Livestreaming (直播) is very popular these days, but have you watched livestreaming shows given by virtual (虚拟) hosts? They look like real people, but in fact, they’ re just digital characters created by AI companies.
Xmov is such an AI company in China. It has created lots of great digital humans. People talked about the company when it presented its latest high-technology products to more than 300 guests at a launch event (发布会) in Shanghai last year.

Also, the use of digital workers may lead to some safety problems if they’ re not well managed and controlled.

When the three children arrived at the tunnel, they looked up at the trees above it.
“What’s happening?” Peter said. “Look at the trees. They’re moving.”
He was right. The trees were sliding down the hill.
“It’s a landslide,” Roberta said. “There has been a lot of rain. The earth is soft. It is moving and bringing the trees with it.”
“They are going to fall on the railway line,” Phyllis said. “There’ll be an accident if the train hits them. We must stop the next train.”
“How do we do that?” Peter said. “The next train is arriving at 11:29. That’s in five minutes. And the train is only about fifteen kilometers away.”
“We can run towards the train and wave to the driver,” Phyllis said.
“He won’t think there is anything wrong,” Roberta said. “We always wave to him.”
“We need something red to wave,” Peter said. “Red is for danger.”
“My petticoat is red,” Phyllis said. “I’ll tear pieces off.”

“People may die if there is an accident,” Peter said. “Petticoats aren’t important.”

“Now we have red flags,” he said. “When we wave these, the engine driver will know something is wrong. He will stop the train and ask us what the matter is.”
The children ran through the tunnel and waited at the other side for the train to come. They had to wait for a long time. Peter thought the watch must be wrong, but it was the train that was late. Then, the train arrived. The children waved their flags. Roberta was so excited that she fainted (晕).
The engine driver saw the red flags and the children. He knew something was wrong. He stopped the train. Peter and Phyllis ran towards the engine. They shouted to the driver that there were trees on the line. The engine driver climbed down from his engine. He hurried to where Roberta was lying on the ground in a faint. Song won third place while his brother won sixth place in the Provincial Imperial Examination (科举考试). Later, Song and his brother took the National Imperial Examination, but they both failed.
In all, Song sat for the National Imperial Examination six times. Unluckily, he never achieved success. The Ming Dynasty ended in 1644, but Song and his brother refused to serve the Qing Dynasty. Song lived a poor life until he died. In his final years, he wrote many articles against the new dynasty.
Several years later, some Qing officials found these articles. They were so angry that they destroyed all of Song’s works. Luckily, the book Tiangong Kaiwu had already spread to many other countries, though it wouldn’t find its way back to China until the end of the Qing Dynasty.

The company is the first in China to create the virtual social media star named Ling, who is always seen in a traditional Chinese costume. In August 2023, the company also used a 3D AI host to show their new products to more than 300 guests at an event, which caused a heated discussion among people.
Now, many companies are using virtual hosts to sell their products through livestreaming. For one thing, it costs much less than building a traditional livestreaming room and team. For another, virtual hosts can work 24 hours a day. And tests have shown that they can do the job as well as human workers.
Virtual characters are expected to be used in more industries. In the near future, we may see them act as teachers, salespeople, guides and so on. It will not only reshape many industries, but also allow human workers to put more energy into creative work instead of doing boring tasks.
The AI technology is fantastic without doubt. But it can’t completely take humans’ place. For example, it will be difficult for digital humans to build trust with customers like real people.

“Mother will be angry if you do that,” Roberta said. “Petticoats are expensive.”
“People may die if there is an accident,” Peter said. “Petticoats aren’t important.”
Phyllis tore strips from the bottom of her petticoat,
“We need sticks to tie the strips to,” Peter said.
The children ran to a nearby tree. With his knife, Peter cut off three thin branches. He tied each of the strips of red petticoat to one of the branches.
