Nasugraq Rainey Hopson is an author and illustrator. She has written short stories and made art inspired by her Iñupiaq culture. The Iñupiaq people are native to Alaska, the US. Hopson’s first and only novel to date, Eagle Drums, is set in Iñupiaq tales about a great festival. The great festival is still celebrated locally today.
In the book, the hero Pina struggles with the suffering from losing his brothers, who have traveled to a nearby mountain and never returned. Pina decides to go to the same mountain, trying to uncover the facts, where he happens to meet Savik, who gives Pina a choice: To follow him or to meet the same fortune as his brothers. Pina’s decision takes himself on a journey that exposes himself to the dances and songs that are part of Iñupiaq culture. Eagle Drums describes aspects of Iñupiaq life as a world that doesn’t exist much in the current world, such as walking in the tundra (苔原) and imagining mythological beings and talking animals everywhere. It will definitely inspire the teen magical thinking in its beauty.
Hopson wants to write more Iñupiaq stories. “We have a lot of oral history and stories in our culture,” she says. Hopson explains that Iñupiaq people use their voices, facial expressions and movements to express emotions as they tell a story. “But you can’t do that when you’re writing,” she says. “It’s very uncomfortable, in a way, to have to write down something that is a performance.” But she’s up for the challenge.
Eagle Drums is for anyone who is looking for a vivid adventure. Hopson says that when Iñupiaq kids read her work, they get excited about seeing something from their own area and their own culture. Other kids who read her work tell Hopson they’re excited about experiencing a story they’ve never experienced before in a new place. “You know, that’s the best part, hearing feedbacks,” she says.

A.Its intention. B.Its background.
C.Its content. D.Its comment.
26.Why does Hopson think it uncomfortable to write Iñupiaq stories?
A.The Iñupiaq stories are little known by people.

D.The Iñupiaq culture is too rich for words.

Quick and loyal, dogs have been known as man’s best friends for centuries. But it might surprise you to learn that dogs are playing an increasingly important role as conservationists. And it’s exactly their extraordinary sense of smell that makes them invaluable for conservation work.
With around 220 million olfactory receptors (嗅觉受体) compared to just 5 million in humans, dogs can detect scents (气味) and analyze them with astonishing accuracy, devoting 40 times more of their brain to scent analysis than we do.
Thanks to this incredible ability, some dogs are now being trained to save at-risk animals by sniffing out their droppings. At the University of Washington’s Conservation Cannes facility, 20 specially trained dogs have successfully tracked killer whale droppings, which only float briefly on the ocean’s surface. Analyzing these samples enables scientists to monitor the health of killer whale populations, which are under significant stress from food shortages, pollution, and boat traffic.
Beyond tracking animal droppings, conservation dogs are also trained for live animal detection, further showcasing their abilities. They can locate rare species in their natural habitats. Additionally, they are now used to tackle the non-native species that threaten the survival of the local wildlife. Dogs also take on other important roles. For example, at Kenya’s Mombasa port, dogs sniff out illegal wildlife products such as rhino horns and ivory. Across Africa, they work on the frontlines against illegal hunting, serving as a powerful security force enhancer.
While dogs may not be the ultimate solution to every conservation challenge, their incomparable abilities make them invaluable companions in the fight to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
28.Why are the figures mentioned in the second paragraph?
A.To suggest the amazing accuracy of dogs’ analysis.
B.To highlight the superiority of dogs’ sense of smell.
C.To recognize the importance of conservation work.
D.To show dogs’ impressive achievements in fieldwork.
29.How do dogs help protect killer whales?
A.By tracking their movements. B.By detecting their droppings.
C.By monitoring their populations. D.By analyzing the collected samples.
30.What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 4?
A.Wildlife products are popular in African countries.
B.Non-native species affect the survival of local wildlife.
C.Dogs are used to detect and prevent illegal wildlife trade.
D.Dogs can accurately locate the natural habitats of rare species.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce dogs’ roles in conservation efforts.
B.To report various environmental challenges.
C.To appeal to people to protect biodiversity.
D.To prove the conventional claim of dogs’ qualities.

While artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it’s now being applied to aiding the protection of giant pandas.
A nature reserve in Northwest China’s Gansu province has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation more than two years ago, and has captured numerous photos and videos of pandas engaging in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides scientific data to help us grasp pandas’ living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible. After all, the earlier the problems are found, the easier they may be solved.
A recent study found the monitoring system can automatically recognize different kinds of wild animals caught in the infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It’s shown that by using the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, researchers obtain a 98% success rate of species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021, this monitoring system captured 2,896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed nearly an hour of footage, showcasing the reserve’s sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in the panda population there.
Liu Xingming, the head of the reserve’s administration, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the near future.”
32.What does the underlined word “discern” mean in paragraph 2?
A.analyse B.pose C.detect D.solve
33.What can be concluded about the monitoring system from the study?
A.It is often used to discover new species.
B.It helps protect the environment.
C.It can precisely recognize any species.
D.It does well in identifying.
34.What is Liu Xingming’s attitude to the monitoring system?
A.Objective. B.Indifferent. C.Ambiguous. D.Pessimistic.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

