In the coldest, most isolated place on Earth, a group of scientists in the icy winds are studying tiny worms (蠕虫) that live in freezing waters. In thick, red equipment that contrasts with the blue and white landscape, researchers sample worms from the cold waters of the Southern Ocean circling Antarctica. They will bring these creatures back to their labs to study how the creatures manage to survive in sub-zero temperatures without any protective equipment.
While researchers have identified that some Antarctic marine animals make antifreeze proteins to adapt to the extreme cold, similar mechanisms in invertebrates (无脊椎动物) remained poorly understood.
Marine ecologist Cinzia Corinaldesi and her team discovered that the worms’ survival might depend on bacteria (细菌) living inside their bodies. These bacteria, part of the worms’ microbiome (微生物组), produce proteins that protect them from freezing. This surprising finding offers new ideas about how animals adapt to tough environments.
The team collected worms from the Southern Ocean and analyzed their microbiomes. They found that two types of bacteria, Meiothermus and Anoxybacillus, were common in the worms but not in other worm species, which indicates that the worms did not recently acquire these bacteria from their environment. These bacteria are usually found in warm places like hot springs, which makes their presence in the cold Antarctic unusual.
The researchers studied the relationship between the worms and their bacteria. They discovered that the worms and their microbiomes have developed together over time, forming a close partnership. This suggests that the bacteria have been helping the worms survive extreme conditions for many generations.
To investigate how the worms benefit from their microbial inhabitants in these cold climates, Corinaldesi and the team analyzed the genomes of Meiothermus and Anoxybacillus bacteria. They found genes encoding or related to cold-shock proteins and other compounds like spermidine.
While these findings are exciting, additional experiments are required to prove that the worms depend on the microbiome for cold adaptation. “This is just a little piece of the puzzle,” said Corinaldesi. “We need to continue with the work to expand information.”
8. Why do the scientists collect samples of worms in Antarctica?
A. They hope to confirm their assumption about climate change.
B. They try to reveal the worms’ possible impact on Antarctica.
C. They want to figure out the worms’ abilities to survive freezing waters.
D. They plan to protect endangered invertebrates in the Southern Ocean.
9. What did the researchers find about the worms and their bacteria?
A. They are interdependent.
B. They are new to Antarctica.
C. They tend to favour warm places.
D. They recently formed a close relationship.
10. What does Corinaldesi suggest regarding the study?
A. Involving more scientists.
B. Consulting professional advice.
C. Conducting in-depth research.
D. Releasing the experiment data immediately.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

Dar Meshi, an associate professor at Michigan State University (MSU), led a study with collaborators from the University of Lisbon in Portugal. Together, they found that the brain’s reward system can shape human behavior within urban environments and aid in designing cities that promote sustainable living.
Because urban areas typically offer better access to educational and employment opportunities advanced health care facilities and diverse cultural and recreational activities, they can contribute to a higher standard of living. However, the swift pace of urbanization also gives rise to challenges such as lack of green spaces, increased traffic noise, and social inequalities, emphasizing the need for sustainable urban development strategies that prioritize health, safety and happiness for residents.
To better understand how to create effective urban planning structures, Meshi used principles from the emerging field of neurourbanism. Neurourbanism primarily involves analyzing how the brain is swayed by environment. It employs tools such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify active regions and levels of the brain in different environments.
The study involved 177US participants SV who had never visited Lisbon, Portugal. Researchers focused on the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) (腹内侧前额叶皮层), a key brain area involved in valuation and decision-making.
According to Meshi, the results of the study imply that the vmPFC may be involved in processing a range of value judgments within urban environments, including perceptual, cognitive (认知的), social and cultural values. “Individuals may be drawn to visit urban spaces not only because of their aesthetic (审美的) appeal, but also due to their sociocultural relevance,” he said. “This could include places with historical significance or social importance, which may not necessarily be aesthetically pleasing, but still hold considerable value.”
“The findings can inform the development of human-centric cities, tailored to how our brains interact with the environment,” Kaur, a postdoctoral researcher in the MSU, said. “From creating green spaces to designing transport systems, such insights can lead to urban environments that are both efficient and enriching.”
12. What makes it necessary to develop sustainable urban development strategies?
A. Low development of cities.
B. Repetitive cultural activities.
C Some problems brought about by urbanization.
D. Advanced health care practice.
13. What does the underlined word “swayed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Confirmed. B. Influenced. C. Designed. D. Imagined.
14. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about concerning the vmPFC?
A. Its theoretical basis. B. Its unknown features.
C. Its memory functions. D. Its diverse worth estimates.
15. What does Kaur think of the findings of the study?
A. They are overestimated. B. They are comprehensive.
C. They are contradictory. D. They are instructive.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. D
【解析】

