Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need. Frank, Aged 21 I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck! Eddie, Aged 20 When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home-schooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone, I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier after you know it. David, Aged 19 I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry. 21. What can we infer from Sharon about high school? A. Teachers are quite strict. B. Students often stay up at night. C. Teachers provide little care for students. D. Students should make good use of their time. 22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school? A. Excited B. Bored. C. Worried. D. Relaxed. 23. Who mentions the importance of friends? A. Frank. B. David. C. Sharon. D. Eddie. B Imagine telling Einstein to stop studying physics. Imagine telling Picasso to stop painting. Could they stop doing the things they loved? This is what people tried to do to Sophie Germain. Sophie’s love was mathematics. She fell in love with it when she was only 13 years old and decided to become a mathematician. However, it was very unusual for a girl from a middle-class family to study math in the early eighteenth century in France. Sophie’s parents wanted her to be like other girls. When she studied math, they tried to stop her. Sophie didn’t want to stop. She studied secretly at night, by candlelight, when her parents slept. Sophie’s parents found out, and they took away her candles. That didn’t stop Sophie. She found more candles. Finally, her parents decided to let Sophie study. When Sophie was 18 years old, a school for mathematician (数学家) opened in Paris. Sophie couldn’t take classes there because it was for men only. However, she didn’t let this discrimination against women stop her. She started writing letters to math professors at the school. She asked them questions, and she wrote about her ideas. However, she didn’t sign her own name on the letters. She used a man’s name, Monsieur LeBlanc. This idea worked, and the professors responded to her letters. After a while, one professor asked to meet the brilliant Monsieur LeBlanc. Imagine his surprise! Monsieur LeBlanc was a woman. The professor didn’t tell anyone. He kept Sophie’s secret. Sophie is famous for her excellent work on a difficult math problem that was a challenge for many other mathematicians. She is also famous for her studies of metal as a building material. Years later, engineers used her ideas to build skyscrapers (摩天大楼), such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sophie’s hometown. Today, on the base of the Eiffel Tower, there are 72 names of brilliant French scientists and mathematicians. These people all made great contributions to the world. However, there’s one important name that’s missing: Sophie Germain. 24. What was Sophie’s parents’ first reaction to her love for math? A. They disagreed on it. B. They gave it their full support. C. They considered it as childish. D. They pretended not to know about it. 25. How did Sophie manage to keep in touch with some mathematicians? A. She signed a male name. B. She was dressed as a man. C. She told them of her love for math. D. She sent them her published essays. 26. Which of the following can best describe Sophie? A. Honest and responsible. B. Ambitious and sensitive. C. Determined and talented. D. Patient and single-minded. 27. What does the author suggest about Sophie in the last paragraph? A. Her ideas influenced 72 scientists. B. Her efforts were widely recognized. C. Her contribution deserved a mention. D. Her name was written on the Eiffel Tower. C Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had worked hard on, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?” Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts (花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads – the commander, and tails – the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver. Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, desperate to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution (革命).” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington? Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I thought it was unfair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Finally, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance appeared as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my choice to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet! 28. What did the author’s classmates think about his report? A. Informal. B. Funny. C. Creative. D. Confusing. 29. Why was the author uncertain about the task? A. He was a newcomer in the school. B. His grandfather’s advice didn’t work. C. He was unfamiliar with American history. D. He forgot what the teacher asked him to do. 30. What does the underlined word “desperate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Angry. B. Eager. C. Confident. D. Uninterested. 31. How did the author turn things around in the end? A. By redoing the task. B. With the help of the teacher. C. By working hard for several months. D. By telling the headmaster the whole thing. D With rapid advances in medical science, cloning is slowly but surely looking like it could be in our near future. However, is it really an option that should be considered as a way to extend human life? Reproductive cloning may help human families gain children, but there’s also a benefit for the animal world. It brings hope to people eager for children but unable to have their own or adopt. It can also bring about the recreation of species that have long since died, allowing scientists to fully study the species as a living creature instead of simply looking at images or bones. Many believe that cloning can be used to replace failing organs. This will reduce the waiting list for organ donations and allow more people to be saved. Not only that, but because the organ is, in fact, your own organ, there would be less chance of rejection. Cloning could prove helpful in genetic research. Using cloning technologies, genetic researchers would have a better understanding of the composition of genes and the effects of genetic constituents (成分) on human characters. There’s also the possibility of changing genetic constituents in cloned humans, and cloning could help fight genetic diseases. While the cloning of body organs can help extend human life, it could also cause a lot of malpractice Along with the ability to clone desired characters, there could be the possibility of people deliberately reproducing undesired characters. This could lead to a rise in malpractices within society. Cloning involves a process of creating identical genes. As such, there would be a lack of diversity in humankind. Scientists believe this lack of diversity will lower the human race's ability to adapt. Whatever your view on cloning may be, studies show that the clone would in fact not be completely identical to the original just as twins are not completely identical. Though they might look alike, twins have different personalities and enjoy different things. The same could be said of clones. Even if technology were created in which your memories and thoughts could be transmitted (传送) to the clone, your clone would still be a different person. 