Hobbies are man’s good friends. They come to us when we have nothing to do or when we are tired. I have many hobbies, including painting, dancing and playing soccer. But my favorite is swimming. I love it so much that I even plan to compete professionally.
I have been swimming for ten years now. I still remember the day when I first went to the pool. I was too scared to go into the water. My parents, regular members of a swimming club, forced me into the water without a kickboard (浮板). Soon after, to my surprise, I could float (漂浮). I was so happy that day.
Gradually, my parents taught me different swimming styles, such as freestyle, butterfly and so on. After I learned those, I always wanted to be in the pool. What seemed difficult to my parents in the beginning was getting me into the pool. Now my parents hope that I don’t spend much time on swimming.
Swimming as a hobby is surely one of the best. It exercises our whole body. Adults who swim regularly don’t have to worry about developing some diseases such as heart disease. For children who swim a lot, swimming allows their arms and legs to grow properly. It also makes them grow taller. The thing that makes me feel very proud is that I’m the tallest in my class.
Now, I swim for an hour every morning before I go to school. After swimming, even for the most difficult subject, I’m better able to concentrate on what the teacher says in class. Swimming has also won me many prizes at local and state level competitions. Once we get over our fear of water, I’m sure we will enjoy it. I’m going to be a swimming coach after graduating from college.

19.What does “hung up” in paragraph 4 probably mean? ________
A.Looked up. B.Started a trip. C.Stopped visiting. D.Ended a phone call.
【答案】16.A 17.B 18.C 19.D
根据第一段“Sixteen-year-old Lane Smith was reported missing by his father on December 12, 2013. 故选A。

20.—Which of the following questions is inappropriate when asking about your father's profession? _________
—He works as a policeman.
A. How is your father doing these days?
B. What does your father do for a living?
C. How does your father carry out his duties?
D. Where does your father come from?
答案: A、C、D
A选项:“How is your father doing these days?”(你父亲最近怎么样?)
B选项:“What does your father do for a living?”(你父亲是做什么的?)
C选项:“How does your father carry out his duties?”(你父亲是如何履行他的职责的?)
D选项:“Where does your father come from?”(你父亲来自哪里?)
综上所述,当询问你父亲的职业时,A选项“How is your father doing these days?”、C选项“How does your father carry out his duties?”和D选项“Where does your father come from?”
21.—Which of the following expressions is appropriate when inquiring about a customer's needs? ________
—I'm planning to buy a smart washing machine for my parents.
A. What can I help you with?
B. How many washing machines do you need?
C. What kind of washing machine are you looking for?
D. How much do you want to spend on it?
【答案】A、C
A选项:“What can I help you with?”(我能为您做些什么?)
B选项:“How many washing machines do you need?”(您需要多少台洗衣机?)
C选项:“What kind of washing machine are you looking for?”(您在寻找什么样的洗衣机?)
D选项:“How much do you want to spend on it?”(您想花多少钱购买它?)
综上所述,当询问顾客有什么需求时,A选项“What can I help you with?”和C选项“What kind of washing machine are you looking for?”
22.—Which of the following responses is inappropriate when someone asks why they can't use the gym?
—_________, but your room rate doesn't include gym access.
A. Take your time
B. I see
C. No offense taken
D. It's no big deal
【答案】 A、B、D
23.—Which of the following responses is appropriate when someone asks if you can take them to the airport?
—Sure. _________.
A. I'd be happy to
B. You're welcome
C. Consider it done
D. With the greatest pleasure
【答案】A、D
综上所述,当有人问你能不能送她去机场时,A选项“I'd be happy to”和D选项“With the greatest pleasure”都是合适的表述。
