B Many factors can influence whether a patient lives or dies. The quality of the drugs they receive, the rigour with which their symptoms are monitored, or — more surprisingly — the gender of the attending physician. A 2017 study by Yusuke Tsugawa and colleagues published in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed medical records of 1.5 million hospitalized older adults from 2011 to 2014. The study revealed that patients treated by female physicians had a 4% lower risk of death and readmission within 30 days compared to those treated by male physicians. And more recent studies have supported the finding. These studies are connected to the past findings looking back at naturally occurring data rather than randomized-controlled (随机对照) experiments. This could conceal any underlying factors that might be driving the effect. For example, it could be that female physicians tend to be assigned healthier patients than their male colleagues. In an experiment where patients were randomly assigned doctors, any such links would be broken. To control for such effects, most studies try to account for the impact of different hospitals and procedures in their analysis, with some comparing across groups of patients who are matched for age, sex, and illness severity, as well as groups of surgeons matched by age and surgical experience. No matter how the data are sliced, female physicians seem to perform better. Researchers say the next step is to figure out why. Dr. Christopher Wallis, the lead author on several of the Canadian papers, suggests, “I think it’s a series of behaviors that are linked with gender. Female physicians tend to spend more time with patients, are more likely to provide preventive care, and tend to stick more closely to clinical guidelines than their male colleagues do. This could minimize the risk of preventable deaths.” Further investigation into the factors contributing to these differences may enhance healthcare quality and equity across the medical profession. 4. What can we learn from Yusuke Tsugawa’s study? A. Doctor’s gender decides the patient survival rate. B. Men doctors’ patients are more likely to be hospitalized. C. Patients treated by women doctors have better outcomes. D. Women doctors are more competent than male ones. 5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Benefits of random trials. B. Approaches of the researches. C. Practices of controlled experiments. D. Limitations of the studies. 6. To regulate such effects, most studies are conducted by ________. A. focusing on patients with severe illnesses B. considering a set of controlled factors C. using the same treatment plan in every hospital D. comparing the data from randomized patients 7. According to Dr. Christopher women doctors tend to ________. A. recommend health choices B. rely on experience in treatment C. rush through patient consultations D. challenge traditional medical practices C As night falls on the streets of Shanghai, Mikiko Chen can often be found pacing up and down through the winding narrow streets of the city hunting for discarded items. “I pick up all sorts of things, chairs, wine boxes, bowls and cups... it’s like treasure hunting for me.” she says. The 27-year-old digital market er is among the first adopters of “stooping” in China, a practice that refers to picking up discarded furniture and other goods on the streets for re- use. She says the concept “stooping” was inspired by New Yorkers who often leave unwanted things on the “stoops” — or doorsteps — leading up to the entrances of buildings. “The core concept of stooping for me is to take full advantage of things,” Ms. Chen says. “It can help you to save money, but it’s not just about reducing consumption.” “It’s wasteful to throw away something that’s still usable; it’s better to share it with others who need it.” Ms. Chen says she was among the first to use the hashtag (话题标签) stooping on REDnote, a popular social networking platform in China. “I initially started with posting items that people no longer used and wanted to throw away or exchange… gradually I’ m receiving hundreds of messages each day.” she says. Since then, the trend has become increasingly popular. Ms. Chen says she is “very surprised” the concept has become a hit on social media, as older generations often stigmatize picking up things from the street or using second hand