Arbeia Roman Fort (城堡) and Museum
Location and History
Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian’s Wall. It was the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been a World Heritage (遗产) Site. Built around AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers who were stationed along Hadrian’s Wall. The fort has been gradually uncovered and some original parts have been revealed. There are reconstructions that show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have looked.
The Reconstructions
The reconstructions of the Commanding Officer’s house and soldiers’ quarters are strikingly different. The accommodation for soldiers is dark and uncomfortable, while the Commanding Officer’s house is spacious and luxurious, with courtyards with fountains for him and his family to enjoy.
The Museum
Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time. You will see weapons, tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also discover how the Romans buried their dead and see tombstones (墓碑) which survive to this day. There is a “hands-on” area allowing visitors to dig on a certain site and study their findings with the help of museum staff. You can piece together pottery (陶器), or try writing just as the Romans would have done. For children, they can build this ancient Roman fort with building blocks by themselves.

In a golden field, a lion stands and bathed in the warmth of the sun. With a group of birds and a distant tower, the artwork is titled Lion and Beyond. This heartwarming creation is just one aspect of the imaginative world of Zhang Mingxiang, a 26-year-old grassroots artist from a village in Shandon g Province.
With a unique touch, Zhang’s artworks often draw thoughts from everyday moments and puns (双关语) based on Chinese pinyin. Because of his heartwarming descriptions, his creations have got more than 6 million followers on several social media platforms and sold more than 60,000 pieces on the video platform BiliBili.
However, Zhang’s path to art was not smooth. He was born in a village where his father made a living as a hairdresser and by renting out comic books (漫画书). Zhang’s interest in painting came from the pictures in those comic books. At the age of 6, Zhang began to teach himself to draw. He used red bricks (砖) to practice drawing on walls due to the lack of money. Despite facing difficulties, including a disability caused by an injury at the age of 11, Zhang was still crazy about drawing. “Today’s youths have their own thoughts and are good at expressing themselves. I believe my art is popular because people can see themselves in it. Many followers say my work speaks to them personally,” Zhang said.
Zhang’s life also got improved by selling paintings. His dreams, however, are even bigger. “My goal is to share my works with more people. A cup of coffee before breakfast, is considered quite normal for many people, especially those who have to rise early for work. Some experts, however, have warned the morning habit could have an effect on your health.
Experts have warned the possible bad effects of drinking coffee on an empty stomach. Researchers from the University of Bath have advised making sure to line your stomach before drinking caffeine, which they say could greatly affect a person’s blood sugar control.
The study, the findings of which were published in the British Journal of Nutrition, was carried out on 29 healthy male and female volunteers, all of whom took part in three different overnight experiments.
In scene one, volunteers have a sugary drink after waking up from a normal, uninterrupted (不间断的) sleep. In scene two, they had the exact same drink after sleeping poorly, having been awoken every hour for five minutes each time. When it came to the third scene, volunteers drank a strong black coffee after waking up from an interrupted sleep and were also given a sugary drink half an hour later. Once all three experiments ended, researchers collected blood samples from each of the 29 volunteers and examined their blood sugar level.
It was found that interrupted sleep had no obvious important effect on a person’s blood sugar level when compared to uninterrupted sleep. A strong black coffee drank on an empty stomach, however, increased their blood sugar level to the sugary drink by about 50 percent.
Although further research is needed to better understand long-term risks, the final research result of the researchers is that drinking black coffee first thing before breakfast could actually have an important effect on a person’s blood sugar and metabolic (代谢) control after an interrupted night’s sleep.
9. What do experts suggest before you drink coffee?
A. Getting enough sleep. B. Having a sugary drink.
C. Eating something. D. Filling yourself up with food.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The volunteers’ sleep habits. B. The course of the experiments.
C. The purpose of the experiments. D. The volunteers’ blood sugar levels.
11. What can be inferred from the research result?
A. Normal sleep helps low blood sugar level.
B. A sugary drink is no good for an empty stomach.
C. Interrupted sleep has little effect on blood sugar level.
D. Male volunteers achieve uninterrupted sleep easily.
12. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Coffee’s key role in a health research
B. Coffee’s bad effect on human’s health
C. An experiment on the effect of coffee on sleep
D. A warning of drinking coffee before breakfast
C 10. B 11. C 12. D

