【原文】When I was eight years old, one day, my father took my brother and me on a picnic beside a river. When we arrived there, my father told us the river was very dangerous. He made us promise not to walk up to it. But I was too curious about it. I thought there must be kinds of fish in the river. So I did not keep my promise. I walked into the river and saw many fish. When I wanted to catch a fish, I fell down. Because the river was very deep, I could not stand or touch the bottom. I cried out loudly, but nobody was there, except my brother Danny. My father had gone to search for some wood. Danny was very scared. He didn’t know what he could do, because he was two years younger than me. He jumped in, but that just made the situation worse, because he was even shorter than me and he couldn’t swim. Both of us cried out. Fortunately, there was a farmer who passed by. He saved us before our father came back.

A
Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises. Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.
We don’t really know how old it is
It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently.
The Grand Canyon creates its own weather
Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool — no pun (双关语) intended. Sudden changes in elevation (海拔) have great effects on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you’re experiencing could change largely depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the area is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.
There are lots of fossils in the area
While the dinosaurs might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found that suggest other creatures often visited the area. They range from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.
Fish are relatively uncommon in the area
Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
21. What is the weather like in the Great Canyon?
A. It is pretty cool. B. It is extremely hot.
C. It is unusually cold. D. It changes from place to place.
22. Why are fish relatively unusual in the area?
A. It has a special geological phenomenon.
B. The temperature here is relatively stable.
C. It offers tough habitats for fish with extreme temperature.
D. There are eight fish species unique to the world.
23. Which section of a magazine is the text most likely from?
A. Geography. B. Life. C. Stories. D. Science.
【答案】21. D 22. C 23. A

In 2000, aged just 22, Tang Yulin realized his dream of becoming a third-generation forest ranger (护林员) in the reserve (保护区). In the initial years of his work, the reserve lacked electricity, and the rough mountain environment made patrols (巡逻) physically demanding. Rising at 3:30 am every day, Tang Yulin would prepare his meals in darkness before heading up the mountains at 4 am to observe and document the activities and habits of the golden snub-nosed monkeys before they awoke.
Spending nearly 200 days and nights in the mountains each year, Tang Yulin and his colleagues often had to build living places when unable to go back the same day. Through years of observation and learning, he became an expert on the reserve’s wildlife, serving as a valuable resource for researchers working in the area.
Following the development of infrastructure (基础设施) in the reserve in recent years, TangYulin’s patrols have become more manageable. The golden snub-nosed monkeys have also grown used to closer human interaction, with more than 140 research monkeys successfully relocated to lower-altitude areas near rivers, where they now boom.
Today, the reserve boasts the highest density of these monkeys in the country, making it a major location for observing them in the wild. Inspired by Tang Yulin’s devotion, his nephew Tang Xiaogang joined the ranks of forest rangers in 2024, becoming a fourth-generation guardian of the lush mountains and its monkeys.
“As the monkeys feast on leaves in the trees, and I snack on biscuits below, a bond of trust has formed between us. Seeing the golden snub-nosed monkeys increase here is the greatest honor for me,” Tang Yulin says, reflecting on his work.
In the misty mountains, Tang Yulin and his fellow guardians are pillars (支柱) of conservation, ensuring the balance between nature and humanity for future generations.
24. What did Tang Yulin dream of becoming when he was young?
A. A researcher. B. An expert.
C. An official. D. A guardian.
25. What is one of the problems Tang Yulin faced in the past?
A. Food shortage. B. Physical challenges.
C. The decline of Monkey number. D. Lack of company.
26. What makes him most proud of his job according to Tang Yulin?
A. Becoming an expert on the reserve’s environment.
B. Serving as a significant resource for researchers.
C. Witnessing the boom of the monkeys in the reserve.

The song of the Florida grasshopper sparrow is unusual and surprisingly insect-like. But it almost fell silent forever. In 2012, Joel Sartore, the founder of National Geographic Explorer and Photo Ark received a call from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service: The songbird, an important ecological link in Florida’s dry grassland, was on the edge of extinction. With only a few dozen males showing up in counts, it was among North America’s most endangered bird species.
Sartore flew to Florida to photograph the bird and work with conservationists to raise awareness of the species’ difficult situation. The story appeared in outlets, such as newspapers, magazines and even the Internet, helping boost government funding for a breeding program. Thanks to these steps, there are now as many as 180 adults in the wild and researchers are working hard to bring the species back from the brink of extinction.
Like other examples of species survival, the push to save the sparrow is “a remarkable story of belief and cooperation,” says Sartore. It also shows what it takes to protect an endangered species: research, narratives, partnerships, resources and time. This journey shows the society’s mission to illustrate and protect the wonder of the world. Over the past 136 years, we’ve developed a unique Explorer-led model, combining science, exploration, education, and storytelling to drive impact. We support Explorer in more than 140 countries, including Sartore and others whose work appears in this issue: biologist André Green II, photographer Lynsey Addario and education advocate Ara Kusuma.
Sartore has been creating an “ark” of animal photos for 17 years. Portraits of more than 15, 000 species invite audiences to connect and care. With the society’s support, the images have appeared on landmarks and U. S. postage stamps, prompting on—the—ground conservation efforts such as an initiative of National Geographic Explorer and Photo Ark.
As Sartore says, “The sounds of birds are the sounds of a healthy planet. When we save a bird or another species, we’re actually saving ourselves.”
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By clarifying a concept. B. By offering an example.
C. By giving an explanation. D. By quoting a remark.
29. Which has the similar meaning with “outlets” in paragraph 2?
A. Stores. B. Media. C. Exits. D. Books
30. What contributes to the sparrow’s survival?
A. A funding program from the government.
B. An ark of animal photos in the magazine.
C. A unique initiative for species protection.
D. A joint effort from different professionals.
31. What does Sartore want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. The urgency of species’ protection.
B. The promotion of cooperative methods.
C. The importance of coexistence.
D. The situation of human survival.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. D 31. C

