But what if some- thing unusual happens? That􀆳s what I experienced one evening in May 2024 on my way home from work. As I was riding my bike home in the evening, I saw a big scruffy (邋遢的) dog. It looked sad, simply sitting in the middle of the road by a pedestrian crossing(人行横道). Nobody seemed to mind the dog, either. At first, I also crossed over to the other side, hoping that somebody else would care for the dog. However, realizing that the dog might suddenly get up and walk into traffic, I decided I must do something to help it. When the light changed, I saw my opportunity. I used my bike to guide the dog to a street corner, blocking the way to keep it safe. Slowly, I was able to encourage the dog to keep walking until finally, we both made it to the sidewalk. I called a stray- animal(流浪动物) home to let them know about the dog. However, by the time I turned to it again, the dog was gone. Sometimes we don􀆳t know what we will find or see in our daily life. Still, what matters is how we react(反应) to them. Although I am normally shy in these situations, I am glad I found the courage to help a dog in need. 1. When did the writer meet the scruffy dog? 2. How did the writer react at the first sight of the dog? 3. What does the writer want to tell us through his experience? 4. What will you do when you see a stray animal on the street? Why? Write 30 words or more. Passage 2 Today Linda had an interesting Chinese class. Her teacher taught them many idioms, which are called chengyu in Chinese. And behind them, there were different kinds of educational stories. Through these stories, people could learn something meaningful and change their bad behavior. Among these stories, Linda had a deep impression(印象) on the one called Honour the Teacher and Respect His Teaching (chengmenlixue). She wrote the story in her diary. Here is the story: Honour the Teacher and Respect His Teaching In the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a jinshi named Yang Shi, a great scholar (学者 ) in ancient times. He especially liked studying and learning. He often visited teachers and friends to seek knowledge. Yang Shi once went to visit his teacher, Cheng Yi. The teacher was asleep when he arrived there. At that moment, the snowflakes (雪花) were flying over his head and it was very cold. Yang Shi was just at the gate, waiting for his teacher for fear that he would influence the teacher􀆳s rest. When the teacher woke up, the snow under Yang Shi􀆳s feet had been very deep. The teacher was so moved by his spirit. From this story I know that to study well, we must be humble (谦虚的) enough to learn from our teachers, and respect others and never give up halfway. 1. Give an example of how you respected your teachers at school. Write 30 words or more. Passage 3 Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence ( 智 力 ) and feelings. In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the US. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. People in these states have more heart trouble when the weather changes in February or March. The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools in the United States often get worse in exams in the hot months of the year (July and August) . Weather also has a strong influence on people􀆳s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather, too. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger. Low air pressure may make people have a poor memory. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. Are you feeling sad, tired, or forgetful today? It may be the weather􀆳s problem. 1. When do the students in the US often get worse in exams? 2. Why may winter be a bad time for thin people? 3. Which phrase has the similar meaning with “ forgetful” in Paragraph 6? 4. What kind of weather don􀆳t you like? Why? Write 30 words or more. To protect this world-famous classic, Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty ordered a rerecording of it. The copying work took five years to finish. But hand- copied books have been gradually lost over the long period of history. The Chinese government promised to put greater efforts into digitizing ( 数 字 化 ) ancient books and encouraged libraries to open their collections for the public. This action certainly made the Chinese culture in ancient books “alive”. Similarly, the Siku Quanshu, a collection of Chinese classical works, is being digitized in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. Created in the Qing Dynasty, Siku Quanshu had seven copies. But now, only three and a half copies remain. To bring them closer to the public, digitization efforts began in 2021 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Ancient books are important to China in carrying on its cultural traditions and improving its cultural power. At the same time, they can also be used for researching and the development of cultural products. 1. What fields does the Yongle Dadian include? 2. How many words are there in the Yongle Dadian? 3. Where can we find digitized Siku Quanshu? 4. What do you think of the idea of digitizing ancient books? Why? Write 30 words or more. Passage 5 【2024 鞍山三模】 Microplastics are very small plastic pieces. They are less than 0.5 cm in diameter(直径). These tiny pieces are formed in two main ways. The first is that they are made on purpose. For example, tiny plastic pieces are often added to toothpaste ( 牙 膏). In the other way, bigger pieces of plastics break up into smaller pieces and become microplastics. Countless microplastics enter the sea. They can be eaten by sea animals of all sizes. When the animals􀆳 stomachs are filled with plastics, they do not feel hungry and do not eat food. Some animals will even lose their lives. Some tiny plastic pieces have been traveling through the sea for a long time! They can act like little sponges(海绵) and take in harmful chemicals. Through the food chain, these chemicals can easily end up in human bodies. A recent study found that these chemicals can influence how hormones(激素) work in our bodies. This is bad for our health. What can we do to cut down on microplastic pollution? Scientists are working on “green” materials to take the place of plastics. In our daily life, we can cut down on the use of plastics. For example, we can bring our own shopping bags instead of using single-use plastic bags. 1. How many main ways are there to form micro- plastics? 2. Where do the harmful chemicals in microplastics end up at last? 3. What are scientists doing to take the place of plastics? 4. What is your method for cutting down on plastic pollution? Here is a great way: send your father your very own thank- you card! It shows you􀆳ve chosen the card carefully just for him. In Britain, thank-you cards are traditional. And they are not just for special days. You can send a thank-you card to your friends. If you know the person very well, you can even send the message with a kiss. When you grow up and begin to find a job, a thank-you card is also important. No matter whether you can get a job, writing a thank-you note by card sometimes has magic power. It helps you stand out (突出) among other people. In a world full of smartphones and e-mails, sending a message is easy and fast. But taking your time to write the words “thank you” adds something important to the message. Because these two special words remind the person you care. How to write a thank-you note Step 1:Greeting. “Dear ( name)” is often used. “Hi” is also OK. Step 2:Thank you for the first time. A short sentence about thanking the giver, such as “Thanks for the great birthday gift” . Step 3:The details (细节). Describe the thing, explaining what makes it special. Step 4:Thank you for the second time. A sentence that says thanks again. Step 5:Closing and signature(签名). Say “with love” or “ best wishes”. Then sign your name. 1. What can you give to your father on Father􀆳s Day according to the text? 2. Where can you often see thank-you cards? 