It was 2002 in Los Angeles, and we were seated on a bench in an outdoor holding area, waiting with other studio audience members. The show called Alpha Insights, similar to a talk show, was picking stories that fitted their topic. Its hosts included my favorite Hunter Bryant. Production assistants were handing out clipboards with questionnaires (调查表) , and the topic was suggested to be about social slips.
I was sandwiched between my eighteen-year-old niece Jessica and best friend Lisa, coaching them. “They want stories that’ll make for great TV, so we’re going to have to fight for ourselves,” I said. “Think of the most awkward social moment you’ve encountered, something others can relate to and might find a bit humorous.”
My own story was peerless. I’d gone to a fancy party where I was excited to mix. As I reached for a snack from a passing plate, my sleeve got caught on a decoration, and the whole plate tipped, sending food flying. People stared, and I felt my face burning. I noted it down, noticing the assistant’s smile as she scanned my words.
I’m sure our aggressive fighting will pay off, and I also want to meet Hunter Bryant up close. After others shared their stories, I was confident my story was going to make it on the air.
As we entered the sound stage, I actually began to get butterflies in my stomach, sweating even though the studio was freezing cold. I told Lisa I had a hunch we’d be interviewed. Sure enough, the assistant came over and asked us to share our stories as we’d told her. Moments later, the show began. The hosts took the stage to rouse applause. Then, Hunter Bryant was beside me, microphone in hand, as I recounted my embarrassing moment to him and the whole audience, just as I’d pictured. It was a thrilling and almost dreamlike experience, and my positive approach and attitude had paid off.
4. Why were the author, Jessica and Lisa seated in an outdoor holding area?
A. To meet the hosts. B. To get questionnaires.
C. To discuss social slips. D. To participate in a TV show.
5. What does the underlined word “peerless” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Boring. B. Average.
C. Remarkable. D. Daring.
6. How did the author feel when entering the sound stage?
A. Nervously excited. B. Confidently certain.
C. Angrily disappointed. D. Cheerfully content.
7 What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Sharing Stories to friends
B. The Party Embarrassment
C Meeting Hunter Bryant on Set
D. An Experience of Recording a TV Program
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. D

Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. But the question is — is that because social media causes that person to be depressed? Or is it because people who are depressed tend to also use social media more, and spend less time exercising and being in green spaces? “That is what we wanted to understand,” says Carol Vidal, the first author of the study, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.
In their study, 376 young adults in Canada were asked to complete three online questionnaires between May 2021 and January 2022. At each point, participants self-reported depressive symptoms based on the PHQ-9 — a nine-item scale (表) that is commonly used to measure depression — as well as social media use, green space exposure, and physical activity.
Researchers found that participants who had higher social media use tended to be more depressed, and people who were more depressed also tended to use social media more. However, researchers found that social media use did not cause an increase or decrease in depressive symptom levels over time.
Researchers also found that higher levels of social media use and higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with lower levels of green space exposure. In addition, higher eveningness was also associated with higher depressive symptom levels.
One study author says these results show social media use and depression are associated, but do not provide evidence that greater social media use predicts an increase in depressive symptoms over time. Other professionals in the team also say these findings indicate people who suffer from depression should be careful about the amount of time they spend on social media and should be encouraged to integrate other healthy habits into their lifestyle.
Vidal and other investigators believe there are many aspects to social media, and there are important next steps to learn more about its impact on the mental health of people of all ages, including younger children and adolescents.
12. Why did Carol Vidal conduct the study?
A. To explore how depression affects social media use.
B. To investigate if green spaces benefit mental health.
C. To find the link between social media and depression.
D. To determine why social media contributes to depression.
13. How did the researchers measure depression in the study?
A. By using a nine-item form called PHQ-9.
B. By observing the participants’ daily behavior.
C. By asking the participants’ friends and families.
D. By analyzing the participants’ social media posts.
14. What do the researchers advise people with depression to do?
A. Avoid using mobile phones. B. Develop healthy eating habits.
C. Seek professional help regularly. D. Cut down the time on social media.
15. What does the follow-up study aim to find out?
A. The types of social media.
B. The influence of social media on mental health.
C. The popularity of social media among younger children.
D. Effective ways to limit social media use among the youth.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was sure everyone in my junior-high drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to audition for a lead role in the annual Christmas play. I was there, not by choice, but because teacher Alice wanted each of us to try out for a part.
As a “good” student, I did what I was asked, even if it was scary. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes and cried easily. At school, I was often the object of jokes and laughter and had few friends. I wanted desperately to shrink back into my seat and be invisible. But there I was, on stage. Reading was, at least, something I loved. So, I read.
I finished reading and rushed back to my seat. The spell was broken. I wanted to curl up and disappear. When the teacher read the cast list and called my name, I wasn’t paying attention. No one ever chose me for anything.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star. Come and get your script.”
This is impossible! How can it be? With a pounding heart and cold, sweaty hands, I felt nearly dizzy, but incredibly happy. I walked up unsteadily to get the papers. On returning to my desk, I felt regretful. I should have refused. I felt as if everyone else were looking at and laughing at me. I buried my head in my arms. Gently patting my shoulder, teacher Alice said, “Be confident, Patty. You can do this. I know you can. I’ll help you.” With tears in my eyes, I raised my head and nodded firmly.
So, I practiced every day — while walking to school, at lunchtime, before bedtime, even on weekends. At first, I was worried about forgetting parts of a long monologue that took place in one scene, but I managed to memorize it. I felt more confident after that. At last, it was the day for the show.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Everything went smoothly until it was my turn to give the long monologue.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Fighting back tears, I continued my performance.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para. 1:
Everything went smoothly until it was my turn to give the long monologue. Out of nervousness, I forgot the first word. I stood there, my mind blank. A loud noise sounded from the audience, followed by loud laughter. I became the target of laughter again. I lowered my head, with tears welling in my eyes. I was about to dash down the stage when suddenly I felt gentle hands on my arms. I looked up to see teacher Alice’s concerned face. She gave me an encouraging look.
Para. 2:
Fighting back tears, I continued my performance. To my great surprise, the first word of the long monologue came to my mind. I spoke loudly and clearly without any mistake. I finished the show with no further interruptions. The audience even applauded in the middle of the play after my monologue! I was flying, dancing, filled with the greatest joy you could imagine. I remember forever that I was once a fallen star who managed to rise and sparkle, through my own efforts, with the loving guidance of a great teacher.

C Seek professional help regularly. D. Cut down the time on social media.
15. What does the follow-up study aim to find out?
A. The types of social media.
B. The influence of social media on mental health.
C. The popularity of social media among younger children.
D. Effective ways to limit social media use among the youth.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Everything went smoothly until it was my turn to give the long monologue.
