Yu Chenrui, 29, is a fantastic maker of automata. On social media, Spooner, a famous British automata artist, applauded Yu as “a great practitioner”.
Interested in handcrafts as a boy, Yu first encountered automata at an exhibition in 2015 when he studied at the Communication University of China in Beijing. “It is like meeting a like-minded friend,” Yu says, recalling the moment.
When he graduated in 2016, Yu landed a job at an advertising agency near Shichahai, where he stayed for three years. Because, at that time, he was not sure whether he could make a living out of his hobby.
While working as a designer, Yu kept exploring and advancing his skills in wood carving and mechanics. Every day, when he walked along the Shichahai lake, he watched ducks swimming and diving. He envied, in a way, their freedom to do as they pleased.
Finally, though, despite the job’s good salary, it was not enough to compensate for not following his true passion. In 2018, Yu quitted his job and returned to Chengdu to open his automata workshop.
The studio he rents exceeds 200 square meters, and Yu has spent more than 300,000 yuan refurnishing it. Just after finishing the restoration, Yu didn’t know what to do and worried about cash flow. To keep himself occupied he planted blueberries, raspberries and cherries. He watered, weeded and added fertilizer every day.
Over time Yu’s reputation grew and his business flourished. With prices ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of yuan, his fantastic pieces of art have attracted collectors worldwide.
Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life. Woodcutter and Worm is originated from his own experience of finding a wormhole while cutting wood.
In an age of technology, automata is undoubtedly a marginal sector. Yu estimates that it has attracted no more than 10 full-time makers and practitioners across the country. “I hope it can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and makes them feel more connected and happier,” He says.
24. What is the correct developing order according to the passage?
a. Yu gardened to kill time.
b. Yu was into automata.
c. Yu resigned for his passion.
d. Yu’s business took off.
e. Yu redecorated his studio.
f. Yu worked for an advertising agency.
A. fcbeda B. fcbead
C. bfcead D. bfceda
25. What does the underlined word “marginal” (in last paragraph) probably mean?
A. non-mainstream B. commercial
C. man-made D. superior
26. What can we learn from the text?
A. Yu showed an interest in automata when he was a kid.
B. Yu’s works of art stem from his findings in the real life.
C. Ducks comforted Yu and became his like-minded friends.
D. Automata has gained popularity among those from all walks of life.
27. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Knowledge Starts with Practice
B. Good Mind Leads to Good Career
C. Popularity of Arts Comes from Life
D. The Pursuit of One’s Interest Counts
C
Looking back is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see what has led you here and, hopefully, how society has changed and improved.
Take, for instance, my career goal. First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.
I had grown up in a football-loving family. I remember the exact moment when I said “I’m sad I can’t be a footballer” while watching the game with Dad as a pre-teen. He asked why not. “Because I’m not a boy.” He immediately responded, “You can, if you want to.” “Yeah, I suppose so,” I sighed, “but no one watches women’s football.”
Looking back, I can see exactly why I felt like that. At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV. You see, you can’t be what you can’t see, and lack of representation leads, at best, to misunderstanding, and at worst, fear and negative opinions.
Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in — over 950,000 tickets have been sold so far. But, although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments — with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that’s because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.
Today, I’ll be cheering on the Lionesses, because it’ll mean talented, skillful female footballers being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe, a little girl believing that she can also be a Lioness one day.
28. Which of the following best describes the author’s career goals?
A. Realistic. B. Changeable.
C. Consistent. D. Long-sought.
29. Why didn’t the author believe she could be a footballer?
A. She was not talented enough.
B. People lost faith in women’s football.
C Girls were forbidden to play football.
D. She had no example to follow.
30. What can we know about women’s football from Paragraph 5?
A. It’s better paid than men’s. B. It is increasingly popular.
C. It has no market demand. D. It is not profitable.
31. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. Society advances with time. B. Women deserve equal rights.
C. Each goal is worth pursuing. D. Hard work always pays off.
D
A Chinese space mining company has designed a robot that can capture waste material left behind by spacecraft in outer space with a big net.
The state-run Xinhua news agency recently reported that the robot launched on the government's Long March 6 rocket along with several satellites. The robot will also investigate deep space to observe small objects in the universe. The 30-kilogram robot, called NEO-01, was developed by Origin Space. Founded in 2019 and based in the southern Chinese tech hub Shenzhen, Origin Space has been dedicated to exploring and using space resources, according to the company. The company says the robot will lead the way for future technologies capable of mining on asteroids (小行星).
The world's first asteroid mining company, Planetary Resources, was established in 2009. Since then, more than 12 businesses around the world have entered the industry, including 3D Systems of the United States and Japan's Astroscale. Astroscale's technology uses magnets (磁铁) to gather up space waste. But a report on the Origin Space website says NEO-01 will use a net to capture waste and then burn it. Thousands of satellites have been launched worldwide. As they are used for too long, many end up as waste and put other operating satellites at risk.
Su Meng is the founder of Origin Space. He said the company plans to launch many space telescopes and more spacecraft to begin the first for-profit mining of asteroids by 2045. Su added that NEO-01 will serve as a prototype (雏形) of future space mining robots, which can use rich mineral resources on asteroids to support the development of the space industry.
The Xinhua news agency reported that China was increasing efforts to land a spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid to collect materials. China is also speeding up a plan to build a defense system against near-Earth asteroids. The country aims to follow Russia and the United States in becoming a major space power by 2030.
32. What can we know about NEO-01?
A. It weighs 60 kilograms.
B. It was created by Planetary Resources.
C. It will be burnt after accomplishing its mission.
D. It is mainly used to catch space waste.
33. Why does China try to land a spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid?
A. To collect materials.
B. To build a defense system.
C. To catch up with Russia and America.
D. To support the development of the space industry.
34. It can be learned from the text that ________.
A. China will be the most powerful in space by 2030
B. Origin Space will open more mines on asteroids
C. it is those useless satellites that make space waste
D. the robot will look into deep space for more waste
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. NEO-01, a smart robot used in space.
B. A Chinese robot can catch space waste.
C. A new robot makes China a space power.
D. NEO-01, the pioneer of future space robots.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs... How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.

