When people have different opinions or needs, conflicts may happen. Naomi Drew, the writer of The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts: How to Keep Cool, Stay Safe, and Get Along, gives kids some useful advice on getting on with friends.
Q1: A friend of mine often hangs out with our friends, but he has never invited me. What can I do?
A1: If a friend does something you don’t like, don’t be afraid to talk to him. Don’t be angry with him. Try to make him understand your feelings so that you can work.
Q2: My friend is rude to other people. She said if I didn’t act like her, she would stop being my friend.
A2: Never “sell out” just to follow one friend. Do what you believe is right, and you can even find some new friends.
Q3: My friend and I argue a lot. Although we’ll be friends again soon, I don’t like it. What should I do?
A3: “Winning an argument” isn’t always worth it. Next time when you argue, let your friend “win” if the thing is not important to you. If you give in a little, so may your friend. And remember, probably your friend isn’t wrong. He or she just sees things differently.
16. What’s the advice for Q1?
A. Have a talk. B. Find a friend. C. Hang out often. D. Understand others.
17. What do the underlined words “sell out” in A2 mean in Chinese?
A. 大动肝火 B. 有始无终 C. 有求必应 D. 背弃原则

On the first day of school, Socrates told his students. “Today, we’ll only learn one thing, that is to stretch out your arms, and then try to swing them backward.” He showed them and as a result all the students laughed. “Sir, is it also learned?” one of the students laughed.
“Of course! You think this is a simple thing, but it is difficult.” Socrates replied seriously. Hearing this, the students laughed even harder.
Without being a little angry, Socrates said, “In this class, I’ll teach you how to learn this action well. After that, start from today, you will do it 100 times a day.”
10 days later, Socrates asked, “Who still sticks to swinging his arms?” About 80% of the students raised their hands. 20 days later, Socrates asked, “Who still insists on swinging his arms? ” About 50% of them raised their hands. 3 months later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on that most simple action of swinging?” This time, only one student raised his hand. He was Plato.
Perseverance is the simplest yet most difficult thing in the world, because everyone can do it, but not everyone will do. Only the one who can hold on to a simple thing may make it!

Divide the work
For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn’t always do the same task. It’s good to try new things, even if they’re difficult!

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can’t win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure(失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations(祝贺)to the winners and share in their happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.
26. What can we learn from every failure according to the text?
A. A way of life. B. A valuable thing. C. A general rule. D. A secret of success.
27. In the writer’s eyes, why did Edison achieve success?
A. He got help from others. B. He happened to make it.
C. He avoided possible mistakes. D. He saw the bright side of losing.

A. Bad. B. Personal. C. Dangerous. D. Interesting.
29. What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition?
A. Express the regrets. B. Forget the failure.
C. Share in the winners’ enjoyment. D. Join in another competition.
30. What is the best title for the text?
A Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B. Experience in Dealing with Problems
C. Advice on How to Be a Good Loser D. Advantages of both Success and Failure

One Sunday morning, my husband and I went into a store. While paying, I heard the cashier say “How are you today?” as usual. I looked at her and said, “Not bad. And how are you doing?” Then I waited kindly for an answer.
She was a little surprised at first, but then she looked sad. “My grandfather is in hospital. He has a terrible illness. I know he is 91, but…” She started to cry.
“Don’t worry too much. He will be better soon,” I said.
“Thank you!” she replied.
Several weeks later, I went to the store again. I wanted to buy a birthday gift for my father. I saw the cashier again. I stood in her line. After the usual “How are you?”, I asked quietly, “I hope this is not a bad question, but how is your grandfather doing?”
She wondered at first why I asked such a question. Then she smiled and started telling me how brave he was. She was excited, and even after I finished paying, she kept talking, sharing her happiness with people around.

Do you do team projects at school? I do a lot. I enjoy team projects because I like sharing ideas with other people. Of course, team activities aren’t always easy. You need to know how to work well together. Here are some suggestions to make team work easier.
Know the goals
Make sure everyone understands the goal of the project. If you’re doing a class project, you need to check the teacher’s instructions carefully and ask questions whenever something isn’t clear. There’s a popular saying: If you don’t know where you’re going, you probably won’t get there.
Assign (指派) roles
Everyone should have a role in the team. For example, there should be a leader who helps everyone make decisions. There might be a note-taker who writes down the team’s ideas during meetings, and a time-keeper to control the time. There might also be a fact-checker or a group speaker.
Divide the work
For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn’t always do the same task. It’s good to try new things, even if they’re difficult!
Make a plan
After you divide the work, write down a plan on paper. You can use a calendar to help you. List all the tasks and think about when each one must be finished. It’s important for everyone to follow the plan. And if you can’t finish your part on time, tell the others as soon as possible.
Try to be positive (积极的). Everything is easier when you’re enjoying yourself in the team.
22. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By showing a saying. D. By sending a message.

A. Controlling the activity time. B. Writing down the team’s ideas.
C. Making speeches for the team. D. Helping the others make decisions.
24. What should you do after dividing the work?
A. Set a clear goal. B. Work out a plan.
C. Decide everyone’s role. D. Check the teacher’s examples.
25. What is the writer trying to do in the text?
A. Introduce the teacher’s instructions. B. Give information about smaller tasks.
C. Explain the method to do team projects. D. Describe the importance of creative ideas.

28. What does the underlined word “disgraceful” probably mean?
A. Bad. B. Personal. C. Dangerous. D. Interesting.
29. What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition?
A. Express the regrets. B. Forget the failure.
C. Share in the winners’ enjoyment. D. Join in another competition.
30. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B.

I was surprised at how something so small meant so much to her. Taking time to listen after we ask “How are you?” is such a small action, but it is helpful and important to others!
