As an old saying goes, "Food brings people together." Last week, a friend of mine invited me to cook Chinese porridge. It was one of the most interesting experiences I’ve ever had!
We started with eight-treasure porridge, a sweet dish named after its eight healthy ingredients. My friend taught me to cut dried fruits into slices and add them to the pot. Then we mixed honey with the porridge. The sweet smell woke up my appetite and brought back memories of my grandma’s kitchen.
Next, we made porridge with pork and thousand-year-old eggs. At first, the black eggs seemed away from my comfort zone, but my friend’s cooking skills did magic! Step by step, she showed me how to balance flavors. "We cook like this *in order that* people can enjoy healthy eating habits," she said.
The two porridges were totally different but both delicious. My friend explained that food is a bridge between cultures. Many people think of Chinese food as just noodles, but porridges like these are the most famous traditional dishes.
Before leaving, I helped turn off the stove. This day taught me that cooking isn’t just about food—it is similar to learning a new language. With every step, I felt closer to a culture far away frommy own. What a magical day!

Dear Linda,
You asked me what famous snacks there were in my country. I think one of the most famous snacks is tanghulu.
It is usually made of haws. People put them together on a stick and there is sugar on them. But there are more kinds of tanghulu today in some places, such as strawberries, grapes and even little applesFolk tales have it that tanghulu ever saved the life of an emperor’s wife in the Song Dynasty. It is very delicious and healthy so many Chinese people like eating it. Now people see it as the bright symbol of happiness and reunion.
Do you want to eat it? Come to my country, and I’ll treat you to tanghulu.
