B There are many changes that can happen in a person’s life. Some changes are very small and would not affect your life very much. However, other events could be very important and could change a person’s whole life. The important event that changed my life is coming to the United States to study. When I first arrived in this country, I realized that a great transformation (转变) would happen in my life both physically and mentally. After spending more than two months in the United States, I firmly believe that moving to the United States is a beneficial change for me. This change provides me with a chance to lead a healthy lifestyle as well as a new way of thinking that is important for me. It is necessary to have this change as it offers me a healthy lifestyle. Before coming to the United States, I used to stay up late at night to study and wake up early in the morning. This could cause me to get sick easily. When I decided to come to America, I made up my mind and determined to keep a healthy routine. For example, I enjoy the American-style meal which includes having a fresh salad instead of cooked vegetables. This method of cooking vegetables helps me absorb more vitamins from them. Additionally, this most important change enables me to think differently and internationally. This is my first time living in a North American country. Hence, I have a brand-new chance to experience a new culture. By knowing more about different cultures, I have become more considerate and have an understanding of various habits as well as behaviors from different races. Since I came here, I have changed my eating and sleeping habits to a good way. Thus, this change is very important and beneficial for me. 24. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage? A. There exist great changes during a person’s life. B. Small changes will bring great influence on society. C. What can we learn from the third paragraph? A. The author was becoming healthier and healthier. B. The author felt happier and more content. C. The author learned how to cook American meals. D. The author decided to live as the Americans do. 27. Which of the following impresses the author most? A. The American-style meal. B. A new way of living. C. Experiencing a new culture. D. Changing his behaviors. C People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though their lifespans can reach 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a large number of genes (基因) that stop tumors (肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species only carry one copy. According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” said the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass. This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s.Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist in the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.” 28. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They have a rather large body size. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing. 29. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass. C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage. 30. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. Larger animals have protection from TP53. B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes. C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones. D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have. 31. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. C. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people. D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes have been used to cure cancer patients. D A nonprofit group has identified over 1,500 books that local schools in America have banned from their libraries and classrooms in 2022 — 2023. The American Library Association (ALA) says there were more attempts to ban books from schools last year than ever before. Gay Ivey, professor of literacy and her research partner Peter Johnston have studied students’ motivations to read. They also have studied how students react to reading young adult literature. Ivey said reading books considered “disturbing” by students was beneficial for their learning and emotional development. And parents also noticed a growth in their children after they read the disturbing books. In one of Ivey and Johnston’s studies, they spent a year in a middle school. They asked eighth grade students in an English class to choose any book they wanted to read. The teens were not under any pressure from teachers to finish the book or to produce any schoolwork about the book. Many of the students chose to read books that deal with difficult subjects like depression. Some of the books students chose were ones that schools around the country have banned. Students are drawn to books that deal with troubling subjects. Instead of being harmed by such subjects, reading about fictional characters made them more empathetic (感同身受的). Ivey said they also were more thoughtful about the characters’ motivations and actions. The researchers found that reading made the students happier, and helped some heal from sadness or depression. The difficult nature of the books made the students more likely to discuss the subjects with teachers, parents and friends. Ivey said reading texts with difficult and troubling subject matter makes students more involved readers and learners. Students are able to relate to characters facing difficult decisions and think about how they would react to a situation described in the book. Reading disturbing books also made students more likely to learn as a group, the researchers said. With the troubling texts, sometimes it is “really necessary to grab everybody around you and put all heads around it and teach each other,” Ivey said. “More and different kinds of learning happens in those situations.” 