HEARING HAS CHANGED
Record number of long-time hearing aid wearers are astonished to find new direct-to-you hearing aids priced between $549 and $629, outperform their “thousands-of-dollars” devices. Delivered directly to you, with no appointments or hearing tests required, they are ready to use right away with the simple press of a button.
“Having trialled four different sets of hearing aids from two audiology centres without complete satisfaction, I ordered two Jaspa 3 hearing aids. I could hardly believe how much more natural sounding the Jaspa aids were in comparison to the very expensive aids I had trialled. It is so small that people around me don’t even notice I’m wearing a hearing aid. I’m now wearing them each day as required and find them very good.” — Aaron
“Received this afternoon. Couldn’t believe the speed of delivery, well done guys. These aids are so simple yet effective. From first trying, I am sitting here with a smile all over my face. The TV is on, and I can actually hear it very clearly. As a user, until now, of the free government supplied hearing aids and of having put up with them for four years there is just no comparison, yours leave them for dead.” — Peter
“My mother was about to spend $5000+ on a hearing aid so I got a Jaspa 3 after reading some reviews. My mother is delighted with the device and we can now have a decent conversation without having to constantly apologise or guessing whether to say yes or no.” —— Zoran

My three boys were infatuated (迷恋) with building blocks as children, and my husband would play with them, teaching the concept of a “stable base”. But I was the one alone with the kids day after day, enduring soul-crushing afternoons on the floor of the playroom. I remember when the boys were about 3, 7 and 8, feeling like it was an eternity until my husband would get home, and I was thinking: “Lego again? Didn’t we just do this yesterday?” Those hours seemed to go on forever.
Of the three, my middle child, Aaron, was the one I couldn’t always understand. We moved from Ohio to the Bay Area. He’d always been change averse. He was unhappy, wailing for days like King Lear in the storm: “Why is everything different?”
So how did Aaron find his balance? Aaron continued building with Lego even as his peers outgrew it. In middle school, he found an online group of enthusiasts who shared designs. By high school, he had discovered the “adult fans of Lego” community. During college, he started accepting commission(委托) work. After graduating, he continued with larger and better-paying commissions, cobbling (拼凑) together a burgeoning career. A few years after he graduated, he was hired by Lego. He and his wife now live in Billund, Denmark.
Last fall, when Aaron and I went to the Lego store at Rockefeller Center, I felt like I got a glimpse into the center of his soul. We saw sets he’d designed, and he told me about fellow designers. I realize the concept of the “stable base” that my husband taught him all those years ago has become a metaphor for Aaron’s life: Lego is where he feels the most calm, happy and competent. He needs things to make sense in the way Lego makes sense.
The time has gone too fast. I have a new and profound connection to Aaron. When I dump out a bag of the little plastic bricks and start sorting through them, just the mere sound brings me back, to remember and to feel the essence of my son, however far away he might be.
1.How did the author feel when building Lego with her children?
A.Energetic. B.Content. C.Bored. D.Anxious.
2.What can we infer about Aaron?
A.He usually keeps others at a distance. B.He is slow in adapting to life changes.
C.His hobby changed as he grew up. D.He immersed himself in a virtual community.
3.What did the author realize after visiting the Lego store with Aaron?
A.A stable base is important. B.A designer has a calm soul.
C.Lego is her son’s “stable base”. D.It is meaningful to build Lego.
4.What does Lego mean to the author now?
A.A bridge to connect with her son. B.A reminder of her happy childhood.
C.A game to escape from life boredom. D.A passion for an endless imaginative world.

