
B. To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students.
C. To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests.
D. To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.
13. How was the study conducted?
A. By listing benefits of mindfulness education.
B By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions.
C. By teaching different students different mindfulness skills.
D. By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.
14. What change took place after the students practiced mindfulness work?
A. They felt easier to stay focused. B. They were better at computer coding.
C. Their mind was wandering more actively. D. Their brains were more aware of negativity.
15. Who are the most possible target readers of the passage?
A. Stressful parents. B. Mindful instructors.
C. Emotional students. D. School educators.
B 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits (哈佛大学教育政策研究中心的研究人员想知道,以学校为基础的正念训练是否能帮助更多的学生获得类似的好处)”可知,该研究探究的是以学校为基础的正念训练对学生是否有类似的好处,即群体正念训练对学生的效果。
根据第四段中“Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices (来自马萨诸塞州专注于正念教育非盈利机构Calmer Choice的教师每周四次教授小组技巧,并带领他们进行练习)”和“Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. (另一组六年级学生在这段时间学习计算机编程。)”可知,研究人员将参与者分成了两个小组,一个小组进行正念训练,另一个小组学习编程。因此,该研究是通过比较学习不同课程的两组学生来进行的。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. (他们的大脑中控制情绪的部分——杏仁体,对恐惧面孔的反应比他们在进行正念训练之前要少,这表明他们的大脑对负面刺激不那么敏感,换句话说,他们不太可能感到压力和注意力不集中。)”可知,在学生们进行正念练习后,他们更容易集中注意力,保持专注。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students’ ability to succeed. (研究人员认为,这对学校来说尤其有用,可以帮助那些遭受严重精神损伤和其他逆境的学生,这些逆境会引发身体压力,损害学生成功的能力。)”可知,该研究可以很好地指导学校去帮助遭遇精神损伤和其他逆境的学生。由此推知,文章最有可能的目标读者群体是学校的教育者。故选D项。

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何避免社交媒体中的嫉妒感。
【16题详解】
根据前句“Are you frequently depressed by the feeling that life is leaving you behind particularly when you look over social media sites and are faced with all the exciting things your friends are up to?(你是否经常感到生活离你而去,尤其是当你浏览社交媒体网站时,面对着朋友们正在做的所有令人兴奋的事情?)”及下一段“FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out refers to the perception that other people’s lives are superior to our own. It appears as a deep sense of envy, and constant exposure to it can have a weakening effect on our self-esteem(自尊).(FOMO指的是别人的生活比我们自己的生活更优越的看法。它表现为一种强烈的嫉妒感,持续暴露在这种情绪下会削弱我们的自尊。)”可知,空处为承上启下句,即强烈的嫉妒感是很多人都有的感觉,引出下文对FOMO的介绍。所以选择项A“If so, you are not alone.(如果是这样,你并不孤单。)” 故选A。
根据前句“While feelings of envy and lack of confidence seem to be human nature, social media seems to have added fuel to the fire. (嫉妒和缺乏自信似乎是人类的天性,而社交媒体似乎在火上浇油。)”和后文“Social media, with its built-in appeal, allows us to share only the best presentations of our life, while leaving out the more boring aspects. Although this could be characterized as dishonest, it is the atmosphere social media seems to demand. (社交媒体,以其固有的吸引力,让我们只分享我们生活中最好的一面,而忽略了更无聊的方面。虽然这可以被定性为不诚实,但这似乎是社交媒体所需要的氛围。)”可知,空处提问社交媒体为什么会有火上浇油的刺激作用,以引出下文对其原因的介绍。所以选择项D“Why does it have such a stimulating effect? (为什么它有这样的刺激作用?)”符合上下文语境。故选D。
【18题详解】
根据前句“Consider your own social media posts. (考虑一下你自己的社交媒体帖子。)”和后文“Well, so have others. And what they’ve left hidden is the fact that boredom, loneliness and unpleasant chores are an unavoidable part of everyone’s life, and you’re not the only one feeling left out. (其他人也是如此。而他们所隐藏的事实是,无聊、孤独和不愉快的家务是每个人生活中不可避免的一部分,你不是唯一一个被忽略的人。)”可知,呈现在社交媒体上一般都是经过选择过的,代表生活美好方面的。所以选择项G“Have you ever chosen photos that lead others to the rosiest conclusions about your life? (你有没有选择过一些照片,让别人对你的生活得出最美好的结论?)”符合上下文语境。故选G。
【19题详解】
空处为本段主题句,根据后文“You may not be a regular at fancy parties or a climber of dizzying peaks, but you have your health, a place to live and real friends who appreciate your presence in their lives. (你可能不是高档派对的常客,也不是攀登令人眼花缭乱的高峰的人,但你有健康的身体,有居住的地方,有真正的朋友,他们会欣赏你在他们生活中的存在。)”可知,本段主要介绍要学会欣赏积极的事物。所以选择项C“Learn to appreciate the positives. (学会欣赏积极的事物。)”符合上下文语境。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据前句“We are all flooded daily with photos of other people’s perfections, but really, what does it matter? (我们每天都被别人完美的照片淹没,但说真的,这有什么关系呢?)”可知,我们不能社交媒体上的完美照片的影响,因为它们不一定是真实的。所以选择项E“They are probably no more real than the funniest reality TV show. (它们可能并不比最有趣的电视真人秀更真实。)”符合上下文语境。故选E。