Do you sometimes pay no attention to your mom while chatting with friends? If you are a teen, that’s fairly common. Researchers already knew that younger kids’ brains respond (反应) more strongly to their mom’s voice than to strangers’. But as kids turn teens, everything changes. “In teen years, we show the exact opposite of that,” says Daniel Abrams, a scientist who led a new research.
The researchers studied the brains of 7- to 16-year-old kids as they listened to things said by their mother or by unfamiliar women. The words were purely inane, such as teebudieshawlt, keebudieshawlt and peebudieshawlt. As the kids listened to such rubbish words, certain parts of their brains became active. This was especially true in brain regions that help them to detect rewards and pay attention. That’s exactly what it should be like.
The areas in the adolescent brain don’t stop responding to their mom. It’s just that the unfamiliar voices become more attractive and then are worthy of attention. “As kids grow up, they expand (扩大) their social connections way beyond their family. Their survival depends less and less on their mother’s support. They depend more and more on their friends and others at the same age as them,” says Leslie Seltzer, a scientist. “So their brains need to begin paying more attention to that wider world. The brain seems to adapt to new needs that come with teen years.”
“As a teen, you don’t know you’re doing this. You’re just being you: You’ve got your new friends and you want to spend time with them. You take more notice of these unfamiliar voices,” Abrams adds.
So while both teens and their parents may sometimes feel sad about missed messages, that’s okay. “This is how the teenager brain works, and there’s a good reason for it,” Abrams says.
13. What does the new research focus on?
A. The teenagers’ brain development.
B. The teens’ response to their mother’s voice.
C. The relationship between kids and their mothers.
D. The influence of mothers on their kids’ characters.
14. What does the underlined word “inane” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Abstract. B. Meaningless. C. Hard to tell. D. Impossible to read.
15. What is the author’s opinion on the change in teens’ social preferences?
A. It is confusing. B. It leads to failure in later life.
C. It is understandable. D. It reduces their brain activity.
16. In which part of a newspaper can we probably see the text?
A. Science. B. Lifestyle. C. Sports and fitness. D. Breaking news.
B 14. B 15. C 16. A

提到我们被技术包围且询问技术是否都是有益的,及下文“It’s a term used to describe the negative psychological effects that excessive or improper use of technology can bring. 提到一个术语来描述技术的负面影响,空处承上启下,需要一个句子引出这个术语,E选项“You could be facing a situation known as technostress.
上文“Technostress can be classified into several subtypes, such as techno-overload, techno-complexity, and techno-invasion. (技术压力可以分为几种亚型,如技术过载、技术复杂性和技术入侵。)”提到技术压力的不同类型,及下文“Technostress can have a significant impact on our well-being. (技术压力会对我们的健康产生重大影响。)”提到技术压力对我们健康的影响,空处承上启下,A选项中的“All of these subcategories”指代上文提到的几种技术压力类型,“can have a considerable influence on our health”与下文中的“have a significant impact on our well-being”相呼应。所以A选项“All of these subcategories can have a considerable influence on our health. (所有这些子类都会对我们的健康产生相当大的影响。)”承接了前一句关于不同种类的技术压力,并为接下来讨论其具体影响铺垫了基础,符合语境。故选A。
上文“Some may also notice physical symptoms like muscle tightness, which can result in headaches and neck pain.
故填that/which。
空白处在句子中作后置定语修饰名词a chance,chance to do sth. 故填to remember。
故填on。
故填a。
这是一个强调句,强调句的结构为“It is + 被强调部分 + that/who + 其他部分”,此处被强调部分是主语“the countless heroes defending the country with their youth and even their lives”,所以用it。故填it。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear teachers and fellow students,
Today, I am honored to talk about protecting the environment, a topic that concerns us all. Our planet faces severe challenges like air and water pollution, which harm our ecology and well-being. Protecting the environment is crucial for our survival and the future of our planet.
Every little effort counts. As students, we can start by reducing waste, recycling, and conserving energy. For example, we can use reusable bags instead of plastic ones, turn off lights when not in use and participate in tree-planting activities. Additionally, we can raise awareness among our friends and family about the importance of environmental protection.
Let us all take action today to ensure a sustainable future and reduce our environmental footprint. Together, we can make a difference!
Thank you!

