A huge fire broke out on 2 September 1666 in London. The fire, known as the Great Fire of London, was the worst fire in the history of London. It burned down more than three quarters of the old city.
The fire started in the very early hours of Sunday morning in the house of the king’s baker. A strong wind blew the fire from the baker’s house into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
At that time, most of the buildings in London were made of wood, so it was easy for the fire to spread quickly. By eight o’clock, three hundred houses were on fire. By Monday, nearly a kilometre of the city was burning along the Thames River. On Tuesday, which was considered the worst day, the fire destroyed many well-known buildings, including the old St Paul’s Cathedral.
The fire burned until finally hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire were destroyed to create a firebreak. The fire then died out eventually with nothing left to burn.
24. Why is the fire of 1666 called the Great Fire of London?
A. The fire broke out in the capital of England.
B. The fire was the worst fire in the history of London.
C. People in England will never forget the fire.
D. The fire spread fast into Thames Street.
25. Where did the fire break out?
A. In the house of the king’s baker.

C. In the house of the baker’s neighbour.
D. In St Paul’s Cathedral.
26. Why did the fire spread quickly?
A. It started in a baker’s house.
B. It broke out on a Sunday morning.
C. A hotel was next to the baker’s house.
D. Most of the buildings in London were wooden.
27. What was destroyed in the fire?
A. The old St Paul’s Cathedral.
B. Hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire.
C. Hundreds of wooden houses.
D. All of the above.

You have a nice salary, but you still feel short of money. At the end of each month, you often ask yourself, “Where has all my money gone?” To help you better run your salary, here come some money-saving tips.
First, you need to set goals to encourage yourself to save money. For example, you plan to have a good dress in one year, to have a car in two years’ time or to buy a house in five years.
Second, form money-saving habits and stay away from the ones that waste money. Learn to keep a diary of how much you spend and what it’s for. Think twice before using money on expensive skin care products (护肤品). The best way to keep your skin in good condition is enough sleep.
Third, pay attention to your daily things. Leave no more than one light on when you leave home. Buy vegetables from a market where vegetables are less expensive and fresher, not a supermarket. When going to a supermarket, take a notebook with you. Write down what you want to buy.
Fourth, save your social life. Take the dishes that haven’t been eaten up away for next day when you have dinner in a restaurant. When it’s your turn to offer a meal, invite your friends to your home, and cook the dinner yourself. If you are to attend a party and an expensive present is needed, ask several friends to go together to share a present.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Four ways to save money. B. How to set goals to save money.
C. Where to keep money. D. How to live well with little money.
29. Which of the following does the author favour?
A. Buying some good skin care products. B. Enough sleep does good to skin.
C. All things in supermarkets are expensive. D. Vegetables in a market taste good.
30. What should you do if you want to save money?
A. Have dinner in a restaurant. B. Buy dishes in a restaurant and eat at home.
C. Invite friends home and cook yourself. D. Attend a party alone.
31. Which of the following is NOT suggested by the author?
A. Making a plan to save money. B. Forming habits of saving money.

The taste of champagne (香槟) as we know it could change beyond recognition in the coming years. As global temperatures continue to rise, the climate crisis poses a threat to the production of wine.
The supply of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, among other popular wine-making grapes, is at risk. By 2050, about 85% of the lands on which good wine grapes are grown will no longer produce suitable wine grapes.
Grapes are susceptible to even the most subtle changes in weather. “Wine is kind of the canary (金丝雀) in the coal mine for climate change impacts on agriculture because so much of the character of wine is tied to the local climate.” said Benjamin Cook, a climate scientist. He published a paper in 2020 on how grape variety can resist climate change.
He adds that scientists are “seeing pretty much all plants, including wine grapevines, start their lifecycle in the growing season earlier, and often finish up earlier. You basically ripen your fruit earlier and typically you harvest earlier.” In the Champagne region of France, these changes can alter the distinctive personalities of grapes grown there. “If it matures (成熟) too quickly, the ratio of acidity and sugar might be different.” Cook said.
A grape's qualities are dependent on its environment. With a warming planet, it's harder to produce grapes that make champagne taste sweeter and boozier (酒精浓度高的). For instance, in a Chardonnay grape, what you’re looking for in a cooler climate is generally an apple taste, whereas in a warmer climate the warmth can change the grape’s qualities to be more like a tropical fruit, or even banana-like.
Farmers and winemakers are picking good places to grow grapes, like Belgium and Sweden, which benefit from warmer weather. This helps with making wine in changing climates.
The downside (缺点) for those Swedish winemakers? If those champagne grapes aren’t grown in the Champagne region of France, you can’t call it champagne, which is a protected designation of origin.
32. How does the climate change threaten the production of wine?
A. By increasing the diversity of grapes.
B. By increasing the cost of wine making.
C. By intensifying the competition between winemakers.
D. By reducing the production of suitable wine-making grapes.
33. What does the underlined word “susceptible” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Sensitive.
B. Resistant.
C. Adaptable.
D. Tolerant.
34. What can we learn from the text?
A. The lifecycle of wine grapevines is becoming longer.
B. A Chardonnay grape may taste like banana in cooler climate.
C. Grapes’ ratio of acidity and sugar influences champagne's taste.
D. Wine making in Sweden faces the same challenge as that in France.
35. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. Will Champagne Become Sweeter?
B. Why Is Champagne Called Champagne?
C. Could Champagne Soon Stop Producing Champagne?
D. What Impact Does Climate Change Have on Agriculture?