goods. “People like my mum consider stooping as ‘rubbish picking’ and ‘scavenging’.” she says. “She thinks that people will look down on you for doing this.” For Nan Zheng, art environmentalist and advocate, stooping is more than the physical act of picking up things from the streets. He created an app called “Grecycle” where people can give away or take unwanted items for free. “Gradually we can let people know this can also be about charity and helping others.” Mr. Nan says. 8. What can we learn about Mikiko Chen from Paragraphs 2 and 3? A. She intends to make the most of throwaway items. B. She just wants to lower her consumption. C She drew inspiration from New Yorkers. D. She is looking for valuable things. 9. Why did Mikiko Chen use the hashtag “stooping” on REDnote? A. To collect varieties of messages. B. To become an Internet celebrity quickly. C. To share something still usable with others. D. To throw away unwanted things on the“stoops”. 10. Which is closest in meaning to “stigmatize” in Paragraph 5? A. Be ashamed of. B. Be good at. C. Be accustomed to. D. Be agreeable to. 11. What is Nan Zheng’s purpose of creating the app “Grecycle” ? A. Getting unwanted items for free on “Grecycle”. B. Recycling discarded things from the streets. C. Exchanging items through “Grecycle”. D. Raising people’s awareness of charity. D A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) challenges long-held assumptions about human cooperation. Traditionally, cooperation has been studied through repeated interactions that allow individuals to build trust and win-win relationships, adjusting their behavior based on others’ actions. However, many real-world situations, such as volunteering or donating to crisis relief, involve one-time decisions with no anticipated future interactions. This study, co-authored by Dr. Natalie Struwe, Prof. Esther Blanco alongside Prof. James Walker, explored how individuals cooperate when they only have one opportunity to do so within a social group. Their experiments involving over 2,000 participants examined the benefits from cooperation in public good provision. Despite increased benefits, there was no significant change in how much individuals were willing to cooperate. As participants did not expect others to cooperate more when benefits increased, they were unlikely to increase their own cooperation efforts — even when the benefits of cooperation doubled. “Our findings highlight a gap in our understanding of cooperative behavior in single-encounter settings,” said Dr. Struwe. “Self-interest conflicts with social interests. With higher benefits from cooperation, however, this conflict is much lower and we would expect to see much higher cooperation rates. But, we were surprised to find that even significantly increased benefits did not lead to greater cooperation efforts.” “We couldn’t believe the results ourselves at first, double-checked the data several times, and repeated the study with several populations,” said Professor Esther Blanco. “In the end, we gathered nearly 2,000 data points, conducting experiments online with the general population from the UK. No matter what we did, the results remained consistent. Participants were willing to invest about 40% of their available money to boost group earnings, regardless of the setting.” “Cooperation in one-time situations is more common than we think.” Explained Prof. Walker. The study’s results have important implications for encouraging cooperation in urgent, one-time scenarios like disaster relief and highlight the need for a deeper understanding of cooperative behavior, a defining characteristic of humanity. 12. What did the previous study center on? A. Cooperation shown in crises. B. Interaction boosted by bonds. C. Interaction repeated among strangers. D. Cooperation based on constant interactions. 13. What factor may affect participants’ willingness to cooperate? A. Expectations of others. B. Higher rewards. C. Joint efforts of the team. D. Interest conflicts. 14. What is Blanco’s finding about cooperation levels? A. They increased regularly. B. They varied greatly. C. They were relatively stable. D. They were unpredictable. 