They require participants to write a story. D. They only accept entries from individuals. D 2. D 3. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards部分中“Students in the 9th to 12th grades can submit poetry, fiction and nonfiction to show their understanding of environmental issues.(9至12年级的学生可以提交诗歌、小说和非小说类作品,以展示他们对环境问题的理解)”可知,The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards最适合擅长写诗的青少年。 根据第一段部分“The theme can be interpreted in various ways, including individuals taking action towards a more sustainable planet, or highlighting the efforts of environmental leaders working to sustain ecosystems.(这一主题可以有多种解释,包括个人为实现更可持续的地球而采取的行动,或强调致力于维持生态系统的环境领导者的努力)”;第二部分“Sponsored by International Certification Organization Network, the contest, whose theme this year is “Passing on Our Precious Earth to The Future”, invites children aged 7-15 worldwide to draw the kind of natural environment they would like to live in.(该比赛由国际认证组织网络主办,今年的主题是“把我们珍贵的地球留给未来”,邀请世界各地7-15岁的儿童画出他们想要生活的自然环境)”;第三部分“We welcome entries from both groups and individuals to create art to promote public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore nature.(我们欢迎团体或个人参赛,创作艺术作品,以提高公众对保存、保护和恢复自然的意识)”以及第四部分“Students in the 9th to 12th grades can submit poetry, fiction and nonfiction to show their understanding of environmental issues.(9至12年级的学生可以提交诗歌、小说和非小说类作品,以展示他们对环境问题的理解)”可知,这四项比赛的共同之处在于都是关于环境保护的。故选B。 B When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had. The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock, and shielding soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work. I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I created a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities. In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium. Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die. 4. How did the author use to improve the soil? A. By adding rich soil. B. By covering it with bags. C. By removing the weeds. D. By applying chemical fertilizer. 5. What does the underlined word “shielding” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring. 6. What is the purpose of paragraph 4? A. To explain the process of transplanting. B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks. C. To stress the competition of different species. D. To state the formation of multi-species communities. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据文章第一段“In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.(以前,在那些小得多的花园里,我会用从苗圃买来的几袋优质土壤来改良土壤)”可知,作者过去是通过添加优质土壤来改善土壤的,也就是添加肥沃的土壤。故选A项。 根据划线词上文“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock(现代农业的两个核心原则可以指导这一转变:尽量减少土壤扰动和强调生物多样性。在实践中,轮流种植作物;优先使用有机肥料而非化肥;将农作物、树木以及家畜进行整合)”和划线词后面“…soil from being washed away with cover crops (用覆盖作物来……土壤被冲走)”可知,这里说的是一些现代农业的原则及实践方法,提到用覆盖作物来防止土壤被冲走,划线词在此处应是“保护、防护”的意思,与“Sheltering”意思相近。故选C项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.(五月的时候,我决定移栽一株开花植物。 根据文章第二段“The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. (摆在我面前的挑战是重振土壤)”和最后一段“Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right.(我用手指穿过土壤,比以往任何时候都更清楚地意识到,我改变的不仅仅是我的院子——它完全改变了我对土壤的看法。它不仅仅是作为生命的媒介,而且本身就是一个有生命的实体)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者打理花园改造土壤的过程,通过实践对土壤有了新的认识,认为土壤不仅仅是生命的介质,它本身就是一个有生命的个体,强调了土壤的重要性及独特“生命力”,因此,A选项“土壤的灵魂”作为标题最为合适,能够概括文章的主旨。故选A项。 C A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg. Norrina Allen, an associate professor at Northwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol (胆固醇) in a person’s daily food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. “I’m not saying that people should take them completely out of their food,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.” Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. “Cholesterol’s role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,” said Dennis Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point,” he added. Bruemmer said, “Eggs in moderation (适度) are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint.” “Moderation,” he added, “is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread.” Holly Andersen, a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat. “If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,” Andersen said. Also, Andersen said, “The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon.” 8. What does Norrina Allen agree with? A. Eggs are completely unhealthy. B. Eggs contain the most cholesterol. C. Eggs should be eaten in a right amount. D. Eggs have no connection with heart disease. 9. What is Bruemmer’s attitude towards the study? A. Interested. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Hopeful. 10. What can we learn from Holly Andersen’s words? A. Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together. B. Processed meat may cause heart disease. C. Processed meat should be avoided. D. The study is supported by evidence. 11. What’s the best title for the text? A. Do Eggs Cause Heart Disease? B. Are Eggs the Top Source of Cholesterol? C. What’s the Proper Amount of Eggs Eaten? D. Is the Cholesterol to Blame for Heart Disease? C 9. B 10. B 11. 根据文章第2段“I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.(我只是建议人们适量食用鸡蛋)”可知,Norrina Allen认为鸡蛋应该适量食用。 根据文章第3段“This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point,(这项研究确实有明显的缺点,包括在单一时间点的自我报告)”可推知,Bruemmer对这项研究持怀疑态度。 根据文章第5段“Holly Andersen, a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat.If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,(纽约长老会/威尔·康奈尔医学中心的医生霍莉·安德森(Holly Andersen)同意这项研究具有“真正的缺点”。 A。 D Many animals depend upon sound to find food or communicate with one another. These species understandably suffer when loud motorways cut through their habitats. Scientists have long documented the ecological damage caused by noise pollution. It has always been assumed, however, that noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ali Akbar Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist in Tehran, has revealed that plants fell victim to it too. Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi grew two species in his lab that are commonly found in urban environments. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels of traffic noise recorded from a busy motorway in Tehran for 16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied. Analysis of their leaves revealed that the chemicals which are indicators of stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the species exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that certain chemicals normally associated with healthy growth in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise. Even the weight of the freshly-cut leaves differed — leaves from plants exposed to noise consistently weighed less than those from plants grown in silence. Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi’s findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the vibrations (震动) generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to cause strong stress responses that are not much different to those that would be found in plants exposed to extreme conditions. The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way. The natural world is by no means silent. Whether some plant species have evolved to adapt to the noisy environment, which might one day be collected and transplanted in urban areas, is a mystery worth exploring. 12. What does the author stress in paragraph 1? A. The influence of noise on plants. B. Effects motorways have on animals. C. The importance of sound for animals. D. Problems plants have surviving in nature. 13. How did Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi conduct the experiment? A. By choosing two rare plant species. B. By collecting samples from old leaves. C. By making plants grow along motorways. D. By studying plants grown in different conditions. 14. What can we know from Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi’s experiment? A. Plants exposed to noise were less stressful. B. Changes of chemicals in leaves were unclear. C. Leaves of plants grown in silence weighed more. D. Plants grew more slowly when grown in silence. 15. What might researchers do in the future? A. To improve the adapting ability of plants. B. To develop new species with high survival rate. C. To set more restrictions on urban traffic noise. D. To find plants suitable for noisy urban areas. A 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第一段“Many animals depend upon sound to find food or communicate with one another. (许多动物依靠声音来寻找食物或相互交流。当嘈杂的高速公路穿过它们的栖息地时,这些物种遭受痛苦是可以理解的。科学家们早就记录了噪音污染造成的生态破坏。然而,人们一直认为噪音是动物特有的问题。但德黑兰植物学家Ali Akbar Ghotbi-Ravandi的一项新研究表明,植物也成为了它的受害者)”可知,作者在第一段强调了噪音对植物的影响。故选A。 根据第二段“One group was exposed to 73 decibels of traffic noise recorded from a busy motorway in Tehran for 16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied. (其中一组每天16小时暴露在来自德黑兰一条繁忙高速公路的73分贝的交通噪音中。另一组则在沉默中成长。15天后,从实验中每棵植物最年轻的完全展开的叶子上采集样本进行研究)”可知,Ghotbi-Ravandi博士通过研究在不同条件下生长的植物进行实验。故选D。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Even the weight of the freshly-cut leaves differed — leaves from plants exposed to noise consistently weighed less than those from plants grown in silence. (即使是刚割下的叶子的重量也有所不同——在噪音环境中生长的植物的叶子总是比在安静环境中生长的植物的叶子轻)”可知,寂静中生长的植物的叶子更重。故选C。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Whether some plant species have evolved to adapt to the noisy environment, which might one day be collected and transplanted in urban areas, is a mystery worth exploring. (是否一些植物物种已经进化到适应嘈杂的环境,有一天可能会被收集并移植到城市地区,这是一个值得探索的谜)”可知,未来研究人员可能会寻找适合嘈杂城市地区的植物。故选D。 第二节阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Go Gardening Gardening provides numerous benefits beyond just fresh vegetables and flowers. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin. “Thief!” I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief. Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, “Are you Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael? I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!” On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out? I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.” I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much?” “Yes, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,” the boy replied. “Then, I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back. I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper’s photo. Paragraph 1: A few years later, I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: After the competition, “Michael” ran to me, holding a violin box. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: A few years later, I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students. Fascinated by the gentle sound of one participant, I was wholeheartedly impressed by his wonderful performance and solid strength. As I flicked my eyes up to glance at the performer, I was so astonished to see a thin face, so familiar, yet now lit up with joy and confidence. The “thief”! For an instant, I was amazed that the kindness I offered to cover the boy’s misconduct would made such a big difference! Paragraph 2: After the competition, “Michael” ran to me, holding a violin box. He asked with a tremble in his voice, with his thin face reddening with excitement, “Sir, do you recognize me? The nephew! It’s your kindness that enlightenes my life, so does your violin. Today, I can give back this violin to you without regret...” Tears welled up in my eyes. B When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. The Whisper of Flowers C A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. D Many animals depend upon sound to find food or communicate with one another. Go Gardening Gardening provides numerous benefits beyond just fresh vegetables and flowers. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
