Seahorses are small, thin fish. They’re called “seahorses” because they look a bit like horses. Although they’re fish, seahorses aren’t great swimmers. They often use their tail to hold onto something in the water. There are over 40 different kinds of seahorses. Many kinds of them are in danger.
On July 18,2023, Australian scientists released (释放) hundreds of baby White’s seahorses into the wild. White’s seahorses are mainly found near Sydney, Australia. In 2020, these seahorses were named the second most endangered kind of seahorse in the world. That’s partly because of pollution, and partly because many of the areas where they live, like seagrasses and coral reefs, have been lost.
To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant (怀孕的) male seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the aquarium (水族馆) at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS).
After the babies were born, the scientists kept them at the aquarium for five months, feeding the baby seahorses tiny shrimp (small shellfish) to help them grow strong. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, “They don’t have a stomach, so they have to eat continuously (连续地).”
About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” for them, The hotels looked a little like cages, and provided a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that could help provide food for the seahorses.
The scientists have released seahorses into the area five times, but this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released and about 90% of them survived. The researchers put tiny tags (标签) under the skin of many of the seahorses to help track (追踪) them in the future.
The scientists are hoping that the young seahorses will grow and reproduce in large numbers. Brett Fenton, who works for SIMS. says. “It is highly expected that we’ll see the animals do well over the next 12 months.”
30.What do we know about White’s seahorses?
A.They are facing dangers. B.They are good swimmers.

Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (AV,自动驾驶车辆) and face this terrible choice: The car must either turn left and hit an 8-year-old girl, or turn right and hit many walkers. On top of this “moral dilemma (道德困境)”, if the car doesn’t turn, you could be in danger. What decision would you want the car to make?
When AVs face dangerous situations, should they save people in the car first or walkers? Should they put the greater good above one person’s safety? These questions have been under discussion for years, but there is no perfect answer.
“A moral dilemma is a dilemma; it has no clear answer,” wrote Derek Leben, a professor at the Tepper School of Business, US, in his paper.
Iyad Radhwan, an MIT scientist studied these questions. He found out that people often think about their own safety first. “People buying these cars, they want cars that protect the passengers. But they want other people’s cars to protect walkers instead.”
AVs bring not only moral dilemmas but also problems with rules. If there is an accident, who should be responsible?
In July, 2024, a self-driving taxi by Baidu hit a walker in Wuhan, Hubei, who ran a red light. Baidu worked with the police and took the walker to the hospital. In another accident in Seattle, US. in April, 2024, it was decided that the “driver” should be responsible because he was on his phone while in the full self-driving mode (模式).
The situations of different accidents caused by AVs are so complex (复杂的) that “now there are no very clear laws about it”, said Ji Xuehong, a researcher from North China University of technology.
34.How does the writer introduce the topic of moral dilemmas faced by AVs?
A.By giving an example of a hard decision.
B.By explaining what moral dilemmas mean.
C.By describing how self-driving cars work.
D.By introducing the rules for self-driving cars.
35.What does Derek Leben think about the moral dilemma?
A.It won’t happen in real life. B.It is easy to make a choice.
C.There is no perfect answer. D.Drivers should protect themselves.
36.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.Real-life examples of AV accidents in China.
B.The best ways to deal with the moral dilemma.
C.Rules of driving AVs in big cities like Seattle.
D.Different situations of accidents caused by AVs.
37.What might be Ji Xuehong’s opinion in the last paragraph?
A.AVs are hard to drive. B.We need better laws for AVs.
C.AVs can cause a lot of trouble. D.There will be no need for drivers soon.

Brainstorming is the practice of coming up with ideas or solutions. 41 But we do have some rules to follow for successful brainstorming.
Focus on quantity over quality. When it comes to brainstorming, the more ideas, the better. Don’t worry about the quality of your ideas for now. 42 Remember that your goal is to come up with as many ideas as possible. Even if none of them are perfect, you’ll still have many creative ideas to use for your final plan.
Encourage big or unusual ideas. 43 Unusual ideas may not be immediately practical, but creating those ideas gives your brain training. It can also help to produce creative solutions that are hard to come up with.
44 Don’t say no to the ideas of others. You can put together the best parts of different ideas to create new, even better ones. Even if you’re not brainstorming as a group, you should still think about sharing your ideas with others and asking them for their advice.
You don’t have to regard yourself as a very creative person to come up with excellent ideas and solutions at once. Brainstorming can help unlock ideas. Even if you don’t find the perfect solution, just practicing it can help to improve your creativity. 45
A.Receive ideas from others.
B.Put these tips together and you are sure to come up with some great ideas.
C.There’s no correct way to brainstorm.
D.Just say or write any idea that comes to mind.
E.Don’t give up your ideas, no matter how strange they seem to be.

Long time ago, people hadn’t learned how to make fire, let alone cook food. People ate raw food and drank cold water. Everything they ate was raw, so people used to get sick and even die easily, and their life span was not long.
One day, the forest caught fire. After the fire was put out, people found beasts that were burnt by the fire. People found that the smell was good. They took a bite, and it was delicious, too. Hence, people learned that meat tastes better when cooked with fire. They also discovered that fire can bring light and drive away wild animals. With fire, the beasts wouldn’t dare to get near people.
On a mountain, there grew a kind of tree called Suimu. In the Suimu woods, there lived a kind of bird with a long and hard beak (喙). This kind of bird liked to peck the wood with its beak. It pecked and pecked, and sometimes it could peck out sparks (火花). One day a man walked through the woods and saw the sparks. He thought, “If birds can make sparks, can I do the same?” He found a piece of Suimu wood and a hard branch, and struck the wood with the branch just like the bird did. However, he couldn’t make any sparks no matter how hard he tried. But he didn’t give up. He found a piece of dry Suimu wood and put some hay on it. He kept drilling and drilling on the wood with a branch. Finally, the wood sparked and lit some hay and the wood.
Word spread quickly, and people gradually learned to make fire on their own and cook food with torches. The days of eating raw meat had finally ended. When the night comes, people all gather around the fire, and the wild animals dare not approach them easily.
The man who invented “drilling wood to make fire” was named Sul Ren Shi. People were very grateful to him and elected him as the leader of the tribe. Sui Ren Shi is regarded as the “ancestor of fire” by later generations, and his story has been spread throughout history and up to the present time.

B.The people they knew in their whole life.
C.The distance of the place that people can get to.
D.The time people at that time can live.
27.What does people find according to Paragraph 2?

B.The meat that cooked with fire tasted the best at the first bite .
C.The light that fire brought drove away wild animals.
D.The fire made the beasts hardly get near people.
28.What can we learn in Paragraph 3 and 4?
A.The bird had a hard beak although it’s short.
B.The man imitated (模仿) what the bird did to make fire.
C.The man successfully made fire in the first few attempts (尝试).
D.People made fire and gathered around the fire only at nights.
29.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.We should be good at imitating what animals do to make what we like.
B.Raw food can make people sick and even die easily.
C.Sui Ren Shi successfully made fire by drilling the wood and made benefits to human beings.
D.Sui Ren Shi is regarded as the “ancestor of fire” and has a good reputation in later generations.
B