【答案】参考范文:
Does Social Media Connect Us?
Social media has undoubtedly transformed the way we interact. It provides a platform for people to stay in touch with friends and family, share moments, and even meet new people from different cultures. However, the reality is more complex than it seems. While we can see updates from hundreds of people, these interactions often lack depth. Likes and comments can’t replace heartfelt conversations and physical presence.
In my opinion, social media can connect us on a superficial level, but it doesn’t necessarily bring us closer emotionally. It’s essential to balance online interactions with real-life connections to truly maintain meaningful relationships.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in a house where books were treated as treasures, and stored in a special room we called the library. My mother always emphasized that books were precious and should remain clean and free from marks, as a sign of respect. For most of my life, I believed books were meant to be admired, not touched.
It wasn’t until my second year of high school that I first experienced the true power of a book. It happened at the school library, where I discovered a novel — an inviting mystery that pulled me in from the first page. I was completely overwhelmed, drawn into the world the author had created. But before I could finish it, I had to leave for home, leaving the story hanging in the middle. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I had to know how it ended.
When I got home, I searched through the shelves of our family library, and to my delight, I found the exact same book. My heart raced with excitement as I pulled it off the shelf, eager to dive back into the story. But as I began reading, something strange happened. I felt the urge to interact with the book in a way I never had before. I started to underline passages that spoke to me, write down notes in the margins (页边空白), and fold the corners of pages that I wanted to revisit. I couldn’t help myself. The story was so engaging that I wanted to leave my mark on it, to make it my own.
But just as I was getting lost in the story, I heard the door open behind me. It was my mother. Her eyes fell on the book in my hands, and I immediately felt a wave of guilt. She had always been so strict about the rules surrounding books — never to write in them, never to bend a page. She looked at me with a mixture of shock and disappointment. “What have you done to this book?” she asked, her voice sharp.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
I found myself speaking before I could stop myself. “Mom, I know I’ve broken the rules, but this book is different. It’s not just something to look at or admire from a distance. Writing in the margins, underlining the parts that move me, folding the corners — these are the ways I connect with the story. A book is meant to be a living thing, something that reflects the journey of the reader, not just something kept perfect on a shelf.” I paused, hoping my words would make sense. “Books are meant to be experienced, Mom, not preserved like museum pieces. I want to be fully immersed in this one.”
To my surprise, Mom agreed to allow me to read books in my own way. “I see what you mean. Perhaps the true value of a book lies in how it’s read, how it lives with the reader,” Mom admitted. From that day on, the library, once a place for untouchable books, became a space where we could interact freely with the stories. I was no longer afraid to underline, make notes, or fold the corners of pages. My relationship with books transformed into one of true engagement, where they were no longer just objects to be looked at but companions to be cherished and explored.
【解析】

It includes stories from people who worked in the mills (磨坊), those who turned small homes into successful restaurants, and individuals who understood the needs of the growing, diverse communities in the 1960s Bradford.
Through these images and stories, Georgi hopes to help people rediscover memories that may have been forgotten. His collection highlights local landmarks, such as Bradford Park Avenue, and the first restaurants that introduced Pakistani cuisine to the city. Georgi sees this exhibition as just the beginning of telling the story of Great Horton.
He plans to show the exhibition to schoolchildren to help them learn about their local history. “We have beautiful old buildings here that are over 200 years old,” Georgi said. “I want to bring back memories of the Asian community that moved here in the 1960s and worked hard to build a future.”
As Bradford’s City of Culture year approaches, Georgi hopes more people will appreciate the district’s history by looking beyond its present-day appearance. He fondly remembers playing sports at Bradford Park Avenue and the impact of local businesses like Bombay Stores and Mumtaz. “We’ve got almost everything. Great Horton was very famous for textiles (纺织业). It’s got a very rich history behind it,” he added.
Georgi’s exhibition, “Back to the Future”, was created with the help of his daughter, Henna Majid, who is now following in her father’s footsteps as a photographer.

They discovered that the worms and their microbiomes have developed together over time forming a close partnership.

9. What did the researchers find about the worms and their bacteria?
A. They are interdependent.
B. They are new to Antarctica.
C. They tend to favour warm places.
D. They recently formed a close relationship.
10. What does Corinaldesi suggest regarding the study?
A. Involving more scientists.
B. Consulting professional advice.
C. Conducting in-depth research.
D. Releasing the experiment data immediately.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Which Is a Practical Way to Sample Worms
B. How Wildlife in Antarctica Live in Peace
C. Why We Know Little About Invertebrates
D. How Worms Brave the Antarctic Cold

Dar Meshi, an associate professor at Michigan State University (MSU), led a study with collaborators from the University of Lisbon in Portugal. Together, they found that the brain’s reward system can shape human behavior within urban environments and aid in designing cities that promote sustainable living.
Because urban areas typically offer better access to educational and employment opportunities, advanced health care facilities and diverse cultural and recreational activities, they can contribute to a higher standard of living.
C. Some problems brought about by urbanization.
D. Advanced health care practice.
13. What does the underlined word “swayed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Confirmed. B. Influenced. C. Designed. D. Imagined.
14. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about concerning the vmPFC?
A. Its theoretical basis. B. Its unknown features.
C. Its memory functions. D. Its diverse worth estimates.
15. What does Kaur think of the findings of the study?
A. They are overestimated. B. They are comprehensive.
C. They are contradictory. D. They are instructive.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
