While it remains debatable whether animals really feel what we call love, hate and happiness, the following might be yet more proof that humans are not the only creatures capable of emotions.
A friend in need
While some cats might spot a helpless baby chicken and think “lunch”, an orange kitten in Russia saw a friend in need of a helping paw. Baby chickens are particularly vulnerable to attacks from rats and other vermin (害兽), but this little chick stayed safe thanks to its energetic feline (猫科的) bodyguard.
We've got each other
On an island off the coast of China, a little macaque (猕猴) was seen resting its head on a dove. Having got lost, the macaque was found and taken in by the staff of an animal protection center. It soon became friends with the white dove, which had also been adopted by center staff. For two months they ate together and slept together.
Fast friends
When baby elephant Themba's mother died, the veterinary (兽医的) team at Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa hoped another elephant would adopt the orphan, but none would feed him. The team took the baby elephant in, giving him constant care and attention, but Themba was too distressed to eat. Fearing he would starve to death, the team introduced him to a sheep called Albert, who they hoped could provide companionship for Themba. Despite some initial tension, the two quickly became inseparable and Themba finally started eating.
A strong bond
Koko the gorilla, one of the most studied primates (灵长类动物) in history, communicated in American Sign Language. Koko asked for a cat in 1984. She chose a grey kitten and called it All Ball. Koko took care of All Ball as if it were a baby gorilla, and would appear distressed when parted from it. When All Ball was hit and killed by a car, Koko was seen mourning (哀悼) the cat's death.

It has become a daily routine (常规) for the students on bus No.7 in Arlington, Washington to wave to the “grandma in window”.
Every day for the past five years, you could find the old lady Louise Edlen sitting at her dining room table having breakfast as the kids were passing by. But one day in early October this year she was not found sitting in her usual place.
The kids didn't see their old friend for a few days. They got worried. Finally, they learned that she had suffered a stroke (中风). “It was kind of heartbreaking to us because she was always there in the past five years,” seventhgrader Axtin Bandewerfhorst said.
But she was upset and was obviously still thinking about the 20 boys and girls who passed by her home every day. The day after the bus driver Carol Mitzelfeld brought a bouquet of flowers from the students to Edlen, the kids looked out of the window to find a sign reading “Thank you”.
“That really made me happy,” 10thgrader Cheyanne Holt said. “It shows how much we mean to her.”
So to welcome Edlen home from the hospital, they made her a sign of their own: a photo of the kids waving from inside the bus.
“Carol told us that a lot of times she even does not remember her daughter's name, but she always remembers to wave to the kids on the bus,” Bandewerfhorst said. “That made me feel really special.”
Louise's husband, Dave Elden, said, “The students' daily move gives her something to look forward to every day.”
Elden has returned home, and is back to waving to the students every day.

A new study, published in The Journal of Experimental Psychology found that communication interactions that included voice, like a phone call or video chat, created stronger social bonds than communication through typing, like text messaging or email.
In the study, researchers used various experiments to gauge connectedness. In one, they asked 200 people to make predictions about what it would be like to reconnect with an old friend by email or by phone and then assigned people at random to do one or the other. Although people anticipated that a phone call would be more awkward, hearing someone's voice actually made the experience better. However, people who participated in the experiment reported that they did form a significantly stronger bond with their old friend on the phone versus email, and they did not feel more awkward.
In another experiment, the researchers had strangers connected by either texting, talking over video chat, or talking using only audio. They found that both forms of voice communication—whether video or audio only—made the strangers feel significantly more connected than when they communicated via text.
Sabrina Romanoff, a Harvard trained clinical psychologist based in New York City, says people tend to text or email instead of calling because of convenience, as they see it as a__controlled__form__of__communication where they can “correspond information exactly in the way they intend without unexpected additions by the other person.”
Romanoff says that in reality, texting can make it hard to determine the true meaning behind a conversation. A phone call is actually more convenient when considering the net effects of the message. Each party is more present, and therefore, able to gauge the meaning behind the content without ruminating on the endless possible meanings behind words and punctuation.

A.Typing a letter.
B.Sending an email.
C.Having a video chat.

