After drawing blood and running a CT scan, the doctor asked, “What is a typical day like for you?” “I am a graduate with a tight schedule that usually keeps me at work late into the night,” I replied. Next, he turned to diet. I paused, “I only have coffee for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I usually have fast food.” The doctor seemed aghast. He sighed heavily and continued to ask. As more questions followed about my stress levels, my unhealthy state began to sink in.
It was easier to live a well-rounded life and stay healthy when I was an undergraduate. The cafeteria served healthy food options. And I had a group of friends to participate in social activities with.
That all changed when I became a graduate. I lived off campus, and I didn’t have the time or energy to shop for groceries and cook. I didn’t spend as much time exercising and socializing. My drive to succeed blinded me to any potential problems with my lifestyle.
Sometimes, I could feel that I was tired. But I continued on, giving my mind and body no rest, until my health problems worsened and drove me to the emergency room. That’s when the doctor peppered me with questions. He told me I had to change my lifestyle. No pill would fix my problems; eating well, exercising, and trying to minimize stress would be the only way.
After that, I stopped working late into the night, and spent more time relaxing, sleeping, and preparing my own nutritious and healthy meals. Many times, I could hardly resist the urge to go back to my old routine. I placed sticky notes in my office and at home to remind myself that if I did that, I’d suffer consequences. Over time, I began to notice positive changes in my life. Now I have not only noticed improvements in my health, but I have found it easier to be productive at work. And I’m able to remain alert throughout the day.
4. What mainly caused the author’s health problems?
A. Lack of exercise. B. Terrible daily routine.
C. Fewer food options. D. Less interaction with others.
5. What does the underlined word “aghast” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Shocked. B. Confused. C. Relieved. D. Disturbed.
6. How was the author’s life as a graduate?
A. He found no friend in social activities. B. He was short of motivation to succeed.
C. He invested much effort in his career. D. He had enough time to enrich himself.
7. What message does the author deliver?
A. It’s never too late to pursue one’s dream.
B. Sacrificing health for one’s career is unavoidable.
C. Achieving success calls for devotion and patience.
D. It’s possible to strike a balance between work and life.
C
Most of us associate air pollution with the outdoors — from car or bus exhaust (废气) in a city to industrial waste or wildfire smoke. But you may not realize the air inside your home can be even more polluted, especially in winter. Since home is where we spend some 70 percent of our time — more if you’re one of the 35 percent of workers who do some or all business from there — these toxins (毒素) can have a larger impact on your health.
The burning of oil, gas, coal, or wood constitutes the largest extent of winter’s indoor toxins. They make the eyes, nose, and throat painful and, in extreme cases, damage the central nervous system. Burning also produces fine particulate matter, or PM2.5. If these particles make it to the bloodstream or deep in the lungs, they are linked to breathing and heart diseases.
While gas and wood-burning stoves have made headlines for indoor air pollution, ultrasonic humidifiers (超声波加湿器) are a lesser-known criminal. Andrea Dietrich, an environmental and water engineer at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, found in his studies that certain tap water can emit chemicals which are safe to drink in the amounts present, but that may not be the case when you breathe them in. “The lungs aren’t designed for these chemicals, which can block the lung passages and make it more difficult to breathe,” Dietrich says.
Unlike outdoor pollution which is harder for individuals to control, people can reduce at least some of their indoor exposure. When cooking, turn on the range hood If it’s not too cold outside, open a window nearby. Using purified water instead of tap water can make ultrasonic humidifiers safer. Be sure to check all wood-burning heaters, fireplaces, and gas stoves often to keep them in good condition according to the manufacturers’ recommendations at fixed periods, and also ensure proper air exchange in newer-construction homes.
8. What is the common misconception of air pollution?
A. It only exists outdoors. B. It is severer indoors.
C. It impacts people more in winter. D. It mainly arises from industrial waste.
9. What is the main source of indoor toxins mentioned?
A. Exhaust from the range hood. B. Pollutants from burning.
C. PM2.5 from outdoor air. D. Chemicals from tap water.
10. Which of the following is a practical tip for improving indoor air quality?
A. Purifying tap water.
B. Cooking with electric stoves.
C. Avoiding relocating frequently.
D. Maintaining household appliances regularly.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend ultrasonic humidifiers.
B. To raise awareness of indoor air pollution.
C. To compare indoor and outdoor air pollution.
D. To introduce the sources of indoor air pollution.

