[2021-2022山西省长治市第一中学高一下第五次练考]Rock and roll music developed in the United
States in the early 1950s.It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by
African American musicians.
Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music.Elvis Presley,Chuck Berry,Bob
Dylan, and the Beach Boys were the most popular rock and roll musicians and band in the early 1960s.
All were American. Then,in 1964,a new rock and roll group from England invaded America:the
Beatles.
Some people say the Beatles'music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and
roll forever.Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck
Berry. But the Beatles looked and sounded different from any musical group before them.
The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964 when all of the top five records in
America were by the Beatles. In 1967,they released an album called Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Band.It was one of the first "concept"albums. That is,all the songs were linked by a common story
or idea.
The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to become
popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one
of the few groups from the 1960s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965,the group recorded
one of its most famous songs,Satisfaction.
By the 1970s,rock and roll music had become known as rock music.Experts say rock music
regained some of the energy of early rock and roll.Bruce Springsteen and the E.Street Band became
popular with their album Born to Run.Springsteen's music was like the lively rock and roll music of the
early 1960s.Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and
the war in Vietnam.
1.Which is the main topic of this passage?
A.The history of American music.
B.The development of rock and roll music.
C.The famous rock and roll groups.
D.The new forms of rock and roll music.
2.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.The Beatles'music was as violent as an earthquake in America.
B.The Beatles looked different because an earthquake hit America.
C.The Beatles'music had a great effect on rock and roll music in America.
D.The Beatles'music was greatly influenced by American rock and roll music.
3.Whose songs were mainly about social problems like unemployment and war?
A.Elvis Presley's.B.Bob Dylan's.

[2021一2022河北省张家口市高-下期末]Beethoven,one of the world's most-loved composers,is
famous for his nine symphonies ()Before he died,he began a new symphony, but never finished
it.Computer scientists and musicians have now used artificial intelligence to finish his 10th Symphony.
Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he's probably best known for his nine

symphonies.A symphony is a long, grand piece of classical music, usually divided into four parts. The
four parts are often linked by "themes"-repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece together. When
Beethoven died in 1827,he had some ideas for a 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some
notes about the piece and a few "sketches"-short bits of written music.
In 2019,a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. To train an AI
to help with the symphony, the team tumned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form
the computer could understand.By feeding the program all of Beethoven's music, the AI could look for
patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he reused simple melodies (
all through a piece to create a theme,or how he moved between different parts of the symphony. Thus,it
would be much easier for the special team to finish Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music created
by the AI based on Beethoven's sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters.
No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts the Al made up.Finally,
the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two
years,but finally the team was able to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony.Not simply a melody,but
40 minutes of music for a full orchestra-a large group of musicians playing everything from instruments,
like violins,trumpets,flutes,drums,and piano.
1.What does the writer intend to do in paragraph 1?
A.To explain what artificial intelligence is.
B.To give readers a general idea of the text.
C.To tell readers how Beethoven is loved by people.
D.To show the reason for Beethoven's new symphony.
2.What is the goal of the special team?
A.To learn to play Beethoven's nine symphonies.
B.To feed all of Beethoven's symphonies into computer.
C.To try to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
D.To create a new piece of music based on the 10th Symphony.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The special team's great efforts paid off.
B.It was challenging for Al to complete the task.
C.Beethoven's sketches were too hard to figure out.
D.Al created simply a melody of Beethoven's 10th Symphony.
4.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A brochure.
B.A guide book.
C.A music review.
D.A news website.

[202l一2022四川省眉山市高-下期米]“What is the story of your piano?”a new friend asked over
dinner. My piano stays in a corner of the small living room."All pianos have stories,"she said.
Suddenly,my piano's story came flooding out of me fully formed as if I'd always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood.I studied with the recorder and moved to the violin, trumpet and
guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream,a dream my family could not afford.
I grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese
restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry.Despite our poor childhood,my siblings and I
were always fed with love.I can't remember which birthday it was when my mother spared the money to
buy me a doll.Of course,by then I'd outgrown wanting dolls. But she worked too hard to know that and I
never told her.I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift that was her loving me
enough to buy it for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school.I took piano lessons for
about a year before university forced me to stop.I had to make a decision:to work towards the more
practical goal of medical school or my love for music. Finally,I chose to stop piano lessons.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade-until my son was born.He showed an early
interest in music,so I put him in piano lessons.
I've come to realize that in pursuit of my career,I've let all personal pleasure fall away.Maybe it's
time to get that piano retuned again, this time for myself, before it's too late to enjoy.
Maybe that's something we all should do right now.
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So,what is the story of
your piano?
5.What do we know about the author from the first three paragraphs?
A.She was born into a musical family.
B.She refused to accept the doll as a gift.
C.She had a poor but happy childhood.
D.Her parents were too busy to care for her.
6.Why did the author stop piano lessons in her last year of high school?
A.Playing the piano was useless to her.
B.She couldn't afford piano lessons.
C.Her parents forced her to stop.
D.She faced academic and career pressure.

music,origin,biological
adaptation,cultural invention
[2021一2022北京市朝阳区高一下期末]
Where Did Music Come From?
Look anywhere and you'll find music.Without a single exception, every culture produces some form
of it.Yet music's origin remains one of the great secrets of human history.
The oldest known instruments are 42,000-year-old bone flutes discovered in caves in Germany.
Music surely appeared earlier, but the problem is that music doesn't fossilize and our brains don't
fossilize. With little hard evidence, scientists still discuss what evolutionary purpose music serves or
whether it serves any purpose at all.
For many years, music researchers have more or less settled into two camps:those who believe the
evolution of music is a biological adaptation, and those who believe it's a cultural invention. In the latter
argument, the music we love dearly is no more than "auditory cheesecake",as evolutionary scientist
Steven Pinker said.Rather than a biological adaptation in its own right, music is a pleasing byproduct of
other adaptations, like language."As far as biological cause and effect are concerned, music is useless,
Pinker said."Music could disappear from our mankind and the rest of our lifestyle would be absolutely
unchanged.”
Some found this conclusion too dismissive. After all,the capacity to make and enjoy music seems
rooted in each of us,just like other valuable adaptations."These days music is a profession, but even
ordinary people who never had a music lesson have implicit knowledge of the structure of the music of
their culture,"says Sandra Trehub,a scientist at the University of Toronto. What's more,Trehub studies
music sense in babies. They are strongly attracted to music, and they can even remember music months
after hearing it."You see these amazing abilities,"she says,"and you have to think that there is a
biological foundation for it."
That doesn't necessarily mean we evolved that foundation for music, but many scientists have offered
explanations for why we might have. Some argue music is a system for social relationships, helping us to
exist together in united,well-functioning groups.Another possibility is that music originates from the
relaxing sounds parents make to communicate with babies. Some researchers even argue that the earliest
form of music may have given rise to language itself.Others think that music and language share a
common ancestor.
Some have sought a way around the adaptation-invention difference.A musicologist Savage and his
group tell the difference between music (a cultural product)and musicality (a biological foundation that
allows us to create and appreciate music). This alone doesn't explain the final origin of music, but it does
allow room for both nature and nurture. They suggest that cultural music and biological musicality have
developed together,in a kind of "gene-culture evolution".
