(2025高二下·河北邢台·阶段练习)Kieng Riven’s eighth birthday was on the horizon so his mother asked him what he wanted. She expected the youngster to answer with a list of toys and games. His answer took his mother by surprise and brought her to tears.
A child’s birthday is usually spent doing fun activities, eating cakes, opening gifts surrounded by family and friends. Young Kieng had a different idea of how he wanted to spend his big day. Instead, he wanted to gift his community by handing out a dozen pizzas to homeless people living in a “tent city” in Charlotte, NC.
Antiqua, hoping to make good on her son’s birthday request, shopped around neighbourhood pizzas to see which of them could quickly fill a large order of 100 pizzas. She received only one reply to her request. To her shock, one charitable store manager of a local Papa John’s, named Gage Lock not only agreed to accept the order, he also provided a donation of 75 of the pizzas. Gage and his staff also delivered the pizza pies to the “tent city” in order to personally help give away them to the homeless population there.
“That made me want to do it so much more, knowing it was a 7-year-old kid, and all he wanted for his birthday was to give back to the community,” replied Gage describing his purpose to join in the unusual birthday pizza party. Another local pizza chipped in to help hand out the pizza safely while all wearing masks. (2025高二下·河北邢台·阶段练习)Every year, the release of new phones brings consumers to the market looking to upgrade their phones to the next best thing. However, the problem of electronic waste, or e-waste, isn’t so well-known despite the threat it poses to the environment. E-waste is the term used for electronics that have been thrown away. Although buying the latest device may initially be a good decision, in the long run, the constant purchase of electronics will affect the health of our planet.
E-waste is common in the U. S., as landfills(垃圾填埋场) are filled with old electronics. According to an EPA report, materials in these landfills account for 70 percent of dangerous materials. In the commercial district Agbogbloshie, Ghana, most electronic waste is burned or thrown in acid, seriously damaging the environment with poisonous emissions in the air.
At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of buying a new one. Additionally, before throwing away your old device, donate it to schools, charities or non-profit organizations that can find a use for the product.
Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use when they educate students about the topic.
As the effects of climate change grow more and more serious, it’s our responsibility to help the planet and prevent issues such as e-waste. As the 5G revolution begins, it’s important to remember to recycle old smart phones and understand that a difference can be made at the individual level.
28. What is the author’s main concern in the text?
A. New technology is hard to apply. B. The problem of e-waste is ignored.
C. People refuse to upgrade their phones. D. Few people care about the environment.
29. Why does the author mention Ghana in Paragraph 2?
A. To warn of harmful emissions. B. To explain the waste of resources.
C. To show the seriousness of e-waste. D. To show the wide use of landfills.
30. What does the underlined word “overhauled” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Restored. B. Replaced. C. Cleaned. D. Suspended
31. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The prospects of future e-waste. B. The responsibility of communities.
C. Online resources on reducing e-waste D. The education of students about e-waste.

SpaceX Starship test launch in October 2024 marked another milestone for the world’s largest and most powerful rocket. But additional data collected indicates Starship may be even more damaging to local communities and wildlife than critics previously feared.
According to datasets published, the 30-story-tall Starship’s 33 engines generate anywhere between 105 and 125 decibels(分贝) during its liftoff and landing, which is powerful enough to cause structural damage to buildings. Gee, a professor in Brigham Young University, detected those sound levels roughly six miles away. “This is the largest rocket ever built. It would stand to reason that it would also produce the highest level of noise among all rockets ever constructed.” Gee said.
Gee stresses that although researchers often measure noise using decibel levels, there are other measurements for sound. So he believes it’s best to assess Starship’s loudness by comparing it to other understandable quantities. On the quieter end, Starship’s liftoff may sound similar to an average rock concert. At its loudest that noise is equal to hearing a close range gunshot.
According to environmental engineer Roesch, the “raw power output” from Starship’s Super Heavy rockets has increased 30 percent since the FAA’s initial risk review in 2019, an amount expected to grow over future launches. Roesch calls past assumptions by the FAA “not only factually laughable based on an understanding of basic physics” but contradictory to NASA’s decades of Acoustic Modeling document. “No bird egg will survive that kind of impact. More deaths for animals are not accounted for in the FAA’s risk assessment.”
Gee declines to offer a personal opinion regarding SpaceX’s ongoing Starship launch schedule, and believes humanity’s future may require space travel. In the meantime, he hopes the new data will inform policy and regulatory decisions. “We are talking about levels that people found unacceptable before,” he says.
32. How did Gee conclude SpaceX’s rocket would be the loudest ever built?
A. He measured the decibel levels directly. B. He calculated the rocket’s engine power.
C. He inferred from the rocket’s dimensions. D. He checked all the datasets published.
33. Why does Gee mention gunshot?
A. To indicate possible damage. B. To make readers amused.
C. To measure sounds accurately. D. To describe noise levels vividly.
34. What did Roesch think of FAA’s assumptions?
A. Factual but contradictory. B. Illogical and inaccurate.
C. Optimistic but simple. D. Irrelevant and outdated.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Animal injuries during SpaceX’s launches.
B. Fair prospects for SpaceX’ s Starship project.
C. Technical drawbacks of SpaceX’s rocket engines.
D. Environmental impact of SpaceX’s Starship launch.

Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting? Certainly, it is a new experience, which brings the opportunity of discovering fascinating things and a feeling of freedom. 36 You will experience culture shock. Evidently, at least four essential stages of culture-shock adjustment occur.
The first stage is called "the honeymoon". In this stage, you feel excitement about living in a different place, and everything seems to be marvelous. 37
Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears. This is the "hostility stage". 38 You become tired of many things about the new culture. Moreover, people don't treat you like a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful at first is now awful, and everything makes you feel distressed and tired.
Then you come to the third stage called "recovery". You start feeling more positive, and you try to develop comprehension of everything you don't understand. The whole situation starts to become more favorable. 39
The last stage of culture shock is called "adjustment". 40 The things that initially made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable; you have adjusted to the new culture.
A. Actually, culture shock is something you cannot avoid when studying in a foreign country.
B. You have reached a point where you feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture.
C. You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you.
D. You recover from the symptoms of the first two stages.
E. In spite of these advantages, however, there are also some challenges you will encounter.
F. However, when you have completely adjusted to a new culture you can more fully enjoy it.
G. You begin to notice that not everything is as good as you had originally thought it was.

On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. At that time, his father and I didn’t have a high income. The expense for this trip was quite significant, yet we firmly believed that it was worth it to celebrate Leo’s birthday in this way. After doing Disneyland to death(玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Leo?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates(海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Leo Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Leo out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Leo realize that good things really were happening to him.

My stay at this hut in the Alps was a truly unforgettable experience in my life. I met some very interesting people there, and even made a few good friends from Spain and Russia. There was an Italian woman, Janice, whose room was next to mine. She didn’t know how to ski, but still went down the slopes. And she got lost in the forest. A few of us went looking for her. We nearly got tired when we finally found her. She sat under a tree, and fell asleep. The very interesting thing was that she didn’t seem scared at all. She told us that she saw a bear not far from the tree. We thought she was seeing things, but on our way back we saw the bear, too. It looked at us from a distance, but made no attempt to come closer. I have to admit I was a bit scared, but Janice seemed perfectly fine. She even waved at the bear. Later, it turned out that she had seen bears before. Her father worked in a circus, and was in charge of training wild animals, like elephants, lions and bears.

Kieng’s friends and family also joined in to help pass out the slices with a side of kindness, making it one very memorable birthday.
“It is infectious; it makes you want to be kinder,” said one of the happy receivers of the present of goodwill.

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. D
【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了电子垃圾问题及其应对措施。
28. 细节理解题。由文章第一段中“However, the problem of electronic waste, or e-waste, isn’t so well-known despite the threat it poses to the environment.(然而,电子垃圾(即被丢弃的电子产品)问题尽管对环境构成威胁,却鲜为人知。)”可知,作者主要担心的是电子垃圾问题被忽视。故选B。
29. 推理判断题。由文章第二段“E-waste is common in the U. S., as landfills (垃圾填埋场) are filled with old electronics. According to an EPA report, materials in these landfills account for 70 percent of dangerous materials. In the commercial district Agbogbloshie, Ghana, most electronic waste is burned or thrown in acid, seriously damaging the environment with poisonous emissions in the air.(在美国,电子垃圾现象十分普遍,垃圾填埋场里堆满了废旧电子产品。
由文章第三段中“At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of buying a new one.(在个人层面,有一些解决方案有助于减少电子垃圾的数量。下次当你的智能手机出现故障,或者你觉得手机太旧了,考虑检查一下它是否可以overhauled,而不是购买新手机。)”可知,个人层面减少电子垃圾的数量,考虑检查一下它是否可以修理,而不是买新的,所以overhauled意思是“修复”。与Restored“修复”意思相符。故选A。
31. 主旨大意题。由文章第四段“Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use when they educate students about the topic.(在学校向学生传授有关电子垃圾的知识,是社区引起人们对这一问题更多关注的一种方式。电子垃圾与许多不同的职业相关,未来一代可以尽早了解电子垃圾的危害,以及各行各业应如何看待电子垃圾问题。网上还有许多资源,包括教案,供教师在向学生传授这一主题知识时使用。)”可知,本段主要讲的是在学校教学生关于电子垃圾的知识是社区引起人们更多关注这个问题的一种方式,即本段主要关注的是对学生的电子垃圾教育。故选D。

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. D
【语篇解读】这是一篇议论文。文章围绕2024年10月SpaceX 星际飞船测试发射展开,指出其对当地社区和野生动物破坏超预期,阐述噪音影响及相关人士观点。
32. 推理判断题。根据第二段第二句“This is the largest rocket ever built. It would stand to reason that it would also produce the highest level of noise among all rockets ever constructed.(这是有史以来建造的最大的火箭。有理由认为,它也会产生有史以来所有建造的火箭中最高水平的噪音。)”可知,Gee是从火箭的尺寸(the largest rocket)推断出SpaceX 的火箭会是有史以来噪音最大的。故选C项。
33. 推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句“At its loudest that noise is equal to hearing a close range gunshot.(在最响的时候,那种噪音等同于听到近距离的枪声。)”可知,Gee提到枪声是为了生动形象地描述噪音水平。故选D项。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(2025高二下·河北张家口·阶段练习)Leo, my middle child, was blessed with remarkable intelligence and striking good looks. However, he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, he would list everything bad that happened that day!

As time went by, the change in Leo became more obvious. ________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Over the next few weeks, I stuck to my new approach. Every day when Leo came home, I listened attentively as he started listing the bad things. I didn’t interrupt, no matter how much I wanted to. After he finished, I gently asked, “But Leo, what good things happened today?” At first, he had to think hard, but gradually, he began to recall some small positive things. Maybe it was a kind word from a classmate or a beautiful cloud he saw on the way home.
As time went by, the change in Leo became more obvious. His daily reports started to include more good things than bad. He no longer focused solely on the negative aspects of life. One day, when we were planning a picnic and it started to rain, instead of complaining, he said, “Well, we can have an indoor picnic then. It could be fun too!” I was so proud to see this transformation in my son. His new positive attitude was like a ray of sunshine, brightening up our lives.