In the busy city of New York, a man named Alex spent nearly 30 years searching for his long-lost childhood best friend, Sam. Growing up together in the same neighbourhood, they had shared countless memories and adventures. From exploring hidden corners of the neighbourhood park to sharing secrets under the night sky, their friendship was a storybook tale. But when Sam’s family suddenly moved away during their teenage years, that story was left unfinished. Despite the passage of time, Alex never forgot Sam and the bond they shared.
Over the years, Alex tried every possible means to locate Sam. He checked old phone books, contacted many friends, and even used social media, but all his efforts were in vain. It seemed as if Sam had disappeared into the air. Yet, the bond they once shared kept Alex’s hope alive.
One day, while looking through an old photo album, Alex came across a faded picture of Sam and himself, taken during a summer camp they had attended as kids. The photo captured (记录下) Sam’s wide smile and his signature gesture, running his hand through his brown thick curly (卷曲的) hair. Alex couldn’t help recalling their happy times—swimming in the lake, telling stories by the campfire and laughing together.
Feeling hopeful, He got in touch with the camp organisers, hoping they might have some clues. Luckily, the camp had maintained records of past attendees and they were able to provide Alex with a list of potential contacts. Weeks passed as Alex reached out to each name on the list. It wasn’t until he contacted the last name on the list that he finally got a breakthrough.

C Could Champagne Soon Stop Producing Champagne?
D. What Impact Does Climate Change Have on Agriculture?
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. C
【解析】
【导语】本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了随着全球气温的持续上升,气候危机对葡萄酒生产构成了威胁。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The supply of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, among other popular wine-making grapes, is at risk. By 2050, about 85% of the lands on which good wine grapes are grown will no longer produce suitable wine grapes.( Chardonnay、Pinot Noir和Pinot Meunier等受欢迎的酿葡萄酒的供应面临风险。到2050年,大约85%的优质酿酒葡萄种植地将不再生产合适的酿酒葡萄。)”可知,气候影响着葡萄酒的生产是因为优质的酿酒葡萄种植地将不再生产合适的酿酒葡萄,酿酒葡萄的产量会减少。故选D。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词susceptible后文的内容““Wine is kind of the canary (金丝雀) in the coal mine for climate change impacts on agriculture because so much of the character of wine is tied to the local climate.” said Benjamin Cook, a climate scientist.(气候学家Benjamin Cook说道:“因为气候变化对农业的影响,葡萄酒有点像煤矿里的金丝雀,因为葡萄酒的许多特性都与当地气候有关。”)”可知,后文提到葡萄酒机就像是煤矿里的金丝雀,故划线词susceptible与A项“Sensitive(敏感的)”意思相近,葡萄对天气最微妙的变化很敏感,很容易受到天气最微妙变化的影响。故选A。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“In the Champagne region of France, these changes can alter the distinctive personalities of grapes grown there. “If it matures (成熟) too quickly, the ratio of acidity and sugar might be different.” Cook said.(在法国香槟地区,这些变化会改变那里种植的葡萄的独特个性。“如果它成熟得太快,酸度和糖的比例可能会不同。” Cook说道。)”可知,如果葡萄成熟得太快,会影响其酸度和糖,因此葡萄的酸度和糖分比例会影响香槟的味道。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“The taste of champagne (香槟) as we know it could change beyond recognition in the coming years. As global temperatures continue to rise, the climate crisis poses a threat to the production of wine.(众所周知,香槟的味道在未来几年可能会发生翻天覆地的变化。随着全球气温的持续的上身,气候危机对葡萄酒生产构成了威胁。)”以及后文可知,文章主要讨论了气候的变化对香槟生产的影响,因此C项“香槟地区会很快停止生产香槟吗?”符合文章标题。故选C。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The person on the other end of the line was Sam’s cousin, who had kept in touch with Sam over the years. She was excited to hear from Alex and immediately gave Alex Sam’s number.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 With shaking hands Alex picked up his cell phone. The heart racing, he had no idea what to expect. What if Sam didn’t remember him? Barely did he breathe until a voice—familiar yet different—answered, “Alex? Is that really you?” Both choked up. Words seemed inadequate to express the years of longing and the joy of reconnection. By the end of the call, there was only one thing left to do: meet in person. They agreed to meet at the old neighbourhood park. As Alex hung up, a smile spread across his face.
When Alex approached the park entrance, a familiar figure came into view. Sam, running his hand through his brown thick curly hair, greeted him with a bright smile and stepped forward, arms wide open. They hugged tightly, laughing heartily as if no time at all had separated them. The two spent the entire day exchanging stories of the past and the present. Alex was touched to learn that Sam, too, had tried to find him over the years. They were picking up the story right where they left off. No matter how much time had changed, true friendship would never end.
