She said,“I wanted to do something that's going to stretch my faith,my work ethic.” So she raised_the_ante considerably by setting a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams said,“Don't complain in the bleachers(露天看台) if you aren't willing to work hard out on the field.” So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long,as news of Williams' project spread, strangers started leaving bundles of books on her front porch. As quickly as the books come in,Williams gives them to local schools—free of charge—and also supplies books to little free libraries. She also hosts a book club for inmates in the local jail. In the four years she's been doing all this.Williams has given away more than 78,000 books! And she's not slowing down. It's too important for kids with few options.“Reading can take you anywhere,” she said.“You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.” 4.What does the underlined phrase “raised_the_ante” mean in Paragraph 4? A.Improved one's ability. B.Made a different decision. C.Set up a higher aim. D.Found a new direction. 5.How did Jennifer Williams achieve the goal of donating more than 78,000 books? D.By donating 300 used children's books every year. 6.Which of the following words can best describe Jennifer Williams? A.Courageous and generous. B.Intelligent and ambitious. C.Considerate and selfless. D.Confident and cooperative. 7.Where would this passage most likely be found? A.In an autobiography. B.In an English magazine. C.In a travel brochure. D.In a science report. 根据第三段中的“In 2017 ...she gave away 900 used children's books in three days.” 故选A。 B。 C Music can move people in many ways. But for people with dementia(痴呆症), music can do much more. Listening to music or singing can help calm people with dementia and can even help revive some memories. This is why this unique choir was formed by Anne Gemmell, a Lourdes Hospital dementia counselor in Dubbo, Australia. The choir was formed in July, 2022 with just 25 singers but it has grown to 80 people. And it is already making a difference for the participants. “With the Sing Out Choir, we are seeing social relationships improve,” Gemmell told Dubbo Photo News. “The choir is bringing together a community of likeminded people with similar personalities and common interests.” Gemmell added that there are many positive changes in the behavior of the choir members with dementia. “Singing and music fire neurons(神经元) in the brain and we actually see people come alive,” Gemmell told ABC News. “We are seeing language skills improving with conversation and just mood changing. We're seeing people more cheerful and happier in their behaviour,” she said. The choir spent nine months practising for its first major performance on April 30, 2023 at the Dubbo Regional Theatre. The theater was packed with families and friends from around the region. One choir member, retired railway worker Les Orton, 77, said he made new friends at the choir practice and reconnected with old friends he hadn't seen for years. Singing in choirs has become increasingly popular in recent years and the benefits of improving brain function and promoting community is not just limited to people with dementia. Anyone of any age can enjoy all the benefits. 8.Why was the Sing Out Choir formed? A.To move people in many ways. B.To assist people with dementia. C.To improve people's singing skills. D.To develop people's interest in singing. 9.What have the members benefited from the choir? A.They have become more confident. B.They have learned how to sing well. C.They have developed a strong personality. D.They have become happier and more social. 10.What is Les Orton's attitude towards the choir? A.Uninterested. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Negative. 11.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.A Unique Choir in Australia B.A Choir Benefits Dementia Patients C.A Community for Dementia Patients D.A Kindhearted Woman Founded a Choir 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的“With the Sing Out Choir, we are seeing social relationships improve”以及We're seeing people more cheerful and happier in their behaviour可知,合唱团成员加入合唱团之后社会关系得到改善且比以前更开心。 D (2024·镇江高一期中)We can probably all agree that it is good to be kind, moral(道德的) to be kind, nice to be kind, but does it lead to success in life? After all, isn't kindness about putting other people's interests first? Doesn't it require selfsacrifice? Yet consider these wellknown people: James Timpson, boss of the Timpson chain of shoe repairers; Jacinda Ardern, the former prime minister of New Zealand. These two are clearly “winners” in their fields, and yet both put kindness at the heart of their strategies for success. What they have found is that taking a more compassionate(同情心) and apparently “softer” approach to business, politics and sports management brings positive results, not just for the benefit of people who work for them, but for their own benefit. The traditional idea that you have to be cruel, driven and focused on number one if you want to achieve success is being discredited(不足为信的). It's notable(值得注意的) that in the field of business research, kind leadership is more often referred to as “ethical”(有道德的) leadership, maybe because it sounds less soft. But whatever you decided to call it, studies have shown that it can result in a more positive atmosphere at work and that employees perform better too. There's evidence that even small acts of kindness and cooperation by anyone can make a difference in a workplace. An example might be getting the printer mended, rather than leaving it broken for the next person to find, or watering the plants in the office. These actions aren't required as part of the job, but if we carry them out, the working environment is a little better for everyone. Of course, there are still plenty of examples of people who do well in life, but they are selfcentered and unkind to others. But the point is that despite what we might see, you don't have to be hardnosed(不讲情面的) to get on in business or other highly competitive walks of life. You can't be a winner simply through being kind of course—you need motivation, dedication and skills too—but there's more and more evidence that showing some kindness as you pursue your goal is no barrier(障碍) to success. 