15. What would be the best title for the article? A. The Impact of Trust on Cooperation Decisions B. Reevaluating Benefits in Cooperative Behavior C. I liked having the latest clothes and a particular look. Sometimes I felt I wouldn’t be accepted unless I could create the right image with the latest clothes and shoes. I would go shopping all the time. As time went by, however, the things I wanted were getting more expensive and my mother’s answer was no longer “yes” to everything. One day I asked my mother for a little extra money to go shopping. After giving me a long speech about not spending too much on clothes, she decided to give me a credit card so that I could learn to handle money like an adult. It sounded like a great idea to me: I wouldn’t have to ask her for money all the time. I’d be free. A few days later, she handed me the card and sat me down to talk about my spending limit. “Don’t go crazy buying everything you see. I’m paying that bill every month—remember that. Your limit is $ 150 every month. Think you can handle that?” she said. “I can handle it, you’ll see,” I said, already thinking about the first thing I was going to buy. For the first two months, I only used the card to buy small things—a shirt here and there and treating my friends to a meal. Once I got used to having the card, I started going shopping every week, always managing to find something I wanted but didn’t need. So far, I wasn’t going over my limit and there were no complaints from my mother. But one day, I saw a pair of UGG boots I wanted that cost $250. They were very popular, and seeing others with them made me want them more. At that moment, nothing could stop me from getting them, not even the bill or what my mother would say about it. I bought them even though they were way over my limit. Paragraph 1: For the first few days, I hid them from my mother because I didn’t want her to make me return them. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Once she took my card away, things changed a lot. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年高三年级(下)第二次模拟考试 英 语 考生注意: 1. 1.What does the woman dislike about the restaurant? The quality of the drugs they receive, the rigour with which their symptoms are monitored, or — more surprisingly — the gender of the attending physician. A 2017 study by Yusuke Tsugawa and colleagues published in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed medical records of 1.5 million hospitalized older adults from 2011 to 2014. The study revealed that patients treated by female physicians had a 4% lower risk of death and readmission within 30 days compared to those treated by male physicians. And more recent studies have supported the finding. These studies are connected to the past findings, looking back at naturally occurring data rather than randomized-controlled (随机对照) experiments. Christopher, women doctors tend to ________. A. recommend health choices B. rely on experience in treatment C. rush through patient consultations D. challenge traditional medical practices 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第二段“The study revealed that patients treated by female physicians had a 4% lower risk of death and readmission within 30 days compared to those treated by male physicians.(该研究显示,与男性医生治疗的患者相比,女性医生治疗的患者在30天内死亡和再入院的风险降低了4%)”可知,女性医生治疗的患者在30天内死亡和再入院的风险降低了4%,由此可知,女医生治疗的患者有更好的结果。 根据第三段“This could conceal any underlying factors that might be driving the effect. For example, it could be that female physicians tend to be assigned healthier patients than their male colleagues.(这可能掩盖了任何潜在的影响因素。例如,女性医生可能比她们的男同事更容易被分配到更健康的患者)”可知,研究可能掩盖了潜在的影响因素,第三段主要讨论了研究的局限性。故选D项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“To control for such effects, most studies try to account for the impact of different hospitals and procedures in their analysis, with some comparing across groups of patients who are matched for age, sex, and illness severity, as well as groups of surgeons matched by age and surgical experience.(为了控制这种效应,大多数研究试图在分析中考虑不同医院和程序的影响,有些研究比较了年龄、性别和疾病严重程度相匹配的患者群体,以及按年龄和手术经验匹配的外科医生群体)”可知,为了调节这种效应,大多数研究是通过考虑一组受控因素进行的。 根据第五段“Female physicians tend to spend more time with patients, are more likely to provide preventive care, and tend to stick more closely to clinical guidelines than their male colleagues do.(女医生往往花更多时间与患者在一起,更有可能提供预防性护理,并且比她们的男同事更严格地遵循临床指南)”可知,女医生更有可能提供预防性护理,并且比她们的男同事更严格地遵循临床指南。 故选A项。 