Ann Noble has lived in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester for 11 years. Her third-floor house lacks the space to garden. Looking for a way to get her hands dirty, she signed up for a Boston Food Forest Coalition (BFFC) cleanup day near her home. “For me, it’s served two purposes, which is giving back to my community,” says Ms Noble, “but also meeting some new people who share my values in terms of having a green footprint.”
Urban food forests serve a unique role. They aren’t large — the footprint is roughly the size of a housing lot — but they can host over 100 species of plants on an acre. The sites require maintenance — although the goal is for them to become self-sustaining over time. Food forestry differs from community gardening because the space is open for anyone to come in, spend time, harvest, or plant.
BFFC aims to establish 30 food forests across Boston by 2030. “I think what makes a food forest is truly the community owning the space and growing and transforming with those spaces,” says Liz Luc Clowes, BFFC’s community engagement and food forest construction director. The goal for the spaces, she adds, is to support the land’s healing, follow permaculture (永续农业) principles, and be “welcoming and really a third space for people to gather”.
On a recent Wednesday, 15 volunteers, most of whom were new to BFFC, got to work removing mugwort (艾草) from around a pear tree. Once the weeds were pulled, volunteers used a natural weeding process that would suppress (抑制) the plant’s return by laying the picked mugwort back down in thick mats and placing big sheets of cardboard on top. The cardboard acts as a new soil layer. It’s called repurposing, and it is how many BFFC sites transform from abandoned plots.
1.What motivated Ms Noble to join BFFC directly?
A.Her green thumb talent. B.Her lack of gardening space.
C.Her sense of loneliness. D.Her awareness of sustainability.
2.What sets food forestry apart from community gardening?
A.It belongs to private sections. B.It continues with active maintenance.
C.It has more traditional gardening practices. D.It provides free access to the public.
3.What is implied in Liz’s words about BFFC?
A.Its main project. B.Its management rules.
C.Its basic ideas. D.Its consequence evaluation.
4.What is the volunteers’ way of weeding like?
A.Sustainable. B.Laborious. C.Efficient. D.Destructive.

Last summer,17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved erhu - a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty. Little did she know that this trip would spark an extraordinary musical creation.
During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her instrument’s attractive sound. “It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings. Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day celebration.
As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate raindrops with quick bow movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to weave Western harmonies into the Chinese folk tune “Jasmine Flower.” The integration created a charming soundscape that neither had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece“Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous applause. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the violin’s vigorous melodies (旋律).
What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater. Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and I. yon through weekly“global jam sessions.” Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera with jazz. Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a language that turns differences into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict; they compose something entirely new.

When Madhvi Chittoor of Arvada, Colo., learned at the age of 6 that PFAS are found in all sorts of consumer products, she wanted to warn everyone. So she started with one person: Colorado state senator (参议员) Lisa Cutter, a strong advocate for the environment. Cutter agreed to meet, and in 2021 she sat down with Madhvi at a bakery — Panera.
They talked about how PFAS, a group of manufactured chemicals used in consumer products since the 1940s, have made their way into drinking water, soil, food products, and the air. Studies have found that exposure to certain levels of PFAS can lead to negative developmental effects in children, increased risk of some cancers and reduced immune function. Cutter already knew a little about PFAS but not enough to push her toward drafting a bill about them. Madhvi, she says, “really planted the seed.”
The following year, Cutter went on to sponsor a PFAS bill that bans “intentionally added” PFAS in a wide range of consumer goods. In order to have the bill passed, Madhvi testified (作证) at the state Capitol and spent months emailing with Governor Jared Polis. After the bill passed, Polis recognized Madhvi’s hard work, inviting her to the bill signing in 2022.
It was not the first time that Cutter and Madhvi worked together. In 2021, after Cutter proposed a measure to ban single-use plastic bags in major retail stores and plastic-foam containers in restaurants, Madhvi advocated for that bill too — speaking with city leaders and businesses, and conducting a signature campaign. At the beginning of 2024, that measure finally took full effect.
And Madhvi, now 13, isn’t resting on her laurels. “There’s still more that needs to be banned, like PFAS in toilet paper and cleaning products,” she says. She has kept up her advocacy locally and abroad. And on a recent vacation in her hometown, she found time to organize a beach cleanup and speak at schools about pollution.
1.Why did Madhvi want to meet Cutter?
A.To explore ways to resolve the PFAS problem.
B.To prevent her from purchasing PFAS products.
C.To seek support for a bill against the use of PFAS.
D.To inform her of PFAS’ negative effects on children.
2.How did Madhvi contribute to the passing of the PFAS bill?
A.By drafting it together with Cutter.
B.By conducting a signature campaign.
C.By speaking with influential businesses.
D.By gaining support from the government.
3.What can be inferred about Madhvi from the last paragraph?
A.She is tired from her work. B.She feels proud of herself.
C.She wants to achieve more. D.She cares little about fame.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Madhvi’s Environmental Campaigns
B.Colorado’ s Bills on PFAS and Plastics
C.A Teen’s Journey to Global Recognition
D.A Young Voice against Environmental Damage