12.What is the function of Paragraph 1? A.To enrich the contents. B.To reveal a truth. C.To express different attitudes. D.To encourage readers to think. 13.What can we learn from the text? A.Kindness can be a winwin result for both employees and employers in business. B.There is no doubt that to be ruthless, driven and focused on number one can lead to success. C.The positive atmosphere in the workplace is part of the job. D.Motivation, dedication, skills and kindness can prevent you from achieving success. 14.How did the author develop his or her arguments? A.By comparing various ideas. B.By listing different people. C.By collecting the supporting examples. D.By observing the workers' reaction. 15.What is the author's attitude towards kindness leading to success in life? A.Doubtful. B.Concerned. C.Supportive. D.Mixed. 根据第二段中的“What they have found is that taking a more compassionate and apparently ‘softer’ approach to business, politics and sports management brings positive results, not just for the benefit of people who work for them, but for their own benefit.” 故选A。 根据第二段中的“Yet consider these wellknown people ... are clearly ‘winners’ in their fields, and yet both put kindness at the heart of their strategies for success.”,第三段中的“An example might be getting the printer mended, rather than leaving it broken for the next person to find, or watering the plants in the office.”以及第四段中的“Of course, there are still plenty of examples of people who do well in life, but they are selfcentered and unkind to others.” 根据最后一段中的“You can't be a winner simply through being kind of course ...showing some kindness as you pursue your goal is no barrier to success. ”可知,作者认为在实现目标的过程中,善良并不是成功的阻碍。联系前文作者阐述的善良对于成功的好处可推断,作者对于善良可以指引人走向成功持支持的态度。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两个选项为多余选项。 (2024 ·百色高一检测) How to Make the World a Better Place When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. 16.______ Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot. It turned out that a wolf had broken into the pen and stolen his sheep. His neighbor advised, “You should fix the pen and fix the hole right away.” But he rejected, “The sheep has already lost. It's no use fixing it now.” However, the next morning, he found another sheep missing. The wolf stole the sheep through the hole again! He regretted not taking the neighbor's advice and began to fix the hole immediately. From then on, no more sheep was stolen. Good morning, everyone. I'm Li Hua._________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Thank you for listening! [参考范文] Good_morning,_everyone._I'm_Li_Hua. It's an honor to share with you a moral lesson I learned from a Chinese fable named “It's never too late to mend”. A man had a sheep stolen due to a hole in the pen. But he refused his neighbor's advice to fix it, thinking it's no use doing it after losing his sheep. However, the next day witnessed the tragedy again. Only then did he realize it made sense to fix the pen immediately upon discovering the problem. Actually, mistakes are unavoidable. No matter how many mistakes we've made, we always have the choice to make it better. It is never too late to turn around and make positive changes. Thank_you_for_listening! One day a man saw an old lady standing on the side of the road needing help. So he pulled up in front of her car and got out. She looked worried. No one had stopped to help her. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. He said, “My name is Bryan Anderson. I'm here to help you. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm?” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Immediately Bryan began to change the tire. When everything was done, the lady asked how much she owed him. Bryan never thought about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. With a smile, he told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the help they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he had the satisfaction of helping someone in need. A few miles down the road the old lady saw a small café. She decided to eat something and take a break before she continued her trip home. A waitress with a sweet smile warmly received her. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed the note. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the note were four more $100 bills. Paragraph 2: That night when Bryan came back home after a tiring work, his wife handed him the note and the bills. Surprised and puzzled, he read the note. After reading the note, he stood there for a few minutes, his eyes filled with tears, thinking about something. His wife told him what had happened in the café. She was still wondering how that lady had known how much money she and her husband needed. With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was. She hugged her husband, saying, “Everything's going to be all right.”
