A. I Sneeze in Threes
I sneeze in threes, not ones, not twos.
I have no choice; I can’t refuse.
It’s true! Achoo! Oh, what to do!
That’s number one just blowing through.
It has begun. The course must run
Until the third is finally done.
I’ve tried to stop; I’ve tried the tricks.
It’s like -- Achoo! -- the sneeze just sticks!
Now don’t you see? There must be three.
My nose will have its way with me.
That’s why, when asked, I always say,
“I guess my nose was made this way.”
I know you think it’s silly-- threes?
That’s not the way most people sneeze.
You wait and see! I’ll prove you wrong.
The third will come. It won’t be long.
And then you’ll say, “My, you were right!
That three-sneeze curse is quite the sight!”
What’s that? You’re waiting for the third?
I know you think my nose absurd (可笑的).
11 / 14
And you’re not wrong to think it’s strange;
I’ve tried my best; my nose won’t change.
But this is odd -- the third’s delayed (推迟了).
By now, the sneeze has always sprayed.
Perhaps this time is different -- please!
Perhaps I’ve stopped the final sneeze!
Can this be true? My sneezing’s through!
And so I bid you all -- A-a-achoo!

D. Most people stop sneezing quickly.
B. Camera Sees Like Animals
A team of scientists have developed a camera that shows how animals see the world. Many
animals don’t see colours in the same way that humans do, because their eyes respond differently
to light. The new device could help researchers to understand how animals communicate with
each other and find their way around.
The camera records in blue, green, red, and ultraviolet (UV). This is a type of light that humans
can’t see -- but many animals can, including bees and birds. The footage is then run through
special software that recreates how different species would see it, based on scientists’
understanding of how their eyes respond to light.
Vera Vasas, from the University of Sussex in the UK, who worked on the project, said that using
12 / 14
the camera to film birds made her realize how bright the sky looks for animals who can see UV
light. She told New Scientist magazine, “The sky is a different colour to most of the animals than
it is to us.”
66.Which animals are mentioned as being able to see ultraviolet light?
A. Cats and dogs. B. Bees and birds.
C. Fish and amphibians. D. Mammals and reptiles.
67.What type of light can the camera record that humans cannot see?
A. Infrared. B. X-ray. C. Ultraviolet. D. Gamma rays.
68.What surprised Vera Vasas when using the camera to film birds?
A. How different animals are from humans.
B. How bright the sky looks to animals that see UV light.
C. How difficult it is to capture UV light.
D. How birds communicate using colours humans can’t see.
69.Why don’t animals see colours in the same way humans do?
A. Animals’ eyes respond differently to light.
B. Animals are colourblind.
C. Animals have fewer cones in their eyes.
D. Animals’ brains process colours differently.
70.What implication (含意) does the project have for understanding animal behavior?
A. It helps identify animals’ sleeping patterns.
B. It helps researchers understand how animals perceive their surroundings.
C. It shows how animals think.
D. It helps train animals using visual stimuli.
C. Seafloor Cables Get Smarter
Tsunamis (海啸) are giant waves caused by Earthquakes, and they’re often devastating (毁灭性
的), especially when they hit an area where a lot of people live. Because underwater earthquakes
are hard to detect, tsunamis can happen with little or no warning. Now “smart” cables could help
change that.
Hundreds of cables already crisscross (纵横交错) the ocean floor, carrying our internet and
cellphone data. Scientists say when new cables are put on the seafloor, sensors could be added
to them. The sensors would monitor seafloor motion, water temperature and pressure (压力), so
that warnings could be sent as soon as an earthquake big enough to cause a tsunami to happen.
Scientists could also study climate change by looking at changes in seafloor temperature.
Portugal and the South Pacific islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu have signed deals to have
the new “smart” cables installed. Scientists hope more countries will follow soon.
13 / 14
71.What is the purpose of the “smart” seafloor cables?
A. To improve internet speed.
B. To monitor seafloor motion and detect earthquakes.
C. To map the ocean floor.
D. To study marine life.
72.What type of data would the sensors on the smart cables collect?
A. Seafloor motion, water temperature, and pressure.
B. Ocean currents and wind patterns.
C. Fish populations and coral reef growth.
D. Internet traffic and communication patterns.
73.How could smart cables help during an earthquake that might cause a tsunami?
A. By strengthening the seafloor.
B. By diverting the tsunami away from populated areas.
C. By sending warnings as soon as an earthquake is detected.
D. By moving people to safety.
74.What additional benefit could the sensors on smart cables provide?
A. They could prevent earthquakes.
B. They could help scientists study climate change.
C. They could track whale migration.
D. They could map underwater volcanoes.
75.What do scientists hope to happen in the future with the smart cable technology?
A. More countries will install the cables.
B. The cables will reduce internet prices.
C. The cables will make travel safer.
D. The cables will be used for ocean clean-up projects.
D. Popular Songs Have Become Simpler and More Repetitive Over Time
Popular songs have long and a hook, a brief line or melodic phrase that’s catchy and repeated.
But recent research shows that over time, song lyrics (歌词), or the words of a song, have become
simpler and more repetitive.
Researchers used AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning to look for patterns in popular
music. They examined songs with English lyrics in the following musical genres -- pop, rock,
rap, R&B, and country -- that were released (发行) between 1970 and 2020. In March, they said
they had found that lyrics have evolved (演变) over the decades. Older tunes used longer words
and a wider range of them, while newer songs repeated lines more often.
Why is that? Some think the more musical options available today leaves us wanting songs that
are easier to process. Others point out that complexity (复杂) isn’t the same thing as quality, so
older songs aren’t necessarily better.
14 / 14
76.What is a “hook” in a popular song?
A. A complex instrument section.
B. A repeated drumbeat.
C. The introduction of a song.
D. A brief catchy line or melodic phrase.
77.What have researchers found about song lyrics over time?
A. Lyrics have become longer and more complex.
B. Lyrics have become simpler and more repetitive.
C. Lyrics have stayed the same over the years.
D. Lyrics have evolved to use fewer instruments.
78.How did researchers analyze song lyrics in their study?
A. By using AI and machine learning.
B. By manually reading all lyrics.
C. By conducting interviews with songwriters.
D. By comparing hit songs to understand music.
79.How many musical genres did the researchers examine?
A. Three. B. Five. C. Seven. D. Nine.
80.What do some scientists argue about the complexity of older songs?
A. Complexity means better quality.
B. Simplicity is more creative.
C. Complexity doesn’t necessarily mean better quality.
D. Older songs are overrated.
