But what difficulties do foreigners usually face when learning Chinese? And how do they
overcome these difficulties?Mike has lived in China for nine years and here is his story of learning
Chinese.
Like many foreigners,I only knew two words of Chinese ("hello"and "thank you")when I first
came to China,so simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite difficult for me.
I knew I had to learn more Chinese so I signed up for classes. However,I didn't learn enough to
have a real conversation.Later I studied on my own,but my progress was still slow and I became
upset.
Finally,I found the best way to learn Chinese was to make friends with native speakers and spend
time with them.I started playing in a band with a Chinese woman who later became one of my best
friends in Beijing.I leamned a lot of Chinese by hanging out with her.and she learned English from
me too.So it was a good way to exchange language and culture.
Now I've leamned enough Chinese to take care of a few complicated tasks, like booking
train tickets and speaking with my landlord ()However,visits to the bank, and anything else
that requires technical(传业的)language, are still difficut for me.y

In 1860,Swiss businessman and social activist,Jean Henri Dunant, saw the effects of war,and
countries not prepared or able to deal with the suffering of those who had been injured in the Battle
of Solferino during the second War of Italian Independence.Dunant organized a group of
volunteers to help bring water and food to the injured,to help with medical treatment,or to write
letters to the families of those who were dying. After that moment,he knew that more had to be
done, and he wrote the book,A Memory of Solferino, which encouraged the public to create an
organization which would help the wounded. His writing encouraged more people to support him
in creating the International Federation of the Red Cross. And in 1863,International Committee of
the Red Cross was founded.
The modern-day Red Cross does more than nursing soldiers during wartime. The group began to
devote itself largely to disaster relief and epidemic (treatment. It has achieved even greater
service in humanitarian programs that serve continuously in both peace and war.
One of the easiest ways you can help the Red Cross is to make sure you are able to donate blood
and make an appointment at the Red Cross website. But,donating blood isn't the only way you can
help out-the Red Cross also encourages you to donate your time if you can, along with other
things the modern-day Red Cross wants you to know.

Three Ways to Protect Yourself
from Today's Unreal News
Nowadays with so much news available, many people consume media in an automatic,
unconscious state-similar to knowing you drove home but not being able to recall the trip.1
These strategies can help you become wiser news consumers in three simple steps.
Seek out your own news
Like most people, you probably get a fair amount of your news from social media. You should
change that.Their goal is to maximize the time you spend on their sites and apps, getting
advertising income. That means instead of presenting you with the most important news of the day.
social media feed you what will hold your attention.2.These organizations actually produce
news, usually in the spirit of serving the public interest.
Use basic mathematics
