As he was running,Arthur heard the young man shouting
behind,“Stop, stop!”But Arthur ran even faster. Just then,a taxi
came along. Arthur stopped it and threw himself into the back seat
and asked the driver to go to the police station.
The taxi stopped in front of the police station and Arthur ran into
it,shouting,“Theres a bank robbery and I know the bank thief.”
Quickly after Arthur told his story, the policemen left for the bank
without delay. When they arrived at the spot, they were surprised to
find that the people who gathered before the bank were now crowding
around the young man,who seemed quite worried. Finally,Arthur
realised that he had made a mistake. The loud noise of the alarm was
incorrectly made by the banks system and nothing happened to the
bank, but the young man was worried that someone had robbed his
suitcase.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
The painter Georgia OKeeffe was born in
Wisconsin in 1887 and grew up on her familys farm.
At seventeen she decided to be an artist and left the
farm for schools in Chicago and New York, but she
never lost her bond with the land. Like most painters,
OKeeffe painted the things that were most important
to her, and nearly all her works are simplified
portrayals of nature.
OKeeffe became famous when her paintings were
discovered and exhibited in New York by the
photographer Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in
1924. During a visit to New Mexico in 1929,OKeeffe
was so moved by the bleak landscape and broad skies
of the western desert that she began to paint its
images. Cows skulls and other bleached bones found
in the desert figured prominently in her paintings.
When her husband died in 1946,
she moved to New
—671—
Mexico permanently and used the horizon lines of the
desert,colorful flowers,rocks,barren hills,and the
sky as subjects for her paintings. Although OKeeffe
painted her best known works in the 1920s,1930s
and 1940s,she continued to produce tributes to the
western desert until her death in 1986.
OKeeffe is widely considered to have been a
pioneering American modernist painter. While most
early modern American artists were strongly influenced
by European art, OKeeffes position was more
independent. She established her own vision and
preferred to view her painting as a private endeavor.
Almost from the beginning, her work was more
identifiably American than that of her contemporaries
in its simplified and idealized treatment of color,
light,space and natural forms.

Known as “the Mona Lisa of the North”,Johannes
Vermeers Girl with a Pearl Earring becomes one of the
most known artworks in history. But who was the woman
that inspired it?
In the 2003 film Girl with a Pearl Earring, were
introduced to Griet,a young beautiful girl, played by
Scarlett Johansson, who works as a maid to feed her
family after her painter father goes blind. The owner of
the house where she works is Vermeer, and thats
where the story begins. One day shes asked to clean
the masters studio, and she finally meets the famous
artist. They both start talking to each other about art,
paint,light techniques,and colors,and he gets really
attracted by this young maid with knowledge about
art. Naturally,he becomes very fond of her.
In the movie, when Vermeers patron (赞助人)
sees her,he really likes her. He asks Vermeer if he
can take her as his maid, which Vermeer refuses
politely. In exchange,he offers to paint her for him.
Now,this film is actually an adaptation (改编)
of a 1999 novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier.
The novel is a historical fiction inspired by the
painting and the life of Vermeer, but theres actually
no evidence to prove the story. Then,if this isnt the
story,which is?
As I said,we knew very little about the artists
life,so we cant even know if his model even existed.
What is known is that he was a famous artist in his
small town of Delft in the Netherlands, but since most
of his paintings were actually bought by his main
patron to decorate his house,he wasnt very famous
out of his town.
5. What does Johannes Vermeer think of Griet after
talking with her?
—771—
A. She has a great talent for painting.
B. She really knows a lot about art.
C. She will take his place one day.
D. She can be a good model.
6. What does Vermeers patron want to do after seeing
Griet?
A. To let her work for him.
B. To become her patron.
C. To help her become free.
D. To have a painting of hers.
7. What do we know about the novel by Tracy
Chevalier?
A. Its an adaptation of a movie.
B. Its based on a true story in history.
C. Its based on the authors life story.
D. Its created from the authors imagination.
8. What can we learn from the text?
A. The painting is Vermeers best artwork.
B. The models identity remains unknown.
C. The model was a maid of Vermeers patron.
D. Vermeer really loved the model in that paint
ing.