Worst of all, I had to leave all of my friends! For almost two years, I was mad about having to live there. Three years later I started to like the city.
Over time, Yu’s reputation grew and his business flourished. With prices ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of yuan, his fantastic pieces of art have attracted collectors worldwide.
Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom, a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life.
24. What is the correct developing order according to the passage?
a Yu gardened to kill time.
b. Yu was into automata.
c. Yu resigned for his passion.
d. Yu’s business took off.
e. Yu redecorated his studio.
f. Yu worked for an advertising agency.
A. fcbeda B. fcbead
C. bfcead D. bfceda
25. What does the underlined word “marginal” (in last paragraph) probably mean?
A. non-mainstream B. commercial
C. man-made D. superior
26. What can we learn from the text?
A. Yu showed an interest in automata when he was a kid.
B. Yu’s works of art stem from his findings in the real life.
C. Ducks comforted Yu and became his like-minded friends.
D. Automata has gained popularity among those from all walks of life.
27. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Knowledge Starts with Practice
B. Good Mind Leads to Good Career
C. Popularity of Arts Comes from Life
D. The Pursuit of One’s Interest Counts
C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第二段“It is like meeting a like-minded friend,” Yu says, recalling the moment.( “这就像遇到了一个志同道合的朋友,” 俞回忆起当时的情景说)”可知,俞先喜欢上机关人偶;再根据第三段“When he graduated in 2016, Yu landed a job at an advertising agency near Shichahai,( 2016年毕业后,俞在什刹海附近的一家广告公司找到了一份工作)”和第五段“In 2018, Yu quitted his job and returned to Chengdu to open his automata workshop.( 2018年,俞正声辞去了工作,回到成都开了他的机关人偶工作室)”可知,俞毕业后在一家广告公司工作,之后因为对人偶机关的热爱,辞掉了广告公司的工作;再根据第6段“and Yu has spent more than 300,000 yuan refurbishing it.( 花了俞30多万元翻新它)”可知,辞职重新开始机关人偶工作后,他重新装修了工作室;最后再根据第6段“To keep himself occupied he planted blueberries, raspberries and cherries. He watered, weeded and added fertilizer every day.( 为了让自己忙碌起来,他种植了蓝莓、覆盆子和樱桃。
故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom, a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life.
C. Girls were forbidden to play football.
B 29. D 30. B 31. A
从文章第二段中的“ First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.”
根据第四段中“At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV. ”(在学校里,有一条不成文的规定,曲棍球和无挡板篮球等运动是“女孩”运动,而橄榄球和足球则是男孩子的运动。我从没在电视上看过女子足球比赛。)及“You see, you can’t be what you can’t see, and lack of representation leads”(你知道的,你不能成为你看不到的东西,而且缺乏代表性的领导)据此可推知,作者认为她不能成为足球队员的原因在于她没有可以追随效仿的榜样。
根据第五段中“Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in ”(如今,the Lionesses将在世界杯上对阵苏格兰,并且全世界的人们都会收看。)及“But, although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments — with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that’s because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.”(不过,尽管女子足球是国际足联(FIFA)最好的投资项目之一,但大多数女子足球运动员的收入都低于合理水平。 B.“It is increasingly popular.”(它(女足运动)越来越受欢迎。)
结合全文首段中“how society has changed and improved.” 故选A。

China-Chic is the result of young people's renewed interest in Chinese culture and things that are guochao— brands and products ____58____ have a traditional Chinese flavor. The trend ____60____(gain) popularity over the past couple of years, ____61____(particular) among those in their late teens and early 20s.
Nostalgia(怀旧) is part of this trend, with products such as White Rabbit candy and Bee Flower haircare products ____62____(become) popular among the young, but newer products such as Perfect Diary and PeaceBird are now outselling foreign brands. Last year, domestic brands even increased ____63____(sale) by 2 percent.
Market researcher Elijah Whaley says, "Foreign brands used to have an advantage in the Chinese market by representing a Western lifestyle that ____64____(assume) to be superior. But Chinese consumers are now more confident in _____65_____(they) domestically crafted China style." The underlying message here: it's cool to be Chinese.

故填but。
故填a。
故填that或which。
故填to。
故填has gained。
空处修饰介词短语among those in their late teens and early 20s,需用副词形式。
故填was assumed。
故填their。

It’s great to hear from you. I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese history.
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty.

Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!” Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. In the woods, they worked hard to find a straight tree and set to work. After cutting the tree down, they took the bark (树皮) off with a knife. After an hour, a hand-made cane was finally made, which was smooth and was just of the right size. The two brothers were sure that their grandpa would love it!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. The moment grandpa took the cane with shaking hands, he cried with joy, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack shouted, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods!” Grandpa smiled at the boys and seized the cane in his right hand, trying to stand up. To their amazement, he did it! Everyone was excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed grandfather’s eyes were wet. What a wonderful gift he had ever got!