B.Being less awkward.
C.Being more straightforward.
D.Being less expensive.
根据最后一段“Romanoff says that in reality ... meanings behind words and punctuation. (Romanoff(罗曼诺夫)说,在现实生活中,发短信会让人很难判断谈话背后的真实意思。考虑到信息的最终结果,打电话实际上更方便。每一方都在场,因此,能够衡量内容背后的意义,而不必推敲词和标点背后无数个可能的含义。)”可知,相比发短信,打电话的优势在于更直截了当。故选C。

It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest. Without it we would not have grown into primates Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat. Without competition, Columbus wouldn't have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb.
Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn't competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize. Perhaps the ecological definition—the simultaneous (同时) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrients, living space, or light—better explains it.
As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin's theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendships learn to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstance, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective. Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student's fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve a similar recognition.
Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life. It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork. A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy (妒忌) can tear friendships apart. Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost.
32.What does the ecological definition mainly explain?
A.How to win the competition.
B.How friends compete with each other.
C.What competition exactly is.
D.What the result of competition is.
33.According to the writer, we can infer that high school students compete because ________.
A.they know the laws of nature well
B.they are divided into different groups
C.friendship is a burden for them
D.the number of them is too large
根据第三段第二句“There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place.(这里有大量的高中生,为了区分他们,要对他们进行排名和分类。)”
34.Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition?
A.Friendship is always based on competition.
B.The degree of competition is vital to friendship.
C.Competition is a result of lost friendship.

35.What does the author think of “competition”?
A.The result of competition are out of control.
B.Competition becomes fierce in high school.
C.Competition is certain to happen at school.
D.Friendship is not as important as competition at school.

As parents, we must teach our children the importance and value of honesty from an early age. However, teaching our children to be honest isn't the same as teaching them to tie their shoes. __36__ Otherwise, they'll prefer to lie in order to avoid being punished.
__37__ Lying in order to receive objects or attention are two main ones. Another one is to avoid punishment—parents should be careful with this one. Being too strict can result in children's lying more often.
When should we start teaching them the difference between lies and the truth? Children under the age of 3 don't have the ability to understand the importance of values. As soon as they turn 3, however, it's important for parents to watch carefully. It isn't enough for parents to teach. We must also observe our child's behavior. __38__
Rewarding children can be a great motivation for their learning. They will start to link honesty with something positive. This will help create a trustful environment within the family. __39__ Parents are the models that their children follow, and therefore a lot will depend on a parent's behavior.
As our children grow up, it's important to teach them the value of honesty. __40__ It's important for them to realize that telling lies prevents us from helping them in the most appropriate way.

My name is Frank. I was from the north of England, but my father had been offered a better job in London, and our whole family had moved there. I was 12 and, having lost all my old friends, I felt shy and lonely at my new school.
There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren't very interested in a shy new boy. Tony was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Tony and I become good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
Five years later, Tony and I are still in the same class. But just under a year ago, Tony's father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Tony, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody. He had always been a clever, hardworking student but now he seemed to lose all interest in his work. He started losing friends. These days, Tony and I see each other from time to time, but we're no longer close.
About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the cloakroom, I went inside to get it, and found Tony going through the pockets of people's coats. In his hand he had a wallet ... and I knew it wasn't his!

My mouth fell open and I just looked at him. I was so surprised that I couldn't believe my eyes. Tony went bright red with a very embarrassed look. “I'll put it back right now,” he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word. I really hoped that Tony would explain why he had been stealing, but he didn't. At the same time, small amounts of money started disappearing from students' lockers. I wondered if the thief was Tony but decided not to say anything to anyone. I really hoped it wasn't him.
I knew I must do something to help Tony. Having thought about the situation for a while, I secretly raised some money from my friends and classmates. With the money, I went to see Tony. “I know you are in trouble. A friend in need is a friend indeed.” I told him with concern giving him the money we raised. He hesitated for a moment, and then took the money, moved to tears. He expressed his gratitude to us and regretted his theft deeply. He was determined to earn money by his own labor and never steal again.
