After I finished my PhD in 2014 at Duke University, I stayed for an extra year to finish a paper and look for a postdoc (博士后) position. The first step of my process was to decide what I wanted to do with my career, and then I should find a laboratory that would help me to achieve that. I was a bit anxious about making such a strong statement about my career—a feeling that I think is shared by many graduating students.
The next step in my process was to broadly identify what type of field I wanted to work in and which techniques, system and organism I wanted to learn. Several people advised me to change one or two of these choices from my PhD work, which was in yeast cell biology (酵母细胞生物学). Although I really value having experience in multiple fields and techniques, I don’t think this change is absolutely necessary. I also talked my options through with my PhD adviser, Daniel Lew, and my lab mates. In the end, I decided to stay working with yeast but to take on more biochemistry approaches.
I then put together a list of possible labs as I read papers and university websites. By this point, my partner and I had decided that we would like to live in Europe, because it would be a great opportunity to move somewhere else and experience a different way of living. I preferred labs in Europe, but I included many in the United States as well.
I applied to eight labs by e mail: four labs in the United States and four in Europe. In the end, I decided on John Diffley’s lab at the Francis Crick Institute in London.
I could imagine how I would develop as a scientist in John’s lab and ultimately gain more independence. When you’re on an academic career track, that’s a big part of the experience becoming independent and designing your own projects.
24. What did the author do first for a postdoc position?
A. Work in a university for an extra year. B. Determine what to do with his career.
C. Look for a proper laboratory for research. D. Overcome his anxiety about his career.
25. Why did the author choose yeast cell biology for his postdoc position?
A. He thought it was popular.
B. He liked experiencing multiple fields.
C. He accepted his adviser’s and lab mates’ advice.
D. He considered it unnecessary to work in other fields.
26. What made the author prefer European laboratories?
A. Few suitable laboratories in the U. S. B. Focusing on research and pursuing his aim.
C. A better opportunity to finish his postdoc. D. Wishing for living a different lifestyle.
27. How will the author work in John’s lab?
A. By depending on John’s help. B. By designing his own projects.
C. By discussing yeast in groups. D. By sharing his good experience.

For young people with autism(自闭症),growing into adulthood can have its own challenges. But students at the non-profit educational program Exceptional Minds prove that autism can also mean special talents.
Madeline Petti is an example of how Exceptional Minds helps students with autism seek and reach their full potential. "I want the world to know that I like designing things and Exceptional Minds is a great place for me. ” Madeline is part of a new wave of digital effects artists. She is a young, talented student who has autism. She is learning all about the entertainment industry with Exceptional Minds, which provides vocational(职业的) training for young adults with autism.

If you don’t have the motivation to force yourself, you are pretty much going off into your personal La La Land. ”
Exceptional Minds provided the right kind of learning environment for Madeline. More action, less talking. She said, “I like coming here because it’s so hands-on. We get shown examples or we will follow along with the directions. I guess we are doing more. ”
Ernie Merlan is an EM program director. He said, “The heart of our program is a full time three-year vocational program specifically for the entertainment industry. The program teaches the students not only the technical skills they need but the work readiness skills they need in order to get a job. So we focus on how they look and what their attitude is, and then work place conflict which we all have. ”

To examine the links between mobility behaviors and well-being, a research team led by Sandrine Mailer, a Data Science Institute research fellow, examined questionnaire and GPS data from 2,319 psychology students from a university in the United States. At the beginning of the study, the researchers collected students’ reports of their general levels of loneliness and depression. Additionally, students used their smartphones to answer questions about their anxiety, stress, and energy four times a day over the course of the next two weeks.
One unique aspect of the study is that the GPS data were also collected during this time. The GPS data were transformed into several measures of mobility behaviors, which were divided into three broad types of mobility patterns: distance (behaviors related to the distance a person travelled), entropy (the distribution of time a person spent in different places), and routine (the regularity of a person’s mobility patterns).
“After linking these mobility patterns to participants’ well-being scores, we found that mobility was related to well-being on the daily level, as well as on the level of an aggregate(集合) across the study period,” Müller said. “This shows that mobility behavior is not only important for understanding how people feel on a particular day, but may also predict how they will feel over a longer time.”
Distance and entropy specifically related to time spent in social places were related to more positive well-being. Routine behaviors were related to depression and loneliness. Taken together, these findings show that individuals’ mobility behavior may indeed be useful in predicting their well-being.
“While it was not something our study was aiming to do, I think it definitely gives ideas for future studies on interventions(干预) and real-world applications,” Müller said. “There’s potential for learning individual patterns and showing that on the days when people go to certain places, they feel better. By giving them suggestions of trying certain things, we can try to make them feel better.”
32. Sandrine Müller got his findings mainly by ________.
A. doing experiments B. analyzing data C. making comparisons D. having interviews
33. What were the psychology students required to do in the study?
A. Keep away from smartphones. B. Report their moods every day.
C. Take psychological tests every day, D. Keep a record of their daily routine.
34. What are people with more routine behaviors likely to experience?
A. Greater challenges. B. Joyful moments. C. Negative feelings. D. Financial problems.
35. What may be the use of the discovery according to Sandrine Müller?
A. Curing people of bad habits. B. Creating healthcare applications.
C. Recording people’s exact positions. D. Promoting individual well-being.

