For three decades, Camilleri, a Canadian fashion designer, had made a name for herself dressing A-listers. Her beautiful, delicate styles from leather, to evening wear, to custom other showed in the covers of the hottest magazines.
But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪者)in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community. “I had no idea that someone in a chair had any different clothing needs than you or I,” says the designer. “The world was my market because nobody had ever done this before.” In 2004 Camilleri opened a boutique (精品店) specially for people who use wheelchairs.
“Everything we do, the starting point is from a seated frame. So what happens when you’re sitting? What happens to the clothes? Where are they getting together?” Camilleri explains. “We literally had to recreate the patterns to accommodate a seated frame.”
Her custom creations have changed lives. Winkelaar has been in a wheelchair since a car accident two weeks before his fourth birthday. Until he met Camilleri, he lacked confidence in his appearance and was afraid of entering the clothing stores because he had trouble finding trousers that fit properly. Salah has spastic cerebral palsy (痉挛性脑瘫). She says clothing stores are always daunting places full of pieces out of reach. Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. Being able to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity.
“Camilleri’s pieces are now part of an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, and her success in a new rare market has not gone unnoticed in the mainstream fashion world. She is a truly brilliant technician. She puts fashion and confidence within reach of the disabled,” Canadian television personality and fashion critic Jeanne Beker says.
4. What drives Camilleri to open a boutique?
A. Seeking fame. B. Making a profit.
C. Providing service. D. Meeting a challenge.
5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4?
A. Inspiring. B. Frightening. C. Striking. D. Comforting.
6. What message does Beker want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Camilleri is a highly original thinker.
B. Camilleri is a productive market advisor.
C. Camilleri is a critical technician leader.
D. Camilleri is a successful fashion innovator.
7. Which of the following can best describe Camilleri?
A. Caring and visionary. B. Ambitious and hardworking.
C. Creative and stubborn. D. Determined and conventional.

Humor plays a great role in helping one deal with stress, anger, fear, anxiety and other difficult emotions. Sometimes, that means purposefully shoring up defenses against hard times to come. Other times it can mean laughing when you want to cry, or cracking an illogical joke when it feels like the sky is falling and Earth is on fire.
To psychologists, humor is an unconscious coping mechanism, a kind of strategic behavior or thought. Not all of these strategies are beneficial: Drinking or overeating, for example, are more dangerous coping mechanisms, whereas humor taps creativity into stress, which can enable a viewpoint shift and block distressing emotions.
And of course, there’s the physical reaction of humor: laughter. With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance. “The stress is there; you just don’t feel it as much,” says psychologist Sultanoff.
Of course, humor isn’t foolproof: Making the wrong joke in the wrong way is just as likely to increase stress and disconnection. Mean-spirited or disparaging (贬低的) humor actually causes people to be further apart and increases division.
“Humor can arise during stress without cause or effort to make it. But humor can also be played consciously,” Sultanoff says, adding that he sometimes travels with a clown nose to find fun in life’s everyday routine. “Joyful use of humor builds psychological antibodies (抗体),” he says.
But taking up the power of humor doesn’t mean ignoring the negatives. The point is not to never feel difficult emotions. “Stress is there for a reason, and it’s to call your attention to a problem that needs to be solved,” Sultanoff says. “When you experience a negative emotion like sadness or anger or frustration, it’s important to recognize why that’s there.” Turning to humor too soon may prevent someone from processing emotions in a healthy way, increasing stress rather than decreasing it. “By expressing humor you give yourself a break. And we all need a little break,” Sultanoff says.
8. How is humor helpful as a coping mechanism?
A. It prevents hard times coming. B. It means an emotional release.
C. It generates positive mindsets. D. It inspires artistic creativity.
9. Why does the author talk about laughter?
A. To correct a misunderstanding. B. To illustrate an effect of humor.
C. To distinguish humor from it. D. To warn the danger of stress.
10. Which of the following is called disparaging humor in paragraph 4?
A. Making your friend look stupid. B. Telling a story in a funny way.
C. Wearing clown clothes at a party. D. Laughing at your own mistakes.
11. What does Sultanoff think of a difficult emotion?
A. It’s something we should avoid. B. It’s a reminder of our problems.
C. It draws our attention to humor. D. It gives us a break from routine.

