六、任务型阅读
Smiling is a beautiful language and people all over the world understand it. When we smile, we send messages of joy and kindness. World Smile Day encourages us to take action to bring more smiles into the world.
World Smile Day is popular in Worcester, MA, America. It is the birthplace of the yellow smiley face. In 1963, an artist called Harvey Ball created the picture for a local company. It became popular and lots of people liked it and began to use it. As time went by, however, Ball found that the original (最初的) meaning of his picture had been forgotten. To encourage people to practice kindness and share smiles, he came up with the idea for World Smile Day in October, 1999.
From then on, World Smile Day is on the first Friday of October. The theme of the day is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile”. People worldwide are encouraged to do an act of kindness and make one person smile on this special day. This includes smiling at everyone you come across, surprising someone with an unexpected smile card, visiting nursing homes, and much more.
Picture this: If everyone does one thing to make someone else smile, the world will become a much kinder and happier place. So what are you waiting for? Smile a lot!