3. Why do you write the words “ thank you” on the card according to Paragraph 4? 4. Who would you like to write a thank-you card to? Why? Write 30 words or more. Passage 7 My elder sister, as a busy modern person with lots of plans and work, just couldn􀆳t imagine not being in touch with the rest of the world. Keeping in touch with other people is a big part of her life, however, sometimes it bothers(困扰) her so much. One day I discovered she was terribly upset. She tried turning off message notifications(通知). But the fear of missing out something important made her check the phone more often than before, and then she simply stopped using her phone. It was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, she told me that she had a big fear that all of her friends would soon forget about her. Besides, when she had a free moment, she had no idea what to do. However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing her changes. For example, I found she became much more focused: Now, while doing something, she never wonders what is going on online like before. Also, she told me she discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Passage 8 New Dragon Gate Inn, a new Yueju Opera production, has become a hit among young people since its first performance in March, 2023. According to reports, tickets for the performances of the opera in December were sold out within two minutes. On second-hand platforms, the price of tickets even rose to 6,666 yuan from an original price of 399 yuan. The opera is performed by Xiaobaihua, a Yueju Opera troupe(剧团) from Zhejiang Province. It draws inspiration ( 灵 感 ) from the film New Dragon Gate Inn in 1992. Why is the opera so popular? One reason is the fascinating experience it offers. The audience(观众) sits very close to the performers. They can communicate with the performers and even take part in scenes as the story goes on. “The stage seems to disappear. Everyone is part of the performance,” said Chen Lijun, who plays an important role in the opera. Another reason is the use of short video platforms, which are popular among young people. With their help, more young people get interested in the opera. And more importantly, the members of the troupe pay attention to every detail to make the opera successful. Take Chen for example. These future schools will use high technology to help students learn more quickly as well as bring convenience to teachers. A university in Canada has built the first 5G smart campus(校园) in the country. A high-tech company helped to build a 5G network across the schoolyard. This made it easy for everyone to use the smart system. In the UK, Staffordshire University made an AI robot called Beacon. It is like a personal helper for students and it􀆳s very popular at school. The students can ask it questions and it can answer them as a real teacher. The smart system can be a big help in the classroom. It can change the brightness according to the environment. With longer strings(弦) than many other musical instruments, the guqin can produce rich tones(音调). Bringing traditional musical instruments to life is a tradition in Wu Wenguang􀆳s family. Wu Wenguang is a 78-year-old inheritor (继承者) of the guqin. He not only perfects his musical skills but also works hard to keep guqin music alive. Wu said guqin music was often written in simple words. Although some words were given to describe how to play the seven strings, there were no instructions on how fast or slow to play it. So even if there were about 3,000 ancient songs for guqin music, different musicians had different understandings, according to Wu. To keep guqin music alive, Wu and his father Wu Jinglüe(1907~1987), who was also good at playing the guqin, recreated more than 100 ancient pieces. Besides ancient guqin songs, Wu has also changed music works of today and put them into his performances to increase the popularity of guqin music. “More and more young people grow to love guqin playing with a new wave of interest in the nation􀆳s traditional culture,” said Wu Ye, Wu􀆳s daughter, also an inheritor of the guqin. Passage 14 Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. This is an old English saying. It means that we should go to bed early at night and get up early in the morning. If we do so, we shall be healthy. Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. Children of your age need ten hours􀆳 sleep every night. If you go to bed late, you can􀆳t have enough sleep. Then you can􀆳t think carefully and your homework will be wrong. You will not be wise! Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is not good for them. We should sleep when it is dark. The dark helps us sleep well. When the daylight comes, we should get up. This is the time for exercise. If the body is not used, it will become weak. Exercise keeps it strong. Exercise helps the blood to move around inside the body. Blood takes nutrition(营养) to all parts of our bodies. The brains in our heads also need blood. We think with our brains. Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. Although it sounds strange, there􀆳s science behind the act of tree- hugging. It can be explained by the “ biophilia hypothesis(亲生命假说)”. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. According to him, humans are born to love being around other living things. Human􀆳s love for nature is “ in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural and green views to city views. Some studies have looked into why tree- hugging can help with our health. A study reported that the activity could increase oxytocin(催产素). It􀆳s a hormone (荷尔蒙) responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin. Another hormone called cortisol(皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut down cortisol production, which makes us feel better. Although the activity is helpful to us, it􀆳s important that we shouldn􀆳t hurt nature. Trees often hold valuable ecosystems(生态系统). The tree is home to many small living things that are too small to be seen. You should be kind when hugging trees, just like how you hug a friend! 1. It tells a story of a mother raising her four daughters, while their dad is away fighting a war. Meg, the eldest, wants to live a better life very much. Jo, the second-born, wants nothing more than to be a writer. Beth is a sweet girl who loves music and always brings joy to others. The youngest daughter, Amy, dreams of being an artist. After reading Little Women, I have a feeling of warmth and kindness from the family. In the following scene, the girls talk about what they can buy with the very little money they have. They feel hopeful about the future even though their dreams may not come true.