【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者与儿子Aaron之间关于乐高积木的故事,以及乐高如何成为Aaron生活中的重要组成部分,并最终成为他的职业道路。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“I remember when the boys were about 3, 7 and 8, feeling like it was an eternity until my husband would get home, and I was thinking: “Lego again? Didn’t we just do this yesterday?” Those hours seemed to go on forever.(我记得孩子们大概3岁、7岁和8岁的时候,感觉在丈夫回家之前的时间无比漫长,我当时就在想:“又玩乐高?我们昨天不是刚玩过吗?”那些时光似乎无穷无尽。)”可知,作者觉得在丈夫回家之前的时间很漫长,并且对于又要和孩子们玩乐高表示出厌烦,那些和孩子们玩乐高的时光似乎无穷无尽。故选C。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“We moved from Ohio to the Bay Area. He’d always been change averse. He was unhappy, wailing for days like King Lear in the storm: “Why is everything different?”(我们从俄亥俄州搬到了旧金山湾区。他向来不喜欢改变。他很不开心,像暴风雨中的李尔王一样哀号了好几天:“为什么一切都不一样了?”)”可知,Aaron一直不喜欢改变,当从俄亥俄州搬到旧金山湾区时,他不开心,像暴风雨中的李尔王一样哀号了好几天,这说明他在适应生活变化方面比较慢。故选B。
3.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“I realize the concept of the “stable base” that my husband taught him all those years ago has become a metaphor for Aaron’s life: Lego is where he feels the most calm, happy and competent. He needs things to make sense in the way Lego makes sense.(我意识到,多年前我丈夫教他的“稳固基础”概念,已经成了亚伦人生的一个隐喻:乐高是让他感到最平静、快乐和自信的地方。他需要事物像乐高那样有章可循。)”可知,作者和Aaron去了乐高店后,意识到多年前丈夫教 Aaron 的“稳固基础”概念已经成为Aaron生活的一个隐喻,乐高是让他感到最平静、快乐和自信的地方,即乐高是Aaron的“稳固基础”。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The time has gone too fast. I have a new and profound connection to Aaron. When I dump out a bag of the little plastic bricks and start sorting through them, just the mere sound brings me back, to remember and to feel the essence of my son, however far away he might be. 故选A。

The cardboard acts as a new soil layer. It’s called repurposing, and it is how many BFFC sites transform from abandoned plots.(一旦杂草被拔掉,志愿者们就使用了一种天然的除草方法,把拔下来的艾草厚厚地铺成垫子,再在上面放上大块的硬纸板,以此抑制杂草的再次生长。硬纸板充当了新的土层。这被称为重新利用,也是许多 BFFC 场地从废弃地块转变过来的方式)”可知,志愿者的除草方式是不破坏生态平衡的,合理利用,可持续的。故选A。

1.Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris?
A.To share Chinese music culture. B.To give it to her friend as a present.
C.To display it at a local studio. D.To teach students full-time.
2.What contributed to the lasting cooperation of Li Mei and Pierre?
A.Their common and deep love for traditional Chinese music.
B.Their successful performance and inspiration from each other’s music.
C.The opportunity to participate in the Bastille Day celebration together.
D.The desire to teach music in a virtual way to students around the world.
3.Why was “Silk Road Echoes” well received by the audience?
A.It reflected the beauty of nature wonderfully.
B.It featured traditional Chinese folk performance.
C.It was a musical handshake between civilizations.
D.It was an excellent musical instrument exhibition.
4.What does the story mainly convey?
A.Music is the source of lasting friendship.
B.Mastering an instrument requires practice.
C.Traditional music resists modern influences.
D.Cooperation across cultures generates innovation.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D