If carbon dioxide (CO2) were a politician, it would be worried about its bad comments. This greenhouse gas is the primary pollutant responsible for global warming. Scientists, leaders, and activists are trying to stop its production. This gas, however, also plays a key role in life on Earth.
Carbon helps form the protein and DNA found in living things. In the atmosphere, it combines with two oxygen atoms (原子) to form carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis (光合作用) . In the process, plants use energy from the sun to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. In return, plants give off oxygen. As carbon dioxide concentrations increase in the atmosphere, scientists are trying to employ photosynthesis to promote plant growth. Laboratory studies show a higher concentration of the gas is making some plants grow more quickly in certain conditions, but in the wild and on outdoor farms the overall benefit is unclear. In the Netherlands, some commercial greenhouses are experimenting with ways to send carbon dioxide released from industry into greenhouses along a particular way where plants use the extra gas as fertilizer (肥料).
The first person to assume the existence of carbon dioxide was 16th-century Belgian scientist Jan Baptist van Helmont. After coal was burned, he noted, the weight of the remains was lower than the coal’s initial weight, which means some mass had been lost in the process. He was the first scientist to recognize different gases present in the air we breathe. It wasn’t until 1896 that Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius linked the carbon dioxide released from burning coal and oil to atmospheric warming.
Yet, despite its being plentiful in the atmosphere, we have been light on commercially produced carbon dioxide because of rising energy costs. As a result, carbonated drink (碳酸饮料) companies have had to raise prices or reduce production.
32. What can we infer about carbon dioxide from paragraph 2?
A. Saving energy. B. Supporting life.
C. Commercializing agriculture. D. Increasing fertilizer.
33. Why is Jan Baptist van Helmont mentioned?
A. To show the origins of CO2. B. To explain the applications of CO2.
C. To show an early discovery of CO2. D. To tell an unknown story.
34. What problem do carbonated drink companies face?
A. Commercial CO2 is in short supply. B. Sales of their drinks are extremely poor.
C. It’s difficult to increase their production. D. There’s too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Climate Change: Affected by CO2. B. Greenhouse Gas: an Enemy to Nature.
C. Carbon: Misunderstood Substance. D. CO2: Both an Enemy and Friend.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. D

