Children’s Games in Ancient China
Unlike children nowadays, children during ancient times didn’t have smart phones, iPads, they came up with interesting games to play during their childhood. Let’s take a look.
Playing hide-and-seek
Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children. Even today, many children enjoy playing it. There are two ways to play. One way is covering a child’s eyes while other kids run around to tease him. 1
Flying kites
Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. Nowadays, the three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, and Weifang kite. Each of them has special features. 2
Kicking stone balls
During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm.
3
The closest thing to watching a film or television for entertainment during ancient times was going to see a shadow play. Folk artists manipulate puppets behind the screen, narrating stories and accompanied by music.
Setting off fireworks
Fireworks have a history of more than 2, 000 years. It is said that there was a beast named Nian in ancient China. 4 After gunpowder was invented, it gradually replaced the bamboo joints. Fireworks are still set off during the Chinese Spring Festival.

Do you have clothes in your wardrobe that you never wear? Do you keep things in your cupboards that you never use? Do you have books on your shelves that you never open? And what about the mess on the floor? 5 If the answer to these questions is yes, then you’re not alone. Most of us have too many things.
People with untidy, cluttered (凌乱的) rooms have untidy minds. 6 This makes them unhappy. There is no doubt that too many things are bad for us and we have to change.
Now, imagine this bedroom: a white floor, a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair. That’s all. It looks calm and relaxing. This is the minimalist style Minimalists believe that they don’t have to own a lot of things to be happy. 7
You are probably asking at this point “Do I have to throw away all my favorite things?” 8 A minimalist room is too extreme (极端) for most people, and personal things like photos and books are comforting and help us to feel at home. 9 Consider this simple rule: if you don’t use something for longer than 6 months, get rid of it. You have to regularly tidy and sort out all the things in your room. After regular decluttering (定期清理), you’ll have more space in your wardrobe and cupboards. No more “You must tidy your room!” from your parents! Your room will look more spacious (宽敞的) and you’ll feel free.
A.Of course the answer is that you don’t.
B.Actually, they enjoy their messy room.
C.They try to live with only necessary things.
D.But regular decluttering isn’t a bad idea.

It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! 25
You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. 26 Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner (内在的) speech. It can help us do better in different areas like school, sports and work.
When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. For example, using phrases like “You can do this!” can make a big difference. 27 Researchers put them into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. “Talking to yourself in the third person is like giving yourself advice,” said Jason Moser, a professor (教授) from a university. Moser uses himself in an example. 28 So when he is feeling nervous or afraid during a flight (航班), he talks to himself. “Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights.” This can help us to see things in a different way, especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
29 Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things—reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. They found that those who read out loud recalled the information the best. It’s because the information will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.

We all enjoy being part of a group—there’s no better work than teamwork, right? Actually, I disagree. Teamwork can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own, which is a much better fit for me. 50
To start with, personalities (个性) can make team work difficult. 51 The team often goes along with this person, whose ideas might not be the best, just the loudest. Just one difficult personality can make team work hard. With several challenging personality types working together, it’s even harder.
52 For example, I was once on a team where we never had as much time as we need to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together.
A final reason why teamwork is difficult is that there’s often no training on how to work on a team. 53 You need to build trust with your team members. Think of football players: They aren’t just given a ball and told to play. They practice and they train to play well together.
Team can be hard, but working alone has its challenges, too. When my computer doesn’t work, I don’t have an IT person to turn to. When I have a great idea, I don’t have anyone to share it with to see if it really is a great one. Don’t get me wrong—I still like my team of one and enjoy making all of the important decisions myself. But now I realize what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past. 54 So, one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.
A.Here are some ways to make teamwork easier.
B.There’s often someone on the team that puts personal needs first.
C.You need to stay alone as much as possible to reflect on yourself.
D.I also get to know how good teamwork could be if done correctly.
E.Not having enough time together can also make teamwork challenging.
F.You can’t just get together in a room and expect to work well with each other.
G.I began to think about why teamwork can make our jobs harder rather than easier.
50.根据“Actually, I disagree. Teamwork can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own, which is a much better fit for me.”
51.根据“The team often goes along with this person, whose ideas might not be the best, just the loudest.”
52.根据“For example, I was once on a team where we never had as much time as we need to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together.”
53.根据“A final reason why teamwork is difficult is that there’s often no training on how to work on a team.” 根据“You need to build trust with your team members. Think of football players: They aren’t just given a ball and told to play. They practice and they train to play well together.”
54.根据“But now I realize what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past.” 再结合下文“So, one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.”

After a 10-year project to count tuna (金枪鱼) and other large fish in the world’s oceans, scientists have made a very surprising discovery: these fish are almost gone. Because of too much fishing, almost 90 percent of the worldwide population of large fish—the ones we usually eat—has disappeared. 60 That will influence every animal in the ocean.
The need for fish is growing. Almost a billion people around the world get their protein (蛋白质) mostly from fish. 61 But what seems like a healthy choice for humans is causing a disaster (灾难) to our oceans. “People are consuming (消费) too much,” says Lance Morgan, a scientist at the Marine Conservation Biology Institute.
62 When fish like tuna disappear from the ecosystem, the ocean’s food chain breaks down. Animals such as sharks, which normally eat tuna, may die because they find no food.
The news may be scary, but taking action from now on can prevent harm that hasn’t happened yet. 63 The Monterey Bay Aquarium gives seafood choices to anyone hoping to keep healthy without destroying the environment.
“If you care about wildlife, first spend time and think about your own values and beliefs,” says Morgan. “ 64 ”
A.World organizations are ordering countries to stop fishing too much.
B.There will be more seafood on our dinner tables.
C.Then decide what you’re going to eat.
D.A dish of tuna in restaurants costs more than just one animal’s life.

E.Why do you keep so many things in your room?
F.Is it difficult to find things when you need them?

A.Self-talk also helps to improve memory.
B.Talking to yourself actually has a lot of benefits.
C.Improving memory is quite necessary for learning.
D.Talking to yourself helps to communicate with others.

46 If you’re mad, be mad. If you’re sad, be sad. This does not give you license to be rude and unpleasant to others. It just means that you need to recognize and accept your bad mood to be able to do something.
Tell others.
You can try to keep your bad mood a secret and put on your happy mask. But you’re fooling nobody. 47 Simply tell them, “Listen, I’m in a really bad mood today. I’m not sure why, but it has nothing to do with you. If I bite your head off, I apologize in advance.”
48
Spend a few moments to try thinking of at least one or two things that aren’t all bad. Something you look forward to, such as a person you like at work or something nice that happened recently.
Take some quiet time.
Take a walk in your lunch break. 49 Take a long bathroom break. Consider going home early or taking the day off.

Goenarto loves his work. Bird watching helps him stay healthy and he can make friends with other birdwatchers. 58 This helps more people learn about birds and take action to protect them. That’s the best part of the job!
59 They study and protect the rare birds. Terry Townshend is a British birdwatcher in China. He has studied Beijing swifts for over ten years. Xu Zhuo protects red-crowned cranes in Heilongjiang. Her father, aunt and grandparents also spent their lifetime looking after the birds. Now the young girl has the job.