Roommate Harmony: The Art of Peaceful Co-Living
Sharing the space you live in with anyone can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging, especially when it is with someone who has a different background. Differences in personality and habits come out when you are living with another person. 36 With open communication and respect, you can live harmoniously with someone else, and enjoy the benefits of sharing your space with another person.
Communicating openly helps you know the other person well. If you do that, you will be able to be flexible to their needs and they will be able to be flexible with yours. 37 Part of that communication is being able to create rules and guidelines together. Creating these rules will help you create an environment of compromise. Although you don’t agree on everything, this kind of environment helps create healthy negotiation and allows you to get on the same page with each other. 38
You should respect each other and share the load. Part of each other’s respect is ensuring you are doing your part. 39 Although this could be part of the rules and guidelines you create together, it all has to come from a place of respect.
40 It might not come naturally to you, but with some rules, respect and even each other’s effort, you can do it. Sharing your living space with another person, as different from you as they might be, can be super fulfilling and bring joy to your life, and to theirs.
A.You should be honest with each other.
B.It is true that living with a roommate requires effort on both sides.
C.Meanwhile, people’s good qualities come out too.
D.You’ll also be able to feel more comfortable with them.
E.And in this way will all of you know each other better and feel better.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One hot Saturday afternoon I was about to go into the music store on White Avenue when I saw a dog standing in front of the entrance. As I moved toward the door, it suddenly fell to the ground and lay still, whimpering (呜咽) softly.
“That dog suffers from the heat,” said a man behind me. I picked it up. It lay like a baby in my arms, looking at me with large, trusting eyes. I opened the door and walked inside. “Do you have some water I can give this dog?” I asked. The shop owner shook his head. “Just leave it alone. It doesn’t belong here. Someone will come back for it.”
I knew I had never seen the dog before, but the way it looked at me gave me a memory of the past. It needed me. I carried it to my car. As I drove I could feel it looking at me. In the comfortable silence, I drove it to my home and gave it a name — Lucy.
When we arrived home, I bathed her and dried her long, curly white fur. Then I placed an old quilt (被子) inside a box in the kitchen. Lucy seemed to know it was for her. Later in the afternoon, the children came home.
“Wow, a cute ball of fur!” they said. Lucy turned over onto her back, and my children played with her happily. “We’re glad she found us.” the children said.
However, three days later, an advertisement appeared, “Lost. One small white dog. Answers to the name of Augy. Reward.”
The address was for a traditional clothing shop. When I arrived at the shop later that evening I had an uneasy feeling. A young man greeted the dog warmly, and thanked me very much for taking such good care of her. I knew this man loved his dog. He had paid for an ad and offered a reward. I was sure I had done the right thing by bringing her back, but I was sick at heart to think that I would never meet her again.

范文一:
Paragraph 1:
I refused the reward, and left the shop alone. As I walked down the quiet street, the image of Lucy’s trusting eyes remained in my mind. The bond we had formed in such a short time felt deep, and the emptiness in my chest grew with each step. I wondered if she would remember me, or if our brief encounter would fade into a distant memory for her. The thought of her wagging the tail and playing with the children brought a bittersweet smile to my face. Though I knew returning her was the right thing to do, the house was strangely silent without her presence. That night, as I lay in bed, I couldn’t help but replay the moments we had shared, feeling both grateful and heartbroken.
Paragraph 2:
The young man’s words were totally unexpected. Just as I was about to turn the corner, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. “Wait!” he called out. I turned around to see him holding Lucy in his arms, a hesitant expression on his face. “I can see how much you care for her,” he said softly. “And to be honest, I’ve been struggling to give her the attention she deserves with my long working hours. If you’re willing, I’d like you to keep her.” My heart leaped with a mix of shock and joy. Tears welled up in my eyes as I reached out to take Lucy back into my arms. She nuzzled against me, as if she knew she was home. The young man smiled, relieved. “She’s happier with you,” he said. And as I walked back to my car, Lucy’s tail wagging happily, I knew this was where she truly belonged. This experience taught us that acts of kindness, like rescuing a lost dog, always come back in unexpected ways, bringing warmth and joy.
范文二
Paragraph 1:
I refused the reward, and left the shop alone. The evening air was thick with humidity, mirroring the heaviness in my heart. Every step I took away from the shop felt like a part of me was being left behind. As I reached my car, I couldn't hold back the tears. I thought of Lucy's joyful moments with my children and her affectionate nuzzles. Just as I was about to open the car door, I heard rapid footsteps approaching. I turned around to see the young man from the shop, his face flushed, running towards me with Lucy in his arms. "Wait!" he called out breathlessly.
Paragraph 2:
. The young man’s words were totally unexpected. "I've been watching you with Augy - Lucy," he said sincerely. "It's clear that she's found a real home with you and your family. I work crazy hours at the shop, and I can't give her the love and attention she needs. I want you to keep her." I stared at him in shock, unable to believe my ears. "Are you serious?" I asked. He nodded, a bittersweet smile on his face. "Yes. I can visit her sometimes, but I know she'll be happier with you." Overwhelmed with gratitude, I took Lucy back into my arms, her tail wagging wildly. "Thank you," I said, my voice cracking with emotion. As I drove home with Lucy by my side, I knew that this was a happy ending none of us could have predicted. My encounter and connection with Lucy reveals that kindness has the power to transform lives and bring unexpected blessings into our world.