32. What is the function of Paragraph 1? A. To call for confirming banned books. B. To encourage people to read. C. To make readers interested. D. To lead in the topic of the text. 33. What can we learn about Gray Ivey? A. She is engaged in youth literature creation. B. She researches students’ reaction to reading young adult books. C. She thinks that restricting teenage reading is meaningless. D. She suggests that students lack motivation to read disturbing books. 34. What is the main idea of Paragraph 6? A. Reading is profitable for adjusting mental health. B. Rendıng disturbing books has positive effects. C. To improve the reading ability of adolescent students is important. D. Reading can enhance communication and interaction with students. 35. What can we draw from the text? A. Reading is usually beneficial. B. The more you read, the more in the stomach empty. C. Reading without the use of the book is equal to wasting paper. D. Reading a good book is a conversation with a lot of good people. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 What are some ways to deal with noisy neighbors? Then how can you tackle noisy neighbors? You should be aware that not all neighbors are going to respond to your request. ____36____ If noisy neighbors don't change their behavior, the next step should be to write a letter, detailing the noise. ____37____ If noisy neighbors respond in such bad manners that you fear for your safety, your next step when noise occurs should be a call for the police. You might want to connect other neighbors who may also be bothered by the same noise. In fact, the problem is resolved when the noisy neighbors know you are going to call the police. Do be aware that you cannot always request noisy neighbors to be quiet. ____39____ And what you define as noisy neighbors may not really have bothering behavior. Carefully read specific apartments' HOA rules to see if your neighbor's noise is actually breaking rules. ____40____ If you have followed through with the steps and the letters, don't start banging things around in your home or turning up the music to annoy the neighbor. Simply report behavior to the appropriate authorities. If you do not, it will weaken your case and make it necessary for you to take the matter to a small court. A. There is one exception to this. B. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make $ 20 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $ 10?” The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior. ” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself. After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked. “No, daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. 【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species only carry one copy.(芝加哥大学的一个研究小组发现,大象携带大量阻止肿瘤生长的基因。 根据第四段中的““An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch . (该研究的作者文森特·林奇说:“患癌症风险的增加阻碍了许多动物向大体型进化。”)”可知,在大型动物的进化过程中,致命的肿瘤是一个风险。故选A项。 【30题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.(如果每个活细胞都有同样的癌变机会,那么像鲸鱼和大象这样寿命长的大型生物患癌症的风险应该比人类和老鼠更高。 根据最后一段““Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist in the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.(“大自然已经找到了预防癌症的方法,”犹他大学医学院的生物学家约书亚·施夫曼(Joshua Schiffman)说。“我们该去了解不同动物是如何应对这个问题的,从而利用这些策略来预防人类的癌症。”)”以及前文提到大象体内TP53基因的作用可知,人类有望通过对TP53基因的研究来预防癌症。故选B项。 D A nonprofit group has identified over 1,500 books that local schools in America have banned from their libraries and classrooms in 2022 — 2023. 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. B 35. Noisy neighbors are a common problem in a society where many people live closely together. Obviously, this issue can be the most significant when you share walls or a floor/ceiling with a neighbor. When the noise remains ongoing, you should definitely report it to local authorities. ____38____ Continue with calls for the police department when absolutely necessary. B. And some may respond in bad manners. C. Some people have lower tolerance for the noise. D. Start with landlords or the Homeowner's Association (HOA). E. Also, it is wise not to respond to noise in an angry way. F. The letter should state the dates when the quarrel happens. G. Here’s the $ 10 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled (皱巴巴的) bills. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The man, seeing that the boy already had so much money, started to get angry again. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After hearing what the boy said, the father felt so sorry for what he had said to his son. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: The man, seeing that the boy already had so much money started to get angry again. “How can you be so selfish? Why do you want more money since you have already had these bills?” The father could hardly hold his anger back and inquired with two eyebrows knitted into one. Holding back tears in his eyes, the little boy slowly and carefully counted out his money, and then looked up at his father, replying with big blue eyes shining with tears, “Because I didn’t have enough before, but now I do.” Wiping away his tears and with an innocent smile appearing on his face, the boy requested in a relieved voice, “Daddy, I have $ 20 now. Can I buy an hour from you? Please come home early tomorrow. I want to have dinner with you.” After hearing what the boy said, the father felt so sorry for what he had said to his son. With tears filling his eyes, he gave a deep hug to the son. In the past few years, he was always engaged in work and never spent a single weekend with his son. This $ 20 is just a short reminder to all of us working so hard for our living.
