Different countries celebrate festivals in their own unique ways. The same goes for the New
Year. Let’s take a look at some unique New Year traditions from around the world.
Smashing (打碎) plates
If you walked out of your front door to find a load of smashed plates, you might be a bit
confused. But that’s exactly what people in Denmark hope to find after midnight, as it represents
good luck. Danish people go and smash a plate in front of a friend’s door on New Year’s Eve to
bring good luck over the next 12 months.
Dropping things
In New York City, Times Square is the centre of the countdown to midnight. But the thing that
everyone is looking forward to is called the “ball drop”, which is when a glowing ball is lowered
down a big flag pole, marking the start of the New Year. Other cities in America now have their own
traditions of dropping things on New Year’s Eve. For example, in Vincennes, Indiana, people drop
watermelons from high places.
Eating grapes
When the clocks hit midnight in Spain, you’ll find people reaching for grapes. This is because
there is a tradition of eating one grape each time the clock strikes midnight. The idea is that this will
bring people 12 lucky months in the year ahead.
Walking with an empty suitcase
In some South American countries like Colombia, you might see some people on New Year’s
Eve walking around with an empty suitcase. Some hold the belief that taking a “suitcase walk”
means they will have a year full of adventures.
21. Why do Danish smash plates on New Year’s Eve?
A. To have fun. B. To honor a poet.
C. To celebrate the harvest. D. To bring good luck.
22. What do Spanish do when the clocks hit midnight on New Year’s Eve?
A. They exchange gifts. B. They eat grapes.
C. They dress up as bears. D. They drop halls from high places.
23. Which country has the tradition of carrying empty suitcases on New Year’s Eve?
A. Denmark. B. USA. C. Colombia. D. Spain.

A child science genius (天才) has wowed his professors and classmates by becoming a college
graduate at the age of 13. Elliott Tanner recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a
bachelor’s (学士) degree in physics, with a minor in mathematics.
Elliott’s parents are very proud of the hard work and devotion he showed to get his degree at
内江六中高一年级,英语学科试卷,第 4页(共 11页)
such a young age and are pleased that he has become an inspiration to lots of people. Elliott’s mom
said, “He also inspires us to be better people every day.”
Elliott’s parents first realized their son was gifted at the age 3, when he displayed amazing
language and math skills. It became clear that a traditional education experience would not be a
good fit for him. Elliott was then homeschooled by his parents. “Elliott ended up learning and using
information quicker than we could provide it,” his mother added.
By age 9, Elliott had already completed most of the normal high school courses, and his parents
were struggling to keep up with him. So they sent him to the local community college, where Elliott
really developed his passion for physics. “For a long time, I wanted to be a mathematician,” Elliott
said. “Then I was introduced to a physics class, and that really inspired me to learn more about the
secrets of the world.”
When he was 11 years old, Elliott moved to the University of Minnesota to start studying
physics and math. Although his college experience is a little different from that of his classmates,
Elliott still hangs out with his peers in the student lounge, discussing homework, debating physics
topics or watching movies. Being with people that are just as passionate about physics as he is has
been pleasing enough for him.
One of the biggest challenges Elliott and his family have faced is criticism online from people
who make judgments about what his life must be like. Many people believe he can’t have many
social skills. However, Elliott has always enjoyed interacting with kids his own age. He loves
playing with other neighborhood children, and just like the other kids, Elliott goes trick-or-treating
on Halloween, but in an academic way: He dresses up as Albert Einstein, his favorite scientist.
Elliott has been accepted into the University of Minnesota’s PhD program and will start his
study next year. In the future, Elliott aims to be a professor at the University of Minnesota and
become an expert in physics. “I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
24. What did Elliott’s parents do when they realized he was gifted?
A. They sent him to a normal high school.
B. They asked for advice from universities.
C. They taught him by themselves at home.
D. They helped him fit into traditional education.
25. What did Elliott do when he moved to the University of Minnesota?
A. He discovered his passion for physics. B. He enjoyed staying with his classmates.
C. He dressed up as Albert Einstein in class. D. He refused to play with kids his own age.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Elliott has few social skills. B. Elliott loves exploring the world.
C. Elliott has no talent for language. D. Elliott hopes to be a mathematician.
27. What can be inferred about Elliott’s personality?
A. He is shy and reserved. B. He is focused solely on his studies.
C. He is indifferent to others’ opinions. D. He is confident and outgoing.