Four-year-old Camila loves to dress up and rarely leaves the house without lipstick. Camila’s mother Annette Vea Lopez didn’t always know how to respond to Camila’s self-expression, but since participating in the Casa de los Ninos Parents as Teachers program, she now accepts her daughter’s fashion choices happily.
“Camila’s been very independent since she was very young,” Vea Lopez said. “Adults would always comment on her makeup and how she dressed. She was always very girly. She’s 4 now and still that way. That’s just her personality. We love her just as she is. And we love that Parents as Teachers always encouraged us to let Camila be herself.”
Vea Lopez heard about the Parents as Teachers home visitation program from a friend who suggested that she take part with then 1-year-old Camila. The FTFPSRP Council funds this program to help parents become their child’s first and best teachers. Parents as Teachers gives families personalized, in-home support through a trained parent educator.
During home visits, the parent educator introduced the family to activities that support social-emotional development, such as being able to recognize and label emotions. Vea Lopez notices the impact these activities have had on her daughter. “I see that Camila’s confidence and self-esteem have grown. She began to open up to me more and talk about when she was feeling anxious or what she needed support with.” said Vea Lopez.
Camil a recently graduated from the program and is ready for kindergarten. Vea Lopez feels indebted to Parents as Teachers for helping get her there.
1.How did Annette feel about Camila’s self-expression at first?
A.Helpless. B.Favorable. C.Unclear. D.Indifferent.
2.What can we know from Vea Lopez’s words in paragraph 2?
A.Camila has changed her personality as she grows older.
B.Parents as Teachers supports Camila to be true to herself.
C.Camila’s independence started when she was 4 years old.
D.Adults’ comments on Camila had a negative impact on her.
3.What is the purpose of the Parents as Teachers project?
A.To raise more money for needy families.
B.To ensure great harmony in every family.
C.To train children to be more personalized.
D.To help parents bring up their children well.
4.What do the underlined words “feels indebted to” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Sponsors. B.Boosts. C.Credits. D.Assesses.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C

4.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Camila recently graduated from the program and is ready for kindergarten.(Camila最近从这个项目中毕业了,现在已经准备好上幼儿园了)”及下文“for helping get her there”可知,Camila顺利毕业,Vea Lopez认为是 “家长即教师” 项目帮助Camila成长,所以她应该是感激这个项目。由此可知,feels indebted to表示“感到感激或欠某人的情”,C选项“Credits”有“归功于;感激”的意思,最贴近“feels indebted to”的含义。故选C。

【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.D
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了13岁女孩Madhvi Chittoor推动PFAS禁令,与参议员合作促成环保法案通过,并持续倡导环保的故事。
1.推理判断题。文章在第一段“When Madhvi Chittoor of Arvada, Colo., learned at the age of 6 that PFAS are found in all sorts of consumer products, she wanted to warn everyone.(当科罗拉多州阿瓦达的Madhvi Chittoor在6岁时得知各种消费品中都含有PFAS时,她想警告所有人)”以及第二段“They talked about how PFAS, a group of manufactured chemicals used in consumer products since the 1940s, have made their way into drinking water, soil, food products, and the air.(他们谈到了PFAS是如何进入饮用水、土壤、食品和空气的。PFAS是一组自20世纪40年代以来用于消费品的化学制品)”和“Cutter already knew a little about PFAS but not enough to push her toward drafting a bill about them.(卡特已经对PFAS有了一些了解,但还不足以促使她起草一项有关PFAS的法案)”可推知,Madhvi想与参议员Cuter会面的目的是要探索解决PFAS向题的解决办法。故选A。
2.细节理解题。从文章第三段“In order to have the bill passed, Madhvi testified (作证) at the state Capitol and spent months emailing with Governor Jared Polis.(为了让法案获得通过,马德维在州议会作证,并花了几个月的时间与州长贾里德·波利斯(Jared Polis)发电子邮件)”可知,Madhvi在推动PFAS禁令通过中做出的贡献是获得了政府部门的支持。故选D。
3.推理判断题。从最后一段“And Madhvi, now 13, isn’t resting on her laurels. “There’s still more that needs to be banned, like PFAS in toilet paper and cleaning products,” she says.(现年13岁的Madhvi并没有满足于她的荣誉。“还有更多的东西需要被禁止,比如卫生纸和清洁产品中的PFAS,”她说)”可推知,Madhvi想为继续推动环保做出更多。故选C。
4.主旨大意题。通过第一段的“When Madhvi Chittoor of Arvada, Colo., learned at the age of 6 that PFAS are found in all sorts of consumer products, she wanted to warn everyone.(当科罗拉多州阿瓦达的Madhvi Chittoor在6岁时得知各种消费品中都含有PFAS时,她想警告所有人)”和整篇文章的脉络结构,Madhvi在6岁时就向参议员普及PFAS知识并通过努力促进PFAS相关法案的通过,13岁的时候Madhvi不满足现状继续她的环保倡导。由此可知,本文主要讲了一个反对环境破坏的年轻人的故事。故选D。