It wouldn’t fly. It wouldn’t eat. What was wrong with it? I thought to myself as I glanced at the pigeon.
The bird was trembling, leaning against a small tub I had placed it in. It rested on a sheet of newspaper with some grains scattered on it, but the poor thing didn’t even seem to take note of it. Just as our eyes met — mine, dark brown; its fiery orange — the pigeon froze, and it puffed itself up in self-defense.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” I said softly, stroking the bird, but it kept its guard up. Its survival instincts (本能) were strong, no doubt, shaped by the world it had seen and the way people often treat animals.
“I have a lot of bird-friends,” I added and smiled at the bird, but it did nothing as well.
The pigeon was shaking. I found it earlier in the parking lot, seeking shelter under a motorcycle, trying to find comfort by the tire. It seemed healthy, had perfect wings, but didn’t fly for some reason. Was it exhausted? Heartbroken? Abandoned? It had a look in its eye that felt like it had given up. I thought to give it an opportunity to change its mind.
I convinced my parents to let me keep the bird at our place as I thought that was its only chance to survive the night. The plan after that was to release it in the morning, though I hoped if we could become friends and end up adopting it.
I have a soft spot for animals in my heart. When I was younger and my parents didn’t let me have a dog, I had all sorts of pets. I had a colony of ants once, and if you ask me, we had a unique bond. We had so much trust that I let them crawl over me. I was fine with spiders too and cared for jumping spiders, watching them hunt with fascination.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
So, giving up on this pigeon didn’t feel right.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, both my parents and I were woken up by the merry chirping of the pigeon.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So, giving up on this pigeon didn’t feel right. After all, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for animals. I prepared a warm and cozy corner in my room for it. Soft rags were carefully lined there, creating a comfortable nest. I talked to it softly, sharing stories of my other pets and the adventures we had together. I even played some gentle music, thinking it might soothe the bird. Gradually, the pigeon began to relax a bit, starting to peck at the grains and take small bites. It was a small step, but it gave me hope that it was beginning to trust me. As night fell and deepened, I took one last peek at the pigeon before drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, both my parents and I were woken up by the merry chirping of the pigeon. The sound was a delightful surprise, a sign that the bird was feeling more at ease. As we gathered in my room, the pigeon slightly spread its wings as if testing the air. It seemed to have regained some of its energy overnight. I placed a few more grains on the floor, and this time, the pigeon approached the food directly, suggesting that it was slowly regaining its trust in the world around it. Seeing this, my parents and I exchanged smiles with each other. By the afternoon, the pigeon had made its way to the window. With a sudden burst of energy, the pigeon spread its wings and flew away, leaving us with a heartwarming memory.

Opening Times and Getting There

Monday to Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm, Sunday 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Many of my paintings reflect my journey of overcoming difficulties,” he said. Zhang hopes to work with interesting brands to encourage more young people to go after their dreams.
4. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By telling a life story. B. By describing an artwork.
C. By referring to memories. D. By presenting natural scenery.
5. What is a special point of Zhang’s works?

7. What does the public probably think of Zhang’s works?

C. Imaginative. D. Competitive.
8. What message does Zhang’s story convey?
A. Facts speak louder than words. B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. A good beginning is half the battle. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

C It is understandable. D. It reduces their brain activity.
16. In which part of a newspaper can we probably see the text?
A. Science. B. Lifestyle. C. Sports and fitness. D. Breaking news.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

So, giving up on this pigeon didn’t feel right.