But I was doing a television fitness show, and someone in the group had the bright idea that we should go to the rodeo (牛仔竞技表演) grounds and ask the trick rider if they could teach me a stunt (特技表演) to do on camera. We could use this short video as the new opening to the show. I agreed the stunt would be eye-catching and prove how flexible a fit person can be.
That was how I ended up at the rodeo grounds with a camera group, watching the remarkable performances of three talented young cowgirls. Once their show was over, we approached them, detailing our ideas for the television show.
The cowgirls asked me which particular stunt I was interested in learning. I especially liked one stunt — one of the girls led a horse to continuously and slowly run around the grounds while one of the other girls ran across the grounds toward a small trampoline (蹦床). It was timed perfectly so that she jumped onto the trampoline, up into the air, and then onto the horse’s back. As she landed on its back, she stood up and stretched her arms outward as the horse continued slowly running. It looked impressive.
They talked me through the necessary moves, stressing the timing since I would need to be in the air at the correct time when the horse ran past. I alone would judge the speed of the horse and my own speed to jump onto the horse on time.
It was clearly difficult. I was a little hesitant, afraid of being unable to do that well and slowing down the filming. But I knew the most important thing for me was to concentrate on the task at hand.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The first time out, I hit the horse’s back part and fell to the ground.

After leaving the laboratory, she began to think if she could invent a device that can translate Americans sign language into spoken English. She talked about it with her good friend Sarvnaz. Her friend showed great interest and the two girls got down to work. They signed up for an online eight-week machine learning course designed by Stanford University. They also turned to local university professors who directed them to more resources. The teens also reached out to people who use American sign language and asked them about their preferences. With great effort, they invented a device for deaf people to wear on their hands. Because of the device, in August 2020, the two girls won a competition and took home five thousand dollars.
B He liked experiencing multiple fields.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. D 27. B
【解析】

Madeline has played video games since the 4th grade. She has also always loved watching animated(动画的) shows. But she said she had a torturous time learning in traditional settings. “I get bored easily when I’m just sitting there and people are talking around me. I’m not really personally devoted to the material. When you are not personally devoted, you have to force yourself to stay in the moment and pay attention.
28. What can be known about Madeline Petti?
A. She suffers from game addiction. B. She has a talent for digital effects.
C. She is working in a local industry. D. She dislikes designing things now.
29. What does the underlined word "torturous" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Hard. B. Normal.
C. Long. D. Devoted.
30. How is Exceptional Minds different from traditional programs?
A. It is about entertainment. B. It focuses more on action.
C. It is designed for children. D. It is aimed at active talks.
31. Why are Ernie Merlan’s words mentioned?
A. To show the benefits of his job. B. To tell the program’s challenges.
C. To further introduce the program. D. To stress the influence of attitude.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. C
【解析】

【答案】32. B 33. B 34. C 35. D
【解析】

Dear Mary
I really appreciate the activity “Pre-class 3-minute English Speech”, which boosts our speaking skills and confidence. However, I’ve noticed some problems needing to be solved.
The students crazy about English are always seizing the opportunity to present themselves, leaving shy students no chance. So I suggest making some adjustments. First, students can take turns giving presentations to guarantee everyone an equal chance to express themselves. Moreover, you can require students to review each other’s speeches in groups, which will not only greatly reduces the error rate but also improves their writing skills.
I'd appreciate it if my advice could be considered.
Yours,

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Never in my wildest imagination did I picture myself standing on the back of a running horse. I’m not a cowgirl and don’t even ride horses for pleasure.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The first time out, I hit the horse’s back part and fell to the ground.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At 6: 00 pm, we completed the stunt filming, with my knee injured.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The first time out I hit the horse’s back part and fell to the ground. “I can do this”, repeating to myself to increase my confidence, I picked myself up and walked back to the starting point. After trying again and again I figured out the timing and could successfully land on the horse back. Then another challenge came, I needed to stand on the back of the horse with my arms stretched as the horse continued its run. Many attempts were made and finally I did it.
At 6. 00 pm, we completed the stunt filming, with my knee injured. I was so excited despite the pain. Though the doctor later reported I must stay in bed for a while because of my knee injury, I had no regrets. I’m not a trick rider, but belief in myself made me one. For me, it was like doing the impossible. And when the viewers watched it, I wanted them to understand that getting into good physical shape meant they could also do the impossible.
