The launch of ChatGPT, a chatbot created by OpenAI for public use, has underlined the growing reach of digital technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in working life. Like most technological revolutions that affect the workplace, chatbots can potentially create winners and losers and will affect both bluecollar and whitecollar workers.
ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) tool that allows users to interact with the GPT3 model using natural language. The model is trained on a great amount of data, which allows it to generate humanlike responses to a wide variety of inputs.

This type of AI can greatly benefit the productivity of skilled workers. Chatbots offer the possibility to automate (使自动化) boring and timeconsuming tasks, such as writing standardized reports, meeting minutes and emails. Workers could therefore be freed to focus on more important and creative tasks. A chatbot virtual personal assistant could guide skilled workers through different projects or production processes. It can also generate original content and ideas, and potentially help to research and develop new products and services.
But tools such as ChatGPT present a real risk of skilled and semiskilled workers losing their jobs. For example, chatbots can be developed to train employees in an organization, resulting in the unemployment of human trainers.

One day after school, Susan's eightyearold daughter Liz went home with disappointment. She cried sadly and told her mother that she failed to be chosen for the school basketball team. And Liz kept saying that she was an unlucky girl. Susan knew that her daughter enjoyed playing basketball and had been practicing hard for the chance, so she must be terribly sad.
After knowing about the situation, Susan decided to cheer her daughter up. She went over to Liz, asking, “Would you like to come with me to the supermarket and be my helper?” To Susan's surprise, Liz agreed at once. Susan then gave Liz twenty dollars and a shopping list, saying she could use the change to get a treat for herself. Liz was excited and rushed away to get ready.

When they arrived at the supermarket, Susan advised Liz to put the twentydollar note in her pocket. Liz helped her mother collect goods and fill the shopping cart while keeping an eye out for the things she wanted. She worked out how much change she would have, and then chose an apple pie as her treat.
With all goods collected, Liz went to the checkout counter (收银台) happily. Just then, she found her twentydollar note was gone! In tears, she rushed to her mother and told her about that. “What a bad day! I've met so many terrible things today!” she cried. “Take it easy. We'll go to the help counter and see what the workers can do,” Susan comforted her.

The workers at the help counter made an announcement (公告) over the loudspeaker, “We have a little girl here who's very sad because she lost the twentydollar note her mother had given her for shopping. If anyone finds the money, please kindly bring it to the help counter.”
Moments later, a worker gave Liz a twentydollar note, saying a lady just handed it over. “It's your lucky day!” he said to Liz. Liz felt highly excited. “Thanks, but where is the lady? I want to thank her. She has brightened up my day,” said Liz. The worker pointed to a woman who was just leaving the store. Susan asked Liz to wait and ran to catch up with the lady. The lady stopped and Susan expressed her thankfulness sincerely. Then she asked the lady where she'd found the money.

“Well, actually I didn't find the note. I gave away my twentydollar note,” the lady said. That shocked Susan. “I just wanted to cheer up an upset little girl,” she added and rushed away before Susan could get her name and number, or give her the money back. When Susan told the truth to Liz, she was greatly moved instead of feeling disappointed. Though it was unexpected, the kindhearted lady still changed her bad day into a lucky day. Encouraged by the experience, Liz decided to always remain positive no matter what happened.
