B An English mother Liz Pinfield-Wells, has recycled more than 2,600 pounds (1,200 kg) of trash (垃圾) through a DIY recycling center in her garden shed (棚) in Dawley Shropshire. Pinfield-Wells established the recycling center after the birth of her third child when she discovered that her town’s roadside recycling program did not accept certain items. The recycling center accepts 30 different categories of recyclable waste. Pin field-Wells encouraged the public to leave their mixed recycled items at the end of her driveway, and dozens of residents have since dropped off their trash in her shed. She has even accepted Pringles tubes, which have metal and plastic components and should not be placed in the roadside bin. “Setting up the recycling drop-off center, in my front garden has hopefully helped the community to recycle more. It can sometimes seem a little difficult knowing where to start but with every small step, it gets that little bit easier,” she said. Every month, she sends the collected items in vacuum-packed (真空包装的) bags to TerraCycle, a firm that turns the waste into small plastic balls for use in other products, such as watering cans and benches. The weight of the trash is then changed into points for money, which can be paid out twice a year to a charity or sports organization of her choice. In the last three years, Pinfield-Wells has raised more than £1,000, which she has donated to her 14-year-old daughter Zoe’s gymnastic group to buy new equipment. She has also donated money to another local charity to buy woodchips for their community garden. Pinfield-Wells hopes that her recycling center will raise awareness about the importance of recycling and encourage others to take small steps to reduce their carbon footprint. She has created a Facebook group for here eco-center recycling shed, which now has over 1,000 members. 4. What inspired Liz to start the program? A. Overloading trash. B. Her preference for DIY practice. C. Her children’s encouragement. D. Limitation of local trash service. 5. What does TerraCycle do? A. It develops plastic tubes. B. It produces vacuum-packed bags. C. It processes waste into small plastic balls. D. It supplies woodchips for community gardens. 6. What is Liz’s expectation of her center? A. It will get new equipment. B. It will boost community economy. C It will replace the local trash service. D. It will motivate more people to take action. 7 Which of the following best describes Liz Pinfield-Wells? A. Ambitious and intelligent. B. Responsible and thoughtful. C. Adventurous and determined. D. Pioneering and humble. C Engineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and management of tiny amounts of liquid, and the best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion. The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated together and can be rearranged, water droplets (水滴) could do something similar. This could be a great way to build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body. In their research, Du’s team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a liquid path. They created a grid with tiny plastic pillars (柱子) that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched, they joined together but did not spill (溢出) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the liquid path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the setup of blocks. The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new discoveries are made. Du’s team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs made from living cells are studied. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient. 8. How does the device created by the team in China differ from others? A. It is made from plastic. B. It employs water drops. C. It is designed by a student. D. It features metal structures. 9. What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Enlarged. B. Combined. C. Distinguished. D. Shown. 10. What does Du’s team expect of the system? A. It will have wide application in medical treatment. B. It will bring a heavy profit to the team. C. It will enable students to be fond of blocks. D. It will decrease the cost of artificial organs. 11. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Exposure to Various Blocks Sharpens the Brain B. There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing Blocks C. Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids D. Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water Droplets D The Food and Drug Administration (F. D. A.) announced a new proposal on Wednesday that would change the criteria for which packaged foods the agency considers “healthy”, in an attempt to modernize its approach to nutrition and reduce the burden of diet-related diseases. Currently, about 5 percent of all packaged foods are labeled “healthy”, according to the agency. The definition, which was set in 1994, allows for food manufacturers to add the word “healthy” to their products, as long as the products have limited amounts of total fat, saturated (饱和的) fat, cholesterol and sodium (钠) and provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of one or more of the following nutrients: vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein or dietary fiber. (Seafood, game meat and raw fruits and vegetables have slightly different criteria.) In 2021, the F. D. A. updated its guidelines to allow for some foods to contain more total fat and to include some that provide at least 10 percent of the daily value of vitamin D. Importantly, there is currently no limit on added sugars under the current definition- an omission that the F. D. A. believes is inconsistent with today’s nutrition science. “The old rule was really outdated— you could create any kind of Frankenstein food that met the nutrient criteria and label it as healthy,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a professor of nutrition in Boston. “This is a major advance.” The proposed rule, which the agency announced to coincide with Wednesday’s White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, introduces a new limit on added sugars-in general, no more than 2.5 grams per serving, although this can vary depending on the food. The new definition aims to encourage healthy eating by prioritizing a mix of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, proteins and certain oils, including vegetable oils. A “healthy” food would need to contain a minimum amount of at least one of those food groups and be under the proposed limits for saturated fats and added sugars. Raw whole fruits and vegetables would automatically qualify. Many sugary cereals (谷物), highly sweetened yogurts and white breads, which might currently qualify as “healthy” under the existing definition, would be removed under the new rule. 12. What can we know about the old rule? A. It was set in 1994. B. It can guarantee people’s health. C. It has strict limit on added sugar. D. It was consistent with today’s nutrition science. 13. What’s Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian’s attitude to the new proposal? A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Supportive. 14. Which of the following will automatically qualify for the new proposal? A. Seafood. B. Highly sweetened yogurts. C. Raw whole fruits and vegetables. D. Food containing large amounts of total fat. 15. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A diary. B. A textbook. C. A newspaper. D. A science fiction. Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating rather than substantial meals. ____16____. This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school and having people like me. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit so the first day would be perfect. On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was geometry, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost. After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope I see you again and your day goes all right.” I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular. A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to go find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it?” He looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 清新一中2024-2025学年第二学期高二级第一次月测 英语科试题 第一部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A The Student Activity Center (SAC) is a vibrant and dynamic place that serves as a center for various student-led activities. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient.(杜鑫的团队还在努力改进这个系统,他们打算制作更小的通道。 故选A。 根据文章第二段“The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks.(这个项目的灵感来源于积木。 C“Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids”准确概括了文章核心内容,即积木的拼接和排列方式给研究员带来灵感,促使其设计出用水滴控制液体流动的新方法来研究液体。故选C。 D The Food and Drug Administration (F. A 13. D 14. C 15. 及下文“The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods. 【17题详解】 根据第二段“For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. Their shrill laughing let me blush with shame. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there, keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do is just to make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was certain, that is, I must removed myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to leave until they walked far away. Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I felt very strange since I was new here without making any friends. Turning around, I saw Diane who came up to me with a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me.
