I used to believe that only words could catch the essence (本质) of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0. 99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0. 99 is only 0. 01 away from 1, there’s still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式) : 1= 0. 9, which could also be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999… and live a life like it.
4. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their different sounds. D. Their expressive power.
5. What made the author find the equation attractive?
A. The repetition of a number. B. The difference between the two numbers.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The way two different numbers are equal.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Mirrored. C. Composed. D. Influenced.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Perfect Equation. B. Numbers Build Equations.
C. An Attractive Question. D. Words Outperform Numbers.

It’s one of the most common questions adults ask children: what do you want to be when you grow up? Although childhood is supposed to be fun, kids also discuss important topics regarding their futures. Now, a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status and education often set themselves up for success as they age.
The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to reveal a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace. Rodica Damian, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, and other researchers discovered that as children grow up, their goals naturally begin to change. However, as some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more involved in your community or helping others.
During the study, researchers compared how their goals evolved as children moved from adolescence to adulthood and how a person’s goals impacted their success in school and as an employee later on. Overall, a child’s goals focusing on their education and future status were the most consistent predictors (预测因素) of income in adulthood. Simply put, when a child dreams big about doing well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately paint a picture of how successful these children will be. So, the message is simple: dream big and dream of success, kids! Those goals can drive you to success when you grow up!
“Our work proves a strong connection between a child’s life goals, educational achievement, and future occupational outcomes. This information is valuable for parents and educators who can use it to encourage children to set ambitious goals. Additionally, it helps develop strategies to support individuals in achieving their goals and reaching their full potential,” Damian concludes.
8. What does the study mainly focus on?
A. Why children change their dreams over time.
B. Whether childhood goals relate to future success.
C. Whether early education determines future career.
D. How childhood experiences impact a person’s choice.
9. Which of the following goals remains strong as children grow up?
A. Connecting with others.
B. Achieving academic success.
C. Hunting for a high-salary job
D. Improving personal social status.
10. What message does the author convey in paragraph 3?
A. Dreaming big is potentially associated with success.
B. Childhood achievements greatly affect future careers.
C. Educational goals may be more achievable than others.
D. Adjusting goals can create new opportunities for success.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain the purpose of the study. B. To offer suggestions for future studies.
C. To stress the significance of the study. D. To point out the limitations of the study.
D
Last year I averaged 9,370 steps a day. My smartphone counted. My daily aim? Ten thousand steps. Because goals.
Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing. In the 1960s, a Japanese company invented an early pedometer (计步器). Because the Japanese character for “10,000” looks like a person walking, the company called its device the 10,000-step meter. “It was just sort of a catchy phrase,” says I-Min Lee, a scientist at Harvard Medical School.
In 2019, Lee published a study investigating the actual effects of meeting the 10,000-step goal. The result? Some movement is good, and more is better, but the benefits decline at some point. Your personal peak depends on your age. People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.
The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.
Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight. The goal, after all, is not just to live longer but to live healthier. Full results are not in yet, so Lee’s advice is: “Tailor your steps according to what you are trying to achieve and according to who you are.”
12. The concept of taking 10000 steps daily arises from ______.
A. the findings of scientific surveys B. the formation of a Japanese character
C. a marketing trick D. a healthy habit
13. What does Lee’s research find?
A. Walking step targets vary with age.
B. Walking more makes one look younger.
C. Old people benefit more from walking longer.
D. Reaching 10,000 steps daily appeals to many.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The difference in energy consumption among age groups.
B. The contrast between the benefits of walking and running.
C. The reason for setting different step goals based on age.
D. The link between energy consumption and health outcomes.
15. What will newer studies focus on?
A How steps change one’s lifestyle. B. How steps affect one’s lifespan.
C. How steps reduce death rates. D. How steps boost healthy living.

七、 读后续写 (本题共计1小题,总分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事
Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,” his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he’d win again.
He’s taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, we all love ice cream, but it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it’s time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.””
Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn’t perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

12. The concept of taking 10,000 steps daily arises from ______.
A. the findings of scientific surveys B. the formation of a Japanese character
C. a marketing trick D. a healthy habit
A. How steps change one’s lifestyle. B. How steps affect one’s lifespan.
C. How steps reduce death rates. D. How steps boost healthy living.
【答案】12 C 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第二段中“Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing.”(然而,每天走10000步来保持健康的概念并非源于科学,而是源于营销。)可知,每天走10000步的概念实际上是一个营销策略。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.”(60岁以下的人确实应该每天走8000到10000步,以获得寿命方面的最佳效益。60岁以上的人走6000到8000步之间效益最大。)可知,Lee的研究发现,不同年龄段的步行目标步数不同。故选A。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.”(差别在于能源消耗。
根据最后一段“Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight.”(新的研究不再局限于死亡率,而是开始探讨步数如何有助于控制血压和体重。)可知,最新的研究将关注步数如何促进健康生活,包括控制血压和体重。故选D。

【答案】 As he dove into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. It struck endless energy and motivation into his body. His teeth clenched and his eyes fixed on the finish line forward. Suddenly, two figures whizzed past, which startled him. Fearing to fall behind, he felt his heart pounded frantically and his mind went blank. Just then, he thought of his sweat and his father’s encouraging smile.Gradually, his worry gave way to his confidence and the last 5 minutes saw him dash to the finish line, followed by the end of the race.
His jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else too.The flowers in his heart were already in bloom. His parents came up and gave him a high five, grinning from ear to ear. “Hey, why not try your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father, patting him on the shoulder. “Thanks, Dad, but I have given up the ice cream. It’s not such a lucky charm at all.” His eyes shone with wisdom. It was that day that Mike realized that one’s lucky charm was nothing but his diligence.