The teacher had just announced that she was going to give a small gift to the boy or girl who answered the most questions correctly in the tests they were going to have that day. What it was, she wouldn’t say, except that it was very nice, very pretty, and very tasty.
Of course that last word set everybody’s mouth watering.
“Something tasty!” said Tadao. “I could use that right now.”
“And so could I,” said Enrica, whose mother had been so busy that morning looking after her two little sisters and her baby brother that she had forgotten to make her lunch.
Then the tests began, and how everyone worked! When the teacher asked the questions aloud, hands flashed up all over the room and waved about like trees in a high wind. When the answers had to be written, there was an unusual silence. It was lots of fun, and everyone had high hopes of winning the prize.
As time went by, poor Enrica got hungrier and hungrier every minute, imagining what she would do with the prize if she won.
At last the tests were all over, the answers all checked, and the final grades all totaled up.
“Now,” said the teacher, “I’m ready to tell you the winner of the prize - Enrica, beating Renee by just one point.”
At this moment the teacher opened her desk and took out a big chocolate egg, tied with a piece of wide blue ribbon (丝带).
“How lovely!” cried everybody.
“Now just a moment,” said the teacher. “I have a second prize. It’s in this box.”
Everyone looked and saw four little chocolate eggs. They looked good, too, but not as attractive as the big one in the blue ribbon.
Enrica came forward to receive her prize. She had looked at both prizes and was thinking hard.
“Please,” she stammered (结结巴巴地说), “would-would you mind if I had the second prize instead?”

The teacher was so surprised that she hardly knew what to say
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The teacher was so surprised that she hardly knew what to say. She had thought that anyone would have been excited to take the beautiful gift she was offering. But, she thought, Enrica is always a good girl, and she must have a reason for her unusual request. So she gave her the second prize, and Renee was excited to get the first prize after all. Of course, every boy and girl in the class wanted to know why Enrica had done such a strange thing, but she didn’t say a word. Enrica just ran home with the second prize box for her sisters and brother. She didn’t even open it to take one bite on the way. When she got home and carefully unwrapped the box, four small, attractive chocolate eggs were revealed. The faces of her little sisters and baby brother lit up with pleasure as they saw the treats. If any of Enrica’s school friends had peeped inside her home that evening, they would have found four happiest children in the world sitting on the kitchen floor and enjoying the chocolate eggs. With a warm glow inside, Enrica realized that the real prize wasn’t the chocolate eggs themselves, but the happiness she had shared with her family.

D They have stronger life force than ordinary plastic products.

B. By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions.

“Please” she stammered (结结巴巴地说), “would-would you mind if I had the second prize instead?”
