Eight hours shovelling snow in -20℃ might not sound like the ideal day out, but a committed team of volunteers in Finland are working dawn to dusk building enormous snow drifts (雪堆) for one of the world’s most endangered seals.
The Saimaa ringed seal was once common around Lake Saimaa in the south-east of Finland, but now only 495 of them remain. In the late 1980s the population of the seals decreased to its lowest point, with fewer than 200 left, driven by hunting and deaths caused by fish traps. Accidental deaths in fishing nets remain a challenge. Now, the seals are fully protected but the threat of the climate emergency is worrying. The seals make “snow caves” inside snow drifts where they raise their young and protect them from the elements and predators such as red foxes, but as the climate warms, the snow is disappearing.
To save these rare seals, 300 volunteers spend days shovelling snow into piles 7m long and 1.5m high around the edge of the frozen lake. “It’s kind of a snow cave,” says Vincent Biard, a PhD student and volunteer from the University of Eastern Finland. “The seals come from under and dig into the snow drifts to create a cave where they can give birth and raise their young.” They get around on foot or skis, dragging their equipment with them over a distance of 10km. Biard describes the day as “kind of fun”, and adds, “you actually have an impact, which is nice. If we don’t do it, then they would just go extinct quite quickly.”
More than 300 pups have been born in artificial snowdrifts since they started making them in 2014. “We are on a rising growth curve, so things still look pretty nice,” says Jari Ilmonen, coordinator of Our Saimaa Seal Life, which is an EU-funded programme. “We are doing what we can, so we have to have hope and positive thoughts.” Human-made snow drifts are larger and “more durable than natural snow drifts”, says Ilmonen. “By the first half of February most of the natural ones had melted away, but the manmade ones stood strong.”
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The two functions of snow drifts. B. The threats to the Saimaa ringed seals.
C. The big concern about global warming. D. The full recovery of the seals’ population.
5. Which of the following can best describe the work of the volunteers?
A. Effective but boring. B. Valuable but impractical.
C. Demanding but fulfilling. D. Dangerous but enjoyable.
6. What does Ilmonen say about manmade snow drifts?
A. They can help all marine life survive winters.
B. They are more comfortable than natural ones.
C. They will not melt until the end of the spring.
D. They have seen progress in protecting the seals.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To celebrate an effort to protect wildlife. B. To introduce one of endangered animals.
C. To explain benefits of artificial snowdrifts. D. To raise the awareness of the climate crisis.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A

由文章第二段中“The Saimaa ringed seal was once common around Lake Saimaa in the south-east of Finland, but now only 495 of them remain.
由文章第三段中“To save these rare seals, 300 volunteers spend days shovelling snow into piles 7m long and 1.5m high around the edge of the frozen lake. (为了拯救这些珍稀的海豹,300名志愿者连续数天在结冰的湖泊边缘堆砌起7米长、1.5米高的雪堆。)”以及“Biard describes the day as “kind of fun”, and adds, “you actually have an impact, which is nice. If we don’t do it, then they would just go extinct quite quickly. (比亚尔形容这样的日子“还算有趣”,并补充道:“你能产生影响,这很好。如果我们不这么做,它们很快就会灭绝。)”可知,志愿者们的工作是要求很高但很有成就感。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中““We are on a rising growth curve, so things still look pretty nice,” says Jari Ilmonen, coordinator of Our Saimaa Seal Life, which is an EU-funded programme. “We are doing what we can, so we have to have hope and positive thoughts.” Human-made snow drifts are larger and “more durable than natural snow drifts”, says Ilmonen. “By the first half of February most of the natural ones had melted away, but the manmade ones stood strong.”
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“Eight hours shovelling snow in -20℃ might not sound like the ideal day out, but a committed team of volunteers in Finland are working dawn to dusk building enormous snow drifts (雪堆) for one of the world’s most endangered seals. (在零下20度的环境中连续铲雪八小时听起来或许并不是外出度假的理想选择,但在芬兰,一支热心的志愿者团队从黎明到黄昏不辞辛劳地堆砌着巨大的雪堆,这一切都是为了保护世界上最为濒危的海豹之一。)”可知,以及文章最后一段中“More than 300 pups have been born in artificial snowdrifts since they started making them in 2014. 故选A。

Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It’s usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs?