Growing up in rural communities, I always had a love of the countryside, animals and nature.
The books I read as a child often had animals at their heart — The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark,
Charlotte’s Web.
Farming, however, was something I experienced later in life, in my teenage years. It’s
something I instantly connected with, and I feel fortunate that my children have been able to grow
up helping out on the farm and spending lots of time with our livestock (家畜) and pets.
It’s so important to get a connection with farming at an early stage. We all eat food, so being
familiar with where it comes from and what goes into producing it is a natural thing. If a spark of
interest can be ignited early, it can only be a good thing going forward. It’s a joy to see the
children’s faces light up on school visits when they see the photos of animals on our family farm
and watch the video of an egg hatching (孵化). Animals have a unique magic all of their own.
Being around animals also teaches children what they can take with them into adulthood. It
builds foundations of responsibility, kindness, as well as perseverance and problem solving. We
work together as a family a lot on the farm, which builds a strong work ethic and a sense of
teamwork — both fantastic life skills.
I’m a firm believer that you don’t know what you’re going to love until you try it. My hope is
that if children from non-rural backgrounds get a taste of what it’s like on a farm, then they might
discover something they love.
28. How does the author lead into the topic?
A. By showing his desire to keep animals.
B. By recommending his childhood reads.
C. By sharing his own experience with nature.
D. By comparing his farm life with his children’s.
29. What does the underlined word “ignited” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Awakened. B. Expressed. C. Weakened. D. Kept.
30. What role does an early contact with farming play in children’s growth?
A. A time killer. B. A character builder.
C. A social connector. D. An emotional comforter.
31. Which statement does the author probably agree with?
A. Well begun is half done. B. What pains us shapes us.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Interest starts with practice.

According to a new study from Oxford Economics, a rise in artificial intelligence will result in
an increase in “income inequality” as they estimate that 20 million manufacturing jobs will be lost
in the next 11 years. In China alone, there could be 14 million robots taking work currently done by
humans by 2030. While in the United States, more than 1.5 million workers would have lost their
employment to technology by 2030.
The report predicts the use of robots worldwide has increased to 2.25 million over the past two
decades. The researchers said, “As a result of robotisation, tens of millions of jobs will be lost,
especially in poorer economies that rely on lower-skilled workers, which will therefore translate
into an increase in income inequality.”
However, the researchers noted how “robotisation” has the potential to boost productivity and
economic growth. They predicted a 5.3 percent rise in global gross domestic product (GDP) in 2030.
The report said, “This means adding an extra $4.9 trillion per year to the global economy by 2030
(in today’s prices).”
The report remained positive about the use of automation and urged lawmakers not to sand in
the way of robots in the workplace, despite the threat of job losses.
The researchers said, “These findings should not lead policy-makers to seek to prevent the
adoption of robot technology. Instead, the challenge should be to distribute the robot profits more
evenly by helping workers prepare for and adapt to the big changes it will bring about. Explore all
policy options from training, initiatives and new welfare programs such as universal basic income.”
32. What is the number of potential job loss in Oxford Economics report based on?
A. Accurate figures. B. Official statistics.
C. Artificial intelligence. D. Approximate calculation.
33. What can we infer about the trend of robotisation in manufacturing industry?
A. It has been universally recognized.
B. It has helped increase the global income.
C. It may enlarge the gap between the rich and poor.
D. It may increase international competition in lawmaking.
34. What do the researchers suggest to policy-makers in the last paragraph?
A. Boosting national economic development.
B. Providing citizens with lifelong education.
C. Slowing down the spread of robot technology.
D. Protecting workers’ interests by making new plans.
35. What’s the researchers’ attitude towards “robotisation”?
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Conservative. D. Tolerant.

There is a saying that we should all just mind our own business and let the chips fall where they
may, because no good comes from doing good. This, of course, is not necessarily true.
In Hawaiian (夏威夷的) culture, aloha has many meanings. First, it is a greeting. However, it is
also an expression of love and friendship. One man was a living example of “aloha”, for he had a
story to unfold.
Amanda was shopping with her young son at the World supermarket, and she was absorbed in
picking up their groceries for their family reunion. She was in such a hurry that she even forgot her
wallet in the shopping cart (购物车), which contained her driver license, credit cards, plenty of cash,
and even a gift card that could easily be redeemed (兑换) by anyone. It was not until she arrived
home that she found her wallet gone. The woman returned to the supermarket, and started her
search for the lost wallet by watching hours and hours of security footage in the supermarket. After
turning to several different cameras around the store, but in vain, she completely gave up hope.
Andy Jose was a security guard at the World supermarket. He moved to Maui 5 years ago, and
worked as a security guard at the grocery store to support the family and put himself through
college. He rode his bike to work and school every day because he didn’t have a car.