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了树木多所带来的一些好处。
【36题详解】
根据本段内容“Planting trees near your home can reduce the need to run your air conditioner by 30% and lower your heating bill by 20% to 50%, says the U. S. Forest Service. Shade from trees keeps your house cooler, so you don’t have to run your air conditioner as much on hot summer days. Trees can also block winter winds that creep into your home through windows and doors.(美国林务局说,在你家附近种树可以减少30%的空调需求,减少20%到50%的取暖费。树荫让你的房子更凉爽,所以你不必在炎热的夏天开那么多空调。树木还可以阻挡冬天的风从窗户和门爬进你的家)”可知,第一段主要讲夏天因为树荫室内凉爽少开空调,冬天因为树可挡风,室内少风也可少开空调,所以就节约钱。故B选项“树木可以降低你的电费”符合语境,故选B。
【37题详解】
根据标题“Trees can improve your mental health.(树木可以改善你的心理健康)”以及后文“The solution for the city blues?(如何解决城市忧郁?)”可知,本段讲树能够增进精神健康,城里的人压力更大,解决的方案就是多种树。故F选项“研究发现生活在城市里的人压力更大”符合语境,故选F。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Neighborhoods with a high tree density rate report 25% lower childhood asthma rates, Lambe says. “Trees filter air pollution particles out of the air we breathe, so they give us cleaner air.”(兰贝说,树木密度高的社区儿童哮喘发病率要低25%。“树木过滤了我们呼吸的空气中的空气污染颗粒,所以它们给了我们更清洁的空气。”)”可知,上文提到树可以增进身体健康,G选项中asthma对应上文asthma。故G选项“一项研究发现树木在一年内防止850人死于哮喘”符合语境,故选G。
【39题详解】
根据上文““Trees provide shade, and they cool cities as much as 10°F,” Lambe says.(兰贝说:“树木提供阴凉,使城市降温10华氏度。”)”可知,上文讲树荫会使城市凉爽,这样就会减少因热导致的人口死亡。故C选项“这可以防止与热有关的死亡”符合语境,故选C。
【40题详解】
根据上文“And get this: a Baltimore study found that crime decreased in neighborhoods where there were more trees. One might conclude that people obeyed the law better because wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more trees. The study controlled for that consideration and adjusted their models for a range of socioeconomic factors.(巴尔的摩的一项研究发现,树木越多的社区,犯罪率就越低。有人可能会得出这样的结论:人们更遵守法律,因为富裕的社区往往有更多的树木。该研究控制了这一因素,并根据一系列社会经济因素调整了他们的模型)”可知,上文提到树多的社区犯罪率就低。故E选项“树木仍然是犯罪斗士”符合语境,故选E。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One morning on my way to school, noticed an elderly woman dressed in a yellow vest (马 甲)carrying a garbage bag and one of those rubbish claws (爪形器具)."What's that lady doing?" I asked mum. "Vest Lady. She just picks up rubbish around here for fun," mum said. "Why would someone think picking up rubbish looking like a construction worker is fun?" I puzzled.
For several years I'd witness this mysterious Vest Lady—rain or shine — on my way to school. I had thought she was crazy for picking up rubbish. Eventually I smiled and waved at her each time I saw her. Later, I moved to high school. The time I saw rubbish here and there I felt really annoyed. Then I'd think, "Why isn't anyone picking up this rubbish? People are so inconsiderate I" However, shortly after, I realized picking up the rubbish was not someone ease's problem.
Now I couldn't walk past litter without feeling guilty. I volunteered to clean up rubbish around our school. Strange as it might sound, picking up litter was kind of a thrill for me! In fact, I was so determined that for my 17th birthday I bought myself a rubbish claw, reusable gloves and a reflective safety yellow vest with my own name on it.
During my first attempt in my stylish equipment, met with unfriendly looks from others as if I were a criminal doing community service. One day,I had an epiphany(顿悟):"I'm acting just like Vest Lady!"
But there was too much rubbish around, cigarette ends littered about, cans rolling on the street, pieces of paper hidden in the grass and plastic. alone was too weak J How would I get more volunteers involved in rubbish removal? A smart idea flashed into my mind.

Soon I created my website go picking up com.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
More and more people on vests with their own names.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Soon I created my website go. picking up. com. On the website I launched a rubbish removal campaign. I described my purpose-calling on volunteers to pick up rubbish. I posted pictures of rubbish littered about on the website, which could not only illustrate the severe situation but also show that a large number of volunteers were in great need. Besides, I shared the story of Vest Lady who influenced me so much. Surprisingly, my website gradually became a big hit on the internet.
More and more people put on vests with their own names. Volunteers could be seen picking up rubbish in their spare time. The yellow vests made beautiful scenery in the park or on the street. With our joint efforts, the environment became better and better. What delighted me most was that people's awareness of environmental protection was improved. The rubbish removal campaign was a big success. Thanks to Vest Lady who rooted the sense of environmental protection in my mind, more people became Vest Lady.

第二部分 阅读(共两节, 满分50分)
第一节:(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises.

“As the monkeys feast on leaves in the trees and I snack on biscuits below, a bond of trust has formed between us.

A. Becoming an expert on the reserve’s environment.
B. Serving as a significant resource for researchers.
C. Witnessing the boom of the monkeys in the reserve.
D. Inspiring his nephew to join the ranks of forest rangers.
27. Which word best describes Tang Yulin?
A. Romantic. B. Shy.
C. Devoted. D. Generous.

Portraits of more than 15 000 species invite audiences to connect and care.

Planting trees near your home can reduce the need to run your air conditioner by 30% and lower your heating bill by 20% to 50%, says the U. S. Forest Service. Shade from trees keeps your house cooler, so you don’t have to run your air conditioner as much on hot summer days. Trees can also block winter winds that creep into your home through windows and doors.
Trees can improve your mental health.
A study from The Nature Conservancy found that time in nature around trees correlated with a drop in anxiety and depression. ___37___ The solution for the city blues? Nature, specifically trees. Just looking at trees lowers blood pressure and muscle tension within five minutes, according to a Texas A&M study.
Trees increase health.
Neighborhoods with a high tree density (密度) rate report 25% lower childhood asthma (哮喘) rates, Lambe says. “Trees filter air pollution particles (颗粒) out of the air we breathe, so they give us cleaner air.” ___38___
Trees make city areas cooler and safer.
“Trees provide shade, and they cool cities as much as 10°F,” Lambe says. “___39___” And get this: a Baltimore study found that crime decreased in neighborhoods where there were more trees. One might conclude that people obeyed the law better because wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more trees. The study controlled for that consideration and adjusted their models for a range of socioeconomic factors. ___40___

Strange as it might sound picking up litter was kind of a thrill for me!
