Last Friday, at least 5 people were killed by lightning in Nepal.
Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, 70 people die. That is, more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes.
Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters.
"If you hear the thunder, you are in danger from lightning," said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross.
"Thunder means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any time, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until the storm has ended. The most important thing to remember is to seek shelter (遮蔽物), " Lopes said.
Summer is the peak time for lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips:
♦ Stop working fishing, swimming or playing in open fields.
♦ Do not stand under a tree.
♦ Get off bicycle and motorcycles.
♦ Crouch down (蹲下) if there is no shelter.
♦ Avoid open spaces, wire fences, metal objects and electrical objects such as hair driers.

40. Of the people who are struck by lightning every year in the US, about ______ people are lucky enough to survive.

41. If you hear the thunder, the most important thing you should do is to ______.
A. stand still in the open spaces
B. find shelter to hide in

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio (工作室) didn’t want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well-known as Paul-he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other-but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back-he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
44. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first?
A. Paul Newman wanted it. B. The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C. He wasn’t famous enough. D. The director recommended someone else.
45. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?
A. They were of the same age. B. They worked in the same theater.
C They were both good actors. D. They have similar characteristics.
46. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Their success. B. Their care for children.
C. Their belief. D. Their support for each other.
47. What is the author’s purpose in writing the test?
A. To remember a friend. B. To show his love of films.
C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience.
48. What have you learned from the last paragraph?
A. They didn’t like to talk with each other. B. They knew each other very well.
C. They were not afraid of death. D. They were both seriously ill.

Namibia is home to some of the world’s richest wildlife and poorest communities. By helping people benefit from their natural resources, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has helped both to thrive (兴旺发达).
Half a century ago, Namibia was rich in wildlife. But during the 1970s, a huge rise in illegal poaching (非法偷猎) caused a dramatic fall in wildlife numbers. After gaining independence from South Africa in 1990, Namibia became the first country in Africa to write environmental protection into its constitution (宪法). The government passed a law giving people the right to manage and benefit from their own natural resources.
WWF has started a program and worked with Namibian partners to provide training and technical support to help communities protect their land and manage it sustainably.
So far, 235,000 people across Namibia have joined together to create 59 special conservation areas. In just over 20 years WWF has helped Namibia to double the amount of protected space — and wildlife is thriving. Local people benefit as a result. The conservation areas bring in more than 5.5m dollars a year, and the communities that manage the land benefit from jobs created by ecotourism. Poachers are no longer welcome.
John Kasaona, a director of an environmental group in Namibia, says that the success of community conservation is “the good news from Africa that we have to shout from the rooftops. We’ve been successful because we dreamed of a future that was much more than just healthy wildlife. We knew conservation would fail if it didn’t improve the lives of local communities.”
The success in Namibia shows that putting the power to protect in the hands of local communities helps build a better life for animals, their environment and people. WWF has decided to take the idea to Zambia, Mozambique, and even such faraway places as Mongolia to inspire even more people to play their part in creating a more sustainable future where everyone is better off.
49. What do we know about Namibia after its independence?
A. It saw a huge rise in the number of poachers.
B. It has taken wildlife protection very seriously.
C. It has succeeded in exploring new natural resources.
D. It realized the necessity of working with South Africa.
50. How did the WWF’s project in Namibia turn out?
A. It helped improve the legal system in Namibia.
B. It took longer to complete than expected.
C. It got great support from poachers.
D. It created a win-win situation.
51. What should we take into consideration when protecting wildlife according to John?
A. The living standards of locals. B. Populations of local communities.
C. Advice from international groups. D. The development of future technology.
52. What will WWF do next?
A. Start a more sustainable program in Namibia.
B. Protect the rights of local communities in Mongolia.
C. Introduce community conservation into other countries.
D. Find inspiration to protect wildlife in other countries.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.
Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions.
Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says.