32. What good might reproductive cloning bring? A. It may help improve human well-being. B. It could contribute to the rising birthrate. C. It could help animals survive deadly diseases. D. It may enable scientists to better study extinct species. 33. According to the text, cloning can also be used for       . A. organ transplant B. solving the aging problem C. infectious disease treatment D. constructing a gene database 34. What’s one problem cloning may cause? A. Great diversity. B. Individual security risk. C. Increased improper conduct. D. Serious personality disorder. 35. Why are twins mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To stress twins’ similarities. B. To show twins are quite common. C. To carry out deeper research on twins. D. To better illustrate what a clone will be like. The zero-effort holiday workout (锻炼) Build fun activities into your time away and you may even burn off the extra calories (卡路里) you eat. Well, I grew up in Germany, but my father is Austrian and my mother is from Poland. I’ve traveled a bit around Austria but I’ve never been to Poland. I’ve heard it’s really beautiful and hopefully I’ll be able to visit it sometime in the future. I’ve started a six year course in architecture and I finished my third year exams a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I can’t afford not to work so I have a part time job as well. I work as a waiter in a cafe and to be honest it’s bearable and most importantly, it covers my expenses. When I have classes, I only work weekends, but during the holidays I can spend more hours working if I want to make some extra cash, I can’t say it’s easy as I need to be really organized. I won’t do this forever, but for now it works. That’s all for me. Thanks for listening. A Sharon, Aged 22 The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. A. Frank. 24. A 25. A 26. C 27. B 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第一段“Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher.(我自豪地读着我的话,环顾了一下教室,只见我的同学们在笑,眼里含着泪水。我疑惑地瞥了一眼面无表情的老师。)”以及下文陈述作者把发明花生数百种用途的华盛顿当成了美国总统华盛顿推知,作者的同学认为作者的文章是荒唐可笑的。故选B。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant.(因为我的历史观念来自于我祖国的一位高龄老师,所以我从来没有听说过这个名字。当我搜索这个人的名字时,很明显,有两个人有着相同的名字,但看起来完全不同!一个发明了花生的数百种用途,而另一个则带领某种军队横跨美国。我盯着屏幕,不知道老师指的是哪一个。)”可知,作者对这个任务感到困惑是因为作者对美国的历史是不了解的。故选C。 【30题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段的“I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk(我放下文章,坐在书桌前)”,“find out what I had done wrong(找出我做错了什么)”和“As a classmate began his report, it all became clear(当一位同学开始他的报告时,一切都变得清晰起来)”可知,作者完全蒙了,急切想知道自己犯了什么错误。 根据最后一段的“I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. As a result, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation.(我觉得惩罚是不合理的,我相信我应该得到第二次机会。因此,在这一学年剩下的时间里,我全身心地投入到我的学习中。十个月后,当我发现自己和祖父坐在校长办公室里,正在进行完全不同的谈话时,这个机会就出现了)”可知,最后作者通过努力工作几个月扭转了局面,故选C。 D With rapid advances in medical science, cloning is slowly but surely looking like it could be in our near future. While the cloning of body organs can help extend human life it could also cause a lot of malpractice Along with the ability to clone desired characters, there could be the possibility of people deliberately reproducing undesired characters. D 33. B 34. C 35. 根据第一段“It can also bring about the recreation of species that have long since died, allowing scientists to fully study the species as a living creature instead of simply looking at images or bones.(它还可以使早已死去的物种重新出现,使科学家能够将这些物种作为生物进行全面研究,而不是仅仅看图像或骨骼。)可知生殖克隆能使科学家更好地研究灭绝物种。故选D项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第五段“While the cloning of body organs can help extend human life,it could also cause a lot of malpractice.(虽然人体器官的克隆可以帮助延长人类的寿命,但它也可能导致许多弊端。)可知克隆技术可以解决老龄化问题。故选B项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Along with the ability to clone desired characters, there could be the possibility of people deliberately reproducing undesired characters. This could lead to a rise in malpractices within society.(除了克隆理想角色的能力,人们还可能有意复制不希望看到的角色。这可能会导致社会上不法行为的增加。)可知克隆可能会增加不当的行为。故选C项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Whatever your view on cloning may be,studies show that the clone would in fact not be completely identical to the original just as twins are not completely identical.(无论你对克隆的看法如何,研究表明,克隆实际上并不完全相同,就像双胞胎不完全相同一样。) 以及“The same could be said of clones. Even if technology were created in which your memories and thoughts could be transmitted (传送) to the clone, your clone would still be a different person.(克隆也是如此。即使技术被创造出来,你的记忆和思想可以被传送到克隆体,你的克隆体仍然是一个不同的人。)”可知提到双胞胎是为了更好地说明克隆是什么样子的。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The zero-effort holiday workout (锻炼) Build fun activities into your time away and you may even burn off the extra calories (卡路里) you eat. Well, I grew up in germany, but my father is austrian and my mother is from poland. I've traveled a bit around arria, but i've never been to poland. I've heard it's really beautiful. And hopefully i'll be able to visit IT sometime in the future. I've started a six year course in architecture, and i've finished my third year exams a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I can't afford not to work, so I have a part time job as well. I work as a waiter in a cafe, and to be honest, it's bearable. And most importantly, IT covers my expenses. When I have classes, I only work weekends, but during the holidays, I can spend more hours working if I want to make some extra cash. I can't say it's easy as I need to be really organized. I won't do this forever, but for now, IT works. That's all for me. Thanks for listening. Hello everyone. Today is my turn to give a talk.