For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neuroscientist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. , has studied the role of people’s beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong.
A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that?
To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter at Ball State University conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test.
Students who didn’t see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought.
Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s important to remember that questioning beliefs isn’t always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.”
8. Why does the author mention the explosion of the Challenger?
A. To express his sorrow for the loss.
B. To stress the high risk of space flights.
C. To show the result of wrong operation.
D. To give an example of overconfidence.
9. What do we know about intellectual humility according to Porter’s research?
A. It urged students to gain recognition.
B. It encouraged students to take exams.
C. It helped students to adjust learning methods.
D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge.
10. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Fully mastered a subject. B. Put great effort into a subject
C. Really enjoyed a subject. D. Benefited a lot from a subject.
11. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A. Why questioning our belief is hard.
B. Why intellectual humility is helpful.
C. How to become a confident person.
D. How to practice intellectual humility.
D 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第二段第二至第四句“He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger.
根据第四段第二、三句“She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test. (她发现,智力谦逊的学生更有可能去检验自己是否真正理解了学习材料,并寻找自己理解上的漏洞。当他们看到考试成绩时,他们会调整学习策略,以提高学习表现,并掌握好材料为下一次考试做准备)”可知,智力谦逊这种特质会使学生及时反思自己的学习,相应调整学习方法。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段第二句“Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought. (这些学生以为自己对某个科目got down pat,但在考试中被要求解释时,他们发现自己的理解并没有自己想象的那么多)”可知,学生们在考试之前应是对自己比较自信,认为自己对该相关知识十分了解,或已经全会了,但到考场答题时,才发现自己会的不如原本所认为的那么多。由此可知,got a subject down pat应是“对某科目了解很多”或“对某科目完全掌握”之意。故选A项。
根据第二段最后一句“The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong. (好消息是,过度自信有一种“疫苗”,科学家称之为“智力谦逊”——即认识到你的信念可能是错误的)”及全文最后一句“If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.” (如果你觉得很难质疑一种信念,可以尝试迈出“一小步”)”可知,最后一句中所说的“question a belief”即前文所说的“recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong”,也就是第二段最后一句引号中所言的“智力谦逊”。全文最后一句又说,“可以尝试迈出‘一小步’”。由此推知,所谓的“一小步”究竟该怎么做,会在下文进行介绍,即如何练习做到“智力谦虚”。故选D项。
D
The brain is protected by shock-absorbing fluid and, outside that, the skull. In a concussion (脑震荡), the brain bounces around in the skull, accelerating, decelerating or revolving. This creates a series of impacts. The neurons (神经元) in the brain are disturbed, and between those neurons, the axons - thin fibers that transmit electrical impulses–stretch or break. Inside the brain, it’s like an earthquake that has happened. Everything is still standing, but there are cracks in the roads and in building foundations.
This extremely small damage has big consequences. But decades ago, the public had a “walk it off” attitude towards concussions. That’s changed, thanks in part to an increased awareness about the long-term effects. The 2015 film “Concussion” tells the true story of Dr Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist studying chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder caused by repeated head injuries.
Until recently, the dark-room treatment was the standard prescribed by most doctors, involving patients resting in darkness and without any mental stimulation, until their symptoms eased off. This suggestion came out of studies in the 1990s and early 2000s that found when athletes with concussions continued with high levels of activity, they recovered more slowly than those who rested.
But people who spend more time in a dark room-sometimes called “cocooning”-are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression and sleep problems. Their bodies get weaker due to underuse, as well.
“Science and research have evolved over the past decade, showing that when you stop doing activity altogether, that actually affects your recovery process,” says Babul, a sports-injury specialist. The active-rest approach to concussion recovery promotes a slow increase in activity, starting with a day or two of light daily movement, and gradually adding activity, building to a full return to normal, unrestricted activity.
“People who follow the right guidance and management tend to recover uneventfully, and those who don’t and continue to do their activities continue to tax their brain and are likely to have long-term, persisting symptoms,” Babul says. “The key is to recognize it immediately and know what to do.”