C As night falls on the streets of Shanghai, Mikiko Chen can often be found pacing up and down through the winding narrow streets of the city hunting for discarded items. C. She drew inspiration from New Yorkers. A 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The 27-year-old digital market er is among the first adopters of “stooping” in China, a practice that refers to picking up discarded furniture and other goods on the streets for re- use.(这位27岁的数字营销人员是中国首批“stooping”的实践者之一,“stooping”指的是在街上捡起废弃的家具和其他物品重新利用)”以及第三段““The core concept of stooping for me is to take full advantage of things,” Ms. Chen says. “It can help you to save money, but it’s not just about reducing consumption.” “It’s wasteful to throw away something that’s still usable; it’s better to share it with others who need it.”(“对我来说,stooping的核心理念是充分利用各种机会,”陈女士说。“它可以帮你省钱,但这不仅仅是减少消费。扔掉还能用的东西太浪费了;最好与需要的人分享。”)可知,Mikiko Chen是想充分利用那些被别人扔掉的物品。故选A。 9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“It’s wasteful to throw away something that’s still usable; it’s better to share it with others who need it.(扔掉仍然可用的东西是浪费;最好与需要它的人分享)”及第四段“Ms. Chen says she was among the first to use the hashtag (话题标签) stooping on REDnote, a popular social networking platform in China. “I initially started with posting items that people no longer used and wanted to throw away or exchange… gradually I’ m receiving hundreds of messages each day.” she says.(陈女士说,她是第一批在中国流行的社交网络平台小红书上使用“stooping”标签的人之一。“一开始,我把人们不再使用、想要扔掉或交换的东西贴在网上……慢慢地,我每天都会收到数百条信息。”她说)”可知,Mikiko Chen在小红书上使用#stooping#的标签,是为了与他人分享仍然可用的东西。故选C。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“picking up things from the street or using second hand goods(从街上捡东西或使用二手物品)”以及““People like my mum consider stooping as ‘rubbish picking’ and ‘scavenging’.” she says. “She thinks that people will look down on you for doing this.”(“像我妈妈这样的人认为stooping是‘捡垃圾’和‘拾荒’。她说。“她认为人们会因为你这么做而看不起你。”)”可知,人们认为stooping是捡垃圾的行为,会因为你这么做而看不起你,推测老一辈人经常对从街上捡东西或使用二手商品感到羞耻。故划线词意思是“对……感到羞耻”。故选A。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“He created an app called “Grecycle” where people can give away or take unwanted items for free. “Gradually we can let people know this can also be about charity and helping others.” Mr. Nan says.( 他开发了一款名为“Grecycle”的应用程序,人们可以免费赠送或拿走不需要的物品。Nan说:“渐渐地,我们可以让人们知道,这也可以是慈善和帮助他人。”)”可知,Nan Zheng创建“Grecycle”应用程序的真正意图是增强全民慈善意识。故选D。 D A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) challenges long-held assumptions about human cooperation. But, we were surprised to find that even significantly increased benefits did not lead to greater cooperation efforts.” “We couldn’t believe the results ourselves at first double-checked the data several times, and repeated the study with several populations,” said Professor Esther Blanco. Human Interaction: Beyond Long-Term Firm Cooperation D. Rethinking Cooperation: Insights from One-Time Decisions 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. 注意: (1) 续写词数应为150个左右; (2) 开头已给出。 Paragraph 1: For the first few days, I hid them from my mother because I didn’t want her to make me return them. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Once she took my card away, things changed a lot. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: For the first few days, I hid them from my mother because I didn’t want her to make me return them. Of course, she’d find out sooner or later, but I decided I’d worry about that when the time came. For now I was enjoying my new boots. However, when the credit card bill came and my mother found out the case, she was very upset, and called me over to yell at me and let me know how disappointed she was that I’d abused her trust. She asked me to give back the credit card. Once she took my card away, things changed a lot. There were fewer shopping trips, and all the things I wanted seemed out of reach. Gradually, I knew my mother was right; life is about more than material things. Once, having the latest clothes and shoes gave me a sense of importance, but now, I’m more worried about paying my bills on time and handling money for the future. As I grow older, image is still important to me, but having the latest of everything isn’t. 词汇激活 行为类 ①决定:decide /determine ②享受,喜欢:enjoy/fall in love with ③喊叫:yell at/shout at ④拥有:have/possess 情绪类 ①担忧:worried/concerned ②失望的:disappointed/frustrated 【点睛】[高分句型1] There were fewer shopping trips, and all the things I wanted seemed out of reach. (运用了省略that的定语从句) [高分句型2] As I grow older, image is still important to me, but having the latest of everything isn’t. (运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