By feeding a single facial image into an AI model, researchers were able to identify personality characteristics, allowing them to predict how successful someone would be in their career or even in higher education.
The researchers from Ivy League schools and others used photos from LinkedIn and photo directories of several top US MBA programs to determine what is called the Big Five personality characteristics for 96,000 graduates. They then matched those personality characteristics with employment outcomes and education histories of the graduates to determine correlation between the personality and success.
The findings highlight the significant impact AI could have on shaping hiring practices. Employers and job seekers are increasingly turning to generative AI to automate their search tasks, whether it’s creating a shortlist of candidates for a position or writing a cover letter and résumé. And data shows applicants can use AI to improve the chances of getting a particular job or a company finding the perfect talent match.
“I think personality affects career outcomes, and to the extent we can infer personality or predict their career outcomes,” said Kelly Shue, a study co-author and finance professor from Yale School of Management.
While someone changing their expressions in a photo could affect how AI perceives personality, Shue said the researchers had found “stability” in results using different photographs of the same individual. “We can also use separate algorithms (算法) to determine whether a person is smiling or not and if they’re holding that smile fixed,” she said.
Shue also noted there are many “disturbing moral implications” related to organizations using AI models to determine personalities. “I do worry this could be used in a way that, to put it lightly, could make a lot of people unhappy,” she said. “Imagine using it in a hiring setting or as part of university admissions. A firm is trying to hire the best possible workers, and now in addition to screening you on standard stuff, such as educational background and work experience, they’re going to screen you on your personality.”
“As AI continues to influence hiring practices, this research invites further exploration into its ethical, practical, and strategic considerations,” the study states.
12. What can we learn about the AI model?
A. It helps perfect job performance. B. It ensures academic achievements.
C. It can identify personality from résumés. D. It can predict career success from facial images.
13. What can be concluded from paragraph 5?
A. AI results remain stable though expressions change.
B. AI’s accuracy improves with multiple photos.
C. AI’s algorithms need continually updating.
D. AI cannot process different expressions.
14. What is Kelly Shue’s attitude towards using AI for career predictions?
A. Concerned. B. Tolerant. C. Appreciative. D. Uncaring.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Role of AI in Modern Education
B. AI and the Future of Personality Analysis
C. Generative AI: The Challenges of AI in Hiring Practices
D. Facial Images and AI: A New Tool for Career Predictions

I’ve always loved travel stories where unexpected moments reveal the true character of a place, especially those that capture the unique spirit of a place through unexpected encounters. Our African overland journey gifted us such a moment — one when a car stuck in the sand and the helping hands taught us more about Mozambique’s heart than any guidebook ever could. That magical experience — strangers becoming helpers, and anxiety turning into joy — showed me Africa’s warm heart forever.
It was the tenth day of our ambitious 101-day overland journey across Africa in our vehicle. As inexperienced adventurers with two kids—our boys aged two and four — we’d already faced doubtful relatives who thought crossing Africa with preschoolers was madness and would definitely be full of trouble. Yet here we were, driving away from Johannesburg’s urban sprawl into Mozambique’s golden wilderness, determined to prove that wonder outweighs worry.
The late afternoon sun painted everything in honeyed light as we followed a hand-carved wooden sign reading “Campsite →”. Palm fronds whispered overhead, their shadows stretching like fingers across the narrow sand track. Through open windows drifted the Indian Ocean’s salty breath and fishermen’s melodic calls echoing from unseen shores. The amazing view totally lived up to our expectations. And our two boys also behaved perfectly well. Everything went on so smoothly and perfectly that I almost wanted to call the doubtful relatives and share with them our wonderful trip.
But paradise soon turned dangerous. As we drove across the desert, our wheels started slipping into the deepening sand, the vehicle moving like a ship in soft waves. Jay held the steering wheel tighter, his fingers whitening as our speed dropped to a crawl (爬行), his whispered “Not now, not here” drowned by our boys’ curious chorus: “Daddy’s truck is dancing!” This was precisely the disaster our doubtful relatives had predicted when we’d announced traveling across Africa with preschoolers.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
And here we were, proving them right.

B 5. A 6. C 7. D

A 9. B 10. D 11. B

A It helps perfect job performance.
D 13. A 14. A 15. D

固定短语have the potential to do sth. 故填to transform。
故填was appointed。
故填Without。
故填What。
根据时间状语从句when the Olympic Council of Asia announced Harbin as the host city可知,此处需用一般过去时。且主语是concerns,be动词使用were。故填were。
故填and。
故填where。

Should Traditional Chinese Medicine Be Promoted Globally?
Good morning, everyone! I firmly believe that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) should be promoted globally. TCM has a long history and has been proven effective in treating various diseases. It focuses on the balance of the body and uses natural herbs, which have fewer side effects. In addition, TCM also emphasizes the prevention of diseases, helping people maintain good health. Therefore, promoting TCM globally can provide more health options for people around the world and contribute to global health. Thank you!

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
And here we were, proving them right.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When we were pacing around the car scratching (挠) our heads, some local kids rushed over.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
And here we were, proving them right. Panic began to set in as we tried to free our vehicle. We pushed and pulled, but the wheels only dug deeper into the sand. The boys, sensing our distress, grew quiet, which was unusual for them. Jay tried to stay calm, explaining to the kids that sometimes even big trucks need a little help. But as the sun dipped lower and the shadows stretched longer, our hope seemed to fade. It was then that we realized we might need more than just our own strength to get out of this mess.
Paragraph 2:
When we were pacing around the car scratching our heads, some local kids rushed over. They were barefoot and smiling, eager to help. Soon, a few adults from a nearby village joined them. With their guidance, we used branches to create a makeshift ramp and placed them under the wheels. The villagers pushed with all their might, and slowly, our vehicle began to move. As we finally pulled free, the kids cheered, and the adults smiled warmly. In that moment, we felt a deep sense of gratitude and connection. The unexpected help turned our anxiety into joy, and we realized that the true spirit of Africa was not just in the landscapes, but in the kindness of its people.