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The workings of concussion. B. The causes of concussion.
C. The symptoms of concussion. D. The effects of concussion.
13. What leads to people’s weaker bodies in the dark-room treatment?
A. The dark environment. B. Their physical pain.
C. Their insufficient activity. D. Their mental disorder.
14. Which practice is advised to help with concussion, according to the passage?
A. Setting a progressive fitness plan first. B. Doing heavy housework daily.
C. Playing competitive sports regularly. D. Lying in bed for the whole day.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. From Inaction to Action: Concussion Shocks. B. From Darkness to Light: Concussion Recovery.
C. From Outside to Inside: Concussion Treatment. D. From Nothing to Something: Concussion Study.
A 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第一段“The brain is protected by shock-absorbing fluid and, outside that, the skull. Everything is still standing, but there are cracks in the roads and in building foundations.(大脑是由吸震液保护的,在吸震液之外,还有头骨。在脑震荡中,大脑在头骨中反弹,加速,减速或旋转。这产生了一系列的影响。大脑中的神经元受到干扰,在这些神经元之间,轴突——传输电脉冲的细纤维——伸展或断裂。在大脑内部,就像发生了一场地震。一切都还在,但道路和建筑地基上有裂缝。)”可知,第一段的主要讲的是脑震荡的机制,包括脑部在颅骨内的运动及其对神经元的影响。故选A项。
根据第四段“But people who spend more time in a dark room-sometimes called “cocooning”-are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression and sleep problems. Their bodies get weaker due to underuse, as well.( 但是,在黑暗的房间里呆得时间越长(有时被称为“茧”)的人也越容易出现焦虑、抑郁和睡眠问题。他们的身体也会因为未充分利用而变得更加虚弱。)”可知,活动不足导致人们在暗室治疗中身体变弱。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The active-rest approach to concussion recovery promotes a slow increase in activity, starting with a day or two of light daily movement, and gradually adding activity, building to a full return to normal, unrestricted activity.(脑震荡恢复的积极-休息方法促进活动的缓慢增加,从一天或两天的轻微运动开始,逐渐增加活动,直到完全恢复正常,不受限制的活动。)” 故选A项。
根据文章大意以及最后一段““People who follow the right guidance and management tend to recover uneventfully, and those who don’t and continue to do their activities continue to tax their brain and are likely to have long-term, persisting symptoms,” Babul says. “The key is to recognize it immediately and know what to do.”(Babul说:“遵循正确指导和管理的人往往会平静地康复,而那些不遵循正确指导和管理的人则会继续进行活动,继续给大脑带来负担,并可能出现长期持续的症状。”“关键是要立即意识到这一点,并知道该怎么做。”)”可知,文章主要讲的是脑震荡的研究和治疗方法的探讨,即从传统的黑暗治疗方法转向更积极的恢复策略。故这篇文章最好的标题是“从黑暗到光明:脑震荡的康复”。故选B项。
第二节:阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题,计12.5分)
You have to make a speech. You have done your research and now have plenty of ideas bouncing around in your head that you want to get across. The big question you face at this point is how to organize those thoughts. ___16___ You need to brainstorm some supporting ideas and then figure out how those ideas fit together.
These are just two cases that many people deal with frequently. Some use outlining to flesh out and organize their ideas, but is that the best strategy? ___17___
___18___ This two-dimensional structure is designed to help you remember information because its format is easy for your mind to remember. More than 250 million people worldwide use them, so why don’t you have a try and see what they are all about?
What is a mind map? Simply put, it is one’s ideas put into the form of a visual diagram that starts with a central idea. Put this idea in a bubble in the middle of a page with lines radiating out to other bubbles that contain related themes or concepts. ___19___ Use words, short phrases or images to express your ideas. And use color-coded bubbles for a visual representation of each branch’s connection.
Studies have shown that this technique of using pictures, colors and visual arrangement has improved people’s recall and memory of information by 10 to 15 percent. ___20___ Creativity is aroused because of the spatial arrangement, enabling people to make more links and associations on topics of any kind. Additionally, it increases one’s productivity because mind mapping makes it easier to learn faster.