A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has developed a new fuel cell that harvests energy from microbes (微生物) living in dirt. About the size of a standard paperback book, the soil-powered technology could fuel underground sensors used in modern agriculture and green infrastructure. This could potentially offer a sustainable, renewable alternative to batteries that release harmful chemicals into the ground.
To test the new fuel cell, the researchers used it to power sensors measuring soil condition and detecting touch, a capability that could be valuable for tracking passing animals. To enable wireless communications, the researchers also equipped the soil-powered sensor with a tiny antenna to transmit (传输) data to a neighboring base station by reflecting existing radio frequency signals. Not only did the fuel cell work in both wet and dry conditions, but its power also outlasted similar technologies by 120%.
The research was published on Jan. 12 in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
“The number of electronic devices used in modern agriculture as a way to improve crop productions is constantly growing,” said Northwestern’s Bill Yen, who led the work. “If we imagine a future with numerous devices like these, we cannot build every one of them out of lithium (锂) and heavy metals that are dangerous to the environment. We need to find alternatives that can provide low amounts of energy to power a widespread network of devices.”
In a search for solutions, the researchers turned to soil microbial fuel cells(MFC), which use special microbes to break down soil and generate a low amount of energy to power sensors. As long as there is organic carbon in the soil for the microbes to break down, the fuel cell can potentially last forever.
“These microbes are common; they already live in soil everywhere,” said Northwestern’s George Wells, a senior author of the study. “We can use very simple engineered systems to collect their electricity. We’re not going to power entire cities with this energy, but we can collect tiny amounts of energy to fuel practical, low-power applications.”
The researchers plan to develop a soil-based MFC made from fully biodegradable (生物可降解的) materials as their next step.
12. What can we know from the new fuel cell?
A. It was not limited by soil conditions.
B. The power it produced increased by 20%.
C. It was made from fully biodegradable materials.
D. It will completely replace conventional batteries soon.
13. What can we infer from Bill Yen’s words in paragraph 4?
A. Electronic devices are widely used in industries.
B. It is essential for our environment to develop the new fuel cell.
C. Lithium and heavy metals are dangerous to the environment.
D. Current electronic devices can’t provide large amounts of energy.
14. What is George Wells’ attitude toward the fuel cell?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Pessimistic. D. Approving.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Conventional Batteries Are Giving Way to New Fuel Cell.
B. Microbes Can Break Down Soil and Generate Energy.
C. New Fuel Cell Harvests Energy from Microbes in Soil.
D. New Fuel Cell Fuels Underground Sensors in Agriculture.

As we all know, not all thoughts are welcome. Intrusive (入侵的) thoughts often emerge as unwanted visitors, disrupting our minds. They are involuntary and unwanted mental ideas or urges that pop into our minds without invitation. ____16____.
Most people experience intrusive thoughts from time to time. For example, if someone is driving, they might have an urge to drive off a bridge. Most people know they would never do such things and don’t pay much attention to them. ____17____. And they worry that these thoughts will come true or cause them to do something terrible. This can lead to them performing compulsions (强制行为) to try and reduce their anxiety.
Fortunately, there are strategies to deal with intrusive thoughts.
Accept them. Accept and allow the thoughts into your mind. ____18____. Try to just observe them and allow time to pass. Remember that intrusive thoughts are normal, and just having a thought doesn’t make it come true.
____19____. We know it’s difficult sometimes! Developing a sympathetic mindset toward yourself can do so much against unwanted thoughts, though. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a friend going through a similar struggle.
Stay present. The more present you are in the “here and now”, the less power you’re giving to these nagging fears and negative thoughts. You can try some grounding exercises, such as focusing on your breath. ____20____.
A. Love yourself
B. Don’t try to push them away
C. Never be too hard on yourself
D. However, some people become troubled by their intrusive thoughts
E. They can be anything that a person finds inconsistent with their values
F. That can help bring your attention back and break the cycle of intrusive thoughts
G. People who have such terrible experiences may be easy to have intrusive thoughts

So I think sometimes what we hear, see, or even know might not be the whole picture. The truth might be _____30_____ from us, requiring us to notice and discover it. We could start by asking ourselves whether we are _____31_____ more on negative or positive stories and whether we are letting negative news surround us. Maybe even paying more attention to good news or _____32_____ sharing good news will help.
Anna’s attitude was remarkable. She _____33_____ the call of duty and, upon leaving, _____34_____ to accept anything but words as thanks.

I flew through the back door, excitedly announcing to my mom, “Mom, I’ve been nominated (提名) for the National Junior Honor Society!” My mother smiled with pride and replied, “I’m so proud of you, honey.”
Together in the family room, I began filling out the application for the Honor Society. It required proof of possessing all the necessary candidate characteristics. The following day, I submitted the paperwork to my advisor and didn’t give it much further thought.
Months passed, and one afternoon, as soon as I stepped off the bus, I rushed home with a letter from the school regarding the Honor Society. “Mom,” I said, handing her the letter with tears welling up in my eyes, “I didn’t make it. They didn’t choose me.” My mother hugged me and said, “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. There must have been some kind of mistake.”
That night at dinner, I said sadly, “It’s not fair.” My mother agreed and then shared a story about her high school friend who was intelligent and kind-hearted but never made the National Honor Society. Despite his hurt and anger, he became a world-renowned lung cancer specialist, saving lives every day.
I grasped my mom’s message: not being part of the Honor Society wouldn’t define my future, but it was certainly painful in the moment. However, seeing most of my friends get selected made those weeks especially tough for me. I opened up to my parents about how difficult it was and declared, “This shouldn’t happen to anyone else.” We brainstormed ways to improve the selection process and arranged a meeting with the school principal (校长) to present our ideas.
