In her tiny but cozy Athens apartment, a 93-year-old Greek woman whose name is Ioanna Matsouka has knit thousands of brightly coloured scarves for children in shelters from Greece to Ukraine — and she has no plans to quit just yet. “I will continue knitting until I die, and it brings me joy to share my creations,” Matsouka declared, her knitting needles clicking rhythmically through her skilled fingers. Since she accidentally took up knitting in the early 1990s, Matsouka has crafted over 3,000 scarves.
In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. An old, self-knitted patchwork (拼布) blanket is thrown casually over the sofa where she spends her days. Initially, the scarves were gifts for friends. As the stock grew, they were donated to children’s shelters across Greece. Then they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. Sadly, Matsouka’s vision is impaired and she suffers from bouts of severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Despite this, Matsouka still keeps knitting one scarf a day, with small imperfections. Every morning, she wakes up, drinks a glass of warm milk, puts on her pearl earrings and quietly gets to work till a break for lunch and a nap.

Every morning I’m almost guaranteed to wake up and read some climate news that screams disaster — a terrifying wildfire, a devastating flood or yet another report that says we’re past a tipping point. The round-the-clock disastrous environmental news weighs me down constantly.
If you’ve noticed the same, you are not alone. But all that constant stream of depressing news about the environment can get in the way of taking action. That’s because those headlines can lead us to believe that there is little an individual can do about climate change, when in fact that’s not the case. But staying motivated to make individual changes is hard when you’re feeling low.
That’s why one of my colleagues and I have come up with what we call a “happy climate approach”. It’s our way of talking about the behavioral changes we have identified that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide a greater sense of hope, appreciation, gratitude or fulfillment in our daily lives.
Now I’ve cut my driving from 8,000 kilometers a year down to 2,700 kilometers by working from home most of the time. Not only does this save emissions, but it also gives me more free time, which has been shown to promote happiness. I also choose to walk or bike everywhere I can. While it’s true that walking or biking can take more time than driving, these more active forms of transportation provide moderate physical exercise, which can also elevate mood.
And there’s a simple rule that I use to stay in a good mental state. For every piece of bad climate news I encounter, I make sure to read at least one positive article on the climate. To prevent myself from constantly scrolling through disheartening news, I’ve adjusted my newsfeed (新闻推送) so that I can see positive climate news on a regular basis, which brings me joy and hope.
I know we’re a long way from reversing the impacts of climate change. But at least with this approach, I don’t dread getting out of bed, reaching for my phone and reading the news.

When you listen to music, it’s not just your ears that are engaged. The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and memory also become active. The hippocampus (海马体), essential for memories, works closely with the amygdala (杏仁体), the brain’s emotional center. This explains why some songs are both memorable and emotional. Given music’s ability to evoke emotions and trigger memories, we supposed it could alter the emotional content of existing memories, through the process of memory reactivation.
To test this, we conducted a three-day experiment. On the first day, participants memorized neutral stories. The next day, they recalled the stories while listening to positive, negative music, or in silence, with fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) scans recording their brain activity. On the final day, they recalled the stories without music. The results were remarkable. When recalling neutral stories, participants listening to emotionally charged music were more likely to add new emotional elements into the story that matched the mood of the music.
The brain scans from the experiment were even more interesting. When participants recalled stories with music, there was increased activity in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is why a song associated with a significant life event can feel so powerful — it activates both emotion-and memory-processing regions at the same time. We also observed strong communication between these emotional memory processing areas of the brain and the areas involved in visual sensory processing. This suggests that music might add emotional details into memories while participants are visually imagining the stories.
Our findings indicate that music serves as an emotional lure (诱饵), becoming intertwined with memories and subtly altering their emotional tone. For people dealing with conditions such as depression or PTSD (创伤后应激障碍), where negative memories can be overwhelming, carefully chosen music might help reconstruct those memories in a more positive light and potentially reduce their negative emotional impact over time. It also paves new paths for exploring music-based interventions in the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.

That’s because those headlines can lead us to believe that there is little an individual can do about climate change, when in fact that’s not the case. But staying motivated to make individual changes is hard when you’re feeling low.
That’s why one of my colleagues and I have come up with what we call a “happy climate approach”. It’s our way of talking about the behavioral changes we have identified that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide a greater sense of hope, appreciation, gratitude or fulfillment in our daily lives.
Now I’ve cut my driving from 8,000 kilometers a year down to 2,700 kilometers by working from home most of the time. Not only does this save emissions, but it also gives me more free time, which has been shown to promote happiness. I also choose to walk or bike everywhere I can. While it’s true that walking or biking can take more time than driving, these more active forms of transportation provide moderate physical exercise, which can also elevate mood.
And there’s a simple rule that I use to stay in a good mental state. For every piece of bad climate news I encounter, I make sure to read at least one positive article on the climate. To prevent myself from constantly scrolling through disheartening news, I’ve adjusted my newsfeed (新闻推送) so that I can see positive climate news on a regular basis, which brings me joy and hope.
I know we’re a long way from reversing the impacts of climate change. But at least with this approach, I don’t dread getting out of bed, reaching for my phone and reading the news.

When you listen to music, it’s not just your ears that are engaged. The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and memory also become active. To test this, we conducted a three-day experiment. On the first day, participants memorized neutral stories. On the final day, they recalled the stories without music. The results were remarkable. When recalling neutral stories, participants listening to emotionally charged music were more likely to add new emotional elements into the story that matched the mood of the music.
The brain scans from the experiment were even more interesting. When participants recalled stories with music, there was increased activity in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is why a song associated with a significant life event can feel so powerful — it activates both emotion-and memory-processing regions at the same time. We also observed strong communication between these emotional memory processing areas of the brain and the areas involved in visual sensory processing. This suggests that music might add emotional details into memories while participants are visually imagining the stories.
Our findings indicate that music serves as an emotional lure (诱饵), becoming intertwined with memories and subtly altering their emotional tone.