So whether you’re in charge of a project or writing a research paper, make this technique a core part of your planning process!
A. But it doesn’t stop there.
B. It should look like a many-legged spider.
C. This is a common problem that many people face.
D. It has proven to increase not only productivity and creativity but also memory.
E. Or perhaps you are planning to write a paper, and all you have is the main topic.
F. If everyone thought in a linear manner, then the answer would be yes, but most people don’t.
G. Enter mind mapping, a technique that shows how different ideas and facts relate to one another.
E 17. F 18. G 19. B 20. A
由上文“The big question you face at this point is how to organize those thoughts. (此时你面临的大问题是如何组织这些想法。)”可知,这里强调面临如何组织想法的问题,而E项“Or perhaps you are planning to write a paper, and all you have is the main topic. (或者也许你正计划写一篇论文,而你所拥有的只是主题。) ”进一步列举了另一种类似的情况,即写论文时只有主题,同样面临组织想法的问题,与上文形成并列,有补充说明的作用。故选E项。
【17题详解】
由上文“Some use outlining to flesh out and organize their ideas, but is that the best strategy? (有些人用大纲来充实和组织他们的想法,但这是最好的策略吗?)”可知,这里提出大纲是否是最佳策略的疑问,而F项“If everyone thought in a linear manner, then the answer would be yes, but most people don’t. (如果每个人都以线性方式思考,那么答案会是肯定的,但大多数人不是。) ”对上文提出的问题进行了回应,解释了大纲并非对所有人来说都是最佳策略的原因,与上文的疑问相呼应。故选F项。
【18题详解】
由下文“This two-dimensional structure is designed to help you remember information because its format is easy for your mind to remember. More than 250 million people worldwide use them, so why don’t you have a try and see what they are all about? (这种二维结构旨在帮助你记住信息,因为它的格式很容易被你的大脑记住。全球有超过2.5亿人在使用它们,所以为什么不试试,看看它们到底是什么呢?)”可知,下文介绍了一种帮助记忆信息的二维结构。而G项“Enter mind mapping, a technique that shows how different ideas and facts relate to one another. —————————————————————————————————————————————————________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
June 8th was officially named by the UN in 2009 as World Oceans Day. It was set up to raise awareness of protecting the oceans, which play a crucial part in the global ecosystem. Without the oceans, no living things would survive, humans included.
As senior students, we can protect oceans in our own way. First, try every means to fight against global warming, which has become a great threat to sea creatures. Second, when surfing or boating, never drop litter into the sea. In addition, take an active part in voluntary activities launched by ocean conservation organizations.
Every little effort counts. As long as we try our best, we will make a difference to the marine environment.

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman — polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.
With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out a book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn’t get that hint, since he didn’t stop grabbing the cookies.
“How annoying!” she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched (用力咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren’t so nice, I would blacken his eyes.” With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, “Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn’t he even show any gratefulness?”
She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed in relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped (喘气) with surprise.

Paragraph 2:
Surprisingly, she found the man sitting just behind her.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped (喘气) with surprise. She took it out carefully and was surprised to see her own packet of cookies. At that moment the woman was so ashamed that she covered her face with her wide-open mouth, and for an instant she blushed. The plane seemed to stop there rooted to the spot. “Why had I ridiculously considered him a cookie thief? I owe him a sincere apology,” she thought. Just as she was blank in her head, suddenly, a soft and clear voice, “Excuse me, Lady,” woke her up to the real world. Instinctively she glanced back to see who he was.
Paragraph 2:
Surprisingly, she found the man sitting right behind her. It was the man who, she thought, was rude and ate her cookies, smiling at her. She lowered a bit of her body shamefully, hesitated for a moment and introduced herself nervously. After further communication, she was surprised to find that the gentleman was her new boss in London. She was struck dead with embarrassment with her heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. All the air seemed to be frozen, and she felt as if the whole world were watching her. Seeing her embarrassment and nervousness, the considerate boss patiently calmed her down and asked her to discuss her new job in advance. “What a coincidence! What an unforgivable mistake!” she thought.
