She did it her way. I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception. My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. The place was simple, with no indoor heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me. In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called “Ivory Tower”. As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit the farm every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced. Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me. My heart skipped a beat. “Moon River” was playing on the radio. I sat there with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note. 1.From the first paragraph, we know that the writer's mother ________. A.left the small farm with Lord B.passed away four years ago C.left for Lord to live her own way D.preferred to be with Lord 答案:B 解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Four years ago my sweet mom went to be with her Lord (God).” B。 2.The underlined word “reminisced” in the fifth paragraph probably means “________”. A.shouted B.comforted C.recalled D.sighed 答案:C 解析:词义猜测题。根据第五段中的“While my mom ... at home.” C。 3.The writer didn't like staying in the farm for the following reasons except that ________. A.she could only sing one song in the small farm B.it was too cold and quiet C.there was nothing more that could make her excited D.the place was simple, with no indoor heat 答案:A 解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的“In the evenings ... Mom harmonized (用和声唱).” A。 4.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage? A.Cherish (珍惜) life B.My happy childhood C.Our small farmhouse D.Mom's music 答案:D 解析:标题判断题。 B (2024·河南省郑州市高一上第二次考试)It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate? Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration. Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn't matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration. However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in musiclistening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there's actually a change in mood when the music is taken away. It's hard to convince my students that music doesn't help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don't have writer's block. It's easy for me to put my words on paper.” “Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you're listening to and doing well in math.” 5.What does the underlined word “distracting” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Making it difficult for someone to concentrate. B.Causing great excitement. C.Making someone want to do something. D.Making someone feel frightened. 根据画线词所在句“Music with a higher ... performance and concentration.” A。 6.What can we learn from the small study? A.Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music. B.Music can't improve people's mood and creativity. C.Different types of music lead to different performances. D.The volume of music affects concentration. 根据第三段中的“The study found ... didn't matter.” D。 7.What do Taj and Danela have in common? A.They believe music doesn't help concentrate. B.They use music to help with their paperwriting. C.They can't focus on reading while listening to music. D.They don't listen to music while doing math problems. 根据倒数第二段中Taj (塔杰)说的话“I wouldn't be ... trying to read.” C。 8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Should Students Listen to Music? B.Does Music Help Concentration? C.Is Music Related to Reading? D.Can Music Change Mood? Ⅵ 语法填空 (2024·广东省深圳大学附属实验中学高一上期中)Pets aren't just hairy toys for your children.
