He told me that he had written a new book.
I have learned 1,000 English words so far.
I had learned 1,000 English words till then.

—I'm sorry to keep you waiting.
—Oh, not at all. I have been here only a few minutes.
—John returned home yesterday.
—Where had he been?

They had arrived at the station by ten yesterday.
They arrived at the station at ten yesterday.
She was very happy. Her whole family were pleased with her, too. She had just won the first in the composition.
He entered the room, turned on the light and read an evening paper.
I (had) called her before I left the office.
多与already, yet, still, just, before, never等时间副词及by, before, until等引导的短语或从句连用。
Before she came to China, Grace had taught English in a middle school for about five years.
She said that she had seen the film before.
I had meant to come, but something happened.
She wished she had stayed at home.

(1)在hardly/scarcely/barely ... when ... ; no sooner ... than ...
I had no sooner checked into the hotel than he arrived.
(2)It was the first time+从句(用过去完成时)。
It was the third time that he had entered the house.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able
to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money
for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn't fit. I let a salesclerk
fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when
I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventyfive dollars less than
I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I
would keep it on until stations signed__off for the night. Fortunately, I didn't got any channels showing allnight movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
125
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set.

126
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

根据第一段中的“when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventyfive dollars less than I had paid”可知,报纸上刊登的电视广告中电视的价格比他买的便宜了75美元,作者本可以用更低的价格买到电视,所以他感觉受到了愚弄。故选C。

Jim Johnson, a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland, Westhaven and Westover Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail. He knew all the kids and their pets by name; he carried in the groceries; he took note of unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn't doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
132
Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on. In many communities, that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters—even the bills—appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades, Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day. Butch, a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before, he got into the jump seat and they were off. On the route, Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now, the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.

Dear Alfred,
I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.
Growing up, I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with
an IQ of 150+at 17, I'm anything but stupid. The fact was that I was
found to have ADHD Anxious all the time, I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time.

However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed. In high school, I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant precollege courses.
While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse. I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn’t. So, I was killing my time at home until June 2017 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center.
Since then, I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics. Currently, I'm learning your Probability course. I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in selfwritten notes from your video. This has given me a purpose.

Last year, I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public, I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to. Luckily, I discovered the job—Data Analyst—this month and have been going full steam ahead. I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as, if not better than, my competitors.
Thank you. You've given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time, I feel good about myself because I'm doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good. I feel whole.

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals (花瓣) all worn. That's because there was not enough rain or light. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I forced a small smile and then turned away. But instead of leaving, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with certainty. He said, “It surely smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it and it's for you.”

The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. Through the kindness of the blind child, I achieved some new awareness. I could see the problem was not connected with the world, but me. And for all of those times I had been blind, I swore to see beauty, and love every second that's mine just like the little boy did. I held the flower and watched the boy playing happily with his little friends for a long time. And I knew it was time to change myself.
Then I stood up and walked to the boy. I went down and held him around with my arms slowly telling him, “Little boy, you gave me the most beautiful flower in the world today. And you taught me how to appreciate my life with that magic flower. I will not feel upset any more. Instead, I will hug every moment in my future.” The little boy hugged me and smiled to me sweetly like the most beautiful flower in the world.
