Yuan Long ping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”, was one of China’s most famous scientists. Yet, he considered himself a farmer because he continually worked the land in his research. Indeed, his slim but strong body was just like that of millions of Chinese farmers, to whom he had devoted his life.
Yuan Long ping was born in 1930 in Beijing. His parents wanted him to pursue a career in science or medicine. However, what concerned him most was that farmers often had poor harvests and sometimes even had a serious shortage of food to eat. To tackle this crisis, he chose to study agriculture and received an education at Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing.
After graduating in 1953, he worked as a researcher. Yuan Long ping realized that larger fields were not the solution. Instead, farmers needed to boost yields in the fields they had. How this could be done was a challenging question at the time. Yuan was convinced that the answer could be found in the creation of hybrid rice. A hybrid is a cross between two or more varieties of a species. One characteristic of hybrids is that they usually attain a higher yield than conventional crop. However, whether it was possible to develop a hybrid of self-pollinating plants such as rice was a matter of great debate. The common assumption then was that it could not be done. Through intense effort, Yuan overcame enormous technical difficulties to develop the first hybrid rice that could be used for farming in 1974. This hybrid enabled farmers to expand their output greatly.
Today, it is estimated that about 60 percent of domestic rice consumption in China is comprised of crops generated from Yuan’s hybrid strains, and his strains have allowed China’s farmers to produce around 200 million tons of rice per year. Yuan’s innovation has helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend on rice as well, such as India and Vietnam. Because of his invaluable contributions, Yuan Long ping had received numerous awards both in China and abroad.
Given that Yuan’s hybrids had made him quite wealthy, one might think he would retire to a life of leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Yuan was still very much a farmer at heart. As a man of the soil, he cared little for celebrity or money. Instead, he made large donations to support agricultural research.
What impressed people most about Yuan Long ping was his ongoing ability to fulfil his dreams. Long ago, he envisioned rice plants as tall as sorghum, with each ear of rice as big as a broom, and each grain of rice as huge as a peanut. He succeeded in producing a kind of rice that could feed more people at home and abroad. His latest vision for “seawater rice” had also become a reality, and potentially opened up nearly one million square kilometers of salty land in China for rice production. Despite his advanced years, Yuan Long ping was still young at heart and full of vision, and everyone was always to see what he would dream up next.

C
The French author Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin once wrote, “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Put more simply, this means “You are what you eat.” Most people today relate this saying to healthy eating. However, Brillat-savarin was actually referring to our personality, character, and culture.
Certainly, in many ways this seems to be true. America’s most popular Chinese dish is General Tso’s chicken, which consists of fried chicken covered in a sweet sauce, favoured with hot red peppers. This is probably not an authentic Chinese recipe, however, so it cannot tell us much about the Chinese. On the other hand, it does tell us a lot about Americans. It tells us, for example, that Americans love bold, simple flavour. And since the dish was also invented recently, it tells us that Americans are not afraid to try new foods.
Later, I had a chance to experience authentic Chinese food by coming to China. A Sichuan restaurant had been recommended to us by a friend, we had no idea how to order, so the chef just began filling our table with the best food we had ever eaten. With this, we had the pleasure of experiencing an entirely new taste: Sichuan peppercorns. The food was wonderful and different, but what was even more important was the friendship offered us.
We soon moved to Shandong Province in the eastern part of North China. My favourite dish there was boiled dumplings served with vinegar. I observed that family is important to the people there. It has become a favourite traditional dish of the people in North China, where making dumplings has always been a family affair with everyone — from the youngest to the oldest — joining in to help. Later, I learned that the most famous food in Shandong is pancake rolls stuffed with sliced Chinese green onions.
Then we moved to northern Xinjiang. Some of our friends were Kazak and Inner Mongolian. Our travels then took us to South China, and then on to central China. Everywhere, the food was as varied as the people. However, one thing is always true: Through food, Chinese people everywhere show friendship and kindness.
8. What does the author say about General Tso’s chicken in America?
A. It is an authentic Chinese recipe. B. It shows that Americans prefer mild flavors.
C. It is a dish invented recently. D. It is the most unpopular Chinese dish in America.
9. What can be inferred from the experience of having Sichuan food in Beijing?
A. The author could read Chinese menus well.
B. The chef was not friendly to the author’s family.
C. The taste of Sichuan peppercorns was not new to the author.
D. The author’s family felt the warmth of friendship besides enjoying the food.
10. In Shandong Province, what is special about making dumplings?
A. Only the elderly are allowed to make them. B. It is a family activity that everyone participates in.
C. It is usually done by professional chefs. D. It is only for special festivals.
11. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. To show how food reflects the culture and friendship in China.
B. To introduce Chinese cuisines and Chinese people.
C. To compare American food with Chinese food.
D. To describe the author’s travel experiences in China.
D
What will restaurants look like in the future? What would your dinner taste like if a robot cooked it? A robot restaurant in Tianjin may give you the answers.
Covering an area of over 400 square meters with a total of 112 seats, the X Future Restaurant is a robot restaurant opened in November 2018. The restaurant has amazed customers with its fully-automated (全自动的) technology, which covers every step of the dining experience, from ordering to cooking to serving the dishes and even taking payment.
Entering the restaurant, one can order dishes by simply scanning (扫描) the QR codes on the table. There are over 40 choices of dishes. After taking the order, “robot cooks” prepare dishes using fixed time, temperature and ingredients designed by famous Chinese cooks.
“As the cooking is controlled by a computer system, the taste and quality of dishes can be good,” said Li Xiaokui, manager of the X Future Restaurant.
Robots also complete the delivery of dishes. Without following any designed route, the robot waiters serve meals thanks to automated driving technology, which helps each robot timely change its route when something is in the way.
These eye-catching technologies have received wide praise from customers. “The dishes taste surprisingly good. I couldn’t believe that they were made by robots, especially dishes that were difficult to cook” one customer said. “The application of robots has increased our efficiency (效率) and cut down our costs,” Li said, “I think robot restaurants will develop fast and have a bright future.”
12. What do we know about the X Future Restaurant?
A. It covers over 112 square meters with 400 seats.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want!

【答案】 Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.
